Little Fears

Have I mentioned that James is deathly afraid of the grate in the sidewalk?

IMG_0418

IMG_0420

He comes to a full stop 20 feet before the grate and REFUSES to budge until I make a big loop around the grate.  It makes walking him very awkward because there’s a grate every 100 feet or so!  And I have no idea where this weird, intense phobia came from.  He didn’t do it three weeks ago! And there’s been no “incidents” with grates that I know of!

Onwards…

Breakfast featured a Green Monster:

  • 2 cups of raw spinach
  • 1 cup rice milk
  • 1 mini bananas
  • 1 tablespoon Vega smoothie mix

This stuff is amazing in Green Monsters!

And I had an Arnold Sandwich Thin with a smear of Naturally Nutty Cinnamon Peanut Butter which Kath gave me when I was up in Charlotte.  I loved the big hunks of cherry!

Do you have any unique phobias?  I have a thing about flying and have to kiss the airplane before I get on (I kiss my hand and then touch it to the plane), but I guess that’s more of a superstition.

That peanut butter with huge chunks of cherries looks AWESOME. I haven’t had a GM in ages.. craving one now.

I don’t really have any weird phobias, but I do get super scared before I try new things. The first day I was going to go to Bikram, I started freaking out and actually turned white while I was thinking about it because I was so scared. The good part about that is it didn’t end up being nearly as bad as I was expecting and now I’m addicted!

    • Becca June 10, 2010, 10:15 am

Oh bless you – I actually burst into tears in the middle of my first Bikram session… So embarrassing…

  • Freya @ Brit Chick Runs June 10, 2010, 10:01 am

Oh what a cute phobia! My horse has an intense fear of prams, and clumps of grass! Or bits of different couloured grass…weird.
My fears are so dull – just spiders and deep sea water 😛

  • Janie June 10, 2010, 10:04 am

Doggy Charlie will NOT walk over the subway grates on the sidewalks in Manhattan. No matter how crowded the street is or how badly he has to go to the bathroom, he will walk the perimeter until the grates have disappeared. And there are a lot of grates in Manhattan 🙂

    xo

    • Shellybean June 10, 2010, 10:51 am

One of my dogs is scared of garbage cans!

  • Heather (Heather's Dish) June 10, 2010, 10:08 am

oh james! how funny! i don’t know if it’s a phobia or not, but i can’t have anything plugged in when i leave the house, and it makes me nervous to leave lights on…i always breathe a sigh of relief when we pull back up to the house and see it’s not on fire! i’m weird, i know…

    • Sarah for Real June 10, 2010, 11:23 am

Not so weird! I suppose it’s not a phobia of mine but more of a paranoia. I worry about candles left on or if the bathroom fan is on while we are gone (they cause many house fires). We keep our dog locked in the house so I think that contributes to my paranoia of a house fire.

      • alli June 10, 2010, 3:00 pm

yep- same here. i’ve been almost halfway to work and i cant remember if i turned my straightner off. im scared of coming home to a house fire.
funny thing, i have always remembered to turn it off when i think i didnt, but ive come home from church and it’s been on when it didn’t even cross my mind that i could have left it on!

        • Samantha @ Health, Happiness & Skinny Jeans June 10, 2010, 3:28 pm

Me too! My straightner causes me a lot of paranoia. I have even asked myself if it was off when I was leaving for the train station and it was in my darn suitcase!! Eeek!

  • Cassie @ A Very Busy Mind June 10, 2010, 10:11 am

I have a clown phobia. I think my dad passed it on to me. They freak me OUT!

  • Amy B @ Second City Randomness June 10, 2010, 10:11 am

I’m not a fan of the grates in the road either. I trace it back to when I watched Stephen King’s “It” at a sleepover and a kid gets pulled into one by an evil clown. Has James been watching scary movies past his bedtime??? 😉

    • Emily June 10, 2010, 10:30 am

That’s what I’m thinking! Pennywise is trying to lure James in there with one of his toys. Stay away! 🙂

      • Nikky June 10, 2010, 2:16 pm

That’s the first thing I thought of too! In Jr. High I had to walk 3 long blocks to my bus stop, and since it was still dark outside and I was the only kid coming from my direction I was all alone. I crossed the street to avoid the grates too. And I cut through the neighbors yard to avoid passing the big, old church with the red fire lights in the basement. Creepy.

