Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit

in All Posts

Did you remember to say Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit today?  I did – but only because I was up at 3 AM and staring at the ceiling.  HAPPY DECEMBER!

IMG_4814

My little Rabbit, rockin’ her new winter jacket.   Look – I’m not the kind of person that normally dresses her dogs up in clothing, but Maggie is low to the ground (2 inches!) and has very thin fur, so she freezes in the cold months.  She hates snow with the passion of a thousand honey badgers.  And she LOVES jackets.

IMG_4810

Honey badger face.

Breakfast fail.

IMG_4823

I’m not feeling very good – I’m stuffed up and feel weak – so I tried to incorporate some Vitamin C into my smoothie, but the flavors were off.  Too much soy milk, perhaps?

IMG_4825

In the blender:

1 banana

1 peeled orange

2 scoops non-dairy protein powder

1.5 cup soy milk

5 ice cubes

Time to get this day rollin’!  Come back later for a fun giveaway.  I’ll give ya a hint – it relates to this very popular post!

My dad taught me to say ‘rabbit’ first thing in the morning on the first of each month when I was little and I’m proud to say I remembered today! We only say it once though and don’t repeat it. It was fun reading the Wiki article on it since it says that it’s a common tradition in the New England area and that’s where I’m from!

  • Aubrey S December 1, 2011, 9:05 am

Hope you’re feeling better soon. Love the thought of the day.

  • Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed December 1, 2011, 9:09 am

I’d never heard of that until just now! Loooove the pics of James in his coat, he’s SO cute. Our doggie has short hair and sometimes she shivers in the cold! Hope you feel better.

  • Hillary December 1, 2011, 9:10 am

I’ve never heard of this Rabbit thing before. And I’m from Rhode Island! We do all sorts of weird things like this!

  • Rachel December 1, 2011, 9:10 am

Can you do a giveaway where Maggie would go stay at the winner’s house for a week? That’d be great…

    • Caitlin December 1, 2011, 9:11 am

@Rachel: Only if you could stand the peeing and barking!!! LOL

  • HRCK @ http://hrcktheherald.wordpress.com December 1, 2011, 9:13 am

Holy cow, what a cute little coat! She looks like she’d fit right in on Santa’s sleigh. And that fur lined hood is so on trend!

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat December 1, 2011, 9:13 am

Ahh I totally forgot to say rabbit this morning! Actually, when I was at school abroad, one of my teachers from the UK said you were supposed to say “white rabbits” not rabbit rabbit rabbit. LOL – either way, I forgot to do both. Next month!

  • Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife December 1, 2011, 9:14 am

    CUTE coat!!! That is awesomesauce.

  • Laurie December 1, 2011, 9:18 am

  • Marijke December 1, 2011, 9:27 am

You’re going to give away those Diva Cups, aren’t you!

  • Morgan @ Life After Bagels December 1, 2011, 9:29 am

in theory that smoothie combination seems like it would work in theory! now I’m staring at my uneaten orange from breakfast but I ran out of soy milk this morning so I will not attempt it

  • HTPDad December 1, 2011, 9:33 am

there is no milk in soy! Grrrrr!!!!

  • claire December 1, 2011, 9:48 am

Ahh that little dog jacket is so cute! Where did you get it? Please say online and not at a neighborhood pet store…

    • Caitlin December 1, 2011, 5:00 pm

@claire: from petsmart! there’s a link in the post!

  • Kirsty December 1, 2011, 9:50 am

I have an awesome juicing book and that is one of the recipes in the book – it’s called the “Rise and Shine”. Same ingredients as yours today except it also says to add a teaspoon of vanilla. That seems to give it that little extra flavour boost that it needs.

Also, my dad is Scottish and we have ALWAYS said “Rabbits” on the first of the month (in fact I have to call him now to say it!), but like Bethany it was just one “Rabbits” and my dad did say that the original saying is “White Rabbits” but we shortened it.

  • Amanda December 1, 2011, 9:52 am

I love Maggie’s coat. And she must really like it too since she’s actually wearing the hood. I had to remove the hood from my dog’s coat because she gets totally weirded out and keeps trying to bite it. It’s pretty funny to watch.

  • Ali @ Around the VeggieTable December 1, 2011, 9:52 am

haha that totally IS a honey badger face.

  • Army Amy* December 1, 2011, 9:54 am

Maggie looks so cute! I wish my dog wore clothes!*

  • Jessica December 1, 2011, 10:03 am

Your ‘rabbit rabbit’ comment seriously made me laugh! I used to say that with my family each month 🙂

  • Marcella December 1, 2011, 10:06 am

Zinc is best for when you feel a cold coming on! Hope you feel better soon.

