Birthday Boy

in All Posts

Today is the Husband’s birthday, and as you know, birthdays in our house mean you rule the roost for the day.  Unfortunately, I am currently sitting in the airport on my way to Ivanhoe, Minnesota for an Operation Beautiful presentation tomorrow.

I’ve never been to Minnesota or South Dakota (I’m flying into Sioux Falls) before.  I’m interested to see this part of the country.  From Google maps, I’m anticipating it will be rural and cozy.  Rumor has it I’ll be presenting to the entire Ivanhoe high school on Monday – 175 students!  Crazy.  I had nearly 800 students in my graduating class.

So the Husband and I only had this morning together.  Per tradition, breakfast in bed:

Public Service Announcement:  The next time you’re at the grocery store, pick up the herbs-in-a-tube, the Italian flavor.  They are SO delicious and taste amazing on toast with eggs.  Way healthier and more flavorful than butter, too.  We had our eggs and toast with a side of fruit.

The Husband wanted to take the dogs on a walk around a neighborhood we’re considering buying in, so that’s how we spent the morning.   We talked to some of the dads mowing lawns and everyone seemed very friendly.  Good sign!

And then he dropped me off at the airport.

Wahh.  Not going to lie, I felt really guilty for leaving the Husband on his birthday, even though we decided to do this about two months ago.  Can’t pass up a good work opportunity!   I think his plans for the rest of the day involve sitting on the couch and watching a marathon of sports programming, so he’ll be just fine.

Still – it was sad.

Grabbed some lunch after going through security.  I had a veggie burrito with rice, black beans, grilled veggies, sour cream, and salsa.

And of course…

Happy Mother’s Day!  I hope everyone takes a moment today to honor or remember their mother, mother-in-law, or any special woman who fulfills that mothery role.  Mothers rule!

Time to board!

PS – Peter Hollens (remember the funny story of how we met?) has a new video out!  What do you think?

Loves!

    • CaitlinHTP May 8, 2011, 2:47 pm

It’s from New York and Company and I think I got it two months ago – I just checked the website really quickly and didn’t see it 🙁

  • Evan Thomas May 8, 2011, 2:46 pm

My highschool was about 160 students total, 38 or so in my class. I love how well you get to know everyone.

    Happy birthday, Kristien!

  • Freya May 8, 2011, 2:47 pm

800 in your high school graduating class!? Woah! There was maybe 120 in mine!?
    Have a safe flight!

  • Emma (Namaste Everyday) May 8, 2011, 2:48 pm

I bought that Italian herb paste when I moved to New Zealand (since I knew fresh herb would need to take a 5-month hiatus in my shopping cart) and it was the best decision! I love it! It’s sweeter than I expected, but totally in a good way, like herb butter as you said!

  • Meaghan O'Connor May 8, 2011, 2:54 pm

  • Emily May 8, 2011, 3:33 pm

Cool trip! I’m from a small town by Sioux falls SD!! My graduating class was 11. R u renting a car and then driving to MN? I’ve never even heard of that small town u are heading to.. 🙂 hope u enjoy your time there!!

  • Kelly May 8, 2011, 3:52 pm

Happy Birthday to your husband!! I loved how you said “Mum” in his picture…I want my husband to have a British accent…hahaha!

  • Shannon May 8, 2011, 3:53 pm

Caitlin, I just have to tell you, I’m 40 years old and a native Minnesotan, have lived in this state most of my life (except 6 years of graduate school in Chicago), and I have never heard of Ivanhoe. It must be TINY. Minnesota is a BIG state (very tall) so there is a lot of geography! I live in Northfield, which is a very cool hip liberal artsy little college town one hour south of Minneapolis, but surrounded by rural countryside. I wonder where Ivanhoe is?!

  • Christine May 8, 2011, 3:53 pm

I’ve been to both and thought Minnesota was really nice (super humid in July, but should be okay now). So green and clean! Good luck!

