Randomness Alert

in All Posts

I had a very rough afternoon (work-wise).  Tremendous writer’s block!  But then I called my mom, and we chatted for a bit.  She helped me out a lot. :)  We’ll see tomorrow.

Writer’s block produces things like this:

I swear.

I also snacked on a bowl of yogurt + granola:

IMG_3236

And a Present bar.  This was like a present – it was so delicious!  My favorite flavor is still Revive though.

IMG_3240

I JUST got home from night class and quickly cooked dinner:

IMG_3248

I made a grilled cheese sammie with sprouts.

Random thoughts:

  • In Anatomy class tonight, we were discussing the male reproductive system, and I giggled like a nervous virgin the entire time.  My professor totally showed an actual penis on the projector!  I think I was the only one who laughed.
  • Spoke to my BFF Bethany tonight, who is in vet school.  We had a really interested discussion about being a vegetarian vet.  She works with some large animals (cows and such) and says that it’s strange because farmers obviously treat them differently than pet owners treat their dogs.  As a vegetarian vet, she sometimes finds it hard to deal with this.  It was a really thought-provoking conversation!
  • The girls from Peas and Thank You, Gigi and Lulu, sent me drawings!  Isn’t that sweet?  I love them (and Mama Pea!).

  • Jessica @ How Sweet It Is December 3, 2009, 9:07 pm

  • Tasha - The Clean Eating Mama December 3, 2009, 9:07 pm

    penis alert – LMFAO!!!

  • Shannon, Tropical Eats December 3, 2009, 9:09 pm

that would make me giggly too hahah. im not sure how anatomy teachers take it seriously!!

ps that cheesey sprout sandwich looks yummy 🙂

  • Brie (The Fit Bride) December 3, 2009, 9:11 pm

Hahaha. You should play the penis game in class.

Random: last night I was video Gchatting with my fiance and I was able to call the dog to the computer from 400 miles away. Technology is cool!

  • Lindsay December 3, 2009, 9:12 pm

i work at a vet med college, its definitely surreal sometimes. even though im vegan and strongly opposed to factory farming, i work every day with people who are supporting it and working to make it even bigger with their research. i know there are a few vegetarians (my boss is one) but i think im the only vegan in the entire school.

    • Caitlin December 3, 2009, 9:15 pm

kudos for surviving vet school – bethany says its insane!!!

      • Lindsay December 3, 2009, 9:50 pm

well i just work here! i was an english major lol. i work in the library 🙂

        • Caitlin December 3, 2009, 9:53 pm

          sorry, i misunderstood!

  • Evan Thomas December 3, 2009, 9:20 pm

I picked up my first persimmon and apparently got the wrong kind because my mouth felt like cotton. I thought I was allergic but now some lovely posters are telling me it’s happened to us all.
In 11th grade bio, the professor had NO boundaries and put up an infected penis on the projector even though it was so tangental from what we were studying. I think we were all too scarred to laugh

  • Jenna December 3, 2009, 9:20 pm

cranberry pumpkin spice sounds delish! i really wanna try those bars!
    jenna

  • GirlonRaw December 3, 2009, 9:21 pm

The most random thing that happened to me today was mid way through my jog with my buddy, I fell into an uncontrollable laughing fit over something not even really that hilarious haha. Crazy

  • Christy December 3, 2009, 9:22 pm

The checker at Bed Bath and Beyond complimented me on my teeth and asked me what I do to take care of them. He was grilling me on what toothpaste I use, what dentist do I go to, etc. It was flattering but a tad strange!

  • rebecca lustig December 3, 2009, 9:22 pm

Random: I found my best friend’s ex boyfriend’s twitter, and laughed for a solid 9 minutes. At least. hehe 🙂

I can’t tell you enough how much I admire you, Operation Beautiful and the optimism you share with us each and every day. You are such a beautiful person (inside and out)– you should be very proud.

    Have a great night,
    bec xo

p.s. the office is THE best thing about Thursdays… next to Grey’s Anatomy.

    • Caitlin December 3, 2009, 9:26 pm

      thank you 🙂

  • Karla December 3, 2009, 9:22 pm

Random things are fun! I walked around my apartment in snow boots (no it’s not snowing out…), I walked around Target and bought nothing despite my strong urge to buy pretty plates.