  • Olivia @ Blissful Runner June 10, 2010, 10:12 am

My best friend is afraid of drainage grates (she’s terrified of falling in), but with James that’s probably not it. I’ve seen racoons and opossums crawl in and out of them before so maybe a family moved in down there? I bet he could smell it if that was the case! As for my feats? Propellars! On boats, planes or hellicopters – keep them away from me!!

  • Bethany Herrington June 10, 2010, 10:13 am

That’s funny….I can definitely relate! My dog has the same exact intense fear of gutters….we don’t have grates in our neighborhood, but instead the gutters that excess water drains into at the edge of the roads. She stops and makes us take a huge detour around the gutter….and in our neighborhood they are about every 100 feet too. Makes for an interesting walk.

  • Megan @ The Daily Sweat June 10, 2010, 10:13 am

I have a weird thing about walking in grass, especially wet grass. It’s worst when I’m barefoot, but still avoid it even if I have shoes on. The feeling of grass between my toes grosses me out! Weird huh? Is that considered a phobia?

  • Becca June 10, 2010, 10:14 am

I don’t have any phobias, because all my fears are rational *haha* but I do understand James’s fear. I got a high heel trapped down a grate once, and broke a bone in my foot wrenching it out!

  • Marissa June 10, 2010, 10:15 am

My dog has the same deal with sewage drains! Its so weird. He stops just like that and refuses to move, until eventually making a break for it at a dead sprint as far away from it as possible!

  • Robyn @ Frugal 'n' Fit! June 10, 2010, 10:16 am

My cat is afraid of black socks! I think he thinks they are rodents. I tell him that he is the boss of rodents (and black socks!), but does he listen to me?

  • Jenn @ LiveWellFitNow June 10, 2010, 10:16 am

Yummo cherry PB! The things you can buy nowadays…I tell ya!

My weird phobia or “issue” if you will is ice. Can’t touch it, it just makes me cringe. Can’t think about it, can barely ice skate. But I love having ice in ALL of my drinks so it is an odd tug of war over here. 🙂

  • Katrina June 10, 2010, 10:17 am

ayiyi My dog max does the same thing but its with manhole covers too! If you figure out how to get him over that fear let me know! lol

  • Caitlin in MD June 10, 2010, 10:18 am

Dogs are sooooo funny! I love hearing stories about yours, keep it up 🙂

  • Wei-Wei June 10, 2010, 10:18 am

The grate can be intimidating… Especially if he walked over one and there was the sound of rushing water underneath? Strange. I’m scared of the usual stuff – creepy crawlies, zombies, blood, and… clowns. I don’t like clowns. Even happy clowns scare me.

    Wei-Wei

  • Lynne June 10, 2010, 10:19 am

Oh, poor James! My dog is sometimes that way with grates, but not always… I always have to be on my guard with him, though, as for no apparent reason (to me), something will freak him out, and he’ll try to pull into the road to get away from it. As he’s a strong Collie-cross, I need to have a good grip on his lead! 🙂

  • Erika June 10, 2010, 10:27 am

My oldest pup Coty (she’ll be 12 this year) also has amajor phobia with grates….it all started when she was 8 weeks old and I took her on a walk. I stepped on a water drain/metal grate and it was a little loose so it made a noise which startled her. To this day she refuses to walk near them….hard to beleive something that happened so long ago affects her still….funny, but not funny I guess….

  • Nanette Mills June 10, 2010, 10:27 am

I share James’s fear of grates. My leg fell through one as a kid and I still avoid them as much as possible. I also fear people looking in windows (car windows, house windows) at me.

  • EmmyLou June 10, 2010, 10:30 am

It’s not really unique but GERMS. I am a crazy germaphobe. A more unique one might be that I have a fear of being shot! :O…for a while it was almost debilitating- but I have gotten it a little more under control! xo

  • Danielle (Runs on Green) June 10, 2010, 10:30 am

I used to have a phobia where I held my breath every time I passed a cemetary. But now I run by cemetaries so that’s not an option unless I want to join them (morbid humor, sorry)!

  • ~Jessica~ June 10, 2010, 10:33 am

Perhaps James has been reading ‘It’ by Stephen King? 😉

My biggest phobia is flying…and people. Seriously, I have panic attacks in crowds and it’s really pathetic and irritating.

    That GM looks divine!