  • caitlin December 1, 2011, 10:07 am

Love that quote. We have two wiener dogs and love dressing them up…they, on the other hand, do not love it so much 🙂

  • Heather @ Run Eat Play December 1, 2011, 10:14 am

I totally said rabbit, rabbit, this morning! Most people have no idea what I’m talking about. I love that you say it too!

  • Meg @ Runridelove December 1, 2011, 10:14 am

Any time I try to dress up my pup, she walks around stiff-legged and rubs up on furniture to try and conveniently rub the clothing right off! And I only used to try for her own good, she has very short hair also and gets cold running around in the snow!

  • Tessa @ Amazing Asset December 1, 2011, 10:15 am

I remembered to say it at 5:30 am when I woke up 🙂 I almost said something, but then I looked at my calendar…phew! haha

  • steph December 1, 2011, 10:16 am

ahhh maggie looks ADORABLE!!! the hood up is too cute

  • Reenie December 1, 2011, 10:19 am

OMG….Maggie looks adorable in her new coat 🙂

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

  • Ashley O. @ The Vegetable Life December 1, 2011, 10:20 am

Hahaha I love the pics of maggie, they are priceless!

  • Khushboo December 1, 2011, 10:23 am

An orange in a smoothie? Interesting!

  • Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon December 1, 2011, 10:27 am

Adorable coat! You should get a matching one! It would bring a new edge to lands ends’ matching family attire…

  • kathleen @ the daily crumb December 1, 2011, 10:33 am

i totally forgot! i am still in denial that it is december, though. where did 2011 go?!

maggie’s jacket is so cute. we have to bundle up our puppy this time of year, she’s so skinny that she freezes in this chicago weather!

  • Jodie December 1, 2011, 10:33 am

Maggie is seriously ADORABLE in that jacket!! I just want to give her a big squeeze!! I always LOVE the posts with the pups in them! Cuties!

  • Lee December 1, 2011, 10:42 am

I remembered to say it but I never remember to say it first thing which I think negates the good luck. Oh well. There’s always next month.

  • Katie @ Peace Love and Oats December 1, 2011, 10:46 am

I’ve never heard of saying rabbit?? But I love James’s coat!

  • Heather December 1, 2011, 11:02 am

you mentioning the triple R’s made me so happy this morning! My mother taught me about this long ago, and I say it every.single.month. But only ONCE – any more than that and it’s bad luck 😉

  • Amy Ramos December 1, 2011, 11:06 am

Happy White Rabbit’s Day to you too! My mum was from Scotland (which makes me 1/2 Scottish) and she would always wish us a Happy White Rabbit’s Day on the first of each month! I am carrying on that tradition by wishing my family a happy white rabbit’s day!
    Cheers!

  • Sonia (the Mexigarian) December 1, 2011, 11:09 am

I haven’t heard of this rabbit thing either. . . did I miss something? And Maggie looks adorable in her coat. So festive 🙂

  • Krista December 1, 2011, 11:24 am

dying at the honey badger face!

Check out http://www.kelsfit.com this morning. It’s one of my favorite blogs. She discovered some operation beautiful notes at her school!

  • Laura @ Backstage Balance December 1, 2011, 11:26 am

    Maggie’s jacket is adorable!

  • Emily December 1, 2011, 11:31 am

I don’t think I have ever aid “rabbit rabbit” at the beginning of a month. Is that why all the bad luck?

Maggie looks darling. Zeus (my pup) has very thin fur, so we’re thinking he might need a coat. Where did Maggie get hers?

    • Caitlin December 1, 2011, 5:01 pm

      @Emily: Petsmart!

  • Lauren December 1, 2011, 11:31 am

Lmao Maggie is too freakin’ cute. That hood is ridiculous, in the best way possible.

  • Emelie December 1, 2011, 11:42 am

Hi Caitlin – love your blog! Just thought I would pass this website along: http://www.westpawdesign.com/catalog/dogs/apparel/small-dog-sweaters/reknitz
My dachshund has two – they are great b/c they are nice and loooong!

  • Anna Crouch December 1, 2011, 11:44 am

    hahahahahahah The honey badger movie….. “The honey badger’s a bad a**…..he don’t give a sh*t!”

  • Carrie @ No More Tomorrows December 1, 2011, 11:47 am

I felt like I was suffering with allergies for about 3/4 of my pregnancy. I think it’s pretty normal, but miserable still.

  • Cynthia December 1, 2011, 11:48 am

My Spanish teacher in high school taught us to say conejo conejo every first of the month, although I still to this day have NO idea where conejo conejo / rabbit rabbit originates.

  • Laura December 1, 2011, 11:50 am

I need to get a jacket for our little Biscuit since she’s chihuahua/dachsund. She’s not very low to the ground, but her fur is so thin! My husband is completely against it though because he doesn’t want a dog to wear clothes. But I’m the one that walks her… so maybe I just need to made an executive decision.

