Balance It Out

in All Posts

Today’s random food craving of the week is… BBQ chips.  Cannot get enough.  Best chip ever.

Balancing it out with vegetables, of course.

A spinach salad with balsamic, cucumbers, and tomatoes, and black-eyed pea vegetable soup.  The soup was from a little store called Berrybrook Farms and was positively fabulous – big chunks of squash and zucchini.

But seriously – all about those chips.

11 weeks is just around the corner, and I’m still feeling pretty good.  Jen loaned us an at-home doppler to listen to the baby’s heartbeat, and I’m trying not to use too much, but it’s SO fun to hear the baby.  And the heartbeat is still so fast – around 180 beats a minute.  I spend most days feeling thrilled and amazed that this is happening (the thought of another person’s heartbeat inside my body is mind-blowing), but I was really tired this afternoon.  By the time we got home from the clinic, I wasn’t in the mood to cook.

So I did a repeat of a meal from a couple of days ago… a hamburger bun with cranberry goat cheese and fruit.  It was fast and easy.  I was too tired to eat a big meal anyway.

And a handful of almonds with two big glasses of orange juice.  Pretty simple stuff.

Thought of the Day:

So much colorful, fresh, healthy food 🙂 Never thought of a hamburger bun as a meal option!

I love chips on my salads! I’m loving on lentil chips on my spinach salads lately. It’s so good. Get some rest tonight.

Pregnancy appetites are definitely interesting and yes… all about balance! Currently I am trying to balance my intake of honey nut chex mix with healthy things like ya know… veggies! 🙂

  • Sana November 21, 2011, 9:03 pm

BBQ chips are the shizzz 🙂

  • Cheryle November 21, 2011, 9:05 pm

Ah, Kettle Chips! Those are made here in Oregon, not far from where I live. I ADORE the barbeque chips, although the salt & cracked black pepper crinkle cut chips are my absolute fave.

True story – I interviewed for a marketing position at Kettle Foods a few years ago. I didn’t get the job, and in retrospect, it was probably for the best. I can only imagine the weight gain that would come from having such easy access to my snack of choice!

    • Caitlin November 22, 2011, 10:05 am

hahah that would be a fun job! i would love to be a marketer for potato chips 🙂

  • Sweet and Savvy November 21, 2011, 9:06 pm

That is absolutely amazing about the baby’s heartbeat! <3 I am so happy that you have been given such a blessing! 🙂

Fact: Potato chips are a vegetable (not really, but I’m trying to make you feel better).

  • Tina November 21, 2011, 9:09 pm

Yum, could really do with some of those chips right now!

How exciting being able to hear the baby’s heartbeat!

  • Army Amy* November 21, 2011, 9:11 pm

No BBQ chips for me, but the soup and salad look deelish!*

  • Joanna@DrizzleofSunshine November 21, 2011, 9:19 pm

I LOVE those chips! Kettle Chips are just more delicious than anything else!

That’s awesome that you get to listen to your baby’s heartbeat at home.

  • Wendy November 21, 2011, 9:23 pm

Oh, I remember that pregnancy fatigue so well, and it is most definitely REAL. I remember I was working on a dairy farm when I got pregnant with my first, and trying to run a few mornings a week. I had to quit running simply because I didn’t have the energy to run AND work at a very physical job, and they weren’t going to pay me to run!

    • Caitlin November 22, 2011, 10:06 am

I cannot imagine working on a FARM in the first trimester. You are awesome! I cannot even work at a desk 🙂

  • Tee @ She Writes, Bites, and Window Shops November 21, 2011, 9:52 pm

Mmm bbq kettle chips are soooo addicting!

  • Laura November 21, 2011, 10:08 pm

I think you’re having a girl! The high heartbeat plus the orange juice tells me you have a mini-Caitlin in there 🙂

    • Amy November 22, 2011, 8:40 am

I agree! I know the heartbeat thing isn’t an exact science, but it was right for my first 2 kids….the girls was always 160 and the boys was 145. At my 8 week appt last week, our new one was 160. Maybe another girl? Hehe

What does the orange juice mean? I haven’t heard that one.

      • Caitlin November 22, 2011, 10:07 am

        Really?! I wouldn’t mind a girl 🙂

  • Pam November 21, 2011, 10:18 pm

Ok the backyard BBQ chips are the.best.ever. It’s torture seeing them since I’ve only ever seen them here twice! =(

  • Morgan November 21, 2011, 10:31 pm

I never wished you congratulations, so happy for you! Enjoy this time it’s AMAZING!!! I craved chips my whole first trimester too-salt and vinegar, I inhaled them! They say salty cravings = boy (and sure enough I got a beautiful little boy).

