Savory Oatmeal

in All Posts

Self-proclaimed Breakfast Day continues with a very breakfast-y lunch.

My savory oatmeal was hot, cheesy, and delicious.  Plus, I snuck in some vegetables.  🙂

My oatmeal contained:

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup cheese (added towards end of cooking)
  • 1/2 cup shredded organic baby spinach (added towards end of cooking)
  • Garlic, pepper, and salt
  • Toppings:  1/4 cup pinto beans and a little more romano cheese.

Mmmm!  With a cup of Zesty Carrot Juice:

Still perfecting the Zesty Carrot Juice recipe, but it contains a mix of organic apple juice, organic carrot juice, lime and lemon juice, and pureed ginger.  It’s delicious and really refreshing.

Plus, pickles:

I’m stuffed.  I could barely finish the oatmeal.  :)  If you’re scared to try savory oatmeal – don’t be!  It’s so good.

Here’s another savory oatmeal recipe I created:  Green Eggs and Ham Oatmeal (before the vegetarian days, obviously)!

Would you believe I didn’t try oatmeal until I was 23 or so?  Now, I love oatmeal almost every way — sweet, savory, in smoothies, in cookies, baked!  Just not cold.

What’s your favorite way to eat oatmeal?

Ok, I am going to try Savory Oat's this weekend! I wouldn't think "oats" and "cheese" would be good but you got me convinced so I will try it. =) Laura

P.S. The carrot juice looks so good, I need to get a juicer!

I love oatmeal, but I can't imagine adding cheese, garlic, etc. with it. Maybe I'll give it a try soon!

  • recipesforcreativity September 17, 2009, 9:11 am

Oatmeal, Oatmeal, Oatmeal. I haven't really tried the savory oatmeal thing, but I like it straight from the canister (yes, you can eat it uncooked), cooked with fruit, cold with yogurt, etc. It's good stuff!

  • Lauren September 17, 2009, 9:12 am

That looks so delicious! I have never had savory oatmeal before, but I'm going to try it tonight. Thanks for the food inspiration!

  • SuperDots September 17, 2009, 9:16 am

I finally tried oatmeal at 26! LOL

Yours sounds interesting…may give it a try one day! I'm on an oatmeal+peanut butter kick right now!

  • Food Makes Fun Fuel September 17, 2009, 9:17 am

Oatmeal with peanut butter and some other feature(jam, pumpkin, chocolate chips, etc.) is my go-to. But I do like french toast oats(with an egg and maple syrup.

  • Sarah @ The Foodie Diaries September 17, 2009, 9:17 am

I've never had savory oats but your lunch is really making me want to try it!

  • jack+alli September 17, 2009, 9:19 am

you might have convinced me to try it! i'm always more apt to try something when there's a picture of it!
    i'm thinking i need a juicer soon!

  • Natalie September 17, 2009, 9:19 am

I love oatmeal and often want to eat it several times a day…maybe I can justify it now if I eat it sweet for breakfast and savory for lunch 🙂

    Yummy!

  • Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) September 17, 2009, 9:22 am

I didn't try oatmeal for a long time either. I love it but my favorite way to eat oats is in oatmeal cookies!

  • Christina September 17, 2009, 9:25 am

I love adding cocoa powder and peanut butter to my oatmeal.

I mix in the peanut butter at the end of cooking and micro the cocoa powder with the oatmeal. I also add a splash of skim milk at the end, and sometimes I'll add 1 teaspoon of sugar if I need a little extra sweet.

  • Megan @ Megzz Wins At Life September 17, 2009, 9:25 am

mmmm looks soo good! When I was younger i use to eat Strawberry oatmeal untill I realized how much sugar is in it.. now I just add strawberries!