  • Rachel June 10, 2010, 10:35 am

I am DEATHLY afraid of meteors. There was a time once when I saw that I thought to be a world-ending fireball flying through the sky while I was driving. I slammed on my breaks in the middle of an intersection and started screaming.

The fireball went out before it hit the ground. I guess it was a small one that burned up in the atmosphere.

But it looked HUGE to me and ever since then, I’ve had a serious issue with them. I know what all of the “threatening” ones are in outerspace, and the odds of each one colliding with Earth.

I know its totaly unreasonable, but I also don’t understand how more people aren’t afraid!

People tell me that they are terrified of tornados and things like that, but you they are so localized. If you see one in the distance, you can just drive the other way.

    No so with a meteor!

    Okay I’ll stop now.

  • Lindsay @ Summit Sandwiches June 10, 2010, 10:35 am

This isn’t exactly a “phobia”, but I have a strong aversion to fruit stickers! Lol. I just think they’re so disgusting for some reason. Maybe it’s because they’re so flimsy?

  • Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman June 10, 2010, 10:36 am

I wouldn’t call my phobias little or weird–at least not for a girl. I’m horribly afraid of cockroaches and mice. (And some other bugs and rodents in there.)

  • Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday June 10, 2010, 10:38 am

My dog is deathly afraid of the vacuum and the ironing board. I think she’s just afraid of housework! haha

    • Jessie June 10, 2010, 6:44 pm

my dog too!! She actually runs and hides in the other room if she even hears the door open to the closet where we keep the vacuum.

  • Miranda @ Mirandasjeans June 10, 2010, 10:38 am

Unique – no – spiders. Scaries movie ever Arachnophobia

Unique/outlandish- yes – I fear having to live in a trailer park (sorry not meant to offend anyone), beacuse I’m scared of aliens. And generally people who claim abduction are from that type of socioeconomical area. Second scaries movie ever Fire in the Sky.

Saw both of these movies when I was young. Scared forever!

    • Jessica June 10, 2010, 12:05 pm

Is Fire in the Sky that movie that’s based on a “true story” where the guy gets abducted by aliens in the middle of the woods (he was some sort of tree logger or something)and they put stuff in his eyes and do all these weird experiments on him, then drop him off naked? If it is, then I’m totall with you- I saw that when I was probably 9/10, and it was SCARY!!

      • Miranda @ Mirandasjeans June 10, 2010, 12:12 pm

That’s the one. I hate the scene when he’s in the ship and he’s in that cacoon thing with the goo like in Matrix and he floats into another cacoon with someone else in it. Scary!

  • Jessica @ How Sweet June 10, 2010, 10:39 am

I am so afraid of heights! Not uncommon, but I’m even afraid on escalators!

  • Amber K @ sparkpeople June 10, 2010, 10:41 am

I get nervous and scared in social situations. They make me incredibly anxious that I will do or say the wrong and often times I will just skip things altogether rather than have to deal with the awkwardness.

  • Jessie June 10, 2010, 10:41 am

So funny about James & the grate… A few weeks ago, one of our dogs developed a phobia of our front porch. That was a pain. We had to pick him up and carry him inside after every walk! No scary incidences with the porch before then! It (luckily) only lasted a week.

  • Kristina June 10, 2010, 10:43 am

sweet pup… my dachshund has a few quirky fears, but he is a rescue pup so he has an unknown past… 🙁

I have an insane fear of spiders. I mean BAD. But that may seem normal… I also have a fear of contained water… like those big tanks? water cooling whatevers? we have a swim pool, so not like that, but big. no idea why…

that pb looks so yum 🙂

  • Ashley June 10, 2010, 10:44 am

Awww, poor James! One of my dogs growing up was exactly like that and she made it a point to make a huge semi-circle path around the sewers/grates. I’ve heard that dogs don’t really have depth perception, so who knows?

  • Marina June 10, 2010, 10:47 am

I am really claustrophobic. I hate elevators and I always avoid them. Brr.

  • Kelly June 10, 2010, 10:47 am

I’m afraid of snakes, like even talking about them makes me uncomfortable.

  • giordin June 10, 2010, 10:49 am

that’s funny! i was afraid of grates when i was little.

i do have some off phobias now too. mustard, the ocean (the waves, not the sharks), and revolving doors. you don’t know me so i can admit that…haha!

