On Christmas morning, we woke up bright and early and headed into Disney!
The decision to spend the holiday at Disney was completely spontaneous – and totally fun. We decided to go down, packed the car that night, and left the next day! We “planned†the trip from our phones in the car.
Henry has just started to get really into the Disney characters (he loves Mickey but adores Donald because MomHTP does an amazing Donald impression), and we knew he’d have a blast “meeting†everyone.
Claire spent 98% of the time in her stroller, tucked safely under a blanket, but I think she had fun, too… when she actually cracked her eyes open (which rarely happens).
My advice for going to Disney? Seriously, you *must* download their app. It has a GPS-enabled map and updates you on the wait times for the rides in real time.
But the best feature is that you can use the app to book Fast Passes for rides. You can do three Fast Passes per ticket and, truthfully, three rides per day was a perfect amount for a toddler. We never waited more than 10 minutes for a ride, which was amazing because the park was otherwise packed.
We did some rides as a family (It’s a Small World and Pirates of the Caribbean) because Claire could go on those in the Ergo. But usually, we tag-teamed the rides so Henry could go twice; toddlers LOVE repetition so that worked out well.
I was very impressed that Henry actually went on a ROLLERCOASTER (the Barnstormer). He cleared the height restriction by a hair (truly, I think his curly hair made him juuuust tall enough), and he absolutely LOVED the twists and turns. I swear – he will grow up to be an adult who skydives and bungee jumps.
We stayed off-resort at the Caribe Royal, which is a suite-style hotel a few miles from the park. A suite is absolutely clutch with two kids.
(I remembered to pack Henry’s train tracks this trip – he was so much happier as a result.)
I would recommend this hotel to anyone! It was really nice, relatively affordable, and close to the theme parks. Plus, the pool was great. There was a wading pool and a playground, too.
See? Constantly sleeping! Except at night, of course. Hah.
Good times. <3 It was a wonderful family trip and exactly what we needed. And it was pretty fun to do something so spur of the moment.
My New Year’s Resolution
For the first time in a long time, I don’t have a fitness-related NYR! Well – I certainly have health and fitness goals for 2015 – I’m signed up for a 5K in March and an Olympic triathlon in August (wahoo!). But they’re not really “resolutions†per say.
My NYR is to read a book a week for the entire year – so 52 books! (I got this idea from the Happy Herbivore; here’s her post for 52 Books in 2014). I think this will be a challenge but not impossible (I’m a fast reader; it’s more about simply replacing mindless phone browsing or TV watching with reading). I’m excited about this resolution because it will encourage me to use the library more, which I really want to do, not just for myself, but for my kids, too. I used to be really great about reading every single day with Henry, but we’ve kind of fallen out of the habit. And of course, reading to Claire will be very important in just a few months. So I hope that actually getting to the library for my own books will encourage me to check out books for the kiddos, too.
So – what books do you recommend that I read? And what’s your resolution?
We went to the Bank of America headquarters to see the Leonard Bearstein Symphony Orchestra. Apparently this is a Charlotte “thing†– Leonard and his animatronic orchestra give free daily performances of Christmas songs throughout the holidays. I thought Henry would enjoy it.
It was a hit with the other kiddos. They all stood REALLY close to the bears and danced to their songs…
Meanwhile, my brave boy wouldn’t move from my lap or the safety zone of the stroller! I think he was super scared of the bears. They were kind of creepy…
BUST!!! Maybe next year, he will think they are cool.
Claire slept through the whole thing in her Ergo. Hah. This is currently a running theme in her life – she sleeps all the time (I am not complaining).
Afterwards, we went and got pizza. Henry was excited for that. So was I! Claire stayed asleep, obviously.
The bears weren’t fun, but Henry loved driving a broken car video game. He did it foreeeeever, and we had to drag him away. Toddler are awesome.
Other than that outing, we’ve been laying pretty low – but now we’re doing something REALLY exciting. I can’t wait to tell you about our big Christmas surprise! <3 <3 <3
I really loved putting together the Sweet Santa Photo Contest post. Now more than ever, I so appreciated seeing all the sweet babes with their wonderful holiday smiles. That being said… there is something really, really funny about Scary Santa photos. I’m sure Scary Santa pics aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s kind of a childhood right of passage, isn’t it?
