Kale Sludge

Some of us are crawling (almost)…

Some of us are running.  Smile

I had a lovely run this morning.  I did 4.5 miles, about 0.5 mile longer than my goal per my training plan.  This week hasn’t been so great in terms of my training… I really did emotionally re-commit last week, but the past few days have been crazy between the clinic move, my work trip, and everything in between. I’m starting to realize that whenever my week is even slightly weird, it’s gonna throw my workouts for a loop.  That’s okay – as long as I still do it when I can.

Not only did I quite a bit farther than required, I also pushed it really hard.  Wahoo for speed!

Came home and made a light by tasty lunch.  My appetite was crushed by my workout – does that ever happen to you?  I’m sure it will kick back in soon – oh, in approximately an hour or so.

My brother-in-law recently showed me how to make ‘juice’ with my Vitamix blender (which, by the way, is expensive as crap but tooooooootally worth it).  The Vitamix is so powerful that it just eats up everything I drop in, essentially creating juice when you add a little water.

In the blender (this made two drinks):

Loads and loads of raw kale

A whole apple

Juice of half a lemon

Two cups of water

Six drops of Stevia

It’s frothy at the top but pretty tasty.  Like drinking a salad!

How was your training this weekend?  Meh?  Awesome?

I’m looking forward to kickin’ butt over the weekend and doing a really long run.  Gotta get back in the saddle.

Do you just constantly look at Henry and his ridiculously cute facial expressions and think how freaking cute he is? Every picture. Seriously, every picture is adorbs.

  • LP November 16, 2012, 2:15 pm

I am convinced that I NEED a vitamix of my own! Any suggestions on which model, refurbished vs new, where to buy (direct vs amazon), etc?

  • Nicole@ livingthesweetlifestl.wordpress.com November 16, 2012, 2:20 pm

After a hard workout I am rarely hungry so I have to force myself to eat something small…but then a few hours later I am starving.

  • Melissa November 16, 2012, 2:23 pm

That last picture of Henry looks exactly like you! Love my Vitamix too!

  • Katie November 16, 2012, 2:26 pm

I can’t believe Henry is THATCLOSE to crawling! My baby is a few weeks older, and he’s not on all fours yet……I know I’m not supposed to compare babies, but I hope he’s not behind! Although I did have a friend who’s baby wasnt’ crawling yet at 8 months, then all of a sudden starting crawling every where. I’m so excited for the crawling! 🙂

    • Caitlin November 16, 2012, 3:37 pm

I think all bebes are just different 🙂 Maybe yours will skip crawling and go right to walking! (Ahh)

  • Katie November 16, 2012, 2:44 pm

Working out always makes me less hungry for awhile. There are lots of studies that show that to be true.

  • Leslie November 16, 2012, 2:48 pm

Henry is just simply a beautiful little boy. His blue eyes are awesome.

  • Elise @ Expeditions of Elise November 16, 2012, 2:49 pm

Did you throw the entire lemon in there, peel and all? Did that make it taste bitter at all?

  • Ali November 16, 2012, 2:50 pm

My training was…meh. I was sick and worked way too much this week so I missed 3-4 days and the other days were really lackluster. I have a 5-mile race (the first race that I plan to run – I’ve always walked) on Thanksgiving so I’m a little worried I am behind in training as I still have body aches from the flu and can’t push too hard right now. We’ll see! On another note – I asked for $$ towards a Vitamix for Christmas this year! I nearly burnt out the motor on my regular and personal blenders this year and get frustrated when I try to make things like homemade pureed pumpkin and it takes 2 hours to puree it. It’s actually really sad how excited I am.

  • M.C. November 16, 2012, 3:13 pm

That look on H’s face… in both of those pics…. I can’t concentrate on anything else… lol 🙂

  • Samantha November 16, 2012, 3:16 pm

OMG those photos of Henry are ADORABLE. I’m in love with the last one.

And I really want a Vitamix!

  • Sarah @ Yogi in Action November 16, 2012, 3:44 pm

I want a Vitamix so badly! But it’s so low on the list compared to other things that I want that I doubt I’ll ever make the investment for one.

Though I already have a blender, a juicer and a processor, so would the Vitamix do anything that they already couldn’t?

    • Caitlin November 16, 2012, 3:48 pm

      Naw 🙂

  • AshinMT November 16, 2012, 3:47 pm

I rarely commet but read religiously- just had to say how seriously cute Henry is. I mean seriously, he is precious!

