Break Up Lines

in All Posts

I woke up with enough time to have a dance party in my living room:

Plus, I squeezed in some strength moves:

  • 100 sit-ups
  • 30 push-ups
  • 40 chest flys with 3 lb weights (all I have!)

And I watched Entourage.  So funny.  Best part was when E told his overbearing girlfriend:  "You say you’re not crazy, but all signs point to the contrary."  LOL

And breakfast:

Flax French toast, grapes, and real maple syrup.

What’s the best/worst break-up line you’ve ever given or received?  Once, someone told me that they had to go "find themselves," which I thought it was pretty cliched and lame.  However, I’ve definitely dealt out the "it’s not you, it’s me!" line more than once (ouch).

When I was in college I went on a couple dates with this one guy who was in lots of my classes. I didn't want to see him anymore and pretty much avoided him, but over the summer (after we graduated) he was still pursuing me. Being the wuss that I was back then, when I moved out of my apartment near campus I never told him I was moving or gave him my new phone number! I just left! LOL, it's funny though, because we're friends on facebook now and it's no big deal. Plus it was 8 years ago!

  • Sarah @ The Foodie Diaries September 22, 2009, 5:05 am

Haha I've definitely dished the "it's not you, it's me." I always promise myself I won't go there–but in the awkwardness of the moment, it tends to just slip out. My b.

  • Olga September 22, 2009, 5:06 am

oh yeah, definitely the "it's not you. It's me." In a voicemail.

The great thing is, he tried asking me back out and I was like "it's not you, really. It's ME."

  • christie, honoring health September 22, 2009, 5:09 am

I hate the it's not you it's me line. What a load of crap. But hey, I have finally learned after all of these years that garbage like that means there is just something better around the corner!

  • Erica September 22, 2009, 5:10 am

ah! I have to watch entourage- we DVRd it! Great way to wake up this morning (both the workout and the bfast).

  • Jenna September 22, 2009, 5:18 am

i don't really remember any break up lines! hah.

Yay for a dance party + French toast! Looks like a fun morning, which you deserve after your crazy long day yesterday!

Worst break-up line ever? "I found someone new." I admired the truthfulness of it but seriously…OUCH!

  • melissanibbles September 22, 2009, 5:40 am

"I'm trying to lead a more edgy lifestyle and you just don't fit into it."

This came from a guy in college who was obsessed with "Catcher In The Rye", leather coats, and Europop music.

  • RhodeyGirl September 22, 2009, 5:41 am

How often do you have conference calls? You should totally get a headset!! Now that I am working from home I am constantly calling my office in RI (when I'm not on Skype) and I use my headphones with a microphone so that I am hands free. It is so so so much better because I can do other things while on the phone!

  • Christina September 22, 2009, 5:46 am

One guy who I dated for 2 years started to get heavy into drugs and so we would fight about it because I cared about him, didn't like it, and knew he was headed down the wrong path.

He broke up with me and actually said "I know you don't like that I do drugs, so I have to let you go."

The loser chose drugs over being with me. His loss!

  • Mara @ What's For Dinner? September 22, 2009, 5:56 am

I once got "I'm too diabetic and you're too overweight for us to be together."
    Lovely.

  • Peanut Butter Swirl September 22, 2009, 6:04 am

"its not you, its your best friend"
yeah.. I really didn't get that either.

LOVE your dance party! Such a fun workout 🙂

  • Graze With Me September 22, 2009, 6:08 am

After a really bad haircut senior year of high school my bf at the time took one look at me and said, "You know how sometimes your opinions of people just change? Well, I don't think we should date anymore."

I've been scared shitless to get more than 2" cut at a time ever since!

  • Ally September 22, 2009, 6:10 am

Dance party AND French Toast!? Pretty perfect morning if you ask me! haha… I've done the "I'm just not ready for a boyfriend right now" line.. when actually I meant I don't want YOU as a boyfriend anymore. Ugh, terrible I know but hey, at least I was honest!

  • brandi September 22, 2009, 6:21 am

Hmm…I don't even think I remember the break up reasons. I'm sure there were some bad ones in high school, though. I only really dated one person before my husband, though, so not many chances for bad break ups.

  • seesaraheat September 22, 2009, 6:28 am

I can't remember too many actual lines, I just remember the conversations starting with "We need to talk…" like people haven't caught on to what that means! Might as well just leave it there 😉

  • greensandjeans September 22, 2009, 6:29 am

I told someone that we were "just growing in two different directions." So bad.

  • jen September 22, 2009, 6:33 am

i got "we have to take time apart to bring us back together." – after 9.5 years (i thought we were going to get married).

turns out he was just too much of a coward to admit he found my replacement and had no intention of ever getting back together with me. now he's engaged to the girl he cheated on me with. oy!

  • Nicole (dishin') September 22, 2009, 6:39 am

One guy I was dating said to me "I'm just not good at the relationship thing."

That's all I needed to hear!

  • emily September 22, 2009, 6:42 am

I've actually never been broken up with woot! And my relationships have either been very long and serious or very casual, so there isn't much room for akward moments. One time in 7th grade though (you know when people "go out" emphasis on the quotes) my best friend got me to do this –

"Hey, Mike, are we going out still? Oh. Well, not anymore."

    🙂

  • lilveggiepatch September 22, 2009, 6:45 am

HAHA I love this question! I've also been the giver of "It's not you, it's me" (but really, it IS you) and "I need time to myself" quite a few times…

  • Food Makes Fun Fuel September 22, 2009, 6:48 am

Definitely the worst was when I asked my very good friend who I knew had a crush on me to go out because all our friends were pressuring us. 3 days later I couldn't take the guilt anymore and basically layed it down to here: that I really didn't like her that way and this was all just a mistake on my part

  • julie September 22, 2009, 7:02 am

i once got someone to break up with *me* by using "where is this going?"

