Meatball Stealin’ Sausage

in All Posts

It’s a joke among food bloggers that we’ll put our plates in some weird locations to get the best light.  Especially at night.

IMG_7318

(I need a new bulb!)

I put my dinners on the floor of the hallway in between our kitchen and living room.

IMG_7319

Normally, I can just put my dinner down and no one bother it.

But tonight… someone tried to steal a meatball from my plate!  Caught the little sausage with her tongue poised over my plate.

IMG_7314

Dinner was faux meatballs, pasta sauce, and slices of wonderful thick bread:

IMG_7317

The bread was actually from our friend Carol, who gave us a loaf for Christmas with a hand-written recipe! (I’ll ask her if I can post it because it was awesomeee!).

IMG_7310

Dessert was about six tiny sugar cookies from my OTHER neighbor (our neighbors are super friendly):

IMG_7308

Hmm… What else?  I got bunches of work done and I ran 3.0 miles with Nicole after I was done.  However, I actually drank a glass of wine prior to running, and the run was not so much fun.  Wine + running = No fun.  Live and learn. 🙂

Would you dare put your plate on the floor in front of your pet?

No, I have an eagle eye with my plates. I don’t blame your pup though! It looks yummy.

  • Amy December 21, 2010, 9:19 pm

I love that you drank a glass of wine before running.

And NO – no way would I leave my plates around my greedy kitties!

  • Leila December 21, 2010, 9:20 pm

My pup is pretty good about not eating people food unless I hand it to her. But my parents dogs…not so much. Wine+run sounds terrible. But I bet wine+recumbent bike at the gym and an US Weekly would work out okay 🙂

  • Jennifer December 21, 2010, 9:23 pm

My kitties would take the plate on the floor as an invitation to chow down. =)

And, no, “wining” or “wunning” does not sound fun at all.

  • Charlie December 21, 2010, 9:24 pm

Since snow covered my balcony, I have to find creative ways to find great light night and day ;).
Before that, I was looking weird, outside on my balcony at -10°C taking pictures and freezing :P.

  • Camille December 21, 2010, 9:28 pm

I usually put my plate on my balcony or window sills. I think I could keep the dog at bay long enough, but there really isn’t any good places to take photos on the floor in my house.

  • Annette December 21, 2010, 9:36 pm

Nice that you got to do a run- it is COLD out here! And NO I would never put my plate down near where my pets could take off from it 🙁

  • nancy December 21, 2010, 9:41 pm

Nope. Not unless I wanted to get rid of it anyway. 🙂

  • Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) December 21, 2010, 9:45 pm

You have great neighbors. Mine avoid even making eye contact, no matter how many times we pass each other in the hall or if I say ‘hi.’ It’s strange.

  • Caitlin December 21, 2010, 9:46 pm

Thought any fellow runner would appreciate this video! Happy Holidays!

  • Allie (Live Laugh Eat) December 21, 2010, 9:46 pm

I’ve got no pets so I can put my plate anywhere. It usually goes outside, on the window sill or in my dorky lightbox

  • Baking 'n' Books December 21, 2010, 9:46 pm

No! The last time I did that it ended up in a cat’s nose and then on the floor :(. I don’t trust them anymore 😉

You have GREAT neighbors 🙂 Mine brought me over a turkey cabbage pasta casserole and are inviting me for Christmas. I can only imagine the possibilities! 🙂

  • Jillian@ Reshape Your Life December 21, 2010, 9:46 pm

I most definitely cannot put my food on the floor. My dog would take that as an open invitation… But if it’s on a table or tv tray or something 99% of the time it is safe.

  • Evan Thomas December 21, 2010, 9:47 pm

My dog used to want whatever food you were eating. Whether it was on the floor or in your hand, he’d be begging for some.
You should make a light box! I am in love with the one I set up on Saturday. I’m still getting used to it, but as a photography junky it’s really fun to play with.

  • Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) December 21, 2010, 9:48 pm

“we’ll put our plates in some weird locations to get the best light. Especially at night.”

Omg I am traveling and the lighting in my kitchen here SUCKS! No matter how many windows & curtains i open, doors, angles, places, you name it, everything is either orange. Or in shadows. In broad daylight. So yeah, i hear you.

But I can’t complain b/c im in Aruba and so ill take the craptastic kitchen lighting anyway 🙂

  • Stacy @ Every Little Thing December 21, 2010, 9:49 pm

That’s funny. I would put it on the floor but NEVER turn my back on it. Roxie would eyeball it, drool, sneak very slowly up to it, and wait til I wasn’t paying attention. She’s very smart and VERY patient.

  • Amanda (Eating Up) December 21, 2010, 9:53 pm

In front of my pet? Yes. In front of my sister’s crazy cats? Heck no. Especially when dinner is sushi.

  • Victoria (District Chocoholic) December 21, 2010, 9:54 pm

Wine + run = fun if you do them in the right order.