I’m not sure why wee ones are so freaked out by Santa – maybe it’s the beard, maybe it’s the red suit, maybe it’s just the pressure of being ‘on’ in front of the camera. But man, oh man – does Santa elicit some major freak outs.
Per the usual, the Scary Santa photos were judged based on the following categories: the overall creepiness of Santa; Santa’s own freaked out expression; and the oh-so-dramatic expression on the kiddo’s face.
First up… The Scary Honorable Mentions
Hilary wrote, “Our daughter Ainsley is 13 months and was not too thrilled to see Santa last week!â€
Erin wrote, “This is Gavin. He was so excited to go see Santa, we waited in a very long line, got to the front, and he quickly changed his mind about sitting with him!â€
Jamie wrote, “My daughter, Ona, was so excited to see Santa until we actually got up close! Santa cracks me up in the background!â€
Cynthia wrote, “This is my December baby, D, and her first encounter with Santa (slightly vacant Santa, if you ask me). This girl is happy 98% of the time and is generally fearless when she meets new people, but Santa obviously rubbed her the wrong way. Classic picture that I will cherish forever!â€
Lauren said, “Hunter and Holland had different experiences…â€
Kristy wrote, “This is Claire, age 15 months.â€
Sarah said, “This is Colton!â€
Jessica wrote, “Sissy was ok. Little brother not so much… This is Weston and Shane Leigh.â€
Sara said, “Here are my 4 and poor Santa. The three older ones (G, A and J) were so excited to talk to Santa but I think when C(clearly not happy) got so upset they weren’t sure what to think. Makes me laugh every time I look at this. And A(red dress) has that look on her face in every picture! Can’t wait to see what the teen years bring when I’m sure there will be comments that accompany that look.â€
Kristen said, “This was the first Santa experience for Brayden as he is only 8 months. My husband and I were so excited and anxious to see how Brayden would react. He was smiley the entire time we were in line (2 hours!) and as soon as he left my arms he instantly broke out in crocodile tears! Let’s just say this is a picture we will always treasure!â€
Trisha said, “This week I took my 18- month-old son Jack to meet Santa for the first time and it went just as I expected — he totally freaked, so I scooted in the pic to try and calm him down. What I didn’t expect was for Santa to be doing some eye rubbing. I guess it’s a classic photo all around.â€
Kassie said, “Here is 7 month old Evan meeting Santa. It took me 15 minutes to calm him back down!â€
Ashley wrote, “Here is a picture of my 11 month old son, Jack. This was taken the week of Thanksgiving this year and he obviously was not ready to get into the Christmas spirit!â€
Liz said, “This is Trey’s third year visiting Santa. He was really excited about meeting him and was all smiles walking up with his daddy. He even high fived santa but then wanted no part of getting any closer. Finally we said "just take him Santa" and Santa grabbed him. Trey got so mad he threw down his candy cane which resulted in an eruption of laughter not only from us but from all the families behind us in line! Here’s to next year!â€
Sarah said, “Give Santa a straw and little Olivia might be slurped up! She looks like she knows this isn’t right.â€
Molly said, “Milena & Mason – another successful Santa picture!â€
Tara said, “My one year old daughter, Bailey, was NOT a fan of Santa!â€
Yvonne wrote, “This is Jackson… Sssh little boy, I’m Santa Claus!â€
K wrote, “This is T and B. T has historically not liked Santa so I was surprised he would even sit on his lap. This was B’s first experience and let’s just say she was not having it. The camera woman was not paying attention at all and I ended up almost screaming at her to take the photo! B was having an utter meltdown. Plus, Santa is kind of creepy…â€
Erin said, “This is my son Brendan with this creepy Santa. My brother says it looks like Santa had a little too much eggnog.â€
Caitlin sent in this picture of her Little One!