  • Katherine June 10, 2010, 10:52 am

My dog is afraid of sports/exercise! Whenever someone takes out a baseball glove, a basketball, golf clubs, etc…he barks like a madman. If you make a swinging motion (like swinging a baseball bat, for example) he goes nuts and bites your pant leg. He also freaks out if you do sit ups or push ups in front of him. My huge yoga ball puts him over the edge. It’s SO weird and I have no clue where it comes from. It’s even more comical because he is a 9 pound toy poodle, so you can imagine that his bark is not very intimidating.

  • Becca June 10, 2010, 10:52 am

I’m actually right there with James. I will not walk on grates. Ever.

  • Bevin June 10, 2010, 10:53 am

I have a huge phobia of mustard. And pennies. They just tooootally gross me out for no reason!

  • Anne June 10, 2010, 10:54 am

I have a thing with down escalators. I always have to pause and get my bearings before stepping on them. The taller they are, the worse it is.

Our little puppy was afraid of a bag of garbage the other day. She’s pretty fearless, so it was funny.

  • Lex @ sweettoothlex June 10, 2010, 10:58 am

I am scared of dark water but not sure where it comes from – I could never go swimming in a lake at night. In Edmonton (Canada) at West Edmonton Mall there’s water where the Submarines go (yes in the mall lol) and when I partied at the mall at night (there are clubs in the mall also lol) I would always have to look the opposite way from the water. Heebie jeebies!

I recently discovered the SMELL of my facemask terrifies my kitty! He goes big eyed, ears back, fur puffed, so still when he smells the mask. I have no idea where that would come from?????

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing June 10, 2010, 10:59 am

That’s so strange about James!!! Who knows… one of my cats is afraid of going outside while the other tries to escape every chance he gets.

  • Lindsay June 10, 2010, 11:03 am

My dog does the same thing! She won’t walk over any grates. It can be embarassing!

  • Kristina June 10, 2010, 11:07 am

My Shepherd mix Cosmo also has a fear of grates…not to the extent of poor James, though. We’ll be walking, and he’ll either jump over them or try to walk around me to get away from them! Silly dogs…

  • Maria June 10, 2010, 11:09 am

I’m weirdly terrified of men being outside windows. I’ve had panic attacks about it before when there’s not even been anyone there. Pretty intense, and no reason to it!

  • Summer June 10, 2010, 11:13 am

Animals are funny like that…my cat is TERRIFIED of the air conditioning vent (it’s really big) that is on the wall of the hallway leading to my parents’ kitchen. He’ll approach it slowly…then runrunrun into the kitchen.

  • Michelle June 10, 2010, 11:13 am

I am afraid of public restrooms! Not the cleanliness issue… I swear I was taken from one in a past life. Sometimes, I will walk in and back right out of one sometimes, because I get the worst anxiety about being in them. All my friends know when we go to the movies that I can’t go to the bathroom alone. SO weird…

  • Jenna (Hello, I Love You) June 10, 2010, 11:18 am

Awww James! I don’t have any phobias really other than clowns freaking me out!

  • shelby @ eatdrinkrun June 10, 2010, 11:20 am

I’m scared of flushing toilets. The idea of an overflowing toilet literally makes my hands sweat. It’s weird!

  • Brie (The Fit Bride) June 10, 2010, 11:23 am

I am seriously afraid of ketchup.

When I was little, kids would shoot ketchup packets at me at lunch because they thought I was weird for not liking it. To this day, ketchup packets make me sweat. Some forms of ketchup are okay–ketchup on a hot dog is the worst, and from packets is bad, but I am more okay with it when it comes from a glass bottle. My husband makes fun of me all the time for it.

  • MelissaNibbles June 10, 2010, 11:23 am

That’s funny. I kiss my hand and smack the flight attendants before I get on the plane!

  • Kelly @ Healthy Living With Kelly June 10, 2010, 11:24 am

Cinnamon Cherry PB…that sounds really good. I am clastrophobic. I can not stand to be in a space where I don’t see or have an immediate exit. It can sometimes makes social functions hard because I hate to be in an enclosed crowded space, like a bar or a club, because I freak out!

  • Bethany (Not Unless I'm Being Chased) June 10, 2010, 11:25 am

Oh my gosh! My dog does that, too! Ruby is terrified of grates and manholes. Since she’s a shelter dog, we don’t really know her background. I always imagine she was swept down a drain in a freak rain storm as a puppy (dramatic, eh?). I’m sure it’s something more simple than that.
If you ever figure out a way to get him to walk across it, please share. I have to have awkward, grate-avoiding walks, too. 🙁

  • Julie @savvyeats June 10, 2010, 11:26 am

Escalators freak me out a little bit. I will still use them, but I am super careful about stepping onto them. At a dance competition in elementary school, someone got their foot caught in the space between the steps, and it terrified me! Plus, I have nightmares about really tall escalators… yeesh!

