A mystery I would love to solve:  Why do you wake up with the most random songs stuck in your head?  How does that work physically? I picture my neurons sauntering up to my brain jukebox and hitting ‘random play.’  There’s probably a more scientific explanation for it…

A mystery that I did solve this morning:  how to get out of my breakfast rut.

The solution – something SAVORY.

IMG_7923

I made a breakfast salad of sorts with arugula, cottage cheese, two hardboiled eggs, and tomatoes.  Fun factoid: a hardboiled egg gets a green ring around the yolk when you overcook it.  Hydrogen and sulfur in the egg white reacts, forming a hydrogen sulfide gas that then reacts with iron in the yolk.  It’s not pretty but perfectly safe to eat.

FAQ Mondays

What’s your favorite warm weather running accessory?  Here’s a whole post on how to Run in Hot Weather.  As a native Floridian, I consider myself a semi-expert (there was that time that I went for a run in the middle of the day in August in Orlando…. hence the semi-expert status).  Of all the tips and gear that make warm weather running more enjoyable, my absolute favorite thing is my CamelBak, which is a hydration backpack.  I have a slim profile ‘ladies fit’ CamelBak that holds about 1.5 liters of water.  It doesn’t move around as much as you would think it would, but it is most comfortable if you’re wearing a tank top or shirt with sleeves – not spaghetti straps.  I’m a pretty salty sweat-er so I need something in between the straps of the CamelBak and my bare skin or I chafe.  Happy hydrating!

Please reveal BabyHTP’s potential names!  I’m not keeping BabyHTP’s potential names a secret-secret, but I do prefer to be quiet about baby names.  The worst thing is when you tell a friend or relative, “We are going to name the baby XXX!” and the person says, “EW! I knew a really stupid girl in high school named XXX.”  Hah.  Thanks. So I’m going to refrain on spilling our boy and girl first name options, but I will tell you the middle name options!  If BabyHTP is a girl, her middle name will be Joy, which is my middle name and my mother’s name.  I also have the word JOY tattooed on my hip.  If BabyHTP is a boy, his middle name will be Kristien, after the Husband.

What’s your favorite workout DVD?  Way back in the early days of this blog, I did a 30 Day Shred Challenge.   I really love Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred DVD.  It’s super hard for an at-home workout, and I had great results. Some of the more plyometric-based moves irritated my knees, but I just modified those moves.  I love how the workout is fast (under 30 minutes, if I remember correctly).  That’s about as long as I will last with an at-home DVD.

Your turn!  What’s your #1 warm weather running accessory?  Favorite names?  And best workout DVD?

I LOVE the Jillian Michaels Boost Metabolism video. It is so hardcore, and I feel like I’m really getting a great workout when I use it!

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat March 19, 2012, 10:26 am

I love the name Joy! Great picks! For me, my #1 warm weather running accessory (although I’m not sure they’re actually accessories): Lululemon Cool Racerback tanks. I love them because there are no rough seams (no chafing – yay!) and they don’t show sweat very much. They’re also long enough for my extralong torso, and breathe really well.
Fave Names: Haven’t given it much thought, but I really like Jamie for a boy or a girl.
Fave workout DVD – I haven’t actually done many! I’d love to try the Shred though!

  • Emily March 19, 2012, 10:30 am

I need to get a camelback or one of those water bottle belts. I always thought they looked weird, till I ran a half yesterday (first one, woo woo!) and would have loved to have access to water without getting in the middle of crowds at water stops!

  • Gina @ Running to the Kitchen March 19, 2012, 10:32 am

Totally agree about the camelbak, anything over 75 and I wear that thing in a heartbeat. It’s crazy that I can drink the entire thing in about 8 miles on a hot day!

  • Michele Albert March 19, 2012, 10:36 am

Caitlin – if you add a splash of vinegar to your cooking water it helps eliminate the green ring in hard boiled eggs!

  • Melissa R March 19, 2012, 10:37 am

I’m loving and currently doing Jackie Warner’s Power Circuit DVD.

  • Rebecca March 19, 2012, 10:45 am

Today was supposed to be Day 1 of the 30 Day shred, but I decided to sleep in instead. Your review inspired me to do it tonight after work!! THANK YOU!!!

  • Ashley March 19, 2012, 10:49 am

I second the 30 Day Shred. I love that DVD. I also have two other Jillian Michael’s DVDs that I use often called Burn Fat, Boost Metabolism which is a cardio based circuit workout and the other called No More Trouble Zones which is a strength training circuit workout. Usually I find workout DVDs to be too easy, but these are tough!

