Good morning, Pittsburgh!

IMG_6162

It’s so strange and wonderful to be back in Pittsburgh (my college town) with my best friends.  I have some great friends in Orlando, but nothing compares to being surrounded by the girls I’ve been through thick and thin with.  These ladies know me like no one else.  It’s great to be reunited for Sarah’s bachelorette.

(You might recognize Lauren in the pretty blue print shirt – she’s the friend who triggered my Healthy Tipping Point and ran the Disney Marathon with me.)

I’m sure you understand that I can’t blog all the gory details of last night (what happens at the bachelorette party, stays at the bachelorette party!), but the night was filled with dancing, drinking, laughing, and PIZZA!

Good times.

For dinner, we went to Bar Louie.  Two of the girls in the group (including me of course) are vegetarians, and another has a severe wheat/gluten allergy, and we figured the menu at Bar Louie is extensive enough that we would all be able to find something to eat.

Although the menu had tons of vegetarian options, I decided to check out the appetizer menu as well.  Most of the veg items on the main menu seemed pretty heavy (like cheese and mushroom burgers).  Checking out the appetizer menu is a great way to lighten dinners out – and save money.

I found an awesome hummus, tabbouleh, and tzatziki platter with pita and cucumbers.  Score!

Here are my other tips for eating healthy in groups when you have a special diet request (I talk a lot about being a vegetarian, but I suppose most of this can just be applied to healthy eating in general):

And… I’m off to round up the troops and explore the city for the day!

Have a great Saturday!

Checking out the appetizer menu is a great tip. I often do that and am surprised to find full-size portions for a fraction of the price.

  • Sandra May 29, 2010, 10:55 am

Thanks! I don’t see where you can shop online on their website, so I have my mom in the states running over to there to see if she can find it! So adorable!

I love your outfit, Caitlin! You look gorgeous. Glad you ladies had so much fun! I recently attended my first bachelorette party 🙂 but it wasn’t “traditional” bc the bride hates bars/alcohol/craziness… It was still fun, though!

  • Lauren May 29, 2010, 11:09 am

Caitlin, I LOVE your dress, you always look absolutely adorable.

  • Betsy May 29, 2010, 11:55 am

That sounds like so much fun! My best friend has celiac disease and I have been cutting back on my meat intake so whenever we go out to dinner it is quite the search! Fun tip for your wheat sensitive friend: Bertuccis now has a gluten-free menu! My friend and I have yet to try it, but it has potential!

  • Chandra H May 29, 2010, 12:01 pm

i second/third/fourth — that is a great dress! 😀 glad you had such a fun time with your friends!!

  • Jenny May 29, 2010, 12:21 pm

  • Michele May 29, 2010, 12:26 pm

I have only been to Bar Louie once with friends out in Michigan, but their turkey burger was to die for!!!! And they had some pretty cool drink options too.

  • Cynthia (It All Changes) May 29, 2010, 12:35 pm

I love the appetizer menus for great lighter vegetarian options. That’s been the best way I’ve eaten out as a new vegetarian.

  • Katherine May 29, 2010, 1:20 pm

I don’t know the last time I went to a restaurant and didn’t special order my food! haha I must be a tough customer

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) May 29, 2010, 1:33 pm

Sounds like you had a fun time!!! I love that you fly out for your friends bachelorette parties – you are a good friend!

  • Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter May 29, 2010, 1:49 pm

Thank you for the wonderful advice on being a vegetarian. I have been thinking about going vegetarian. Right now, I consider myself a flexitarian, meaning I eat a very little amount of meat, but I eat meat when I’m a guest, or my parents serve it to me. After reading your advice, I feel like I am at the perfect place for me regarding eating meat.

I always check the appetizer menu for veg options too– usually I like that stuff better anyway!

    Have a great time!!

  • Run Sarah May 29, 2010, 2:46 pm

I find picking a few veg options from the appetizer menu often more enjoyable than the typical veg burger or pasta option. Glad you’re having an awesome time!

  • Amanda@Thegrainsofparadise May 29, 2010, 2:47 pm

So great to see veggie Mezze Platters getting so mainstream. Makes dining out so much easier for us Veg Heads. Aloha:-)!

    • caitlin May 30, 2010, 3:48 pm

  • Gracie (complicated day) May 29, 2010, 6:54 pm

Your ruffled skirt and Lauren’s one shouldered top are both fabulous and need to be in my closet!

  • GirlonRaw May 29, 2010, 8:33 pm

Oooh looks like a fun time. I love catching up with my girlfriends.

  • Amber K @ sparkpeople May 29, 2010, 11:28 pm

Looks like you’re having a blast! I had no idea Bar Louie was a chain. That was a favorite eat spot when we lived in Ann Arbor.