  • Helen June 10, 2010, 11:27 am

Awww bless James. I wonder what has suddenly brought that on?? No really weird phobias that I can think of……the worst prob has to be touching the bath plughole! I hate the idea of wet smelly hair touching me!

  • Rachel @ Suburban Yogini June 10, 2010, 11:27 am

I do not blame James at all. I bet he has read Stephen King’s It… anyone who has read that is scared of the grates…

Me, I’m scared of slug. Seriously. They make me shiver. Yuk!

Also toilet brushes freak me out. Don’t judge 😉

  • Nicole of Raspberry Stethoscope June 10, 2010, 11:29 am

My boyfriend and I both hate styrofoam. The sound it makes, the way it feels, *shudder*. I wouldn’t call that a phobia, but we both squirm when there’s a package with little styrofoam popcorn things.
As for me, I am afraid of the water…the things…in the water…!@#$@$%

  • maren June 10, 2010, 11:30 am

My puggle Zeus is so scared of the grates too! He will not walk on them, and has not for as long as I can remember! Comes to a screeching halt, and has to walk around them. I can’t think of any incidents or reasons why though. Strange

  • Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter June 10, 2010, 11:30 am

I just bought that smoothie mix! I’m glad to know that it is Caitlin approved.

I have a fear of pasta-roni’s. Last fall I used to eat them all of the time. I was so sick the entire time from them. Oi.

  • Maura June 10, 2010, 11:38 am

  • Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine June 10, 2010, 11:39 am

So funny about James…dogs have the weirdest fears! My old lab used to FREAK OUT at a little lab statue we had in our kitchen. We had to move it into a room we didn’t let him go into!

I am soooo creeped out by watching people’s heads being shaved. I have no idea why. The Britney Spears incident? It literally gave me nightmares, as did watching V for Vendetta. Even typing about it is weirding me out!!

Hope you have a wonderful day!

  • Heather @ Side of Sneakers June 10, 2010, 11:39 am

I have a fear that I will be belting my lungs out in the car singing & then I’ll butt-dial someone and they’ll hear me. I am NOT a good singer. They’d likely stop being my friend 😉 haha.

  • Mary June 10, 2010, 11:52 am

I have an intense fear of heights. I need to sit on the aisle seat when I fly.

  • Amanda June 10, 2010, 11:54 am

Maybe he heard a noise come from a grate…. dogs have pretty good hearing!

  • Alexandra June 10, 2010, 11:57 am

I’m kind of afraid to shut my eyes while in the shower. I also have a fear of the slope in the road while running, ever since I hurt my ankle. Also this is kind of weird but I’m afraid of my shorts ripping while running. They don’t fit tight at all but I’m always scared of running with an exposed bum and not knowing it!

    Hi Caitlin!
I’m a new commenter (but faithful reader) – I had to comment because my puggle is deathly afraid of the grates and manhole covers on the streets too! Again, no idea where it came from. Completely odd!
Now, me, on the other hand, I’m terrified of the dark. Still, in my 30’s. 🙂

  • allison @ livingoneday June 10, 2010, 12:02 pm

i wouldnt say it’s a phobia, but i have issues sharing dairy with other people. i will not share a glass of milk or an ice cream cone or anything else creamy that will leave a residue. it makes me gag. i also have a phobia of not making enough food for people when i cook dinner! i also have a fear of being followed WHEREVER i go – im constantly looking over my shoulder when im walking alone at night.

    • Katherine June 10, 2010, 12:19 pm

I’m the same way! My friend doesn’t eat cheese, so she removes it from her pizza, and one time our other friend’s dad ATE the removed cheese off her plate. This happened in high school about 10 years ago and we still talk/gag about it. Gahhh

  • Amy @ Amy Starts To Run June 10, 2010, 12:07 pm

I have an odd quirk, not sure its a phobia. You know those ads on the floor of a grocery store? I will not step on them. If it’s right in front of something I need, I will lean over it or straddle it to grab my item. That and anything painted on the concrete, like handicapped parking spots.

