Spent some time this afternoon reading some Walt Whitman.

How I feel about blogging:

And they say poetry doesn’t apply to modern life!  We all go through the same stuff – why shouldn’t we share our experiences?  It helps me anyway.

Mid-morning, I snuck into Starbucks and grabbed a special treat:

I debated between a Pumpkin Spice Latte and a Pumpkin Scone (getting both at 11 AM + before lunch seemed a little much) and finally decided on the Scone + Iced Tea.  Mmm. It was perfect.

Lunch was a family effort:

Frozen spinach and mushroom pizza:

And a green salad:

I’ve got to run my sister-in-law to the airport… in Orlando… which is 1.5 hours away.  So I’ll be back later and am committed to squeezing in a long run!  I’ve even marked it in my calendar.  It’s like an appointment that I refuse to miss.

  • Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday September 27, 2010, 1:35 pm

Is that scone covered in frosting? Or what is that?

    • sarah k. @ the pajama chef September 27, 2010, 7:37 pm

Yeah, it’s frosting… almost a thick glaze. It’s really sweet. Good, but sweet. 🙂 I’d agree with Caitlin- a PSL & the scone is alot of sweet & a lot of pumpkin. I did it a few weeks ago… it was good but just a little too much I think.

  • Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) September 27, 2010, 1:35 pm

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg September 27, 2010, 1:40 pm

  • Keri September 27, 2010, 1:58 pm

The English major in me jumped for joy at the sight of Walt Whitman! Now THAT’S some good reading.

And because you got the scone now just means you can get the pumpkin spice latte later. Heehee. 😀

    that scone looks so good!

  • Liz September 27, 2010, 2:23 pm

I love Whitman. I took an entire Whitman class in college.
Here’s one of my favorite quotes:
    Be curious, not judgmental
And your very flesh shall be a great poem.
I exist as I am, that is enough.
    Walt Whitman

    • Caitlin September 27, 2010, 10:25 pm

      i love that

  • Michelle September 27, 2010, 2:28 pm

At first glance, I thought the Whitman tome was a giant chunk of chocolate! 😀 (Love the poem.)

  • Shanna, like Banana September 27, 2010, 2:37 pm

Good ol’ Walt 😉 I love poetry and also love finding the ways that it is timeless!

I still have not had my pumpkin scone of the season…eeek!

  • Brittany September 27, 2010, 2:41 pm

I’m impressed with your restraint… I might have gone overboard with all the pumpkin options 🙂

  • Holly @ couchpotatoathlete September 27, 2010, 2:50 pm

That scone looks unbelievable. I thought that was a pic of an iced latte and I was waiting to read “I couldn’t decide on which one to get so I got both” 🙂

    Drive safely!

  • Erin September 27, 2010, 2:51 pm

Aren’t the scones gooood? I actually love Starbucks pumpkin loaf, too, but try to only get it once a season. I make a pretty awesome pumpkin bread, if I do say so myself. 😉

  • Stacey (The Habit of Healthy) September 27, 2010, 2:57 pm

Your food looks fab. I love that you schedule your runs as an appointment, I think that is such a genuis idea!

  • Petite Yogini September 27, 2010, 3:10 pm

Everyone’s talking about those pumpkin spiced lattes. That scone makes me want to jump in the car and drive the 1 hour it would take for me to get one!

  • Angela (Oh She Glows) September 27, 2010, 3:18 pm

Gosh I love poetry. Its so beautiful, almost like meditation isn’t it?

THANK YOU for mentioning that run. I have been in such a slump since I got back but now I vow to get out there and sweat today.

  • Teacherwoman September 27, 2010, 3:22 pm

That scone looks delicious! Yum yum!

  • Michelle @ IronDivas September 27, 2010, 3:40 pm

The scone looks fantastic. I hope you get everything done that you want to.

  • Maren September 27, 2010, 3:46 pm

  • Bobbie September 27, 2010, 4:20 pm

Thanks for the surprise poetry! I am a Walt Whitman fan myself…he is from Jersey, very close to where I live and grew-up! Hope all is well with your family.

  • Amy September 27, 2010, 4:40 pm

I totally agree with putting appointments for workouts and runs on your calendar – that’s your commitment to yourself. You’d keep the appointment if it were with someone else, right? We need to treat ourselves with as much respect as we do others.

  • Shannon @ Freshman Yr of Life September 27, 2010, 5:01 pm

Weird, I was just contemplating that same decision in my head!

  • Food & Other Things September 27, 2010, 5:02 pm

I got the pumpkin scone the other night when I was at Starbucks…so perfect for fall!

  • Melissa September 27, 2010, 5:06 pm

Your scone looks delish! I had a pumpkin spice latte this weekend and it just wasn’t as special as usual, but I must try the scone one day! And I like the poetry.

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) September 27, 2010, 6:21 pm

    oh that pizza looks wonderful!

  • Charlie September 27, 2010, 6:36 pm

    I love Starbucks’ pumpkin scones!

  • Stacey September 27, 2010, 6:46 pm

I agree! I like putting my life and thoughts out there for the world to see 🙂 hope you have a good run and the weather is kind to you (it’s raining cats and dogs in Charlotte!) 🙂

  • Rachael September 27, 2010, 6:48 pm

It’s not everyday you get a Walt Whitman appearance in the blogworld. On behalf of transcendental appreciationists (new word!) everywhere, thanks!
    Good luck on PFB!

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing September 27, 2010, 7:26 pm

That reminds me.. I haven’t had one of their pumpkin scones this year!!! Must fix that….

  • chelsey @ clean eating chelsey September 27, 2010, 9:33 pm

I remember high school junior english learning about Walt Whitman and Henry David Thoreau. We took a walk through the woods and had to also write down our observations, thoughts, etc. It was such a great experience!

  • Sarah September 28, 2010, 8:18 am

Just saw your tweet about the calorie count in the scone…any chance you’d be interested in coming up with a lower-calorie knockoff recipe?

    • Caitlin September 28, 2010, 8:40 am

I think I need to try because DAMN it was good. Pretty insane that it was worth an entire meal’s calories. As I said in the tweet, I don’t count calories but I don’t really want to consume an entire meal of sugar and butter at 11 AM. 🙂 We need a better, just-as-pumpkiny alternative!

  • Halley (Blunder Construction) September 28, 2010, 5:39 pm

Nothing like a little light reading! That is one hefty book, and ever heftier contents! Bravo

  • Katy September 28, 2010, 11:26 pm

I love Walt Whitman. When I was in second grade I memorized “Oh Captain, My Captain” and I can still recite it to this day! 🙂

  • Jennifer (keepitsimplefoods) September 30, 2010, 9:22 am

I LOVE that pumpkin scone, but I looked up the calorie count the other day and it has something like 480 calories- practically a meal on its own. But, everyone deserves a treat on occasion. This weekend I’m going to try and make a lighter version. Will share the recipe very soon!

    • Jen @ keepitsimplefoods October 8, 2010, 3:33 pm

I’ve posted a healthified version of the Starbux pumpkin scone on my site. Please check it out!