  • Julie December 1, 2011, 11:50 am

Too cute- love her jacket! I also call my dog (a 65 pound hound mix) a “rabbit”- don’t know why or how that nickname started, but it fits 🙂

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing December 1, 2011, 11:56 am

Maggie is SO CUTE! And if she likes it… well, why not?!

  • Sarah@The Flying ONION December 1, 2011, 12:10 pm

Maggie is such a cutie! I babysat a toy poodle for a week once, and he would shiver and shake in the cold too. The coat was a must (although he definitely did NOT like it!)

  • Alexa @ The Girl In Chucks December 1, 2011, 12:20 pm

Weird…I’ve never heard of that “Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit” thing in my entire life! o_O

  • Kim December 1, 2011, 12:39 pm

That is the cutest jacket ever!

  • chelsey @ clean eating chelsey December 1, 2011, 12:42 pm

I got Charlie a sweater to wear this winter – it’s much too cold outside for short haired doggies!

  • Jen December 1, 2011, 12:53 pm

    That jacket is too cute!

  • Tamara December 1, 2011, 1:27 pm

Add oats to your smoothie. I do all the time now and it makes them much more balanced and wholesome.

  • katie @ KatieDid December 1, 2011, 1:34 pm

I hope you feel better! Maggie is adorable in the jacket and she’s clearly lovinggg it! haa

  • Amber K December 1, 2011, 1:37 pm

I never say “rabbit” I never would have even have heard of it if it weren’t for the internet (If you watch What The Buck on YouTube he does it too). But I do tell my best friend “Happy New Month!”, because we decided in high school that celebrating once a year wasn’t enough.

  • Brittney December 1, 2011, 2:51 pm

Huh, never heard of the rabbit rabbit thing! Ok, I just said it! I need all the luck I can get!

  • Julia H. @ The Petite Spiel December 1, 2011, 3:09 pm

I DID remember to say “rabbit rabbit” this morning! Last month was the first time I had ever even heard of it, so I got excited that this could be my first month of doing it properly.

Also, Maggie is so stylish. Sweet jacket.

  • Kiran @ KiranTarun.com December 1, 2011, 3:31 pm

Aww… your little Rabbit is amazingly cute 😉

  • Yolie @ Practising Wellness December 1, 2011, 3:54 pm

Aaah…. i adore Maggie, she is so cute and gorgeous – especially in her coat! She’d be like a mini santa, if it had a white trim. 😉 i don’t like dressing up my dogs either, but our yorkshire terrier needs a jacket to keep warm and snuggly in the winter months! <3 Bless them! Big hugs to Maggie and James! 🙂 xyx

  • Rebecca December 1, 2011, 3:59 pm

Maggie is adorable in her jacket! It’s so cute that she loves jackets. My cat would probably kill me if I put a jacket on her.

  • Kristen @ livinlifeinlouie December 1, 2011, 4:02 pm

I have never heard of Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit- but I like it!
also maggie looks adorable in her jacket!

  • Kate December 1, 2011, 4:05 pm

I’ve never heard anyone else say that before! We say ‘rabbit, rabbit’ and every time I’ve mentioned to anyone outside my family, they stare at me blankly. I heard it was a British thing (my mom was born in London) but she said she heard it from Nick Jr. when we were kids, haha!

  • Annie@stronghealthyfit December 1, 2011, 4:34 pm

    i love pets dressed up!

  • Corrie Anne December 1, 2011, 5:53 pm

Oh. I am DYING to get Boyd a cute little outfit. Too sweet!

  • Kristin December 1, 2011, 5:55 pm

FYI I’ve been stuffed up since very early in my pregnancy. I guess it’s a symptom, kind of annoying but really not that bad compared to other symptoms!

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin December 1, 2011, 6:30 pm

If you want a citrusy smoothie, I think Angela (Oh She Glows) has a recipe for a clementine smoothie that looks good!

  • Katie December 1, 2011, 6:31 pm

I cannot even handle how cute Maggie’s coat is.

  • Gina December 1, 2011, 6:53 pm

Not sure if someone already suggested this but if you use orange juice instead of orange slices I think it may tasted better.

  • Jo December 1, 2011, 10:49 pm

When I was about 5 years old and obsessed with the “Babysitters Little Sister” books about the younger sister of one of the Babysitters club gals, I read about the main character (Karen!) saying “Rabbit rabbit” at the beginning of every month when she first woke up. I just did it again this morning (just like I do at the beginning of every month) – almost 20 years later!

  • Kristin P. December 9, 2011, 7:33 pm

omg. LOVE Maggie in the coat. way too cute.
