Anticipation

in All Posts

Happy Labor Day!  A day off from work, a day to shop, and the symbolic end of summer.  Summer is my favorite season, but I must admit that I’m looking forward to fall.

Until then… PEACHES.

Lots and lots of peaches.

We have a rough baby night last night, so I treated both the Husband and myself to a special breakfast.  If there’s one thing that makes you feel more human after a sleepless night, it’s a decadent breakfast {and a giant vat of coffee to swim in}.

French toast

Syrup!

Almonds

Coconut

Peaches

For my fellow gluten-free folk:  I usually have Udi’s bread but tried this Glutino loaf – so good.  Dare I say it’s better than Udi’s?

Yum.

Here’s how I spent Labor Day morning – playing!  It’s so fascinating to me to watch Henry’s cognitive and motor skills develop.  After weeks of just being a cute little baby lump, the milestones are coming as fast as lightening.  This video documents his new ability to anticipate play (when I say “three,” I grab the bottom of the jumper and swing him back and forth).

Have a great day!

    That breakfast looks fantastic!

  • Helen September 3, 2012, 11:04 am

In the screen grab – before you hit play, he looks just like you!

    • Caitlin September 3, 2012, 11:05 am

      haha finally for once!

      • Elle September 3, 2012, 11:18 am

I agree he looks like you so much! By the way, his smile at 0:25 is heart-melting!! Adorable!!

  • kate September 3, 2012, 11:13 am

I could be wrong, but I thought babies didn’t really start developing “anticipation” until around 6 + months? I thought around the 3month mark the majority of the reaction is due to the desire to reciprocate smiles, hearing voices, eye contact and seeing familiar faces. However correct me if I am wrong!

Not trying to take the wind out of your sails, I just think maybe you might be misinterpreting the reason for his smiles, however perhaps you are right, Henry could just be really advanced!

    • Caitlin September 3, 2012, 11:16 am

LOL I don’t know – but it does seem like his anticipating it, right? Or maybe he’s just learning cues? Whatever it is, it’s fun.

      • kate September 3, 2012, 11:29 am

I think if you listen to your voice when watching the video, you will notice that the pitch of your voice becomes higher and more exaggerated (baby-talk!), I am also willing to bet that while engaging in this “baby-talk” your smile is wider. I think perhaps the reaction has more to do with your tone of voice and facial expression, rather than Henry truly being able anticipate the wiggling of his jumper. For an experiment try using the same tone of voice and facial expression while Henry is doing something else and see if his reaction varies or if it is the same.

Either reason, it is cute and it is so much fun to see such a handsome little guy smile!!! & no matter what the reason he is learning valuable communication skills when you interact with him in such a way!

        • Caitlin September 3, 2012, 11:32 am

just tried it again with a straight face and no high pitched sounds and he still did it! i also had the hubby do it and it worked. so funny. now he is in his jumper completely zoned because i have been making him jump around and laugh for an hour straight.

          • Caitlin September 3, 2012, 11:33 am

AKA i should play this game right before bed. LOL

          • kate September 3, 2012, 11:49 am

Babies will still smile simply at eye contact 🙂

But ya know what? Doesn’t matter why he is doing it, you have every right to be proud of him!

You two are so cute! I love watching new moms with their babies – everything is so new and exciting for both of them!

          • Caitlin September 3, 2012, 12:19 pm

haha i dont think he’s gifted (well, not ruling it out…), i just think he’s BIG TOTAL CHEESEBALL. 🙂

    • laine September 3, 2012, 11:30 am

Did you watch the video? That looks like anticipation to me! Milestones aren’t fixed dates any more than “due dates” are fixed dates. Either way, his little smile when you say “one….” is so cute!!

      • kate September 3, 2012, 12:16 pm

Haha yes, I watched the video! & I agree it *looks* like anticipation, & it might be, but just because it *looks* like it to us, doesn’t mean it is — or isn’t.

Milestones are not fixed, nor should they be, every child develops at their own rate. However just like with due dates, there are averages which are important to keep in mind. If Henry really is that advanced, which he very well could be, it is important to keep track of. I also think it is important to correctly identify milestones in order to better know where your child stands.

I hope no one misinterprets my comments as trying to be negative, because it was not meant to insult Henry or Caitlin! In fact if Henry is actually displaying signs of being gifted, it is wonderful that Caitlin is taking notice! 😀

        • Amy September 3, 2012, 12:46 pm

Is this a joke? She’s simply showing us an adorable video of her adorable son having a great time. Who cares if it’s anticipation, eye contact, or just gas?!?

          • kate September 3, 2012, 2:26 pm

Oh gee you caught me! It was just a joke! haha 😉

Okay, so when did the I discussion of developmental milestones become socially unacceptable? I am actually pointing out that the child could possibly be gifted if he really is displaying such a thing so early, and then suggesting to test him by doing different things and studying reactions….but somehow people interpret this as criticism?

😀 Lighten up people, I agree, it doesn’t matter if it is anticipation, eye contact or just gas — but why on earth are you getting so defensive when someone brings it up as a topic of conversation, especially when Caitlin didn’t seem at all offended by the topic?

  • Lee September 3, 2012, 11:17 am

Fun to see a video of Henry! I think he looks like you, just with reddish hair.

Do you find that drinking coffee while breast feeding affects Henry? My mom said it made us super hyper. Just a 22 week along mon to be wondering 🙂

    • Caitlin September 4, 2012, 7:31 am

I don’t… I know lots of other women say it does but I don’t think it does for Henry.
