Backyard Bliss

in All Posts

It’s funny – you would think we spent the entire summer in our backyard, but we actually avoided the deck and grass at all costs through the months of June, July, August, and most of September.  It was TOO HOT.  But now that it’s cooling off, we’re actually getting back outside as a family.  Hoorah!

Speaking of being outside…

IMG_5129

I made Candy Cane Lane iced tea this weekend, and it was THE BOMB.

Anyway… We did a major backyard renovation when we moved into our home three and a half years ago.  But here are the best part of our backyard!

The Hammock

The Husband gave me this hammock for my birthday (I think for #30?  Not sure – the years have started to blend together!).  I love laying in it and looking up at the trees.  It’s also a pretty good kiddo toy.  Hah.

The Large Deck

Our original deck was super small.  The design was so poor – for a decent-sized backyard, a little rectangle where you could hardly fit a few chairs just didn’t make sense.

IMG_7073_thumb

The first time my mom saw the house, she said, “You should expand this deck out so it touches the top of the hill.”  Kristien and I were like… “You’re a GENIUS!” So that’s exactly what we did.  I love how much room there is now for eating, lounging and playing.

Our Sun Sails are pretty cool, too – they were only $20 each at Costco and create so much shade.

The Sand Box

In the back corner of the yard is our sandbox, which I got on Craiglist for $30 for Henry’s 1st birthday.  It is BY FAR his most loved and used toy.  I love the sandbox because he’ll head outside to the backyard and entertain himself forever – I love that it’s open-ended play.

The Geodome Climber

SO EXCITED about this addition!  I originally saw this product featured on a post by Janet Lansbury about Outdoor Play Spaces and knew I immediately had to buy it. I have been LUSTING for a swing set (things that parents say…) but decided that a geodome climber was much more cost and space efficient.

IMG_5121

We get an incredible amount of use out of this thing (BFF Nicole and I even climbed on it the other night!) and it’s so fun to watch Henry learn to navigate it.  I can tell that it will be used for many years by both kids.  And get this… it was only $200 or so!  Also, I put this thing together BY MYSELF (Hubby was at work and I was itching to get it up) with both kids awake… Miracle upon miracles.

Things I Want to Add to the Backyard…

A Mud Kitchen

Rock climber grips along the side of the fence so Henry can climb along the side

A tire swing

A kiddie-sized picnic table

What do you love most about your backyard from a grown-up or kiddo perspective?

The Freakin Weekend

in All Posts

All of the sudden, fall swept its way into Charlotte.  I’m sure we will have a few more 95+ degree days, but this weekend – oh, the weather was blissful.  It was so wonderful to be outside.

FullSizeRender (43)

I got outside for a 3 miles stroller run.  I haven’t pushed a stroller on a jog in forever, and I definitely forgot how hard it is.   3 miles felt like 10!

IMG_1283

Claire had a blast (Henry was eating lunch with the Husband).  She laughed and laughed whenever I started to run after each walking break – it was sooooo cute that I turned off my music just to listen.  If that’s not motivation to stop walking and start running, I don’t know what is!

IMG_1281

Oh, those baby blues.  And those little teeth!  I see #3 popping through the top…

Food highlights of the weekend included:

IMG_3292

Chocolate Oil Chocolate (obviously, the whole family is totally addicted and we make a new batch every night or two)… The variations are so endless.  I made this match with Pumpkin Pie Spice <—DIY Recipe (about 1.5 teaspoons), a dark cocoa, and no chia seeds and it BLEW MY MIND.  Oh man.  I want some more just typing about it.

Also – Celtic Sea Salt on top before freezing!

IMG_3293

I also munched on this delicious tasting plate.  This is my new favorite combo for a snack…

IMG_5109

And a wonderful Sunday breakfast of a onion-y frittata with potatoes and strawberries.  Yum.

I have been rockin’ at eating plants lately – go me!

I leave you with a cute animal picture of the two furry boys.  <3

And a HAPPY MONDAY.  May your week be joyful and productive!

That Sugar Film

in All Posts

IMG_5090

Last night, we watched a really great documentary called That Sugar Film.  Have you seen it?

I’ve been following them on Instagram for a while and finally pulled the trigger on renting the movie – I was glad I did.  Pretty eye-opening.

cheerio image

Check out this circa 1986 photo of me and my grandpa.  I am wearing what was my FAVORITE shirt… My yellow Cheerios shirt!  I know this sounds crazy, but I actually remember that shirt.  It was so soft. And I wore it non-stop.  Cheerios was my favorite food – my mom loves to tell the story of how she would scatter a bunch of Cheerios on my little kid table and I’d do laps around it, hanging onto the edge and taking bites as I go.

