Hi, friends!  How are you?  Well, I’m having my first painfully sleepy day.  I am not really complaining because, well, I could’ve been painfully sleepy this whole time!  But Claire is proving to be a pretty great newborn sleeper, capable of a few long stretches at night.  We’re still working to sort out some of that daytime/nighttime reversal stuff; I think it’s as resolved as it can be for her age.  I’m also doing a few things differently with Claire than I did with Henry (swaddling from the start, not being afraid to use the pacifier occasionally, not rushing to pick her up at every single peep);  maybe it’s helping, maybe it’s not.

Her sleep and eating patterns give me hope, though – it’s like I can already see the light at the end of the tunnel!

I thought I’d share some recent eats and treats.  I’ll be honest; my diet took a total nosedive during the last few months of pregnancy.  I wasn’t great about eating vegetables, and I ate a *LOT* of potato chips and chocolate and desserts (yummmm). I kept on telling myself, “You can clean up your diet when the baby is here!”  So that’s what I’m trying to do.

I’ve made it a goal to have at least one salad OR one green smoothie with protein a day.  And I’ve been making huge sheets of roasted veggies to have with lunches or dinners.  I’m eating small but frequent meals because I’m pretty much hungry round-the-clock due to breastfeeding.  I keep Larabars and bananas next to my bed for late-night snacks, and I’m trying to nosh on snacks with a good protein/fat combo during the day, like apples and cheese or almonds.  You know – basic healthy food stuff.  I keep reminding myself that the better I eat, the more energy I will have.

… But I’m still finding room for treats.  Can’t eliminate them completely and would never want to!

OMG.  WINE.  When I was about 38 weeks pregnant, I suddenly “remembered” that I WOULD BE ABLE TO DRINK WINE SOON and was so happy.  Claire’s eating and sleeping has been so regular that I can safely savor a glass in the middle of the day – it’s pretty awesome.

Henry and I also made these delicious cupcakes – I have to share the recipe with you!  These cupcakes are Gingerbread Spice with Hot Cocoa Icing.

I used the Candy Cane Lane Tea Cupcakes concept but made the cakes with Gingerbread Spice tea – a straight replacement for the Candy Cane Lane tea.  For the icing, I didn’t add any tea at all but mixed into packets of Swiss Miss hot cocoa (and a touch more water).

They were gone within the day!  I, for the record, only had two.  Hah.

I remember savoring those well-timed glasses of wine when Wyatt was a newborn. I looked forward to it ALL day 😉

Your little one is so precious!

The breastfeeding hunger is so intense! I had to have some chocolate every day (for happiness and sanity). My breastfeeding hunger didn’t simmer down until my daughter was around 6 months old. Yeah, it took me a year to lose all of the pregnancy weight, but I don’t care. My daughter is 17 months old today, and we are actually still nursing and I weigh less than I did before I got pregnant with her. Don’t forget that beer is rumored to help with milk production 😉

Keep up the good work! I’m not a mom, but as a dance coach I find that roasted veggies are the best way to get nutrients! They’re easy, heat up well, and don’t require much thinking. Keep up the good work!

She is such a beautiful little baby <3 I think a post on how Henry reacted to meeting her and how he is doing would be really fun to read 😉 Was he not surprised at all when he met his baby sister, considering that's what he expected anyways? Sibling intuition <3

I think since we had been talking about the baby for so long that he was just like “hey, okay, a baby.”

When he came into the room, I made sure someone else was holding her, which I think was a good decision. We cuddled a bit and talked and then he finally noticed the baby. I picked her up and he gave her a hug and kiss right away! It was so sweet. He petted her face a lot to. Then we gave him a gift “from” Claire (a remote control truck) and he yelled “thank you cwaire!!” Hahah. So funny.

LOL that is too cute!! Henry is adorable and so sweet. I think you definitely prepared him really well for her arrival. I can’t wait to see them become best buds as they continue to grow older together 🙂 <3

Love the mom of two shot!

