British Open Party

in All Posts

I don’t know what happened today, but suddenly, I feel like I turned a major corner in my running!  This morning’s run was a fast negative split, and it felt great.

Here’s my statistics:

  • Duration: 57:57
  • Distance: 6.25 miles
  • Mile 1: 9:41
  • Mile 2: 9:20
  • Mile 3: 9:33
  • Mile 4: 9:08
  • Mile 5: 9:00
  • Mile 6: 9:18
  • Mile 6 – 6.25: 1:57 (a 7:54 pace)

I haven’t fueled up mid-run in a long run in a long time (I usually fuel over 7 miles), but I was feeling pretty hungry before I even left the house.  I took half the goo packet around Mile 3 and could definitely feel the energy boost from the glucose.

I jumped into the shower because I only have 40 minutes to get ready for our party!  We invited Nate + Kate and Matt + Kath over to watch the British Open.

Our modular couch came in handy!  We arranged it so everyone could sit and see the TV.  We served a buffet-style lunch off the kitchen countertop.  We still need bar stools, but it worked!

The Husband made appetizers of hummus and cucumber slices.

It was really light and refreshing – a perfect summer starter!

My serving from the buffet:

I had a whole wheat wrap with a veggie burger, fruit salad, a regular salad, and chips + salsa.  I went back for doubles of the fruit.

I’m quite tired from last night + the run + the party!   We’re going to take a walk around the neighborhood, and hopefully it will wake me up a bit.

Anyone else experiencing a sudden burst of energy in their workouts?  Isn’t it nice?

I had one today too! Last wednesday I ran a horrible 7miles, but I did 7 again today and it went swimmingly! Must be something in the air 🙂

  • Heather (Heather's Dish) July 18, 2010, 5:03 pm

i definitely am…i feel like it must be the summer and the need to get outside! i adore getting out and running…so fun 🙂

  • Tina July 18, 2010, 5:05 pm

Woohoo for the run! And a good time with great friends.

I know I felt an extra energy and exercise burst once I got out of the dreaded first trimester of pregnancy. I have been thrilled to be back in the gym regularly.

  • Dynamics July 18, 2010, 5:10 pm

Yes! It feels great. I made it half way up my mountain WITHOUT stopping and I never felt out of breath. The legs were quivering and made me stop. I will conquer this mountain!

I have been training for half marathons all summer, and have been getting a bit tired of my weekend long runs. Today I split up my long run between a 10K race and another run early afternoon. It made it a lot more palatabale to handle 11 miles, and speedier too!

Also, I have found in the past that making sure you have the right shoes/ insoles is important too. As soon as I put in some insoles to correct a gait issue/foot pain , my speed increased about 15s/mile without any added effort.

Your place looks great, Caitlin! Just hoping your pretty, light-colored couch doesn’t get too destroyed from food blogging ; )

I’d be tired if I were you too!!

  • Dorry July 18, 2010, 5:20 pm

I ran my fastest 5K last week but now I need to work on mentally getting over the 3 mile mark! It’s hard in the heat but my goal is to run 6 in the next 3 weeks. 🙂

  • Rosey Rebecca July 18, 2010, 5:21 pm

Love the last picture! I also love your kitchen. So cute! I can’t wait to be able to run that far. You inspire me. 🙂

  • Camille July 18, 2010, 5:30 pm

    Congrats on a great run!

  • Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) July 18, 2010, 5:31 pm

Good job on the run! Yes!!! I love that high you get! It really makes you feel good. Looks like you had a great afternoon too. Enjoy the rest of your day!

  • Anya @ Fitness & Sunshine July 18, 2010, 5:34 pm

I love bursts of energy. They usually carry along with them a burst of confidence. 😉

  • Julie @ Pickley Pear July 18, 2010, 5:41 pm

I’m hoping for a burst of energy tomorrow when it’s *cooler* and rainy on my run!

I noticed your Goo from Hammer Nutrition – a lady at Bikram was telling me about Hammer Nutrition just yesterday and I went on the site and bought all sorts of stuff!

I am not a Goo person though, it makes my tummy upset, but I did buy Electrolyte capsules to take before workouts. Can’t wait to try them!!

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) July 18, 2010, 5:48 pm

Yay for an awesome run!!! I LOVE when everything comes together and you have a great run!

  • Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ July 18, 2010, 5:49 pm

Love veggie burger wraps so yum. That appetizer looks good, great idea.

  • Nicole of Raspberry Stethoscope July 18, 2010, 6:00 pm

Yes! I wrote about it today!! It is wonderful.