  • Runeatrepeat September 22, 2009, 7:07 am

    I love french toast!

  • Matt (No Meat Athlete) September 22, 2009, 7:10 am

Junior year of high school I broke up with my girlfriend, citing the fact that we'd probably be going to different colleges a year and half later. Pretty lame excuse. 🙂

  • chandra September 22, 2009, 7:10 am

My last boyfriend broke up with me because he said I was "too nice and made it hard for him to ever feel like a good boyfriend." Honestly, he wasn't a good boyfriend. 🙂 LOL That was over 2 years ago! god I've been single a long time now…

  • MAMA P September 22, 2009, 7:17 am

After dating a guy regularly for 6 weeks, he called me one day to say he couldn't date me anymore because he wasn't physically attracted to me. But he hoped we could be friends. Right….

  • Nicole (anotheronebitesthecrust.wordpress.com) September 22, 2009, 7:19 am

Haha, I am loving this post and these comments!

I've used the "it's not you, it's me" line a couple times! One time, someone broke up with me because they told me they were in love with another woman! It was the most honest break-up ever, haha! At the time, I was pretty crushed though! Man, that was a long time ago.

  • Christy September 22, 2009, 7:23 am

Hmmm…my best one is "I just don't love you like I should" from a guy that I thought was going to be proposing any day at that time. My most recent (2 weeks ago) came from my boyfriend of 2.5 years that, I thought was also going to propose anytime, when he said that he needs time to miss me to make sure our relationship is going to last. WTF? I was moved with him to California last year and his time/space needs have caused me to have to move back across the country. You could say I'm a little bitter….

  • Heather September 22, 2009, 7:46 am

Oh dear- entourage!! I have a teen-beat crush on E, and therefore Kevin Connolly- much like Jonathan Taylor Thomas circa 1991.

  • Jessica September 22, 2009, 7:46 am

I've never actually had a break-up. I'm in a relationship right now but throughout school and up until I graduated college I was too independent and had no desire to date anyone.

I've rebuked my fair share of advances with the 'I'm just not interested in dating ANYONE', which I think they more than often took to mean 'It's not you, it's me'. But I did mean it, I really did like some of them.

  • Jessica September 22, 2009, 8:01 am

I thought that episode of Entourage was so funny! I laughed through the entire thing. I was kind of sad because I was starting to like Ashley. Does that make me crazy??

  • Christy September 22, 2009, 8:08 am

LOVE Entourage! But I really don't like E's girlfriend. She needs to leave the show. Worst break up line was that he was dating my friend too!

  • Katie September 22, 2009, 8:18 am

After breaking up with an ex-bf of 3+ years and finding out that he had been cheating on me the whole time, he stated, "If only you knew how FEW times I cheated on you!" Um, I'm pretty sure more than 0 is a problem, buddy.

  • Anne Marie September 22, 2009, 8:25 am

I HATE the I love you, but not in love with you. What the heck is that?1

  • Courtney September 22, 2009, 8:52 am

Dance party for exercise rocks!! Doesn't even seem like exercise when you are rocking out to some good music!

I want some of that French Toast! Yummy!

I haven't really ever gotten any cheesy break up lines……that I can remember!

    =) Laura

  • Julie September 22, 2009, 9:01 am

I've used the old "I don't want to be in a relationship right now" line. But what I really meant was "I don't want to be in a realtionship with you, you smothering needy loser".

  • Brie (The Fit Bride) September 22, 2009, 9:06 am

    Oh, break up lines!

The best ones I've gotten? "I'm gay." And I've heard this TWICE. Clearly I have terrible gay-dar.

  • Allison September 22, 2009, 9:47 am

I once got "you're the kind of girl a guy would marry, not date."

  • Sarah (LovIN My Tummy) September 22, 2009, 9:54 am

I got, "I'm not as physically attracted to you as I thought I was." Ouch. At least he was honest…and clearly BLIND! 😉

  • Dawn (HealthySDLiving) September 22, 2009, 10:05 am

Ah I have to catch up on Entourage!
haha Dance parties in the morning are always fun!

  • Brooke0502 September 22, 2009, 10:37 am

    Looks like a fun morning!

The worst line I ever got {although not much of a line} was when he knocked on my window at midnight drunk telling me how awesome some girl name Jen was!! It's a good thing we weren't serious!

  • Amy September 22, 2009, 11:13 am

lol.. I loved this weeks Entourage when Ari was screaming at Lloyd!

So funny. I just started watching that show this season, but am loving it. My husband has watched it from the beginning, but I just started liking it!

  • Lizzy September 22, 2009, 12:54 pm

This one guy that i was dating didn't know how to tell me that "things were over" so he used the excuse "i didn't know how to tell you" uhhhh! hahahahha

    Breakfast looks awesome! 🙂

  • OhSheGlows September 22, 2009, 3:36 pm

Damn woman you are smoking hot!

Eric pulled this line on me several years ago, 'I need some time apart.' OUCH! MY own husband sumped me! bahah. Sad but true. Luckily the ass came to his senses and groveled at my feet 4 months later. 😉

  • Bee September 22, 2009, 6:53 pm

quoted directly from my CELL PHONE TEXT MESSAGE

"i love you more than anyone i have every loved in my life, and that is the reason that i have to let you go. i don't know how to love"

    on valentines day/my birthday.
    perfect.

I was shopping with friends and called home to say I was goning to be home late. My dad told me that my boyfriend had left me something. I spent the rest of the day gushing about how wonderful by boyfriend was, only to go home and find he dumped me in a note he left with my dad while I was gone.