  • Sarah December 10, 2014, 1:11 pm

Thank you for sharing! After my first was born, I was eating absolute crap because I was in newborn survival mode and in hindsight, I do think eating healthier would have given me more energy = duh! So perhaps I will try harder this time but still enjoy the treats in moderation too 🙂 For me pregnancy hunger had NOTHING on breastfeeding hunger, it’s insane. And I really, really can’t wait to have a glass of wine, ha ha.

Claire is adorable! Congrats. That must be so nice for her schedule to be regular, especially since you have 2 kids now.

  • Tanya December 10, 2014, 2:33 pm

    Oh wine…just a few more weeks 🙂

  • Melissa @battleofmarathonblog December 10, 2014, 2:50 pm

Love that you mention how choosing healthy options gives you energy, even when you’re not sleeping! I really need to remind my students of this…best of luck with your two munchkins 🙂

Im am so glad I am not the only one who has been eating poorly during pregnancy. I have three more months to go and trying to tame the sweet tooth, but its Christmas sooo no. Also when you are breastfeeding you are a eating machine!! I was way more hungry then when I was pregnant. PS: I was the reader who wanted to know how Henry did in the new room transition….we put my son in his new room over the weekend and he loves it!!

    • Caitlin December 10, 2014, 3:43 pm

      Yay I’m so glad 🙂

    Must. Resist. Baby. Fever.

  • Casey December 10, 2014, 6:19 pm

I don’t have a child but can we make mid-day glasses of wine a thing? I think the world would be a much happier place.

  • Danielle December 10, 2014, 7:48 pm

I want a pair of Claire’s boot socks for myself!

  • Joey December 10, 2014, 7:52 pm

You’re doing amazing, super mom! And I’m really happy you’re finding time to share it with us, too! Sending so much love to your family at this special time. <3

  • Sophie @ Sophie Speaking December 11, 2014, 2:58 am

That cupcake looks incredible – I want one right now!!!!

Claire ios such a cutie, glad to see you’re settling in to your new family life so well 🙂

  • Tricia December 11, 2014, 6:27 am

So I have to say I cannot wait to bring my new baby home looking at these pictures. What a magical time. Now… what’s your breastfeeding-so-far-success plan? I struggled and gave up with my first. You’re giving me hope. Do you think Henry and Claire are just different? Or did you do something differently? I feel way more prepared this time. Maybe that’ll help?

    • Caitlin December 11, 2014, 6:58 am

I think they are different. Claire eats longer which Henry didn’t. He would eat for like five minutes and stop. It really stressed me out and was one of the many reasons I started to pump. Also I am just not worrying about using the shield for now – I gotta get rid of of eventually but I’ll cross that bridge when it comes.

Also I’m limiting visitors to short and really infrequent visits. I had too many people in my house last time and it made me shy.

      • Tricia December 12, 2014, 6:17 am

Very smart! I limited visitors the first time but I had a marathon eater. Well… he would fall asleep, eat, fall asleep, etc. Felt like he was constantly on me. I pulled like .5 ounces after 30 min. It was crazy. I’m hoping this baby and I are a better match! I really love your attitude this time around. Not that it was bad with Henry, but you just seem so at ease. Thanks for the reply!

  • Amanda December 11, 2014, 8:00 am

I know it’s none of my business, but I just want to say that I’m so glad you’re breastfeeding. I faced latching issues at the beginning too (flat nipples), but my 19-month-old is still going strong and I’m thankful I stuck it out during those first difficult months. Such a beautiful thing! =)

    • Caitlin December 11, 2014, 8:20 am

      Thanks! I’m so pleased 🙂

  • Julie December 11, 2014, 9:38 am

That 1st pic of Claire is precious!

  • Lindsey December 13, 2014, 11:56 pm

What a beautiful baby girl. You are so blessed!

  • Cassie December 18, 2014, 9:55 am

I switched over to oatmeal for breakfast when it got cold, but have actually started craving green smoothies. Crazy!