  • Allison K March 19, 2012, 10:50 am

We did not keep the sex of our baby a secret…and didn’t intend on keeping the name secret, but at 33 weeks…we still don’t have a name picked out. I have found though that I don’t want to tell people the names we have on our short list. I can’t put my finger on why, it just feels private and special right now.

  • Alex @ Raw Recovery March 19, 2012, 10:53 am

Victoria is my favorite girl name but because I’m a first generation American (my mom is Romanian), I would want some part of my future daughter’s name to reflect our heritage. My favorite boy name is Phinnaeus (or Fin for short) after the character in A Separate Peace (I stole it from my sister but she didn’t want the name anymore). We’re both too young for kids anyway. I think it’s wise not to reveal your names just yet. I know when my cousin’s wife had a baby, they told us the baby girl’s name before she was born and in Romania it’s considered a “peasant” name so my whole family was really upset about it because they wanted us to call her Lina and not Maddie (her name is Madelina, which in Romanian is pronounced Muh-duh-lina). I’ll stop rambling now.

    • Alex @ Raw Recovery March 19, 2012, 10:54 am

Oh and I should say that I do not mean to offend anyone with the name Madelina. I think it’s a beautiful name but I’m just relaying what my Romanian side of the family thought of it so those opinions are not mine. Just to clarify.

    • Sonia the Mexigarian March 19, 2012, 11:44 am

Victoria is my little sisters name 🙂 I completely agree about the name reflecting some form of one’s heritage. For me, it feels like it would keep me more in touch with my roots.

  • Katie @ cooklaughmove March 19, 2012, 10:56 am

#1 warm weather accessory is gatorade! I’m a super salty sweater and I need a little something more than water!

And my favorite workout DVD is the Shred too! I don’t do the DVD very frequently anymore, but I have incorporated most of the moves into my lifting!

  • Shannon March 19, 2012, 10:56 am

It’s funny you’d write this today, b/c I just re-started using Jillian’s DVDs after a 6-wk hiatus from strength training. (OK, maybe 7.) I am just starting Killer Buns and Thighs, which…omg hard. But I dislike that then I don’t work my arms and abs. The Shred is great, too, but I srsly cannot even do No More Trouble Zones. I find it SO hard. And I’m fairly in shape! (I like to think anyway!)

  • Ann March 19, 2012, 10:57 am

I’m actually starting level 2 of 30 day shred today (again) so I’d say any Jillian DVD really.

  • Katie @ Peace Love & Oats March 19, 2012, 11:08 am

I got a camelbak a few weeks ago because they haven’t turned on the water fountains where I run yet, and I love it! Not only does it hold water but I can carry other things in there too! And I love Joy as a middle name, I’m a big fan of using family names and names that mean something.

  • Rebecca March 19, 2012, 11:18 am

Numbers one and three don’t apply to me because I don’t run or do workout stuff (except walking), but number two I can answer, sort of.
If I ever have kids, I’m seriously considering naming my daughter (if I have a girl) after my best friend (as the first name) and possibly my sister’s nickname as the middle name. Not sure yet. Might name a boy after my grandfather (on my dad’s side) and my dad, but I don’t know. It would depend on my husband’s opinion, as well. 🙂
One of my friends has the same middle name as her mom, and I think that’s kind of cool. Another friend’s middle name is the feminine form of her grandfather’s name, which is also neat. Mine was just something my parents thought fit with my first name; no real reason for it.

  • Joy March 19, 2012, 11:30 am

My favorite warm weather running accessory is good socks.
I love the name joy (I’m biased)
And my favorite work at home video is these cheesy 8 minute abs 8 minute arms 8 minute buns 8 minute thighs (had them on VHS) now I watch them on YouTube

  • Sonia the Mexigarian March 19, 2012, 11:39 am

I dunno how to run in the heat yet. I typically avoid overworking my body in the heat since I am prone to heat sickness and fainting. This summer should be a fun experiment as I will have new running routes in the hills. In any case, I soooo need a Cambelbak for hiking. I used my sisters old one on our hike on Upper Yosemite Falls. It was very much needed.

My older sis is named after my Hungarian grandmother Maria (accent over first A) and my Mexican grandmother, Carmela.

No kids yet but I do have plans to name any future children in honor of some dearly departed relatives, with a middle name honoring a grandparent.

I am not a big fan of the whole Junior or So and so the II thing. I did like the name Isabella until the whole Twilight thing. ugh.