    • Caitlin November 16, 2012, 3:47 pm

      Thanks 🙂

  • Lea @ Greens and Coffee Beans November 16, 2012, 4:22 pm

That last picture of Henry is too funny! I love his expression!
And is it bad that I think kale sludge sounds delicious?

  • L November 16, 2012, 5:24 pm

I’m training for my second half marathon and today, I was forced to run on a treadmill. I thought I’d hate it and just do an easy 8 miles but I ended up running a whole half AND blasting my 13.1 PR by 21 minutes!!! Just goes to show how training smart and eating well helps – and I know you experienced that between your two marathons.

  • Kendra @ My Full-Thyme Life November 16, 2012, 5:26 pm

That last pic of Henry kills me!! Way to go on your run and I’m sure you’ll kick butt this weekend!

  • Julianna @ Julianna Bananna November 16, 2012, 6:19 pm

reason #5000 why i want a vitamix SO bad! that ‘juice’ looks so good.

  • Jen November 16, 2012, 6:33 pm

Haha, Henry’s face in that last pic is epic!

  • Susan November 16, 2012, 6:43 pm

Your eggs always look so perfect! And what is that (I assume) non-dairy spread on your toast? I want it.

    • Caitlin November 16, 2012, 6:54 pm

      Earth Balance!

  • Sam November 16, 2012, 6:49 pm

My training seems to have reached a bit of a standstill lately. I’m stuck on two miles and don’t seem to be getting much faster or getting any motivation to go further!

  • Abby November 16, 2012, 7:13 pm

Exercise has been worse than meh this week. Baby has a tummy bug so nights have been filled with puking instead of sleeping and days have been filled with laundering everything that was puked on. Hoping next week isa million times better for both of us!

  • Katie @ Talk Less, Say More November 16, 2012, 7:54 pm

Henry’s face is totally “look ma!!” So cute!
I so desperately want a Vitamix but it’s going to have to wait until there’s money for more than a car payment…ha! 😉

  • Kris November 16, 2012, 9:02 pm

Henry is so gorg, and I can see you in his face 🙂 My training rocked this week — yay!

  • Calla November 16, 2012, 9:59 pm

James looks like a proud father in that last pic, like he’s the one who taught Henry to crawl. So cute (both of them)!

  • Sana November 16, 2012, 11:13 pm

Gahh you and the husband made the cutest baby ever!!!

  • Gina @ Health, Love, and Chocolate November 17, 2012, 1:20 am

I am definitely a fan of kale sludge-like smoothies but wish I had a Vitamix to make them that much better!

  • Shari November 17, 2012, 8:16 am

That last picture of Henry is adorable! 🙂

  • Vicki November 17, 2012, 3:28 pm

Your pics just reinforce the fact that I need a better camera before my baby gets too big – you take terrific pictures! Any tips/recommendations

    • Caitlin November 17, 2012, 3:38 pm

So many of my pictures are iphone pics 🙂 I really like my SD90 point and shoot though. My biggest tip would be to take lots of peoples when you’re trying to catch something cute. I just left my finger on the trigger and took about 20 photos of him in that position to get two good ones.

  • Macey Snelson November 17, 2012, 8:12 pm

Your little guy is so cute! It’s fun to be able to watch him grow up on your blog and cheer on his milestones 🙂

  • Melissa November 18, 2012, 3:37 am

We have a vitamix too. To cut the frothyness, I think it helps to turn the speed down slowly when it’s all blended and keep it on the lowest speed for a few seconds, it kind of eats up all the bubbly top! Good luck! Also check out YouTube videos of people using their vitamixs for good ideas. I think there’s a “vitamix lady” doing demos in SAMs or Costco, she has some good tips and recipes. Like how to hide veges in things, like ice cream. Might be helpful down the road with Henry.

    • Caitlin November 18, 2012, 10:21 am

      awesome tip, thanks melissa!

  • Allison November 18, 2012, 4:23 pm

Thanks for sharing these pics of your sweet little boy! Totally put a smile on my face….Henry is just so adorable!! 🙂 And congrats on the great training run 🙂

  • Rosa November 19, 2012, 6:04 am

    love those pics of H.

  • Katie November 19, 2012, 10:33 am

I’ve heard the viatamix is so much better to use to make juice because it doesn’t discard the pulp which has so many nutrients. It just pulverizes it! Smart thinking, brother in law!
