After 30 days of not running, I FINALLY got to pound the pavement again.  How did it feel?  Let’s just say….

CIMG5040

It was SWEATY! It was GLORIOUS! It was FUN! Oh, and it was raining.  🙂

I only had to put in about 1.5 hour at my part-time gig tonight, so I was free by 7:30.  Since it was still light outside, I decided to lace up the sneakers and go for a run.  Honestly, it was amazing. I had this HUGE grin on my face the entire time.

Oh, and there was lots of music video dancing/running action going on to "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga:

CIMG5041

Yes, I seriously pretend like I’m in a music video when I run.  My favorite move is the Vogue move (shown above).  It’s embarrassing.  And it’s awesome.

One of the key things about running is to NEVER take on a big mileage increase.  In fact, you should limit your increases to 10% a week.  So, I knew I had to start slow and short.

I did 2.0 miles in 20 minutes as follows:

  • Ran 1.2 miles
  • Walked 0.30 mile
  • Ran 0.5 mile

I walked a little because I knew I needed to physically (watch those knee!) not endurance-wise.  Really, I didn’t feel winded at all!  I think all my cross-training in the last month paid off.  In fact, judging from my time, I was going pretty fast (for me) when I was running.

Seriously… it was amazing. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Afternoon Eats and Dinner

My afternoon snacks included a crushed Kashi TLC bar and Chobani:

And an orange:

Another chocolate:

And a Green Monster (1 cup unsweet almond breeze, 1 banana, flax, and 1 cup kale):

CIMG5033

And dinner was eaten on the go at work

CIMG5015

Dinners like this are so time-effective.  I made a bunch of brown rice on Monday and just added in 1/2 cup of edamame and 1/4 cup chickpeas.   I also added 1 tablespoon of this dressing:

CIMG5014

Seriously, it took me 5 minutes to make this meal.  I put it in a tupperware, tossed it in my purse, and ate it cold.  It was SO good and filling.  Yum!  (Oh, and I ate 1/2 at work and 1/2 after my run).

OK — time for The Biggest Loser finale!  I hope Mike wins!

Haha you are so cute with your dancing/music video moves! I love the chickpea salad idea–I often take something similar for lunch:) Have a great night!

Glad you enjoyed your run. Thanks for the tips about increasing mileage! As I new runner it was something I was curious about 🙂

  • Kelly Anderson May 12, 2009, 5:59 pm

Yay for running! I’m glad you are being smart and easing your way back into it. I agree with you about the treatment of animals and the going veggie deal. Good luck! I didn’t realize that free range eggs aren’t what they claim to be. Thanks for the insight. I’m definitely looking into the organic/free range/hormone free regulations.

haha i totally pretend like i’m in a music video too! and i sing out loud

  • Hi! I'm Erin May 12, 2009, 6:03 pm

    You look so happy!

I love running the rain. As long as their isn’t lightening and it’s warm outside I think it feels great.

Also, your dinner is AWESOME! I’m totally going to steal that idea. I almost always have those things in my pantry anyway.

  • runsarah May 12, 2009, 6:12 pm

Glad you had an awesome run! I agree with the mileage, I’ve had some knee problems since upping my mileage too much.

  • kweston@hagerty.com May 12, 2009, 6:14 pm

  • Linda May 12, 2009, 6:14 pm

The pic says it all – you are absolutely radiant in your post-run glow. I’m glad you made it out and to hear that your knee issues didn’t flare up. Coincidentally, I’m keeping an eye out on knee issues too,but I have a Half marathon in two weeks. Afterwards, I plan on taking a serious hiatus from running.

  • Meg May 12, 2009, 6:14 pm

Good to see you didn’t lose too much fitness during your hiatus. Cross training is a great thing. I’ve had to take some time off recently too, because of injury, but I swan and lifted weights and I feel just as good coming back as I did when I stopped!

Yah for a great run! That’s awesome Caitlin. Good for you for taking it easy and not pushing yourself too hard at first.

I LOVE to listen to that song when I run. I think I actually might dance a lil when I run and I listen to it. Probably looks ridiculous but its fun!

  • Stacey May 13, 2009, 4:53 am

I was soo surprised to see Helen win!! I was rooting for Tara!

YUM where did you get that dressing??

Oh and yay for the post-hiatus run! Can’t wait until I can run again!!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point May 13, 2009, 4:56 am

stacey – i was disappointed helen won because i think she is too thin — 117 and 5 ft 6? i’m 120 and 5 ft 3! i dunno, i think it sends the wrong message. she looks too thin to me!

i got the dressing at my regular grocery store!

  • Lindsay May 13, 2009, 5:24 am

I never watch that show…seems like everyone else in the world does though! Glad the run went well, you are speedy (compared to me) and a goofball!