I really should do a 30 day shred challenge too 🙂

  • kwithme March 19, 2012, 11:46 am

We are done naming kids. It is funny because my absolute favorite names did not end up as our girls names, basically because we did not agree or like how they sounded with our last name.

Girls: Sasha (my cat), Bridget, Rachael, Alexandra
Boys: Max (both of our first choice but no boys), Graham, Cade (husband hated the last two),
    Alexander

“x” does not sound good with our last name. We did use Alexandra as our second daughter’s middle name because we were not planning any more children so no point in saving it.

  • Danielle @ Two Love Birds March 19, 2012, 11:57 am

Love the p90x videos and insanity. They definitely work!

  • Rachel March 19, 2012, 12:00 pm

i know what you mean on the whole name thing. when i was pregnant w/ my daughter, i was working in retail. naturally i got lots of questions, mostly about the name. we named our daughter Penelope, after my mother who had died recently. people would give me a weird look when i told them, but i just followed it up w/ “it was my dead mother’s name” & they shut right up! i also had some weird responses to our son’s name; Tyson. i think it’s a pretty normal name, but i kept having people ask me if i was boxing fan. i was so confused by this! then i realized they were talking about Mike Tyson. to me that makes NO sense, but whatever…

  • Tanya March 19, 2012, 12:01 pm

I love names that also have meanings. Joy is a beautiful name.
(My youngest son’s middle name is Dauntless.)

  • Caitlin March 19, 2012, 12:03 pm

Hi- I have been following your blog for quite some time, and I always liked that we share a name…but today, I realized that we also have the same middle name. Bizarre!!!

    • CaitlinHTP March 19, 2012, 12:06 pm

OMG. Really? that is too weird for words.

      • Caitlin March 19, 2012, 12:20 pm

I know! I was freaked out and immediately had to text my BF 🙂

  • Corrie Anne March 19, 2012, 12:06 pm

Favorite warm running accessory is — less clothes!! haha. I love Turbo Fire! And anything Jill!!!

  • Amanda @ AmandaRunsNY March 19, 2012, 12:22 pm

Number one warm weather running accessory is sunglasses. I cannot run without them. The squinting just really gets to me and causes a massive headache.

  • Helene@healthyfrenchie March 19, 2012, 12:23 pm

I love the name Joy, it’s “on the list” if I ever have a baby girl 🙂 And I love that a boy would get his daddy’s name as a middle name..
And you’re right, nothing worse that people criticizing such a personal and important choice..
My favorite hot weather running accessory is my pink baseball cap!

  • Krista (kristastes) March 19, 2012, 12:27 pm

My middle name is Joy, too 🙂 love that name as first or middle!

  • Crystal March 19, 2012, 12:30 pm

How do you make breakfast every day? I’m 17 weeks pregnant and I’m lucky if I can get the kids milk and cereal before I pass out on the couch with a mug of coffee. DH is less than pleased I’m not eating what he calls “a Brewer breakfast”. In an ideal world all of us would get a few veggies with veggies, but man morning comes early.

    • CaitlinHTP March 19, 2012, 12:45 pm

Haha, that is does. I probably have it easier than you, as I’m only feeding dogs in the morning 🙂 I would just recommend planning ahead a little bit – you could hardboil and peel the eggs the night before, or you could make a protein smoothie the night before and stick it in the fridge. Or…. tell your husband to make you breakfast or make the kids breakfast if he’s so concerned about you eating right. 🙂 I vote for that option. 🙂

      • Crystal March 19, 2012, 2:03 pm

I am all about the hubs making me breakfast. I need to guilt him into it. But don’t you want the baby to grow, the baby needs you to make me eggs every morning.

  • Claire @ Live and Love to Eat March 19, 2012, 1:21 pm

I love all of Jillian’s at home DVDs – but starting with the 30 day Shred makes the 45 minute ones seem so long!

  • Brie March 19, 2012, 1:43 pm

Um, our baby is not going to have a name. Because we currently have a shared Google spreadsheet that has 30+ names for each sex on it, and we are the most indecisive people in the universe.
Soooo odds are good that our baby’s name will be a “secret” until it’s born to us, too, because we will not have decided on anything. If it’s a girl, I think we’ll be able to agree, but if it’s a boy…forget it.

    • Allison K March 19, 2012, 3:37 pm

We are in this EXACT same place. When we found out we were having a baby, we had a girls name picked out and agreed upon in like 2 weeks. Of course, we are having a boy and have NO idea what to name him.