Jaime said, “This is John W (20 months).â€

Jess said, “This is Saye (17 mos) and her visit to Santa… which apparently got really scary!â€
Allison wrote, “Here is Scarlett 6 month hating Santa while her sister Serena 3 years looks completely indifferent.â€
Karamie wrote, “This is Kase’s first Christmas. I thought we would be safe this year and get a happy picture…not so much! Santa doesn’t look too excited either.â€
Alex wrote, “This is my 17 month old daughter, Audrey. She was clearly not impressed… oh well, maybe next year!â€
Alex wrote, “Our son "S" and the Macy’s Santa.â€
Kelly wrote, “My three month old June, would not smile!! She just sat there with this scared expression on her face. It was hilarious!â€
Ashleigh wrote, “This is Ian… He was not a fan of Santa.â€
Lindsey wrote, “This is my son "C" and he obviously wasn’t too happy with his visit. The guy taking the picture was scarier than Santa himself though.â€
Stephanie wrote, “Lillian was all smiles before and after the photo…. Just not a fan of being held by Santa as mom and dad walk away to take pic!
Elizabeth wrote, “This is a picture of my first two children with Santa. This picture was taken two years ago; Megan is 3 and Tyler is almost 2. As you can see, Megan looks skeptical, Tyler is scared out of his mind and Santa is not amused. I love this picture for so many reasons.â€
Shannon wrote, “Here is a picture of my 15 month old, Alev, with Santa.â€
Leanne wrote, “Here’s a picture of my husband and I with our kiddos- Delaney, 27 months, and Jack, 10 months- at Breakfast With Santa at my grandfather’s hunting and fishing club. As you can see, Delaney and Jack are less than thrilled with the Big Guy. They were two of the last kids to see him and the ONLY ones who cried! This is so typical of my life with "two under two". Haha!â€
Tricia wrote, “Here is Nolan (13 months) during his very first encounter with Santa. It’s safe to say he was not a fan.â€
Kristin wrote, “Clearly loved it.â€
Alaina said, “The terrified toddler is my 20-month-old, Brandon. I was so proud to make it to the mall as a family – and then I realized that in the darkness of our mud room I had put on two different boots. Figured no one would notice – until Brandon refused to go near Santa without mommy and daddy. So there was my zombie mommy mistake, front and center, immortalized for all to see. One brown boot, one black boot. The picture doesn’t capture the level of mayhem we caused — there was a Christmas concert letting out next to the Santa station, so quite a crowd got to see Brandon put on a show. Santa doesn’t look too happy with us either. Apparently it runs in the family — my in laws have a photo of my husband, Michael, at the same age, hurling a candy cane at the photographer in protest.â€
Christy wrote, “My 17 mo daughter had a visit from Santa at her daycare which i came in to capture. This is the one and only picture I had time to get! The terror in her face, the grimace on Santa and the daycare provider’s concern all add up to one scary Santa moment!!â€
Nicole wrote, “Gavyn my 3 month old on the left and Calan (20 months) on the right. His personality is very hit or miss. He was already in a foul mood. Dad said, "let’s skip Santa, he’s going to scream." I said, "and it will be hilarious" and so he screamed, and it was great. #momknowsbestâ€
Danielle wrote, “Max was not a fan of Santa this year and his big brother Dominic couldn’t understand why…â€
Allison wrote, “Well, more like Grumpy Santa. This is my daughter Avonlea from this year. She only fussed for about 5 seconds (the photographer pulled out a Minnie Mouse doll, and she was fine), but apparently the Grumpy Santa thought it was going to go on a lot longer. The funny (sad) thing is that we got these pictures taken on December THIRD–that Santa had a LONG season of screaming kids ahead of him!â€
And…
Here are the finalists!