    Cute pictures!

  • lauren @ Eater not a runner December 3, 2009, 9:23 pm

Um I signed up for my jury duty! And yes that glo bar sounds awesome.

  • VeggieGirl December 3, 2009, 9:23 pm

Random thing = I had the intense urge to clean out my pantry. Took me 2 hours 😀

  • Sara December 3, 2009, 9:24 pm

Don’t tell me that ~ I got mine today, too!

    • Scorpio Woman December 3, 2009, 9:26 pm

I had mine but almost felt nothing and no bad reaction after except the arm LOL

      • Alyssa December 3, 2009, 9:48 pm

        gah, I’m getting mine tomorrow!

  • Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) December 3, 2009, 9:27 pm

I would have laughed my ass off. I’m so immature!

  • candice December 3, 2009, 9:28 pm

Hmmmm… maybe put a book on your head? Maybe the knowledge will diffuse into your brain and help you conquer your writer’s block? 😛 Random: comments about large pears.

  • Niki (Running In Pink) December 3, 2009, 9:28 pm

Try not laughing when a patient tells you he has testicle pain, haha. I’m trying to think of something random that happened today, but I think my day was pretty standard. Nothing fun at all!

  • Diana (Mymarblerye) December 3, 2009, 9:31 pm

Random drawings from ADORABLE kids? Must be nice. 🙂

  • Estela @ Weekly Bite December 3, 2009, 9:31 pm

I’m such a 13 year old at heart… I would have totally laughed!

  • Diana December 3, 2009, 9:32 pm

what’s even worse than wanting to giggle like a nervous virgin when your professor shows a penis during lecture? seeing so many penises during lectures (i’m in med school) that it doesn’t even register in my brain that penises and vaginas are “private” parts…i don’t even bat an eye!

Now, seeing a “live” penis is a totally different thing! During my first standardized patient “sensitive exam” encounter, it was totally like, “crouching tiger, hidden penis!” talk about teeny tiny!

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg December 3, 2009, 9:39 pm

    Hey Caitlin,

I shared this quote with Jenna when she signed her book contract, and it applies to you too! I always think about this excerpt when I have trouble with my writing:

“When you’re a writer, you spend days in the room without knowing what you’ve got, but you’re still willing to keep reeling it in and following it. You’re willing to be true to it. It may mean you have to write thirty pages to get fifteen. The big secret to such writing is the ability to stay in the room. The writer is the person who stays in the room…all the good writing I’ve done in the last ten years has been done in the first twenty minutes after the first time I wanted to leave the room. I’ve learned to stay there and keep writing.”

It’s from a fiction writer named Ron Carlson. Wise words 🙂

Also– I totally would have laughed too. Whatever. Penises are funny.

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) December 3, 2009, 9:41 pm

haha what a random day indeed! oooh we had toasties for dinner last night too…..they were delicious 🙂

  • Allison December 3, 2009, 9:41 pm

My physiology professor laughed when we went over the reproductive systems in class. None of the students did. He also started rubbing his chest when he was talking about the mammary glands, and then when he realized what we were looking at, dropped his hands and said that it was science that made him do that. He said that it’s an instinct for men to do that… AWK

  • Melissa S. December 3, 2009, 9:42 pm

i would have been laughing so hard i was crying. i’m mature that way. 😉

i want pea baby paintings! jealous.

  • Molly @vegandorm December 3, 2009, 9:42 pm

I’m in college now, an ecology & evolutionary biology major, and I’m planning on either going to vet school, becoming a wildlife biologist (grad school), or going into sustainable agriculture (again, grad school).
i have had horses almost my whole life, and as well as dogs and recently a cat.
I honestly don’t know if I would go into large animal vet work as a vegan. I would love to work with horses, but in order to establish myself as a vet I would be expected to work with cows which either end up at slaughterhouses or dairy farms, and I’m definitely not cool with that.
Luckily I’ve got a few years. I’d definitely be interested in hearing how your friend’s experience goes.

  • Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) December 3, 2009, 9:44 pm

It was 65 degrees and mostly sunny in NYC today – I went for my morning run in a tank top and shorts. That’s kind of random. I love your grilled cheese + sprouts sammie!

  • Jessica @ Dairy Free Betty December 3, 2009, 9:48 pm

My random (funny) thing. I went to the thrift store today to pick up a tacky christmas sweater for our party tomorrow night.
The cashier proceeded to tell me how beautiful I would look in that tacky sweater. It was a had to be there moment, because I wanted to laugh, but she was soo sweet!

  • Shannon (The Daily Balance) December 3, 2009, 9:51 pm

love those grilled cheeses you’ve been makin over there!

everyone needs a lil random in their lives 😉

  • Nicci@NiftyEats December 3, 2009, 9:56 pm

A talk with Mom always helps me!

  • Sarah @ See Sarah Eat December 3, 2009, 10:00 pm

I love your randomness! Ha ha, penis 🙂

  • Matt December 3, 2009, 10:00 pm

I am really craving a grilled cheese now 🙂

  • Erin December 3, 2009, 10:04 pm

Aw, those drawing are adorable. I randomly bumped into my best friend (who lives 30 minutes away but works nearby) at Target this evening. Definitely a GOOD random thing! 😀

  • emily December 3, 2009, 10:07 pm

I’m married too and I still laugh like a 6th grader at anything sex related. When I was teaching 8th grade last year if I did a read aloud that had the word “breast” in it I would seriously have to make up a new sentence because otherwise I’d be giggling like a crazy person while my kids sat and stared at me! I’m more than able to discuss sex maturely, but when it pops up unexpectedly I just can’t help it 🙂

  • ashleigh December 3, 2009, 10:07 pm

omg those drawings are too cute! i hope your writer’s block clears for tomorrow!

  • Morgan @ Life After Bagels December 3, 2009, 10:21 pm

It’s okay I would have laughed too . . . for 7 years of my career I have called the sales per department “business blend” but my current company calls it “penetration” and every time I hear it I giggle like a school girl.

  • Joelle (The Pancake Girl) December 3, 2009, 10:22 pm

    THose drawings are precious!

Random today? Well, in NYC, I see random stuff pretty much nonstop, but today I ran into someone singing “Santa Claus is coming to town,” which was pretty awesome.

  • Amanda December 3, 2009, 10:24 pm

Penises are funny, I don’t care what anyone says. The random thing that happened to me today was my belly button got chaffed by the drawstring on my running pants. It hurt when I showered.

  • Good Taste. Healthy Me December 3, 2009, 10:25 pm

haha I am sooo the same way. I always laugh at inappropriate moments…but it’s so much better to laugh at it than sit there stone-faced.

  • Sarah @ The Foodie Diaries December 3, 2009, 10:29 pm

Haha love the writer’s block picture.

  • SweetiePotato December 3, 2009, 10:32 pm

I randomly saw that the Kashi granola bars don’t ground up their flax seed… weird right?! So no absorption… boo! 😕

  • Katie December 3, 2009, 10:36 pm

DId you shoot that apple off the head or thinking of a new Twilight cover 😉

And Maggie in the jogging stroller totally can do it!

And I would have had to leave I was laughing so hard in that class! We gyrated in yoga the other day and I collapsed on the mat. Thank goodness she’s not a normal yoga instructor!

  • Marissa December 3, 2009, 10:43 pm

My Prof was making nudity jokes the whole lecture. This girl also said seminal fluid no less than 20 times. She was having trouble understanding everything. Another girl yelled out, “yay!” when the prof was talking about GnRH. My prof said, “I didn’t know there was a GnRH fan club” the girl’s face turned sooo red!

  • Misty December 3, 2009, 10:53 pm

The pictures from Gigi and Lulu are adorable, just like them!

Here’s a thought for writer’s block: write about something (relevant to OB, of course) that you would like Gigi and Lulu to understand/remember as they get older.

  • Courtney @ The Tasty Balance December 3, 2009, 10:54 pm

There’s something about grilled cheeses! Your picture made my mouth water!

  • *Andrea* December 3, 2009, 11:19 pm

hahaha you crack me up. glad your mommy could help you out. i get so anxious when i’m writing papers and get stuck in a rut.

mama pea’s kid’s drawings are adorable!!!