  • kelsey@snackingsquirrel.com July 18, 2010, 6:00 pm

its that second wind, thats what i call it. it feels empowering!!!!

the party looked like a hoot btw! nice little gathering <3

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing July 18, 2010, 6:08 pm

How much fun! And I loooove getting a second wind.. I think fueling mid run really helps that.

  • Jessica @ Jessica Balances July 18, 2010, 6:45 pm

Congrats on such a great run! You’re so speedy! 🙂 So glad the couch is coming in handy with guests!

  • Erin July 18, 2010, 6:46 pm

Awesome job! Looks like a fun (and relaxing) afternoon, too. The best kind! 🙂

  • Amy @ Amy Starts To Run July 18, 2010, 6:51 pm

Your apartment looks adorable, and you’ve got me thinking about a modular couch.

BTW, I’m still waiting for the run where I get a second wind 😉

  • sarah (the SHU box) July 18, 2010, 7:24 pm

TOTALLY impressed that you are entertaining already — you two got the house in order so amazingly fast, and it looks great! looks like a totally fun day.

  • Lisa July 18, 2010, 7:35 pm

Well done, you beat my best by a exactly one minute. Although right now I am five minutes behind you…having lots of fun though working my way back there! BTW that jam looks SO good!

  • Dominique July 18, 2010, 7:37 pm

Your afternoon was much more delightful than mine. I had to go into work for what was supposed to be two hours but it ended up being 20 minutes and then I had no ride home. I didn’t want to waste the money on a taxi so I walked the 40 minutes to get home in some pretty humid weather. Not fun.

Your food photos have inspired me to make a roast veggie burger and fruit salad for dinner. Thanks!

  • Jessica @ How Sweet It Is July 18, 2010, 7:38 pm

I love bursts of energy in my workouts – they give me the motivation to keep going and going!

  • Jill@MySoCalledHealthLife July 18, 2010, 7:41 pm

I LOVE when that happens. I feel like I notice it a lot when I’m at a class. If it’s a good teacher, he/she can really get you going when you feel like you can’t give anymore!

  • Samantha @ Health, Happiness & Skinny Jeans July 18, 2010, 8:12 pm

My last few runs ended with a surprising sprint towards the “finish line”. I don’t know where I got the energy (I felt spent) but it was like I drove over a chevron in Mario Kart or something 🙂

  • Heather July 18, 2010, 8:38 pm

great job on the run! the get together looks fun!

  • Anna @ Doing Good & Living Well July 18, 2010, 9:16 pm

Your fruit salad from the “buffet” is making my mouth water over here. Congrats on the negative splits too!

  • Janna @ Janna's Keeping it Real July 18, 2010, 11:02 pm

I have to ask…how was the Orange HG?
I can’t do Gu. It messes with the stomach like you wouldn’t believe, but i recently ventured into the HG realm and really like them thus far! I’ve had apple cinnamon (lovem it’s like apple pie!), raspberry (like) and banana (dislike) but i want to shake it up a bit and test the waters with new flavors. Have any recommendations?

    • caitlin July 19, 2010, 10:54 am

It was alright. I think they all kind of taste the same so perhaps I’m not the best person to recommend them 🙂

  • Jennifer July 18, 2010, 11:59 pm

Great running speed today! Your time is awesome.
I just finished the first week of my 1/2 marathon training plan and I have not hit my stride (so to speak) yet. I am trying to not get discouraged because my times are slower than I would like. I am sure at some point in the future I will get one of those “great runs.”

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) July 19, 2010, 12:41 am

I am doing the 30 Day Shred, and have definitely felt a burst of energy in the last few days … not sure why, but I will take it!

  • Susan July 19, 2010, 1:29 am

Wow you are speedy! It took me 5 minutes longer to do a 5 miler today.

  • Stacey @ Tipping the (Kitchen!) Scales July 19, 2010, 6:42 am

Nah, my last run was awful – my legs just didn’t want to move! Glad you rrun was good though, it feels great when it all just seems to flow!

  • Wei-Wei July 19, 2010, 9:18 am

I ellipticalled for the first time two days ago, and I thought it was so hard! My thoughts sort of started drifting towards the blogland, and suddenly I found myself pedalling like a crazy person on my intervals! 😀

    Wei-Wei

PS: Your negative splits are amazing, and so are your nails 😉

    • caitlin July 19, 2010, 10:54 am

I love dark nail polish! so funky 😉 thanks.

  • Laurie July 19, 2010, 9:40 am

Every once in a while I’ll get a ‘burst’ of energy! But working does make me feel better! Maggie and James are so friendly with your friends! Love the last picture of Maggie and your friend.
