NEDA Week Kick-Off

Good morning!  I’m on a long bike ride, but I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you…


Today kicks off the beginning of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.  NEDA is dedicated to providing education, resources and support to those affected by eating disorders.

NEDA NEDAwareness

Operation Beautiful is a featured organization for NEDA Week.  In the spirit of NEDA Week, Operation Beautiful will be sharing information about eating disorders, as well as stories from girls and women who have overcome an eating disorders with the help of positive self-talk or Operation Beautiful notes.


Here’s a list of 20 Ways You Can Learn to Love and Appreciate Your Body RIGHT NOW!  I especially like tip #16: Keep a list of 10 positive things about yourself–without mentioning your appearance.  Add to it!


As a community, we should all care about and promote NEDA Week, even if we don’t suffer from an ED ourselves.  In the spirit of NEDA Week, I’m going to list 10 positive qualities about myself, and I’d love you to do the same in the comments section!


  1. I am a really good fur-mom to Maggie and James.
  2. I care a lot about my friends and take the time to help them.
  3. I keep my house looking clean and presentable.
  4. I donate to charities, like Children International.
  5. I answer e-mails quickly.
  6. I help my Husband reach his goals.
  7. I make time for myself by meditating or going for runs.
  8. I am a good cook.
  9. I am not good with money, but I’m trying to learn how.
  10. I’m pretty smart.

    1. I am trying to better myself by getting a degree
    2. I try my best to see the best in everyone, no matter what
    3. I respect other peoples opinions and always try to see where other people are coming from
    4. I have a sponser child through world vision and she is so cute
    5. I work for non profit centre and even though the pay isn’t great…it’s rewarding and I think makes me a better person
    6. I support my boyfriend and try to be the *non nagging* girlfriend 😉
    7. I have recovered from two eating disorders
    8. I think I am pretty funny and positive and love to spread that around 🙂
    9. I love my family and spend lots of time with them, even if they drive me crazy!
    10. I try to be supportive of all of my friends crazy life adventures and endeavours no matter how crazy! 🙂

    1. I changed my life through diet and exercise and didn’t use drugs, surgeries, or other means.

    2. I’m a good mother.

    3. I respect all people and accept them regardless of their religion, race or sexuality.

    4. I’m a good cook.

    5. I’m a good nurse.

    6. I like to try new things and it has really opened up my life to new experiences.

    7. I make sure to take time for myself everyday.

    8. I can honestly say that I can do anything I put my mind to. I have been sucessful in everything I have attempted in my life.

    9. I quit smoking after smoking a pack a day for 8 years.

    Love this challenge (yes, I think it’s a challenge!)

    5. I can swim several miles in the ocean. Into the waves! Or I did this a few times. 🙂

    Oooh this is tough!! Hmm..

    5. I try and reply to all comments on my blog
    6. I try and be supportive and loving to my family, by doing little things for them (ie buying my sister a mug I knew she’d love :p)

    That’s a tough exercise! I want to do it more to increase my self confidence 🙂

    Fantastic way to start the week off! Here goes my ten..
    1. I am intelligent.
    2. I have the ability to ace my exams, and enjoy it.
    3. I am naturally passionate about learning, and am GOING to be a scientist, yo.
    4. I make pretty darn good cakes!
    5. I am a good friend.
    6. I’m funny.
    7. I don’t judge people, and always think before I act.
    8. I’ve managed to survive three family crisises, while recovering from ED, keeping on top of coursework, and acing exams.
    9. I have fantastic hair.
    10. I don’t need to be told to work: I do it, and enjoy doing it. 🙂

    1. I’ve maintained a 110 pound weight loss.
    2. I make a mean chicken parm.
    3. I do my best to care for my husband every moment of the day.
    4. I rock at getting laundry cleaned and dried (but not folded & put away!)
    5. I am good at my job – event planning.
    6. I am working through my disordered eating and night eating disorder by taking baby steps and realizing that each day is a new journey.
    7. Quitting my old job was the best decision I made in 2009.
    8. I am uber organized.
    9. I love living in a fantastic city surrounded by my family.
    10. I am FINALLY happy again!

    A challenge indeed….

    Just wanted to let you know that I was listening to the radio this morning in Raleigh, NC and their was a program talking about NEDA and the nutritionist speaking talked about Operation Beautiful and encouraged listeners to post positive-notes around their workplace, school, etc. It is just so awesome that Operation Beautiful has such a far reach! I’m going to go post a note myself!

    This is a really good idea, I am not good at doing these things!

    This is so hard, but in a good way!

    1 – I lost 55 lbs through hard work alone and feel happy and healthy in my body.
    2 – I’m able to look at the bright side of life.
    3 – I am deeply loyal to the people that I care about.
    4 – I work hard to be the best kindergarten teacher I can be and I am a strong advocate for my kiddos.
    5 – I taught myself to cook and I’m pretty good at it!
    6 – I was able to motivate friends and family to live healthier along with me.
    7 – I am funny and try to find humor in every day – or so I’m told!
    8 – Running is one of my biggest challenges and one of my biggest accomplishments…I’m proud that I’ve persevered and learned to love it!
    9 – I am kind to others and try to make them feel comfortable around me.
    10 – I appreciate simple things, like smiles and hellos.