  • Molly May 8, 2011, 3:57 pm

Ha I am from Omaha, Nebraska the middle of the USA and it is not rural at all! I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Omaha actually has 5 fortune 500 companies. Who would think!

My graduating class was about 60 but it was a private all girls school that was competitive to get into. I can’t imagine going to a school with a class of 800! That must have been neat. I don’t even think there were that many in my college graduating class.

Have so much fun! Happy birthday to your husband.

  • Heather May 8, 2011, 3:58 pm

The italian herbs are great, but I have to definitely disagree with your butter statement. It’s not unhealthy, and it would take that toast with the herbs to another level of yumminess. Just sayin’.

  • Ellen May 8, 2011, 4:04 pm

I was born in Sioux Falls and grew up in St. Paul. The Twin Cities are really the best part of MN (OK, I’m biased), but I hope you enjoy your time in the country!

That’s a beautiful picture of you and your mom, BTW. Love mother’s day.

  • Kiran @ KiranTarun.com May 8, 2011, 4:12 pm

    Happy Birthday Kristien!

  • Jacalyn May 8, 2011, 4:17 pm

Happy Mother’s Day to the mother of two wonderful pups! I celebrated my Mother’s Day this year by competing in my first ever triathlon. Bad news: I panicked in the lake water and dropped from 4th place in the swim to last place in the swim. The good news: I more than made up for it in the bike and run by passing 17 other women in my age group and coming in 35th in my category. The best part of the race was having my husband and 2 year old son there to cheer me on. It was a great day.
(Don’t worry about your hubby. In my experience of being with my husband for 13 years, their feelings don’t get hurt like ours and they are TOTALLY content having the tv to themselves to binge on sports).

  • grace May 8, 2011, 4:47 pm

wow, i have lived in minneapolis my entire life and haven’t ever heard of ivanhoe, either! too bad you’re not flying in to the twin cities, it’s fabulous.

  • Holly @ The Runny Egg May 8, 2011, 4:47 pm

Happy Birthday to you hubby!! It is sad that you had to leave him on his birthday..but no doubt it was just as special having you there for the first half of it. 🙂

  • Baking 'n' Books May 8, 2011, 5:51 pm

That presentation will be a cake-walk for you! Actually…anything after Meredith Veira should be a lot less nerve-wracking 😉 – love her – is she as friendly as she seems? I hope she doesn’t leave the Today show yet!

Ooooh – I want to know about this house thing!! I can’t decide between location or the size or pay of the place! – and it’s not even a house!

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) May 8, 2011, 6:10 pm

I would guilty too — but you know you’ll make it up to him! Hope he has a great birthday and you have a safe trip.

  • Raya May 8, 2011, 8:15 pm

There were only 72 kids in my graduating class!!! Crazy, but now that I’m older I realize how lucky and fortunate I was to have grown up in such a small community.

  • Anne May 8, 2011, 8:28 pm

My mom and dad used to live in Sioux Falls (way back in the day), and we used to go back to South Dakota every summer to visit my grandma. It’s a fun place to see!

Happy birthday to your hubs! It’s too bad you have to spend it apart from him, but at least you got the morning together. 🙂

  • Michelle @ Turning Over a New Leaf May 9, 2011, 11:30 am

I love Wayfaring Stranger! I specifically love the Jack White version in Cold Mountain, but this one is pretty cool, too. 🙂

  • Amber K May 9, 2011, 11:30 am

I went to a large high school too. Although, my graduating class was half of yours, so obviously not that big! I always spend my birthday with my best friend, but this year she’s going out of town for her brother’s wedding. It’ll be sad, but my husband and I are still planning to live it up!

  • Lacey @ Lake Life May 9, 2011, 8:01 pm

Happy Birthday to the hubs! I thought he was Vegan?

P.S. My graduating class had 98 people, therefore everyone knew everyone else’s business. I would have loved to graduate with a class of 800 students!
