Clear My Inbox

Clear my mind?

2010-12-21_1029

Lately, I’ve been on an unsubscribe warpath, mercilessly removing myself from every mass mailing list my e-mails somehow got attached to.  I realized yesterday that I get upwards of 20 spam emails each morning, so I’m hoping that by clearing my inbox, I can eventually increase productivity a smidge.

Huge annoyance:  When you unsubscribe and then you get another email asking if you were SURE you want to unsubscribe.  No… I found the little link at the bottom of your email and then clicked through, checked a box, and hit submit on accident.  Grrr.

In other news… The Husband is on a roll with meal-making and cooked breakfast again.

In the mix:

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 banana
  • Toppings: white chocolate chips and almonds

You crack me up…thanks for the smiles first thing this morning!

  • Madeline - Greens and Jeans December 21, 2010, 10:58 am

I did the exact same thing the other day! Feels SO good to clean up the ole inbox a little!

  • Carolyn @ EatWell. LiveWell. BeWell. December 21, 2010, 11:06 am

Do you make your oatmeal on the stove top?

    • Caitlin December 21, 2010, 11:07 am

Yup, always. It only takes 5 minutes!

  • Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday December 21, 2010, 11:06 am

Oooh white chocolate chips! How decadent.

  • Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin December 21, 2010, 11:07 am

White chocolate chips are my favorite. I made some chocolate covered pretzels with white chocolate and sprinkles to bring to a party tonight as a little favor!

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg December 21, 2010, 11:09 am

Ugh– I TOTALLY need to do that! When every semester ends, I have SO much mail that I could delete, but half of it always just sits in my inbox.

  • Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman December 21, 2010, 11:10 am

I put chocolate chips in my oats but I NEED to try this. I love white chocolate.

re: unsubscribing: I hate when you unsubscribe but keep getting the e-mails. Or e-mails like Pottery Barn that do not have an unsubscribe option!

  • Amalfi Girl (EatRunHaveFun.blogspot) December 21, 2010, 11:11 am

White chocolate chips. Your hubby may have just rocked my world. Sorry. 😉

  • bakingnbooks December 21, 2010, 11:11 am

The white chips are like snow on your oatmeal 🙂

    Holiday-themed eats 😉

  • Sarah for Real December 21, 2010, 11:16 am

I’ve been trying to unsubscribe lately too, except that it doesn’t seem to work all the time! It’s obscene the amount of junk I get.

ps chocolate chips in your oatmeal? Can you please send your husband westward to make me some breakfast 😉

  • Madeleine @ Stepping to the Bright Side December 21, 2010, 11:17 am

Ooooo, white chocolate chips… beautiful in a photo and GREAT going down 🙂

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat December 21, 2010, 11:18 am

I am SO with you on all the unsubscribes – I’ve been doing that like crazy lately! I too would also like your hubby to come make my breakfast. 🙂

  • Katy (The Singing Runner) December 21, 2010, 11:20 am

That is a pet peeve of mine! It’s like “duh, I already said I wanted to unsubscribe!”

I love white chocolate chips and almonds! Such a a winning combination!

    Have a great day! 🙂

  • Ashley December 21, 2010, 11:22 am

I’ve been to lazy to unsubscribe and as a result I abandoned an email address that has thousands of spam in its inbox. I think I’m just going to delete the address.

  • nicole December 21, 2010, 11:25 am

Spam is a huge annoyance and the reason I got a new email address. I’m going to check out that tutorial!

  • Megan G. December 21, 2010, 11:25 am

I hear ya about the unsubscribing thing. I’m applying to colleges right now and somehow my email got on a list that went to a bunch of random colleges. Now that I know where I’m going to college next year, unsubscribing to every one is annoying.

White chocolate chips in oatmeal? Yum! 🙂

  • sarah k. @ the pajama chef December 21, 2010, 11:28 am

now that looks like a fab bowl of oatmeal! and i’ve been on an unsubscribing kick too. everyone always says to have a separate email for mass mailings but then i’d never even read what i want to… periodic unsubscribing is necessary. 🙂

  • Christy December 21, 2010, 11:29 am

I’ve done the same thing with newsletters. There are a few websites that no matter how many times I unsubscribe, I still get emails. Now that’s annoying!

  • Ali @ Food, Fitness, Fashion December 21, 2010, 11:39 am

I need to do the SAME THING! I get so much crap, mostly from stores and it is super annoying. I never look at it either, just delete it. I will be unsubscribing and making my life simpler. Thanks for the reminder.

  • Katie @ Up Fit Creek December 21, 2010, 11:40 am

I’ve been working hard to unsubscribe to both e-mail and snail mail spam. It’s time consuming to get rid of that stuff and the paper stuff is a total waste of resources. Easier said than done, as you mentioned. Lots of jumping through hoops to get them to take you off either kind of list.

  • Karen December 21, 2010, 11:44 am

I went on an unsubscribing rampage a few weeks ago. I love when you go to the site, click through to unsubscribe and they tell you your request will take days or weeks to process!

  • Erica December 21, 2010, 11:47 am

I do that occasionally too! It’s really bad now, I’m getting emails from my favorite stores every day and I just want to buy myself clothes!!

Um, now I want to put white chocolate chips on my oatmeal tomorrow! YUM! I only have some red ones that I used to make Christmas candy 🙂 hahah it will be festive oatmeal!

  • grocery goddess jen December 21, 2010, 11:47 am

I did that awhile ago, too, got my name off some email lists. However, it always seems like stuff keeps popping up that I didn’t know I was on!

  • Lisa December 21, 2010, 11:48 am

I’m with you. I HATE HATE email newsletters. I never sign up for them but somehow they get my email. I unsubscribed and mark them all spam.

  • Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) December 21, 2010, 11:48 am

I hate those spam emails. I hate that they sign you up for crap when you aren’t looking for it! Have a great day Caitlin!

  • Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) December 21, 2010, 11:56 am

I do the unsub thing every few months or so. It’s GREAT. And it’s good for a while and then all of a sudden, the junk and clutter…creeps back in. So annoying that ppl think you want their stuff..daily. I love Express and Vic’s Secret but i also dont need a DAILY ad from them. Some of those places you can set the frequency but it seems they kinda ignore their own “rules”!

  • Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine December 21, 2010, 12:03 pm

I unsubscribed from about twenty sites the other day. It felt awesome. And now my Blackberry blinks half as awesome, which means I have to check it less compulsively 🙂

  • Wendy G December 21, 2010, 12:06 pm

Haha! I got an email that literally said “Dear ___, this email is to confirm you no longer want to receive emails from _____.”

Really?! An email to confirm I don’t want to see your emails???? Comeon…

  • Krista (kristastes) December 21, 2010, 12:11 pm

Those ornaments are so. freaking. cute!

  • Jessie Bea December 21, 2010, 12:25 pm

I’m with you on those annoying emails I get every single morning that I delete without opening! I just unsubscribed to 3 different email lists yesterday and got the same annoying confirmation email from all 3 of them.

  • Alexa @ The Girl In Chucks December 21, 2010, 12:27 pm

I’ve been trying to unsubscribe to everything too! It amazed me how many e-mails I delete all of the time, just to avoid having to go through the unsubscribing process. I’ve realized why though….the irritation when I’ve unsubscribed AND THEY DON’T TAKE ME OFF OF THEIR LIST!

I’m looking at you, Crate & Barrel.

I had to unsubscribe like, 2-4 (don’t remember the exact number) times before it took. The worst part is I never even bought anything for myself from their online store. I purchased a wedding gift off of a friend’s registry this summer and I specifically remember UNclicking the box for “send me super awesome C&B deals via e-mail”. Yet, I still got 2 or 3 mails a day.

  • Tina @ The Shakespearean Tomato December 21, 2010, 12:34 pm

Oh my goodness! I have so been doing this right now too! I don’t know how I end up on so many lists, and with it being almost Christmas the constant BUY BUY BUY emails have been driving me batty. I have been making a point to unsubscribe to everything the past week and it is slowly making a difference. I probably get only 1 REAL email for every 20-30 spam emails…pretty sad.

  • Rachel December 21, 2010, 12:41 pm

I recently had the same problem. Every morning I would have 20+ junk emails. I unsubscribed from almost everything last week. It seems like I am still getting emails from the companies that I unsubscribed from. Maybe it takes awhile to have an effect, but I am annoyed about it!

  • Amber K December 21, 2010, 12:45 pm

Ugh, I hate having to unsubscribe. I try and do it every so often and the confirmation e-mails are the worst. Because they always seem to come from the websites that I had to fight to unsubscribe from in the first place!

  • Kiran December 21, 2010, 12:56 pm

I know the feeling. Somehow, my email address are all over and I get spammed all the time. I just went on a rage to get everything (or so I thought) unsubscribed and that SPAM thingy is still very much in power. Sigh.

  • carlee December 21, 2010, 1:08 pm

Give me some white chocolates on MY oatmeal babayy! Yummmmm!!!
I dont get that many spam…but I hear ya.
    especially about the subscription thing.

  • J. December 21, 2010, 1:24 pm

    Hi Caitlin,
Question about managing blog reading. I find I gather a lot from some blogs. Other blogs I just like to read for entertainment, etc. But its almost overwhelming with how many there are and the number of posts. How do you balance blog reading (how many are on your google reader)? I might start a blog soon – but I feel it will be a lot of time spent trying to make posts..and interact with other bloggers.
I know some bloggers check blogs all day while at work. I wish – that would certainly ease the time factor. But I can’t do that…thoughts on how to balance blog reading so it doesn’t become all-consuming?

  • Michele @ Healthy Cultivations December 21, 2010, 1:30 pm

Trying to remove the “digital clutter” is a wonderful thing. I try to put some fairly rigid boundaries on where and when I do blog reading, commenting, etc. And waking up to a lot of things I just delete before reading is ridiculous. You’ll feel so much better once you stop receiving all of those things.

  • Emily December 21, 2010, 1:38 pm

Love the oat pictures, looks great! I am in the middle of de-cluttering my email, too. I used to have a boring desk job where I actually enjoyed all of those emails but now they are just a frustration and bogging me down

  • Lacey @ Lake Life December 21, 2010, 2:41 pm

I’ve been simply blocking senders instead of unsubscribing to email lists. It takes a lot less time. (Ok maybe not a LOT less, but a little).

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin December 21, 2010, 2:49 pm

I hate getting so many emails everyday, but I kind of like being on store mailing lists so that I can get notified of all the sales! Plus sometimes people on the mailing lists get emailed special coupons! 😀

  • Stephanie December 21, 2010, 4:41 pm

I try to do that each time I receive an email that makes me think WTF? How did I get on that list? But it’s so much easier to press delete… 🙂

  • Kim @ Kim Lives Healthy December 21, 2010, 5:48 pm

I just did the unsubscribe thing too – so many things from hotels & airlines – most of my emails were spam!

  • Gigi December 21, 2010, 6:15 pm

Same here. I did the exact same thing a while ago, but some of them keep on sending me the spam emails every daily. A few websites even send me two or three emails a day. It’s so annoying.

  • Tina December 21, 2010, 9:00 pm

I second that! I would rather wash the dishes by hand then put them away!!

  • Wei-Wei December 22, 2010, 4:00 am

Clearing my inbox of spam is probably the most therapeutical thing I’ve done, ever.