  • Nicole (the other one) September 17, 2009, 9:28 am

I just read your post about not liking veggies. I'm convinced it's your preparation method (or I suppose you may just not like veggies!). It's all about the roasting…try roasting broccoli tossed with a little olive oil and S&P at 500 degrees for 12 minutes (stirring once half way through)

  • littlemissminny September 17, 2009, 9:34 am

I love my banana oats with pb, or cherry oatmeal, pumpkin oatmeal, cocoa banana pb oatmeal 😀
I tried savory oatmeal too, with ham and cheese.I liked it, but the last time I ate it, my tummy didn't like it. I got sick. Now I'm afraid that'll happen again, so I stick with sweet oats

  • healthyfitmama September 17, 2009, 9:34 am

I love sweet oatmeal. I like put banana, vanilla, cinnamon, raisins, and walnuts in mine. I'm not sure I'm adventurous enough to try savory oats…

  • Lauren @ Dragonflies Journey September 17, 2009, 9:39 am

I love to eat it flavored, like maple brown sugar. I can't eat plain oats anymore because they just sit in my stomach like a belly bomb and I don't feel good.

  • christie, honoring health September 17, 2009, 9:47 am

I don't eat oats the way I used to because most are not gluten free due to cross contamination and the ones that are certified g-free are very $$$. None the less, my all time favorite way to eats oats is custard style. MMMMM

  • Leah September 17, 2009, 9:55 am

mmmm your savory oats look sooo delicious!! I am totally trying that after my long run this weekend!!

  • greensandjeans September 17, 2009, 9:59 am

I eat oatmeal almost every day and some of my favorite combinations are: making my oatmeal with coffee and topping it with a banana and almonds, adding pumpkin, banana, and cinnamon, and obviously anything plus nutbutter!

  • Paige@ Running Around Normal September 17, 2009, 10:00 am

Hmm..I've still never tried savory oatmeal. I will soon though. My favorite way is to eat it bananaberrybutter-style with a smushed nanner, blueberries, almond butter, and flax meal. Yum!

  • k September 17, 2009, 10:00 am

hmmm…not sure about savoury oats yet…maybe the idea will grow on me.

  • Samantha~ September 17, 2009, 10:07 am

Savory oatmeal does sound kind of scary! But I am going to try the marinutta sauce, I may as well try savory oatmeal!!

  • Maggie September 17, 2009, 10:13 am

I like protein powder oat bran, if that counts 😛 I like the green spirulina kind of soy powder. I guess it's kind of sweet, so maybe it doesn't count. I also like green oats with parm.

  • Kristen @ frostingandfroth.com September 17, 2009, 10:16 am

I'm still scared to try savory oatmeal. It just seems…wrong. Ha ha. But I love it with nut butter, bananas, and granola. But what isn't delicious with a bunch of almond butter slathered on top? 😉

  • Ali September 17, 2009, 10:24 am

My favorite way to eat oatmeal is the plain old way with some pumpkin, cinnamon and brown sugar! YUM! But, I will have to try savory oats!

  • Mellissa September 17, 2009, 10:27 am

I like my oatmeal to be very hot, with nuts, dried fruit, nut butter and a bit of brown sugar.

  • Niki September 17, 2009, 10:32 am

I have yet to try savory oats but it sounds good! I will have to try it soon:)

  • Tanya September 17, 2009, 10:35 am

I gotta say I'm actually a little scared to try it – oatmeal and beans – that's creative! My fave way to eat oatmeal is with cinnamon and raisins and maybe a few slivers of almonds.

  • Amanda @ Cakes and Ale September 17, 2009, 10:40 am

I love savory oats… I mean, they're just like any other grain (rice, barley, etc.) – why not add cheese?!

  • Taylor September 17, 2009, 10:45 am

I still need to try savory oats – they're so popular! I love them cooked with an egg and loaded with sweet toppings. Plus granola for crunch!

  • Carolina John September 17, 2009, 10:51 am

that does look like some good oats. wild, savory oatmeal.

  • HealthySDLiving September 17, 2009, 10:59 am

I used to eat oatmeal as a kid and basically hated it for no reason at all other than it was basically a bowl of mush! Now I can't get enough of it and like to add fruit, PB and nuts! Yum!

