Heat Stroke

in All Posts

I don’t know WHY I thought it would be a good idea to go for a 6.0 mile run at 2 PM in August in Florida.  It was dreadfully hot outside!  I was actually concerned about heat stroke at one point.

Between the sunglass and CamelBak, I pretty much looked like a sweaty, girlie version of Robocop on my run:

TOO MANY gadgets and wires!  🙂

I ran sans shirt again.  I think this is only the second time I’ve actually done this — it’s kind of freeing!  Who cares what strangers in their cars think?  It’s too hot for a shirt when it’s 90 degrees out!

  • Duration: 1 hour and 4 minutes (I actually stood underneath a tree for a few minutes at one point)
  • Distance: 6.0  miles
  • Calories Burned: 480

All in all, a VERY hot but enjoyable run!

Here are my eats thus far.  Around 10 AM, I snacked on crackers and cheese:

Lunch was a veggie burger, celery, and carrots:

Mmm. Delish!

I ate a Kashi TLC bar right before my run:

And when I got back, I inhaled granola + Oikos yogurt:

Megan’s coming over to raid my closet in hopes of finding a dress for the Healthy Living Summit!  Gotta go shower!  Have a great afternoon!

Congrats to you for running in sports bra only! I haven't worn a singlet all summer. All those crunches and miles make our stomachs rock, so why not show 'em off!!!

    Robocop…that is priceless.

  • EmLit August 7, 2009, 1:10 pm

I have totally gone for longish runs at inappropriate times (read: HOT) of the day, too! And I do it without thinking about it until I get out there, then I realize that it might not be the best idea!! Sounds like it was a good run, though. Congratulations on beating the heat 🙂

Ahh, i need to find those mocha Kashi bars.
And shirtless running, I kinda really want to make that plunge, but I'm so reserved, I don't want people looking and honking at me!! I don't care…but I do!

Whew, I don't know how you did it. When it's that hot here, I can hardly stand 2 miles! You go girl!! have a great weekend 🙂

  • Whitney@whitsgettingfit August 7, 2009, 1:35 pm

Ugh, running in the heat is the WORST. The worst, I say!

    Yay for 1 week!

  • Carrie H August 7, 2009, 1:38 pm

Ha ha … sometimes when I carry everything with me (my heart rate monitor with strap and watch, a mace, my road id, my mp3 player, my sunglasses, a camelback), I feel like a running garage sale!

Oh, and my house key. Knew I was forgetting something.

    🙂

Please make sure to fully hydrate yourself now that you're back. I got some sort of heat stroke/heat exhaustion thing once and it SUCKED.

  • Therese August 7, 2009, 1:53 pm

Yikes I plan to do 4 miles when I get off work…hopefully it has cooled off some by then!

  • Rika August 7, 2009, 2:14 pm

  • eatingmachine August 7, 2009, 2:19 pm

wow, now I feel bad for wimping out on going to the gym when it was hot here (oregon) last week!
although in my defense it was 107, and the AC went out at the gym.

  • Paige@ Running Around Normal August 7, 2009, 2:35 pm

hahah yeah that's a heck of a lot of gadgets. Gotta get your water when it's that hot out though. Great job on the run!

And kinda random, but what's that picture behind you? From that angle, I can't tell if I think it looks like a peach or a butt! LOL

  • Chloe August 7, 2009, 2:35 pm

Hey Caitlin! Do you ever get headaches from running in the heat and sweating more than usual? Just wondering because that happens to me and I was thinking it might happen to others as well.

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point August 7, 2009, 2:43 pm

paige – lol its a flamingo. i need to take it down… it's kind of ugly.

chloe – ugh yes i had the worst headache. make sure you drink enough water!

Congrats on fitting in a good 6miles, that's awesome! Heat certainly is rough, though.. makes the run so much harder!

Wish I had the corage to just rock a sports bra!!!

  • Nicci August 7, 2009, 3:31 pm

I think one day soon I'll be able to wear just a sports bra. You go girl!

  • Amanda August 7, 2009, 4:52 pm

    Hey Caitlin,

Just wanted to pass along yet another reason to wear a Road ID, which I purchased after you wrote about it. A girl who graduated college with me was running in a Philadelphia park on Wednesday evening, and a huge tree branch fell from 50 feet up and killed her immediately 🙁 What is almost worse than this freak accident is that she had no identification on her, and they weren't able to id her until the next morning. Obviously this is a horrible and tragic story, but sadly we never know what can happen.

Thanks for making me a little safer,
    Amanda

The only half marathon i've run was on a freakishly hot 92 degree day in APRIL in NEW YORK. we'd been training in 55 degree weather! Running in the heat is SO HARD. Congrats on finishing!

  • roseyrebecca August 7, 2009, 5:08 pm

I just wrote in my post that when I drive past people running, I want to cheer them on out the window because I'm crazy!

I should try to Florida and cheer you on! haha

  • Anna August 7, 2009, 5:30 pm

Damn girl, you look intense! Baller.

Also, Adorable picture of you and the hus in the background of your yogurt/granola picture!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point August 7, 2009, 6:05 pm

amanda – that is soooo sad! 🙁 im glad you wear a road id – i always wear mine, too!