When I coached a master’s swim team years ago, there was a guy who regularly showed up to 7 pm Friday practices post-happy hour. Yeah…

  • Ashley December 21, 2010, 9:55 pm

Too funny! I think I could get away with leaving my plate on the floor in front of the dog – but just for a very brief while. If I leave the room for more than just a second – he’ll think it’s fair game for sure!

  • Toronto Girl West December 21, 2010, 10:00 pm

I’ve often tempted my Daisy (she’s a puppy) with my food while I take a picture. Sure she begs and tries to get to it but she’ll never actually go for it. I think she knows better! 🙂

  • Anna December 21, 2010, 10:00 pm

Seeing as my most recent pet was a bird (Jellybean, may you rest in peace after 10 good long years), he would probably step all over my food were he given the chance. So no.

If I tried to run after boozing (however lightly) I’d be TOAST.

  • Cyndi @ Weightless Life December 21, 2010, 10:07 pm

That plate of food would be gone in an instant. My dog is like a vacuum. I can’t even leave food on the counter with her around.

  • carlee December 21, 2010, 10:07 pm

I think Addie would go straight for it!
I love getting new ideas for where to put my food though for pictures!

  • jenny in new york December 21, 2010, 10:09 pm

Oh i’ve been wanting to try faux meatballs. When i ate meat I was never a big meatball girl but i want to try them now.

    What brand do you reccomend??

  • ashley @ ashley's adventures in alaska December 21, 2010, 10:11 pm

I would put my plate on the floor in front of our dogs. They may not have the best behavior, but respect that food on plates isn’t for them. If only I could convince our little fluffer (our year old maltipoo) to be as good at coming when I called her, life would be good!

  • Paige @Running Around Normal December 21, 2010, 10:17 pm

Oh yeah wine + cardio = no bueno.
I don’t think the pets dare touch my plate if I put it on the floor. But then again I’ve never left a plate of food on the floor when I wasn’t in the room.

  • Ashley December 21, 2010, 10:28 pm

I would never put food in front of a dog or cat. ever. The only pet I have at the moment is a fish, so I think it would be ok to put food in front of him.

  • the veg meg December 21, 2010, 10:31 pm

NOOOO I WOULD NOT. my doggie, Achilles, is a rather stout and not-rat-like-at-all Chihuahua, and he is a little food aggressive… heck NO. he does well enough stealing our dinner when we’re not offering it to him! my cat, though..she knows better. she’ll get a good sniff but she won’t try to eat it. unless it’s almond milk or oatmeal, then all bets are off.

    • Caitlin December 22, 2010, 8:23 am

Can I just say I love your dog is named Achilles?

      • the veg meg December 22, 2010, 9:08 am

Hahah! Thanks! We didn’t name him, though, he was like six years old when we got him so a little late to change it :] (Kitty’s name is Hippo, which we did pick!)

  • Jen December 21, 2010, 10:36 pm

No way! My dog is a thief, I caught her the other night sticking her nose in a tin of cookies I was going to mail the next day. Drinks aren’t even safe with her, she loves tea!

  • Katy (The Singing Runner) December 21, 2010, 10:49 pm

I have to put my cat in another room while I eat. She will literally have her face in my food if I don’t!

  • Dynamics December 21, 2010, 10:52 pm

YES, and I can leave the room. Cody, my perfect dog.

  • Kristina @ Life as Kristina December 21, 2010, 10:58 pm

Italian food is not safe anywhere in my house! haha-he’s sneaky & can jump= deadly combo!
    ps-love the food tray:)

  • Lacey @ Lake Life December 21, 2010, 11:14 pm

I don’t have a pet, but my parent’s dog is allowed to lick the plates (they have a dishwasher so all germs get killed afterwards) so he would just think he got super lucky if a full plate of food was on the floor!

  • Sara @ OurDogBuffy December 22, 2010, 12:37 am

I would never DREAM of putting a plate (or most anything) on the floor, in front of my cats and dogs! Nothing gets past them–especially the dogs. The fish, I can trust him. I posted the other night that our Standard Poodle, Jasper, got his stocking down from our hutch/dry sink and chewed holes through it to get to the giant cookie bone and marrow bone in his stocking. His own stocking too–not Buffy’s–and hers had the same things inside. Jasper is one smart dog and you can’t trust smart (or quick) ones around food!

    • Caitlin December 22, 2010, 8:23 am

      oHMIGOD! Lol

  • Cassie December 22, 2010, 12:46 am

I can barely eat at the table without my cat trying to steal my food, let alone leave the plate on the floor where she has better access to it. Lol. She will eat almost anything she has access to. I’ve caught her trying to sneak into the fridge when I’ve left it open to put food away.

  • Kristina @ spabettie December 22, 2010, 12:56 am

wow, I could NEVER place food on the floor – Basil would be all over that. 😀

    dinner looks great!

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing December 22, 2010, 1:20 am

Haha not on your life!! My cats (yes cats) would have a feast!

