Woke up on the left side of Jenna’s bed at 3 AM, feeling wide awake.  I took a Benadryl, which knocked me back out until 8:00.  Wahoo! I’m officially on West Coast time.

Half-asleep,  I stumbled into the kitchen and made breakfast:

I was excited to find…

A VitaMix!  We have a pretty lame blender at home, and I’ve heard so much about the glorious VitaMixes that I was excited to make a green smoothie.

Verdict?  Much faster blend, and a much smoother smoothie.  I see why they are so hyped.

I’m not exactly sure what’s in my Green Monster because the greens are from Jenna’s veggie bag.  I think it was kale?

My smoothie contained:

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 2 cups mystery green
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 tablespoon Maca Powder

Maca Powder is something else I’ve been dying to try.

Maca is suppose to be an immune-booster, energy-enhancer, and mood-elevator.  And it’s an aphrodisiac!

Plus, an English muffin with TJ’s almond butter:

Thanks to Lisa, who had a last-minute donation to my Livestrong fund for the Century ride!  I appreciate it!

  • Freya @ Brit Chick Runs May 22, 2010, 11:44 am

Oh I’m dying to try a vitamixer too!! My blender is awful – it literally takens 10mins to make a smoothie 😛
    Have a good day!

  • Bethany @ More Fruit Please May 22, 2010, 11:56 am

If it was kale that you used, was it still good? I’ve never tried kale before, but have heard some people say that it gives their smoothies a bitter taste.

    • Ana May 22, 2010, 12:44 pm

@Bethany, i’m drinking a smoothie with kale in it right now and its not bitter…i think the key is to put some very sweet fruit it in to cut the taste of the kale. i have 1/2 frozen banana, about a handful of frozen strawberries and some almond milk and its creamy and tastes like the fruit. it just looks kinda pinkish/green. so if the color doesn’t weird you out, you should be good.

    • Kristie May 22, 2010, 12:46 pm

I’ve found too that the better blended it is, the better the kale tastes.

    • caitlin May 22, 2010, 5:12 pm

      I liked it!

  • Claire May 22, 2010, 11:59 am

Ahh, I can’t wait for the day I can try (and eventually get…) a Vitamix! All the rave reviews out there really have me convinced, even without using one yet. I had no idea Maca was also an aphrodisiac…ah-mazing. I am sure you and Jenna are psyching yourself up for the race now! Have fun lady!

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing May 22, 2010, 12:01 pm

Jenna hooked you up with one amazing GM!!

  • Jessica @ How Sweet It Is May 22, 2010, 12:04 pm

I have maca but have yet to try it in a smoothie. Could you taste any difference?

  • Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter May 22, 2010, 12:11 pm

Maca is an aphrodisiac?! I had no idea!!!

  • Gracie (complicated day) May 22, 2010, 12:25 pm

If I were Jenna I’d be scared…eating aphrodisiacs and sharing a bed, LOL!

  • Kilee May 22, 2010, 12:34 pm

Good luck with everything! Have tons of fun! I’m dying for a Vitamix also.

  • Cynthia (It All Changes) May 22, 2010, 12:38 pm

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg May 22, 2010, 12:52 pm

lol– I never knew that Maca was an aphrodisiac. And to think that I’ve been using it all this time! No wonder I was feeling so frisky 🙂

  • steph-exercise physiologist and artist! May 22, 2010, 12:54 pm

Awesome that you are on WC time that will help you get a good nights sleep tonight (if you can sleep through the excitement!)I thought Kale would cause bitterness too but adding in sweet tastes and blending well does help cut the kales strong taste. hope you two have a great pre race day

  • Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin May 22, 2010, 12:55 pm

My boyfriend is a chef and they use vitamixers in the kitchens at all his restaurants. I’ve never tried one but $400 seems so much to spend on a blender for home!!

  • Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) May 22, 2010, 1:02 pm

Would love to try a vitamix too at some point. Your smoothie looks positively perfect this morning. 😀

Can’t wait for the race recap!! 😀

  • Erin May 22, 2010, 1:03 pm

I’m so curious to try these products like maca and Amazing Grass. Just need to find the space in my budget. 🙂

  • Heather (Heather's Dish) May 22, 2010, 1:14 pm

i agree with erin, i really want to try those things but there’s the whole issue of having money to get them first 🙂 sounds like a fabulous GM!

  • Camille May 22, 2010, 1:20 pm

It’s great that you adjusted to the time so quickly!
I find going West so much harder than going East!

  • Jackie (Peaces of Earth) May 22, 2010, 1:39 pm

One day a vitamix will be mine!! Aren’t friends that have vitamix’s and maca sitting around just the best?

  • Stephanie May 22, 2010, 1:42 pm

I love maca powder, had some in my oats this morning after a late night out and feel good as new!

  • Tara @ Food for Fuel May 22, 2010, 2:19 pm

I really want to get a Vitamix (even though I haven’t tried one)! I’m convinced they would make the best smoothies ever!! The $400 price tag is what makes me hesitant. Some day…vitamix + DSLR camera…some day 🙂

  • eatmovelove May 22, 2010, 3:30 pm

Team Awesome! That’s great – who came up with the name?! CARB UP and have a great time! 🙂

  • Ellen Collis May 22, 2010, 4:34 pm

Green Monsters just intimidate me for some reason! Did you like them right away or is it an acquired taste??

  • Danielle May 22, 2010, 4:38 pm

Sounds like a great brekkie! Have a great time in Cali… and good luck!

  • J May 22, 2010, 4:43 pm

I love maca!!! The benefit I noticed within the first few weeks was that when the alarm went off I jumped out of bed, fully awake and ready for my day (rather than crawling out of bed in a groggy stupor).

  • Hedda May 22, 2010, 4:56 pm

You are the queen of fueling your body!

Everytime I eat almond butter I wonder how I survived all those years. 21 years in darkness, the rest of my life in almond-sunshine 😉

    Enjoy your weekend!

  • Lisa @ Early Morning Run May 22, 2010, 6:24 pm

I’ve been eating maca powder for a few weeks now in my yogurt and oatmeal. It definitely has a unique taste and smell, but I got used to it after not too long. I’m not sure if it’s made a huge difference, but I’m hoping!

  • Julie @ Pickley Pear May 22, 2010, 9:57 pm

I’ve wondered about the VitaMix. What is in Jenna’s veggie bag? Looks like you girls are having fun!

  • Amber K @ sparkpeople May 22, 2010, 10:35 pm

I totally want a vita-mix! So expensive…. But I keep hearing how awesome it is!!

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) May 24, 2010, 10:11 pm

I have a vitamix, but I don’t know what it can do – I have yet to watch the DVD that came with it!