FINALIST #1 – Amanda wrote, “Zoe wouldn’t let Santa anywhere near her. Santa had to "go feed his reindeer" and sneak back in behind her…â€
FINALIST #2 – Jacquelynn wrote, “This is my 1.5 year old son Ashton. We knew it wouldn’t go well, but the picture turned out priceless!â€
FINALIST #3 – Kate says, “This is Brody and Stella!â€
FINALIST #4 – Lindsay wrote, “This is my daughter, Savannah Lee, 17 months old. She wasn’t too fond of her new friend but Santa sure was having a jolly good time!â€
FINALIST #5 – Sarah wrote, “Eloise was pretty happy and laid back when we got there… We sat in the photos with her and then I plopped her on Santa’s lap and ran out of the pic for this epically terrifying look. Santa deserves a raise, he was so sweet and patient.â€
So – who’s the winner of Scary Santa 2014? Sweet Santa 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5? Leave a comment with the number, and I’ll tally up the votes and crown the winner after Christmas.
If I were stuck on a deserted island and could only eat three foods for the rest of my life, they would be: peaches, chocolate, and Greek yogurt. I love yogurt – especially when it’s paired with raw oatmeal (try it – I swear it’s delicious) or crunchy granola.
I used to buy non-flavored yogurt and sweeten it with a touch of honey, but I fell out of the habit. Why? Well, I really, really like the taste of sweetened vanilla yogurt… so I buy it despite the fact that most brands are loaded with sugar (and despite the fact that I know I feel more energetic throughout the day if I don’t have a sugary breakfast). That’s why I was SO excited to get a chance to try out siggi’s Icelandic-styled strained yogurt. The tagline for the brand is "More protein than sugar." A flavored yogurt with less sugar and no artificial sweeteners? I’m in!
Read on for a siggi’s coupon and a granola recipe!
Drum roll, please! It’s time for Sweet Santa 2014. Thanks to everyone who sent in their pictures. It was so hard to choose finalists – every kiddo was so sweet. <3 But I whittled it down to FIVE FINALISTS (which are at the end of the post), and I need your help choosing the winner.
But first…
Here are all the Honorable Mentions of Cuteness!
Jess wrote, “This is my 10 month old daughter Evie and my 3.5 year old son Henry. I really thought I would be sending in a scary Santa to you but the stars aligned for me.â€
Rachel wrote, “This is my 5 year old daughter Siena. This is the same Santa we visit every single year and this is the first time she would sit on his lap. She is SO excited this Christmas and can’t wait to get a Muppet Babies phone… Which reminds me, does anyone know where you can find a Muppet Babies phone??â€
Helen wrote, “This is my 5 month old son, Oscar. He just woke up from a sleep as we were walking past the Santa in the mall last week. There was no line and I thought ‘might as well try’ thinking I’d get a terrible photo and or screaming and tears, but figured I didn’t have to buy it! To my surprise, he hammed it up for the camera, Sophie the giraffe in hand, and absolutely loved it, laughing hysterically. Santa, as you can see, wasn’t that impressed…â€
Kristen wrote, “This is Wyatt Robert in his first photo with Santa at 6 months.â€
Chelsea said, “This is Sophia and Allessandra. First Santa where we got both to kind of smile.â€
Shannan wrote, This is my girl Lane at 14 months. I couldn’t pass up the little elf outfit! She even had elf slippers on!â€
Jennifer wrote, “It was the first year my daughter, Eve (3 1/2 years), was excited to see Santa- Charlotte, at 19 months, not so much. She was terrified and cried hysterically after we placed her on Santa’s lap. This Santa was so incredibly sweet. It was his idea to seat the girls next to him so that Charlotte could be by her big sister. We were snapping pictures while they talked, encouraging Charlotte to smile. Nothing worked. Completely unprompted, Eve leaned to her sister, hugged her, kissed her on the cheek and said, "It’s OK Charlie. Smile. Santa’s nice. I’m right here." Charlotte calmed down and although we didn’t get any super happy/smiling pictures, we got this shot and I love it. I really doubt anything is going to top that moment for me this Christmas. When the girls are sick, sad, scared, whatever, I always whisper to them, "It’s OK. I’m right here." And I always believed they would have a special bond as sisters, but to see it so strong and present already – well, that was the best Christmas gift ever!â€