  • brandi September 17, 2009, 11:09 am

great lunch! you've got me on a breakfast kick today too 🙂

my favorite lately is oats-in-a-nut-butter-jar. but I like them all kinds of ways: sweet, savory, baked, in cookies…all of it.

  • Jen September 17, 2009, 11:40 am

I love oatmeal with pumpkin. I add a little pumpkin spice with either a bit of maple syrup or brown sugar.

I also love hot oat bran. It is like cream of wheat only brown and with fiber.

  • Siobhan September 17, 2009, 12:24 pm

Ahh I love breakfast foods- my favorite way to eat oatmeal is to top it with chocolate chips (letting them get all melty), some kind of fruit, and a spoonful of almond butter. Pancakes are also near and dear to my heart 🙂

  • kristin (Kristin's Nibbles) September 17, 2009, 12:25 pm

YUM! I love breakfast- morning, noon or night!

I've never been too much of an oatmeal fan, but now you've got me thinking… savory oats might be the way to go!

  • Jenn Eats Nutritiously Now September 17, 2009, 12:40 pm

I'd love to try a savory oatmeal. Maybe I'd like it more that way?

  • Jolene - EverydayFoodie September 17, 2009, 1:08 pm

You have convinced me to try savory oats 🙂

  • Angharad September 17, 2009, 1:21 pm

I think if I had to choose I would go with classic hot sweet oats but savory oats are so good aren't they? I like them spicy with some hot sauce and diced bacon (ok – not for veggies!)

  • Jessica September 17, 2009, 1:31 pm

I have been so afraid to try savory oats. I think I have to save it for a day when I have time to make a 2nd breakfast in case I don't like it.

  • Susan September 17, 2009, 1:51 pm

Yum!! I love savoury oats! I've been doing it with a fried egg and breakfast sausage, but I know that's not your thing 😉

These days I'm digging chocolate banana oat bran with peanut butter. But I grew up on steel cut covered in real maple syrup and sunflower seeds. Definitely a comfort meal for me!

  • Jenna September 17, 2009, 2:07 pm

i have to say i have never had oatmeal before! i am always hesitant in cooking it, i always think i am going to mess it up!

  • Steph September 17, 2009, 4:30 pm

My favorite way is hot oats with any sort of berry and lots of nut butter!! I don't think it will ever get old to me 🙂

Your lunch looks very good and the juice sounds so refreshing!

  • Rosey Rebecca September 17, 2009, 5:38 pm

That's so funny! I had oatmeal for lunch today too! I love banana oats made with vanilla soy milk and shredded coconut and topped with PB and blueberries. OMG YUM. I love oatmeal so much!

  • Kiersten September 17, 2009, 5:39 pm

I like my oatmeal cooked with rice milk and water (50-50) and cinnamon. Then I add ground flax and a spoonful of nut butter. That's my usual breakfast.

  • Mackenzie September 17, 2009, 6:23 pm

I looooove savory oatmeal. My favorite is either oats+tuna+garlic+onion+laughing cow

    or

oats+chopped up apricot plus apricot juice+red pepper flakes+teensy bit garlic+chopped up pork tenderloin…its a sweet and spicy tonguegasm basically

oatmeal+beans+spinach, okay caitlin, seriously, how does your stomach handle that much fiber?!?! I can do alot of fiber, but you're impressive! I've actually wondered that before with some of your meals. I guess maybe you're allowed more fiber if you work from home, if you get what I'm sayin 😉

  • emily September 17, 2009, 6:37 pm

Great continuation of Breakfast Day! I made oats with turkey bacon and sunny side up eggs once and they rocked my socks.

  • BroccoliHut September 17, 2009, 8:46 pm

I had savory oats today too. This morning's version had broccoli, chili flakes, and spicy PB:)

  • seesaraheat September 22, 2009, 11:01 am

I had tried oatmeal before but I didn't like it because all I did was try to cook plain oats with milk in the microwave, haha. But then two years ago I started experimenting and now I am in love.

The best discovery for me was peanut butter (or almond) on oats. YUM.