  • Carolyn December 3, 2009, 11:45 pm

I think you should use that picture on your book “jacket.” LOL

  • Brittney December 3, 2009, 11:48 pm

I learned this evening at work that you can shave your legs with Cheese Wiz. Supposedly. I work in a library and there was a book I was looking through about all of this random stuff you can do with different foods and such and that was one of the things in there 🙂

  • Wendy December 3, 2009, 11:55 pm

Hi Caitlin, I’m your dairy farmer reader. 🙂

My college degrees are in animal science and one of the courses I took was reproductive physiology. I don’t remember the penis lectures being terribly awkward, but maybe that’s because they were animal penises, not human ones?

I would have loved to hear your friend’s perspective as a vegetarian veterinary student!

    • Caitlin December 4, 2009, 7:57 am

maybe i should try to get her to do a guest post…. she wasn’t saying that anyone was right or wrong professionally, of course, she just felt like some parts of her field contradict what she personally practices.

      • Wendy December 4, 2009, 11:43 am

I would be really interested to read about her views and experiences!

Please don’t think I was offended in any way – I just think it’s really important to have an open dialogue between farmers, who produce food, and consumers, who buy food. There are so many misconceptions circulating between these two groups of people, and I think we all suffer because of it!

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) December 4, 2009, 12:36 am

Not so much random happened … but I do think it is funny that you laughed in your anatomy class 🙂 I have to teach sex ed/ anatomy etc. to my grade 7 and 8s this year – yikes!!

  • Mama Pea December 4, 2009, 12:48 am

Randomness alert? Uh, how about awesomeness alert?! I forgot how freakishly talented my children are 🙂

When we were in law school the teacher would always talk about a “breach of duty” and I’d turn to my now husband and say, “Heh heh…he said doodie…” I’d crack up and no one would get it. I’m amazed he married me.

  • M December 4, 2009, 5:58 am

Mama Pea, what’d ya think of the “fiduciary duties?”

Heh, I still laugh about that one.

“He said fiduciary. Then he said duty.”

  • kilax December 4, 2009, 7:15 am

I would love to read a guest post from Bethany on the topic of how farmer’s treat their animals 🙂

  • Paige (Running Around Normal) December 4, 2009, 7:49 am

Well Caitlin Appleseed :), let’s see…I had a woman who was driving in front of me randomly stop her car in the middle of the street we were driving on, to let someone turn the corner onto the street in front of her. Now that’s a little too courteous. Not to mention I was thisclose to nailing her in her bumper. Hm..that’s what he said? Anyway, it was random.

That grilled sammie looks good! I hope the writing flows with ease today!

  • Ashley December 4, 2009, 8:13 am

Yesterday, I bought a giant green fruit called a pummelo — I’m not even sure what it is, just some sort of citrus. That’s pretty random!

  • Tina December 4, 2009, 9:26 am

Haha I love random posts 🙂
The most random thing that happened to me yesterday was when I was sitting in my dorms lounge and in walks this guy in a full on Santa outfit. Except…not one for guys. You see, this guy is sort of a character and ONLY wears skirts. So picture a tall red-headed young man wearing a mini red velvet skirt with white trim and matching top. Exactly.

  • Lisa December 4, 2009, 10:09 am

I probably would’ve laughed at the penis as well—I think penis’s just look funny!:)

  • Lisa December 4, 2009, 10:09 am

oh–and I forgot to write random thing.

My coworker is always cold here at the office—and Im always burning up. But, she came into my office where a snuggie and acted like it was completely normal. Hilarious.

  • Anne Marie@ New Weigh of Life December 4, 2009, 10:44 am

Some times ramdom days are the best days. And the penis thing? I would’ve cracked up too!

  • Nicole December 4, 2009, 3:44 pm

My sister is a vegan and also studying to be a vet. I’ve never asked her what she thinks about working with animals that might eventually end up as food. I know that for a class in school, she had to train a pig to do some things (walk on command, sit, etc) and at the end though, the pigs were sent to slaughter and she was pretty upset at that. I don’t know! I’ll ask her what she thinks.
