I have a question… Why do you dream about people you haven’t seen in 10 years (and really weren’t that close to, anyway)?  I feel like every night is a high school reunion in my sleep.  I’d love to know exactly how the brain works when it comes to dreaming.

Here’s a familiar friend!

I’ve gotten into the habit of cooking my oats on high (because I’m always rushed) but have been switching back to ‘slow and low.’

So much better.  Also with a dash of milk on top – Southern style!

Time to get my WEDNESDAY on.  Smile  Look, today I know what day of the week it is!

So weirdly timely–I dreamed last night about a friend in college whom I almost dated, but didn’t, and haven’t seen him in years. We were hanging out in DC on the 4th of July (neither of us has ever lived there) and salsa danced (we’ve never done that together). Who knows why are brains do things they do? Heh…

YUM that oatmeal looks like a desserty crumble or crisp!

  • Claire @ Live and Love to Eat January 18, 2012, 9:21 am

It is so strange when those people end up in your dreams – it really throws me off when I remember the dream the next day, too.

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat January 18, 2012, 9:26 am

I totally know what you mean! I have no idea why but sometimes I dream about people I haven’t seen since I lived overseas about 5 years ago. I’m wondering if maybe I’m scrolling through Facebook and their names appear without me actually being aware of it. Crazy!

My mind is always dreaming up people I’ve had arguments with. It could be the oldest, most insignificant thing in the world. But, the kicker is, in my dreams, they always win the argument, even if I was right in real life. Ah the tortured subconscious mind.

I think that dreams are a compilation of the things we see, hear and think about whether we truly register it or not on a conscious level. Maybe you have been thinking about your own teenage years or perhaps watching lot of Glee?? 🙂

  • Christy January 18, 2012, 9:36 am

I think your dreams have more to do with feelings than with actual people or places. But since your brain has those tangible memories stored, it uses those to illustrate a feeling or emotion. Like maybe you are feeling something now that you felt in high school so your brain is recalling that event or person? I had so many crazy dreams while pregnant! You should keep a journal!

It’s so weird that your post involves dreaming – because I actually had a dream about you last night! (Ha, that sounds totally creepy.) In my dream, you were full term and about to have your baby. You went to the hospital and ended up having your baby – a girl – in just one push! Your husband promptly bundled her up, strapped her onto his back and rode a motorcycle home, while you walked around telling everyone how shocked you were that she came out with one push! What the heck did I eat last night?

I WISH THIS IS HOW IT GOES DOWN 🙂

  • Sneakers2Sandals January 18, 2012, 10:05 am

That looks delicious! I’ve just gotten into oats bc of you and mealsandmiles…lovin’ it!

  • Chelsea January 18, 2012, 10:15 am

That’s so true about dreams! We dream about the weirdest things sometimes with people we’ve only met like once a twice.

  • Katie @ Peace Love & Oats January 18, 2012, 10:31 am

I definitely cook my oats too fast, but I always seem to run out of water/milk quickly! What kind of liquid to oats ratio do you use for slowly cooked oats?

  • Kristin January 18, 2012, 10:58 am

There is a theory about dreams that I now use pretty often thanks to my therapist and that is that you are everyone in your dream. So if you have a dream about you and a highschool someone or other you are not only you but another part of you is also that highschool person. That helps you to work through things you are dealing with about yourself.

I love dreams and think about them quite a bit and they have been very benefitial to me throughout therapy. I had a dream I was a dying baby bird and that dream changed my whole life really. Well, It would be more accurate to say it changed my whole outlook on life! Happy Dreaming!

    • CaitlinHTP January 18, 2012, 10:59 am

Holy f**k. In light on my dream, that makes a LOT of really creepy sense.

  • Katie @ Katie Without Restrictions January 18, 2012, 10:59 am

Ahh I have dreams like that all.the.time. To be fair though, I just have dreams in general all the time ~ I once had a coworker tell me that I dream more than anyone she knows, after I came in one morning to tell her about yet another nutty dream I had had the night before 🙂

  • Amanda @ AmandaRunsNY January 18, 2012, 11:01 am

My dreams have been so odd lately. I’ve been imagining getting romantic with the most unlikeliest of people ever, and it’s really starting to weird me out. Are my dreams telling me something? Is this just what happens when I’m single and don’t even the teeniest crush going on?

  • Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) January 18, 2012, 11:03 am

I would love to know more about dreams. I find it fascinating to know what and why people dream what they do. Breakfast looks like perfect fuel today! I hope you have a great one Caitlin!

  • PressureCookerDiaries January 18, 2012, 11:12 am

I definitely had weird dream last night involving high school people I haven’t seen in ten years…

I think Kristen’s answer is right. The more I think about it (and my dreams) the more things make sense.

I study the brain for work (not dreams though) and it is a weirdly wonderful thing. Fascinating.

  • Anne January 18, 2012, 11:17 am

I think I read it in A.J. Jacobs’ My experimental life: There is something with your brain that makes the years between 10-23 your most thought of – the most ‘available’ in your brain.

  • Marathon Beauty January 18, 2012, 12:02 pm

I totally get those crazy dreams! Also that breakfast looks so tasty!

  • FinnP January 18, 2012, 12:02 pm

This has happened to me a few times but the weird thing is that I always meet the person the next day! Once I dreamed of someone who I barely knew in Ireland and the next day I met her in New Zealand! It’s freaky!

  • Bronwyn January 18, 2012, 12:02 pm

I feel like dreams just use images to tell you stuff about your current life, and sometimes they take those images from other times in your life. I know I only really dream when other things are going on in my life that are confusing or really bothering me.

  • Khushboo January 18, 2012, 12:03 pm

I totally had a dream about a girl from high school who I haven’t spoken to since graduation- was SO random!

  • Laura @ She Eats Well January 18, 2012, 12:10 pm

I too would love to know more about what my dreams mean. Sometimes it is SO strange who pops into them. The most random people! Also, my dreams are quite interesting after watching Law & Order SVU…eek!

  • chelsey @ clean eating chelsey January 18, 2012, 12:27 pm

Woohooo! I’m glad you’ve got it all hammered out on what day it is today. You can seriously blame that on pregnancy brain! 🙂

I love cooking my oats low and slow. THey get super creamy and delicious!

  • Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife January 18, 2012, 12:37 pm

    Yes, it’s WEDnesday!! 😉

I need oats back in my life. The end. (yours looks awesome!)

  • Deanna January 18, 2012, 12:43 pm

I blame Facebook. I once looked at someone’s wedding pics and Brett Kiesel (from the Steelers) on the ‘book before bed, and then I dreamed I was walking down the aisle at my wedding with a giant beard like Kisel! WTF!

  • Janie January 18, 2012, 12:56 pm

so weird that you mention the high school reunion dreams, because i have been having them A LOT. you’re never in them though…it’s the most random people. so weird. xoxooxoxxo

    p.s. you look beautiful pregnant!

  • Gabby @ Gabby's Gluten-Free January 18, 2012, 1:03 pm

I just had a dream last night that had people I haven’t seen in at least 6 years! Crazy.

  • Amber K January 18, 2012, 2:46 pm

I’m constantly dreaming about completely random people. No idea why, but my brain is sure an interesting place!

  • Allison K January 18, 2012, 5:15 pm

I am not sure if someone has already posted this, I have a hard time scrolling through comments on my slightly dumb smart phone, but I have read that pregnant women often dream about people from their pasts…something about your mind preparing to go through this major life change. And I can attest…lately I have been dreaming about people from elementary school! Some of them I haven’t seen or thought about in like 15 years.

  • Johanna B January 18, 2012, 5:18 pm

When I was pregnant I dreamed about all my old boyfriends. It seemed like at least once a week I was getting back together with someone from long before. Weird! Maybe I was saying good-bye.

  • Sarah January 18, 2012, 7:54 pm

I love a little extra milk on top!

  • Lexi @ Cura Personalis Foodie January 21, 2012, 12:21 am

Haha I never realized that was Southern style, but it would make sense sine my Dad does that!