  • Baking Serendipity November 21, 2011, 10:47 pm

Kettle chips are my favorite guilty snack! I haven’t tried the bbq flavor before…I must!

  • Susan November 21, 2011, 11:28 pm

If it’s a boy, will you call him Chip?

    • Caitlin November 22, 2011, 10:08 am

Hehehe I like the way you think.

  • Alison November 21, 2011, 11:30 pm

Now I’m craving BBQ chips too! This is what happens when a pregnant chick reads other pregnant chicks’ blogs 😉

  • TiffanyS November 21, 2011, 11:37 pm

During my first pregnancy I was on the road most of the time, and I had a serious salt addiction. I wanted a different kind of chips everyday. I’d get hom and bring 4 or 5 different bags of partially eaten chips to my hubby. Fritos were the saltiest. Kettle chips are my favorites now though. My body must have needed the extra sodium, as I just couldn’t get enough.

    • Caitlin November 22, 2011, 10:08 am

      I crave olives!

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) November 22, 2011, 12:06 am

now I am also craving bbq chips!

  • Khushboo November 22, 2011, 12:32 am

I always think I have a sweet tooth but when Kettle chips are placed in front of me, it’s a whole different story!

  • Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut November 22, 2011, 12:57 am

OMG I was just thinking today that I was addicted to Baked Lays BBQ chips!! Although I have no excuse as I’m not pregnant…or even hormonal at this time…just love me some BBQ chips!

    Soup looks yummy too! 🙂

  • katie @ KatieDid November 22, 2011, 4:04 am

BBQ chips are pretty much an everyday craving for me, mmmm! That’s gotta be so amazing to hear such a tiny heart beating wow!

  • Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count November 22, 2011, 6:11 am

I gave up chips for Lent and haven’t had them since, I’m glad too. Much easier to maintain a healthy weight. Ooo…cranberry goat cheese sounds yummy.

  • Emily November 22, 2011, 6:20 am

Congrats! I just found out I was pregnant and am only 5 weeks along, so it’s fun to read your posts about what’s to come. This waiting period to tell everyone is KILLING me though! Can’t wait to hear more about Baby HTP.

    • Caitlin November 22, 2011, 10:09 am

Yay! I am so happy for you, Emily! 🙂 How wonderful 🙂 🙂

Awesome – thank you for this link!!! I will definitely be referring to it in the future!

  • Amanda November 22, 2011, 8:14 am

Those kettle chips are seriously good, and highly addictive!

How amazing to be able to listen to your baby’s heartbeat. It truly is mind-blowing when you think about what’s happening in there. I can’t even wrap my head around it.

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin November 22, 2011, 8:18 am

That must be so amazing to hear your baby’s heartbeat!

I can never decide whether I like BBQ chips or not… I’m more of a sour cream and onion kind of girl. 😀

  • lauren November 22, 2011, 10:32 am

OMG those kettle chips are amazing! I like the loaded ones too 🙂
Glad to see someone mention a doppler. My sister is pregnant with her 4th and thinking of getting one…I teased her about it because she’s had 3 pregnancies without it, but at least I’ll be able to borrow it in the future.

  • Tricia November 22, 2011, 12:40 pm

I am debating a Doppler. I am 14 weeks and would love to be able to check in. Which one do you have? I can’t find a store that sells them. Only online.

    • Caitlin November 22, 2011, 1:40 pm

Let me ask Jen to answer this!

      • Jen November 22, 2011, 2:02 pm

I have the Sonoline B. I honestly just chose that one because it was one of the cheaper options (around $60). It did the job fine though! And I had to order it online.

        • Tricia November 22, 2011, 3:33 pm

Thanks Jen. Anxiously reading your blog for the news!

  • Julia H. @ The Petite Spiel November 22, 2011, 1:00 pm

Oh wow, cranberry goat cheese. That sounds phenomenal. Baby HTP must be enjoying all these yummies!

  • Amber K November 22, 2011, 1:02 pm

I often wonder if I get pregnant whether my cravings will completely change. I’m a totally sweets person and I wonder if I will start craving salt (which I dislike).

  • Jess November 22, 2011, 1:10 pm

Uh-oh! This was/is my craving girl! LOVED them! Also loved bbq fritos (I know, not a healthy choice) but the BBQ flavor was DELISH! So if you wanna do old wives tales…Im having a boy 😉 Im convinced the craving of smoky/savory rather than sweet was it 😉 lol

  • Emily November 22, 2011, 4:26 pm

Are most potato chips gluten free? I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease last week and I am having a hard time figuring this all out! Mostly I have just been eating fruits and veggies but I’m hungryyyy.

    • CaitlinHTP November 22, 2011, 4:34 pm

You need to get Panda Puffs, millet, quinoa, and Udi’s bread 🙂 Those brand of potato chips are GF!