IMG_2595

If you’ve been reading for a while, you may already know that I’ve done a lot of work with General Mills.  I think General Mills is an awesome company made of wonderful employees who are trying to do right by the world.  For example, the company has awesome maternity/paternity policies (you can read more about that here), is extremely supportive of LGBTQ rights, and has made big strides in making their cereals better for you (lower sugar content, no HFCS, and phasing out artificial flavors and colors).  General Mills has removed GMOs from Original Cheerios (hopefully, the other cereals will follow suit, but I know there are supply chain issues associated with this major shift).  I think these policies and changes are so important because so many children (and adults!) in our country regularly eat General Mills cereal for breakfast.

But, most importantly of all, I love General Mills because they offer AFFORDABLE, MAINSTREM options for gluten-free cereal.  I have long adored Chex for this – I can go to my normal grocery story and pick up a gluten-free box of something delicious without having to travel to a specialty store.  So that’s why I was so excited to see that my old favorite is going gluten-free, too!

IMG_4861

Seriously, I actually jumped up and yelped with joy.  Starting in September, gluten-free Yellow Box Cheerios, Honey Nut, Apple Cinnamon, Frosted, and Multigrain will be on shelves!  The price and availability should stay the same.  Cheerios will taste the same, too, because all General Mills did was change the manufacturing process to remove stray wheat, rye, and barley grains from the oats (Multigrain Cheerios has been changed to remove wheat and barley and use sorghum and millet).

Here’s the way that the kiddos and I eat our Cheerios…

IMG_4865

Henry:  Yellow box with milk

Claire: Yellow box on the highchair tray

Me:  Honey Nut and Yellow Box, mixed together, with plain Greek yogurt.  YUM.

IMG_4867

Cheerios was Claire’s first experience with a grain!  She gives it two baby thumbs up.  She is winding down on her blueberry obsession (truly, she ate it at every meal for a loooong time), and now looks around expectantly for Cheerios, grapes, and asparagus.  Random mix, but I guess it works!

IMG_4854

To celebrate the launch of gluten-free Cheerios, I’m giving away a prize pack of several boxes of this classic favorite.  And if you have a kiddo, I’ll throw in a yellow Cheerios shirt, too!  Simply leave a comment telling me your favorite cereal as a kid and as an adult.  Good luck!  <3

HIIT Stairclimber

in All Posts

Rocked out an awesome stairclimber workout yesterday!

FullSizeRender

I had to get dressed and put on “real person” clothes (AKA not yoga pants) for a meeting yesterday, so I did my old favorite stay-at-home trick… Headed to the gym so I could shower and blow dry my hair in peace.  Look, I’ve got two mobile kiddos under 3 years old – I risk Claire eating dog kibble (yeah, that happened) and Henry practicing “tiger jumps” off the dining room table (yeah, that happened, too) if I disappear into the bathroom for 3 minutes to scrub my hair.  So childcare at the gym is always the answer! And there’s the added benefit that I feel obligated to get my sweat on since I’m already there…

I Instagrammed that I did a High Intensity Interval (HIIT) workout on the stairclimber, and I had a request for the specific workout.  Here’s what I did – you’re practically “running” up the stairs at Level 14!

HIIT stairclimber

I loved this workout because I was DRIPPING by the end.

Fun Q&A

What are you reading right now?

I am reading Go Set a Watchman and No Bad Kids right now.

What was the last thing you watched on TV?

We watched Insurgent (the Divergent series) the other night! I think it got bad reviews, but I thought it was decent.  Very different from the book, though…

What do you have to have with you when traveling?

A good book and a ziploc bag of Earl Grey tea so I can make tea in my hotel room.

Are there any beauty products you really, really love?

I’m a minimalist when it comes to this stuff, but I really like Urban Decay’s Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage concealer.

What’s on your desk right now?

A potted plant, six pens, a bunch of papers, my Erin Condren planner (LOVE!), two phones, keys, and a La Croix.

How are you liking your Capsule Wardrobe?

AHH – guys, it’s so great.  This is the ULTIMATE way to simplify your closet and organize your clothes. I LOVE it so far.

IMG_5033_thumb

What are your life lessons/mantras?

I have two core beliefs – #1:  Love should be the beginning of, and the reason for, everything (that quote was in our wedding program, actually!) and #2:  Successful people are the ones who keep trying when things get tough.  If you quit when it gets hard, you will never succeed.

Have you ever won anything?

The coolest thing I ever “won” was a $10,000 prize from Amway.  The giant check was presented to me by John Tesh (the radio show guy), and I won because my blog readers voted for Operation Beautiful in droves!  I turned around and donated the $10,000 to the local Girls on the Run scholarship fund.  It was totally awesome.   And I owe it all to you!

155752_467778813340_180198673340_5728975_283075_n

The other cool thing that I “won” was when I convinced readers that I won the lottery and was changing my blog name to Wealthy Tipping Point.  Hahahah.  That is still is my favorite April Fools joke ever.

Your turn! Answer a Q!