  • Sydney June 10, 2010, 12:09 pm

This is my first time visiting your blog and I must say that your pup is absolutely precious! And yeah it’s always hard to figure out why dogs develop phobias like that… so weird. I highly recommend reading the books written by “the dog whisperer” (can’t remember his name, Carlos something?). Anywho, applying the principles of his books has completely changed my dog’s behavior (for the better) and has made our dog-human relationship soooo much better.

  • Abby June 10, 2010, 12:09 pm

I just had to share that my dog has the same sewer grate phobia thing. Maybe they know their paws are smaller than the gaps are wide or something. I don’t know where it came from either, unless as a puppy he was attacked by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I like to sleep facing the door, no matter where I’m sleeping.

  • Liz June 10, 2010, 12:17 pm

I am totally afraid of grates/sewer drains etc. I get uneasy when I walk by them. Totally not kidding.

    Here’s why: http://noheroicsplease.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/balloon1.jpg

Oh, & if you haven’t seen that movie? Don’t. (at least not if you have a clown phobia)

  • Tammy @ Defining Wellness June 10, 2010, 12:20 pm

I don’t know if this is unique, but I’m terrified of shots and needles . . . to the point where even when I’m instructed to get blood taken by the doctor, I won’t do it. This is a problem.

I used to be very phobic about riding in elevators, but I’ve been forced to get over that some since I work in downtown Chicago and taking the stairs to my office isn’t an option. (I’m only on the 11th floor, but the staircases are locked except in emergency situations.) I still get very anxious in elevators, but I’ll ride in them.

My other major phobia is kind of a weird one. I’m absolutely terrified by being pregnant and childbirth – like to the point where I actually don’t want to have children because I don’t want to be pregnant and give birth.

  • Caroline @ youngDCliving June 10, 2010, 12:37 pm

Aww poor James! It’s weird how the most random things can spook a dog totally out of the blue. My old dog became terrified of stairs after a few years…which is embarrassing, because she was a Bernese Mountain Dog, and you wouldn’t think a mountain dog would be scared of heights 🙂

  • Natalie (The Sweets Life) June 10, 2010, 12:37 pm

I can’t think of any weird fears I have now…used to have an irrational fear of choking. It made eating annoying!

    Your dogs are SO funny!

  • Becky June 10, 2010, 12:39 pm

my dog is really afraid of the halloween decorations. we have this styrofoam tombstone that makes a ghostly howling noise and she’s so unbelievably scared of it. We also used to have to sarcophagus mask that if we pointed in her direction she would go running into another room.

  • Becky June 10, 2010, 12:40 pm

she’s also currently barking at the stationary lawnmower in the garage, so i guess that is menancing her right now, too.

  • Rebecca @ How the Cookie's Crumble June 10, 2010, 12:40 pm

That’s super funny James is scared of grates. Maybe something traumatic happened while he was with the doggy sitter.

  • Courtney (Pancakes & Postcards) June 10, 2010, 12:43 pm

I saw a neighbor’s house burn down as a kid, and I was so scared of fire that I couldn’t light a MATCH or go near candles into my 20s! Totally phobic.

Then I joined the Peace Corps, though, and have to light my stove and candles with a match, so I got over it. It was hard though, and it took 22 years. Embarrassing!!!

  • Diana (Mymarblerye) June 10, 2010, 12:45 pm

i’m a dork and i’m still scared of the dark…

  • greenbean June 10, 2010, 12:46 pm

my dog does the same thing! she’s rescued from the streets so i’ll never know where it came from. but it’s so embarrassing at times. i look like such a mean pet owner that is dragging a dog that doesn’t appear to want to be near me!

  • Amanda (modernation) June 10, 2010, 12:58 pm

I am afraid of maple syrup. Can’t get near the stuff or have it in the house.

  • Kellie June 10, 2010, 1:06 pm

I have OCD so there are many phobias. It is so funny because my family doesn’t even notice them anymore, I guess it is just part of who I am.

  • Lisa June 10, 2010, 1:11 pm

I hate spiders with a passion!!!

  • Sana June 10, 2010, 1:14 pm

I am TERRIFIED of expired food. Strange I kno! I am worried that I will eat it w/o knowing!

  • Chase @ The Chase Project June 10, 2010, 1:15 pm

I have an honest to god phobia of vomit! (but not doggie throwup, weird!) I hate to throw up, I hate being near someone throwing up, I can’t see it or smell it without going into a panic attack. Unfortunately, it makes running races trecherous because there’s always someone!