  • Linz @ Itz Linz March 19, 2012, 1:45 pm

my grandma and my sister’s middle names are both joy! great name! 🙂

  • Christine @ BookishlyB March 19, 2012, 2:02 pm

I’m so torn on the whole revealing the name thing! When the time comes I don’t want anyone to name their kid my kid’s name, and then accuse me of stealing it (I’ve heard horror stories!). But, on the other hand, I think it’s a fun secret to keep.

  • Amber K March 19, 2012, 2:25 pm

I have had my future kids’ names picked out since before I met my husband. lol. So pretty much everyone in my family already knows them. They are family names and they mean a lot to me. I did make sure that Aubrey actually likes them too, but that was definitely the easiest part of it for us.

But now I wonder if I would have kept them a secret if I was pregnant and people didn’t already know!

  • kathleen @ the daily crumb March 19, 2012, 2:27 pm

i would never think to make a salad for breakfast! why not, though?! veggies + protein — looks delicious.

  • C March 19, 2012, 2:38 pm

Eggs: The solution to that green ring? Remove from a hot pan and dunk straight into ice cold water!

  • Diana @ frontyardfoodie March 19, 2012, 2:45 pm

I LOVED the 30 Day Shred. Totally worked on me. I also like Insanity which was just that, insane.

We are not big on keeping names secret but not because we want everyone to know, but we like calling our baby by name. Though our situation is different since we love finding out the gender haha.

  • ErikaMC March 19, 2012, 2:54 pm

We kept our girl/boy name options secret. The few people we did tell wrinkled their noses (and they were family!) so from then on we didn’t tell anybody. Nobody has wrinkled their nose since he was born.

I am a at-home dvd junkie. There are soooo many I love. Currently my favorite is Jackie Warner 30 Day Fast Results. Holy soreness!

  • Jolene (Homespun Heritage) March 19, 2012, 2:58 pm

LOVE talking about names! We have 4 going on 7 children so this comes up often! Here’s our current children’s names (and soon-to-children at the end).

Allyson Kayla (named after the Great Great Grandma)
    Jakob Kenneth
    Kaden Michael
    Evelyn Kendra Ruth
Dalton Kai-Wu (keeping his Chinese name)
Analina Suki (keeping her Chinese name)
and #7 I can share my idea’s here since I don’t know ya’ll! A boy it will be Donovan Kwade and for a girl we’re not sure but I’m pulling for Aviana.

If you notice we have a slight thing for K names. It started by complete accident with the first three and we didn’t want the others to feel left out so we try to include a K somewhere in their names.

  • Amanda March 19, 2012, 3:14 pm

*groan* Me+hot weather running= not friends. I ran in the Bahamas a few weeks ago, I didn’t get very far, lol! I am fond of my handheld water bottle though.

I love Nathan for boys. Girls? Idk.

My best workout dvd is also 30 day shred. Its short, tough and effective. My kinda home workout as I get bored easily.

  • Laura @ She Eats Well March 19, 2012, 3:27 pm

Warm weather running…it doesn’t get THAT warm in SF. I suppose just my running shorts. Being able to wear shorts instead of leggings is a luxury! It’s the little things!

Favorite name: boy = ethan or james and girl = ella or ava

I’ve never really done a workout dvd!

  • Rebecca March 19, 2012, 3:30 pm

I love how both of those middle names have such meaning! My middle name is after my great grandma and I think it’s so cool!

  • Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon March 19, 2012, 3:31 pm

My favorite warm weather running accessory is a lack of accessories! I wear and carry as little as humanly possible! I live at the beach in the summer and on really hot days, I like to run along the promenade which as two sets of showers for folks coming off the beach…and overheating runners!

I’ve always dreamed of having a baby girl and naming her Chloe 🙂

  • Taylor @ Nuts for Apples March 19, 2012, 3:58 pm

Thanks for reposting your running in hot weather tips! I’m getting ready to move to Texas (from Ohio) and am getting really nervous for the 100 + degree summer days…It’s been in the 70s in Ohio and my runs have already been feeling harder! Thinking about the TX heat scares me but I think I will have to invest in a camel back!

  • Sara March 19, 2012, 4:02 pm

I pre-ordered both of your books today! Hope that makes you smile!

    • CaitlinHTP March 20, 2012, 5:51 pm

      It does! thank you sara!

  • Jen March 19, 2012, 4:25 pm

My favorite warm weather running accessory is reflective tape and white t-shirts because I’ll wait until dusk haha. I am a New Englander all the way, I hate the heat!