Kim wrote, “Our little Nora visited Santa at 3 months old. I had been told by friends to prepare for an epic meltdown but as soon as she sat in his lap, she was all smiles!!â€
Ashley said, “This is a picture of my 11 month old son, Jack. For the majority of the pictures he was not enjoying the experience. They were able to capture a few pictures at the end that weren’t too traumatic looking.â€
Ashley said, “My girls, Clementine (toddler, 2.25) and Lola (3 months). My husband has taken Clemmy every year and this year he took them both – his first solo outing with both kids, haha. Fun fact – my girls have the exact same birthday!â€
Jennifer wrote, “Here is my baby Connor- this is his first Christmas!! He’s 5 months old and did so great with Santa. I was so happy!â€
Lauren said, “Ethan was really excited when he saw Santa from line. When it was his turn, we took him out of the stroller and he said "Santa!" and ran right over. Once he was actually on Santa’s lap, all he could do was stare; he just couldn’t believe it was really him!â€
Caitlin said, “Maggie (7 months) met Santa after a long time spent at a holiday event at my hometown. Despite having a dirty diaper and being hungry, she was really calm and seemed really intrigued by both Santa and the stuffed animal she received from him!â€
Abby wrote, “This is Layla and James. Naughty and Nice!â€
Tori said, “T met Santa last week. She was so super excited to visit the "North Pole" AKA Bass Pro, and was more concerned where the reindeer were than asking for any presents. She is 3 years old.â€
Holly said, “This is Riley (10 weeks old!) and Sleeping Santa.â€
Sara wrote, “This is my son James meeting Santa. He was 2.5 weeks old at the time. So sweet!â€
Heather wrote, “This is 6 month old Sawyer. We expected his first Santa encounter to be horrible. It was way past nap time and we has to wait a long time in line to meet this creepy Santa Claus. When we finally got there, he was nothing but smiles!!â€
Sierra wrote, “Here is Noah, he’s 5 1/2 months old. We couldn’t get him to smile but he was pretty content just hanging out with Santa.â€
Allison said, “This is Nikola. He just acted like he knew what he was supposed to do!â€
Amber said, “For some reason, my kids Love Santa!â€
Claire said, “Caleb was just waking from a nap but Kate was excited! Every year after our town Christmas parade, a local business hosts Santa and Mrs. Clause at their homemade gingerbread house. They are escorted in on the top of a fire truck (this year included Olaf! – that is the extra picture included here). Then all the kids get to sit with Santa at the gingerbread house, drink hot chocolate, and eat cookies. It was a lot of fun!â€
Alison says, “This is Bethany’s 1st Christmas!â€
Dominique said, “We were able to meet Santa at a local preschool, and it was so quiet and intimate! There was enough time that Jackson (who will be 1 on Dec 27!) could he used to the idea of sitting with Santa- and then he ended up just hanging out on his lap talking to him for 10 minutes!â€
And…
Here are the finalists!
FINALIST #1 – Brianne wrote, “This is our sweet Calista visiting Santa this year! After a long, LONG wait at our local mall which left her in a less than stellar mood, she perked right up the moment we sat her down on Santa’s lap. Added bonus – the cute Target headband I threw on her at the last minute matched Santa’s suit perfectly!"
FINALIST #2 – Kassie wrote, “Here is Natalie meeting Santa. She is 5 months old in this picture.â€
FINALIST #3 – Kendra said, “My son, Caiden, was so proud to give Santa a picture he colored for him. The look of pride on his face just melts my mama heart! It is also a pretty convincing Santa if you ask me! He was really engaged with Caiden in conversation about the picture which I know made my son’s day!â€
FINALIST #4 – Leatitia wrote, “This is my three year old son Damien with Santa. He loves him! We saw Santa a few days later at the grocery store. He was shopping with his Santa’s hat on and being sweet to all the kids. He remembered my son had already asked for his gifts, out of hundred of kids he sees every day. We told my 7 year old niece how we saw SANTA HIMSELF at the grocery store and she said: “He probably bought TONS of cookies and candies!â€
FINALIST #5 – Stephanie wrote, “Here is my daughter Molly (5) meeting Santa last year. She wanted to see him so bad even though her older siblings didn’t want to. She’s telling him what she wants for Christmas in the picture.â€