    • Hilary June 10, 2010, 1:39 pm

I have the SAME problem!! flying, amusement parks, buses where someone could get carsick…and anything that could possibly involve throwing up gives me anxiety! It’s gotten a little better in college, (when I’m intoxicated, I can handle it slightly better) but I still have get anxiety quite often from this phobia. Maybe i’ll get over it when i have kids.

      • Chase @ The Chase Project June 10, 2010, 2:30 pm

Oh I am right there with ya with the amusment park, etc.! My boyfriend laughed at me after my last half-marathon… I saw someone bend over and I thought they were about to throw up and I RAN off! Turns out they were just tying their shoes! Oops! 🙂

  • Beth @ DiningAndDishing June 10, 2010, 1:26 pm

I have a bit of a horse phobia. Just that they are so big and so dumb…I don’t trust them! Funny though because my little sis is an avid horse enthusiast!

  • kalli@fitandfortysomething June 10, 2010, 1:26 pm

poor james! you know cesar millan would tell you to make him walk through it! easier said than done 🙂

  • Skyler Meine June 10, 2010, 1:29 pm

I have been reading about the Vega smoothie. I just don’t know if I can choke it down.

  • Emily June 10, 2010, 1:30 pm

That is so funny about the grate! My puppers has the same fear. We have to go in the middle of the street sometimes… He got his paw stuck when he was just a little pup tho so that explains that. I’m afraid of birds…

  • Run Sarah June 10, 2010, 1:33 pm

That naturally nutty PB looks amazing! Too funny about James – my pup has a phobia of weiner dogs in camo vests…he had a bad experience at the dog park!

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg June 10, 2010, 1:38 pm

That is so strange!!! For no reason at all?!? Eek– reminds me of the movie “It”!!! Shudder.

  • Annie@stronghealthyfit June 10, 2010, 1:46 pm

Flying makes me really uneasy, too. But my main fears are germs and chemicals. (I buy all non-toxic cleaners for home use).

  • Hedda June 10, 2010, 2:01 pm

Animals are like human : weird ones ^^

I fear height and to have my head under the water. And to not be able to touch the ground with my feet while out swimming. And pretty much everything in adventure parks. Roller coasters = shiver.
I used to have a lot of fears, but they are all gradually loosing their strength as I discover it was not that much to fear than fear itself.
I know my fear of food will be a temporary one, as I am willing to continue challenging myself.
Challenging myself when it comes to heights though? Nah, not interested, I like it here on the ground ;P

  • Emily June 10, 2010, 2:13 pm

I am insanely envious of all the fancy nut butters you get in the USA! Yum.
I have a fear of flying, but it doesn’t stop me, it just makes me very uncomfortable. I had to fly to and from New Zealand for a few years, so got used to it. I still get very sweaty hands and am silent though.

  • Wendy June 10, 2010, 2:16 pm

I don’t have any real phobias, but I do get really, really anxious and panicky when I have to go into a nursing home.

  • Krista June 10, 2010, 2:18 pm

We take my little neighbour dog trail walking all the time and there is a mteal grated bridge that he is petrified of. As soon as he sees it he starts to tremble! I have to carry him over it each time.

  • Ashley June 10, 2010, 2:24 pm

This prolly makes me wierd as heck but I have a closet phobia lol As in, all the closet doors (I have those sliding closet doors, I live in an apt) must be SHUT before I go to sleep at night. idk where it came from I guess I never grew out of the monster in the closet thing. So embarassing…

  • Annie June 10, 2010, 2:47 pm

The King off the Burger King commercials.
    I wish I was kidding.
It started after I was at a friend’s house and saw the commercial of him in bed with this guy…like “Wake up to the king”.

    Hella weird.

  • alli June 10, 2010, 2:57 pm

poor pup! my little shih tzu knows where the barking dogs live and he always slows down a little and moves farther away from their fence. it’s kinda funny.

i’m *still* scared to go to the bathroom in the dark, and even more scared to flush in the dark!

  • Marilou @ Mostly Healthy June 10, 2010, 3:18 pm

That’s very funny! Maybe he had a gator related nightmare?