I can only come up with good pet names, like a chinchilla named Tortoro or a poodle named Mugatu.

I like the names Madeline, Jane, and Daniel.

  • Jess C March 19, 2012, 4:29 pm

Lately I am so busy (full time work, part time Masters degree) that in the down time I do have I have been too tired to exercise. The catch is, I’m going to Europe in June/July and I need to be fit! I have the 30 Day Shred at home so I might give that another go, even if I don’t do it every single day.

  • Angela March 19, 2012, 4:43 pm

Songs that get stuck in your head are called earworms (yuck!)

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2006/jun/22/popandrock

  • jenna March 19, 2012, 4:57 pm

I woke up with the theme song to Growing Pains stuck in my head…my coworkers didn’t necessarily appreciate my sharing that when I got in 😉

    • Dominique March 20, 2012, 12:13 am

I’ve had the Growing Pains theme song stuck in my head on and off for the past few weeks. My fiance doesn’t share in the joy of that song either–mainly because he never watched that show as a kid. What a shame!

  • Sarah March 19, 2012, 5:30 pm

I love the Shred, too! I got a little bored of it, though (I don’t have a gym membership but am currently obsessed with feeling strong), so I bought a few of Bob Harper’s Inside Out Method dvd’s when they were on sale for $5 each. I love those, too!

  • Emily March 19, 2012, 6:30 pm

For girls like the names: Lily – after Lily Potter, Ella – just because – and Jodi after my all-time favourite author Jodi Picoult.
For boys: Lucas, Tyler, Mason, Hamish and Andy. The last 2 are awesome comedians from AUS.
    Happy choosing!

  • Brittnie (A Joy Renewed) March 19, 2012, 10:39 pm

    Great middle name pics. 🙂

We decided to tell the name of our little girl. Clara for first name and Anne for middle name. Clara b/c we just have always loved old fashioned names & agreed on this one and Anne b/c it is my grandmothers first name, my biological mothers middle name (she died when I was 7) and also my middle name. It was an easy pick to pass down.

    • CaitlinHTP March 20, 2012, 5:45 pm

      Clara is a beautiful name!

  • TiffanyS March 19, 2012, 10:42 pm

I discovered that a Camelbak was a necessary item last year for biking and during my training for my first half marathon. Oh, and let’s not forget some body glide.

My favorite workout at home on a dvd is Zumba.

Favorite names are my son’s Kelvin and Colton. But, my list to choose from was very, very, long. For boys I do like Henry, Dane, Casey, Charlie, and Kendall. For girls my top choices were Aurora, Vivienne, and Katherine. I never picked my kids names until I met them, and the genders were both a surprise. Enjoy the journey!

  • Vikki March 20, 2012, 9:25 am

My favorite name sites (I write fiction so this isn’t as odd as it sounds) are nameberry.com and behindthename.com Nameberry has lists and a blog.

  • Maran March 20, 2012, 9:37 am

Love 30 day Shred! I have a love for all weird names as my name is Maran and my sister is Kalyn. “Normal” names just don’t cut it. I married a man whose family tradition is that the first born son is named after the father. I guess we will have a Joe Jr in the house. That just means he will have a sister with a kick ass name.

  • Calee (@chimes) March 20, 2012, 11:00 am

I’m with you on the Shred. I’ve got all of Jillian’s DVDs and a bunch of Bob’s. Though I think Bob’s 60 min inside out cardio is the BEST workout of them all, I still like the 30 Day Shred because I know I can get in a good workout in a pinch.

  • Michelle M March 20, 2012, 12:07 pm

My favorite names are all use on my kiddos. Our boy is Christian. And our twin girls are Hannah and Grace. We didn’t have a name picked for Christian until a week before he was born, but on the girls, we chose the names pretty quick after we found out we were having two and started calling them by their name right away. We knew right away that Hannah was Baby A, on the bottom, she was mellow, didn’t kick a whole lot and seemed pretty easy going. Grace was Baby B, on top and she was a spitfire! Kicking all the time, pushing on my stomach nonstop. And everytime we went for an ultrasound, she was sitting on her sister’s head. We looked at the name meanings some time after we’d decided on them and it turned out that Hannah means Grace in Hebrew. So, we thought that was pretty awesome.

  • Life's a Bowl March 20, 2012, 1:30 pm

I got the word “faith” tattooed onto my butt cheek [wanted it to be covered when I’m in a bikini] and think it’s a great reminder… I’ve always wanted to name my little girl Faith [first or middle name] but now my fiance jokes that it’s on my butt!