  • Alexa @ The Girl In Chucks December 22, 2010, 1:47 am

Nope. My cat would eat my food in a minute. 😉

  • Shannon @ Philadelphia Phitness Pharmacy December 22, 2010, 2:19 am

I have a fish named bunny. Bunny is usually good about not swiping my snacks.

  • Marina December 22, 2010, 2:35 am

I’m not sure, my cat eats all kinds of things. He likes tofu ,avocado, and peas. What a strange cat 😀

  • Wei-Wei December 22, 2010, 3:39 am

I kind of imagined you stagger/running around for three miles after the wine… would be funny to watch, though 😉

  • Cindy December 22, 2010, 5:27 am

My Sasha (when she was alive) would eat anything. A plate like that would be gone in about 30 seconds. She would even drink coffee and Kahlua and milk. She climbed up on the couch and drank half my dad’s coffee once at Christmas! She was a crazy Dachshund! My cat, was not partial to people food. He would sniff my plate and occasionally lick it if there had been fish on it or something but he generally is not interested in food unless it is in his bowl.

    • Caitlin December 22, 2010, 8:24 am

      Hahah dachshunds rule.

  • April December 22, 2010, 6:28 am

I have 3 chocolate labs and to say they LOOOOVE food would be an understatement. One, very politely, always waits to be given permission for everything. The other 2, if told to wait, would drool so fiercely that I’m afraid they would flood my house. But if I give the OK…don’t be between them and the plate!!

  • Amalfi Girl December 22, 2010, 6:41 am

I would have thought wine + running would = fun…who knew?

  • Lauren December 22, 2010, 6:49 am

I do the same thing with my oatmeal in the mornings. I lay it on the floor by the big sliding door to get the best light but what no one really sees is my little pup hovered over the bowl licking his chops in the background.
Wine before running! That could be the next best thing if it wasn’t for the whole gastro problems. 😉

  • chelsey @ clean eating chelsey December 22, 2010, 7:22 am

I don’t have a pet, but only if they were trained very well!

  • VeggieGirl December 22, 2010, 7:31 am

I wouldn’t dare do that – Chooey would have the plate in two seconds, haha 🙂

  • Michele @ Healthy Cultivations December 22, 2010, 7:49 am

The plate would barely make it to the floor before being devoured.

  • Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) December 22, 2010, 8:17 am

Haha…my black lab was trained to “leave it” on request, but I still couldn’t trust him with a meatball. 😉

  • Carolyn @ Lovin' Losing December 22, 2010, 8:26 am

Not a chance! My food would be gone before I could turn around.

  • Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday December 22, 2010, 8:37 am

If I were watching her I think it would be okay. Otherwise, not a chance.
Especially if the meal involved cheese or peanuts.

  • Ryan M. December 22, 2010, 9:07 am

Heck no! I have 3 dachshunds and they are very food motivated creatures!

  • Shelly December 22, 2010, 10:17 am

I have 2 cats and 2 dogs, so definitely not. The dogs at least will leave my plate alone unless it’s on the floor, but the cats will steal food off the table if it’s left unattended. The only safe place to leave a dish alone in my house is the kitchen counter!

  • Ali @ Food, Fitness, Fashion December 22, 2010, 10:42 am

I wrote about my little sausage trying to steal my waffle yesterday morning…ha!

  • Jamie @ A Healthy J.D. December 22, 2010, 10:50 am

I tried to do this for the first time the other day and both my dogs charged the plate. Looks like I won’t be doing any floor photography unless my husband is around to play goalie. 🙂

  • Melissa December 22, 2010, 11:56 am

I have two dogs– a german shepherd and the other a mix of pug, beagle, and shi tzu; they know better than to take food off of my plate on the floor, but if left too long they will think it is for them. So gotta move quick with the photos.

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin December 22, 2010, 11:58 am

I’m always putting my plates on the floor trying to get good lighting! Luckily I don’t have any pets!

  • Sophia December 22, 2010, 12:42 pm

That’s so funny that you mention the lighting! I just started blogging about my meals, and I kept thinking, I have a decent camera, but my pics never seem to look as good as everyone else’s. Must be the lighting! Thanks!

  • susan (stepping off the coaster) December 22, 2010, 12:46 pm

my 150 lb newfoundland knows he’s not supposed to touch our food, but he gets his big huge nose as close as he possibly can and just sniffs really hard… like maybe the smell will be enough to satisfy him.
watch out if you put on chapstick… b/c he tries to do the same thing, only then his huge wet nose is right in your face! hahaha

  • Amber K December 22, 2010, 1:05 pm

I don’t have any pets, but I wouldn’t put my plate anywhere near anyone else.

To (somewhat) quote Friends “AMBER DOESN’T SHARE FOOD!” I will gladly get up and get someone else more food, buy them their own, make them their own, but they better watch it if they think they are going to get a bite of mine!

  • Lisa December 22, 2010, 1:06 pm

No way! My kitty would be right in there!

  • Kiran December 22, 2010, 3:06 pm

This reminds me, I am yet to bake sugar cookies 😀