  • Samantha @ Health, Happiness & Skinny Jeans June 10, 2010, 3:18 pm

I have a fear of stair cases that are grated (that I can see below) I panicked at the CN Tower Climb in Toronto a few years ago and had to be taken out by EMS. Not cool!!

  • Sarah @ See Sarah Eat June 10, 2010, 4:25 pm

I can’t think of any of mine, but I have a friend who has the same fear as James! 😉

  • Allison June 10, 2010, 5:01 pm

I kiss my hand then touch the plane everytime I fly too! 🙂

  • Kailey (SnackFace) June 10, 2010, 5:17 pm

Awww poor James! That top picture of him is so frickin’ cute, though!

This is horrible, and I cringe just typing this, but I am terrified of having my front teeth knocked out. I think about it all the time. It stemmed from hitting my mouth on metal on a playground when I was a whee one. I’m also afraid of escalators! I ride them, but it takes me a little while to step onto it!

OMGGGG!!!! I wanted to tell you this a week or two ago, but a huge group of OU students marched around campus in their bikinis talking about how every body is beautiful. I missed it, but I was like, THIS IS SO CAITLIN!

  • Melinda Neely June 10, 2010, 6:22 pm

I have a fear of cold, open water; so one might wonder why I am doing a half ironman this weekend!

  • kt June 10, 2010, 6:42 pm

I thought my dog was the only one! It’s gotten a bit better since I’ve started running w him, but can be really dangerous bc he’ll dart out into the middle of the road to avoid the grate! I’m afraid he’s going to trip me or jump in front of a car. If we’re walking, he’ll approach very slowly and smell it, but if I try to pull him closer, he FREAKS. No idea where it came from either, and he’s a 100-lb Shepherd mix, would he really be that afraid of a raccoon?? Such an odd phobia.

  • Kristen June 10, 2010, 7:10 pm

Too funny! My fur-baby has recently decided that he is afraid of dumpsters. He’s only 15 pounds, but he becomes a statue as soon as he gets within about ten feet of one. No amount of tugging on his leash can budge him. I’ve had him since he was born so I KNOW that there is absolutely no reason for this! I actually started bringing treats with me every time I take the trash out, so now he’s starting to associate dumpsters with cookies! He he he.

  • Michelle @ H.E.R. June 10, 2010, 8:40 pm

That nut butter looks amazing, I’ve never seen that brand before. Dogs are funny creatures sometimes!

  • nicole June 10, 2010, 8:59 pm

I wonder if he is scared of the water rushing underneath? Poor baby maybe you can coax him gently with some really good puppy treats! Good Luck!

  • Alyssa June 10, 2010, 9:46 pm

My old dog was afraid of them too!!!!

  • Alison June 10, 2010, 10:30 pm

James’ fear is so funny and cute!

  • MelanieF June 10, 2010, 10:37 pm

I’m scared of flying! I fly anyway, but I take Ativan to help me with the stress.

  • Mary @ What's Cookin' with Mary June 10, 2010, 10:37 pm

    NO WAY!

I took care of my MIL’s two coton’s, Oski & Didley, and one of them (Oski) is DEATHLY afraid of walking over grates, man holes.. basically anything that isn’t like the surface he’s walking on. It’s SO funny, but I totally feel bad for the little guy. It seems like it really gets to him.

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) June 10, 2010, 10:49 pm

James is so cute – your dogs sound like they have SO MUCH personality!!

  • Cynthia (It All Changes) June 10, 2010, 11:32 pm

Our puppies are little and are afraid of grates too. They jump over them or drag me around them.

I’m afraid of itchy things in my bed. If the dogs get dirt on the sheets I make Hunni get up so we can change them.

  • Robin June 11, 2010, 12:41 pm

I have a mini-schnauzer and he became deathly afraid of grates a couple of years back for no reason. I wonder if it is some sort of optical illusion for little dogs………….

  • Libby June 11, 2010, 9:43 pm

Neither of my dogs will walk over a grate – but they don’t freak about it – they just go around. If you try to push them onto it they will jump up on the curb 🙂 – anything to avoid the grate.

    Libby

  • Ali @ Redhead Reports June 14, 2010, 8:49 am

My dog won’t go over a grate in the sidewalk either!

  • Jennifer June 22, 2010, 8:29 pm

It’s Me Or The Dog has a great episode on that! Bring treats while walking to coax the doggie to get near it and reward!

  • Jennifer June 22, 2010, 8:30 pm

(it’s bc they can hear all that sound down there!)