    1. I have worked extremely hard this last year and a half of my Master’s program, and it is paying off now with excellent doctural program offers.
    2. I am in the final stages of my thesis!
    3. I am driven, and I WILL write a book someday.
    4. I am a good big sister, and my sisters know that I am always there.
    5. I work hard to be a good girlfriend–a good support system, a source of encouragement and relaxation, etc.
    6. I make awesome shrimp scampi and cream cheese brownies.
    7. I have been putting time into volunteering lately and giving in various ways to causes that are important to me.
    8. I am a hard worker.
    9. I forgive myself for my imperfections (such as my complete inability to clean my room)–they add character!
    10. Generally speaking, I choose happy.

    This is harder than it looked, for me anyway!

    1. I take pride in cleaning the home and quite enjoy doing housework!
    2. I’m a good cook
    3. I’m great with kids, they respond really positively to me
    4. I often feel shy, but when it comes down to it I’m a great conversationalist
    5. I’m very loyal
    6. I don’t find it difficult to sacrifice some time to myself if it means being there for a friend or loved one when they need me
    7. I spend a lot of my time worrying about others and making sure they feel happy! (I THINK this is a good thing! some people view it as negative?!)
    8. I’m creative
    9. I’ve got a very contagious giggle – and can easily burst into a giggle fit at the most random things
    10. I feel both sympathetic and empathetic toward others!

    These are all in my own opinion, might not be true of course!

    1. I’m a good student – never skip, best grades I can.
    2. I’m a good sister – get on well with my siblings
    3. I’m a good skater – I try very hard
    4. I have nice hair (haha sounds so braggy but just got it cut!)
    5. I am friendly to people I do not know
    6. I’m good on pleases and thank yous, manners like that
    7. I am a somewhat respected blogger in my field

    4. I am very forgiving.
    5. I have managed to do really well in school these past two years, despite being a full time mom and having so much on my plate.
    6. I love to laugh. I might not be the funniest person in the world but I consider “loves to laugh” to be a positive attribute.
    7. I love my family so much it hurts and I’m working on making sure I show it more.
    8. I have gotten really good at healthy baking, fooling even my picky husband in the process.

    1. I am a loving wife, daughter, and friend.
    2. I snort when I laugh, really really hard
    3. I can run 9 miles AND talk now!
    4. I am independent yet married.
    5. I have a great job and am doing well.
    6. I’m healthier now than I was a year ago.
    7. I can do 22 male pushups!
    8. I can hold a plank for 2 minutes!
    9. My skin loves the fact that I drink almost a gallon of water per day.
    10. I have gorgeous hair!

    1.) I continued to stay motivated to graduate from college even through the hardballs that the military threw at us. I am happy to say that I will be an official college graduate this year!
    2.) I can run long distances
    3.) I have beautiful eyes
    4.) I am a good student
    5.) I am great at organizing
    6.) I am a homeowner at the young at of 24
    7.) I’m good a saving money
    8.) I am an excellent softball player
    9.) I am great at playing the flute and piccolo
    10.) I know what I want to do with my life in terms of a career.

    1. I am a (usually) gentle, patient, ever-loving mother.
    2. I am an attentive friend.
    3. I always let people merge in front of me even in cut-throat traffic.
    4. I donate to charities – both time and money/goods – quite regularly.
    5. I struggle sometimes to be supportive of my husband, but I’m trying to improve!
    6. I take steps everyday to reduce my impact on the environment.
    7. I show compassion and nonviolence with every VEGAN bite of food that I take.
    8. I stimulate the economy often, lol. 😉
    9. I’m open-minded and non-judgemental about others’ choices, even if they would not be my own.
    10. I’m pretty darn smart.

    1. I’m finally finishing my degree after taking the necessary time for myself.
    2. I am a great listener and can talk to almost anyone and find something in common by the end of the conversation.
    3. I’m a good, honest writer.
    4. I’m very organized.
    5. I’m trying to see if changes can be made in the fashion industry using women’s advice for my independent study to do better for society.
    6. I just planned and finished a walk for Body Image Awareness Week. We had about 75 people there so we raised about $750 to help others get the treatment they need.
    7. I have learned how to always stay true to myself and listen to my instincts.
    8. I can make some kick-ass chocolate chip cookies 🙂
    9. I consider myself a creative person.
    10. I’m living healthy and free!

    Thank you again for all the work you do for eating disorders and positive self-image. It means a lot to me. I LOVE this idea of positives unrelated to body image:

    5: I make/bake presents for friends and family just because.
    6: I am training for a marathon in memory of a friend. Because I can but she can’t.
    7: I fit into my skinny jeans at the weekend without really trying!
    8: I write lists – for everything – and love it!
    9: I am a good fur-mom to my rescue dog Charlie
    10 Once a month, I send a letter or card to my friend the other side of the world to let her know I think of her, and love her.

    This is awesome Caitlin! I love all you’ve done with Operation Beautiful and that it is so involved with NEDAW.

    1. When I set my mind to something, I do it.
    2. I realize that the more chances and opportunities I take are making me stronger!
    3. I am a cat person, and PROUD of it 😉
    4. I love that I get to wear glasses, it’s fun to be a nerd
    5. Early bedtimes are a guilty pleasure for me
    6. I am really smart, it’s true!
    7. I care A LOT about my friends and family
    8. I love talking to others and helping them sort through their problems rationally
    9. Part of me is excited to graduate without a “for sure plan”
    10. I love to plan, and therefore amd always on time, always prepared, and am rarely surprised with bad things
