Free to Sweat

in All Posts

I LOVE having Fridays off from work — Thank GOD for alternate work weeks (every company should do this).  Having Friday off lets me be free to sweat away the morning.  I love it!

I woke up early and fueled with a yummy breakfast:

CIMG2820

Hodgson’s InstaBake pancakes, a sliced banana, maple syrup for dipping, and coffee with H&H.

After letting breakfast settle for about 30 minutes, I headed to the gym and hopped on the elliptical.   According to my Training Plan, I was suppose to run 5.0 miles today, but truthfully — my knees were NOT up to the challenge.  They have been irritating me lately and I can literally feel the anterior cartilage in each knee popping out of place every time I extend my leg. (I know way too much about the knees for a layperson).  Oh, chrondromalcia…. I hate you. A lot.

I did 20 comfortable minutes on the elliptical and then headed to 1 hour yoga class.  This was a VERY challenging yoga class! My abs were shaking and my arms felt all rubbery halfway through!

AND THEN, I came home and did Level 1 of the 30 Day Shred Challenge.  Today was my last day on Level 1, and I am soooo excited/nervous to move onto Level 2! :)  I have to say that I can definitely see a difference in my abs and arms after doing the Shred for 10 days.  It is a GREAT workout video and I’m loving the challenge.

The large pancake breakfast carried me through my workouts, but by the time I was done, I was pretty hungry!

CIMG2824

ANNOUNCEMENT:  Oikos is WAYYYY better than Chobani!  Oh my — it’s like fluffy, creamy goodness!  I tried the Vanilla flavor and give it two thumbs up.

I mixed my Oikos with granola and strawberries.

CIMG2829

Guess what?  Maggie likes Oikos, too!

CIMG2825

As does James!

CIMG2828

MMMM! 🙂

If you have a pet, what "treats" do you give them?  Maggie and James like apple,  spinach leaves, sweet potato, plain yogurt (and apparently Oikos), carrots, and turkey meat.  :)  Yea…. they’re spoiled!

    Cute!!

My kitties love greek yogurt, milk and sour cream. My Georgy kitty like veggies, also.

  • Laura March 13, 2009, 7:48 am

Most government offices have alternate work schedules, but mine doesn’t. 🙁

My dog LOVES peanut butter! If he hears me say it, his ears perk up and he starts licking his lips. My weird cat doesn’t like to eat. She smells her food and tries to bury it. She does the same thing to the dog’s food, haha.

  • seesaraheat March 13, 2009, 7:50 am

My Suzie (a beagle-basset mix) loves peanut butter, she can even tell when I’ve eaten it and starts licking my face!

She also gets yogurt, cooked carrots and grapes, hahaha.

I tried to give her a piece of an apple once but she wouldn’t touch it. Dogs are hilarious!

  • Becca March 13, 2009, 7:50 am

My cat liked tuna up until we tried mixing a medication in with it. He might like it again now…

The “girls” love banana, apple, pb, potato bread, yogurt…the westie loves when i used canned pumpkin because she gets a bit!

  • Brandi March 13, 2009, 7:50 am

I WISH VT would let us do weeks like that – that’s the bad thing about working at a state agency – it’s gotta be a university wide decision, which means it’ll never happen :\

My cat loves yogurt! Plain yogurt, some ice cream.

  • VeggieGirl March 13, 2009, 7:51 am

So sorry about your knee trouble 🙁 Hang in there!!

    Enjoy your day off!!

Ahh, you know the situation with my dog already 🙁

  • Betsy March 13, 2009, 7:51 am

I had one of those vanilla Oikos yesterday and I agree… sooo good! My cats love fresh greens, and one of them likes beef jerky. Weird!

  • greendogwine March 13, 2009, 7:53 am

Lando loves peppers, black olives, oranges, apples (and of course PB) 🙂

I love Maggie and James! Do I ever tell you that? 🙂

  • Meghann March 13, 2009, 7:53 am

awww… bummer about your knee. 🙁

Melissa might be comin gup for the Tri tomorrow! And my Dad is definitely having the BBQ after the Tri I told him you were coming and I went ahead and said Kristien might be coming, which he is invited and welcomed to come. I think hes going to grill burgers and I told him to get some large portabella caps to grill as well.

  • carolinebee March 13, 2009, 7:54 am

When i finally DO get a job 😀 I am so proposing the alternate schedge, it sounds so awesome…kind of like the perfect 3 day weekends I scheduled for myself in college! I love the plain oikos, chobani is second i think- but i’m so torn with the price…freakin dannon is like 10 for a dollar! Have a great day with your babies!

  • kdrociak March 13, 2009, 7:55 am

Oh man – That is TOO CUTE!!! Glad to see you and the pups are enjoying OIKOS!

For those of you who haven’t been visited by the Oikos fairy yet, you can visit this link for coupons:http://coupons.stonyfield.com/new_coupon3.cfm

What cute pictures 🙂 My dog is obssessed with bananas haha he can hear the peel from like 10 miles away

  • bb March 13, 2009, 7:59 am

We tried very hard not to give our puppy human food because Hubs doesn’t want her to “beg” when we are eating…but I totally cheated and started giving her popcorn.

When she hears it popping she sits by the microwave very patiently. I always spill it on the floor when rip open the bag…she loves it. It’s the cutest thing!

  • Elsa March 13, 2009, 8:02 am

I am so jealous of your Fridays off! What a difference you weekends must be to have that extra day!
My pup LOVES peanut butter. He actually has his own jar.
Have a great rest of the day!

  • Beth March 13, 2009, 8:03 am

I think level 2 is actually the hardest Shred level! 🙂

  • Matt March 13, 2009, 8:04 am

We usually give my dog the extra rice, potatoes, and rolls from dinner. I guess that’s why he’s fat!

  • Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) March 13, 2009, 8:06 am

Yummy pancakes! And yay for yoga!

My dogs love carrots and apples. They go nuts when we start cutting veggies and fruit!

  • Erica March 13, 2009, 8:06 am

WOW! What a great workout you had this morning. I’m so jealous that you can eat, wait a half hour and then workout! I have to wait at least an hour (more if possible)….guess my tummy is just super sensitive.

Again, I am SO SO excited to try Oikos! I am going to the store either tonight or tomorrow. Whoooaaa hooo! I will be posting a review too.

Cute pics of the pups. We give Frank cheese. He is a HUGE cheese fan. He also gets steak on his birthday

  • therunningaddict March 13, 2009, 8:17 am

    Wow so much working out!!!
    Good job!

  • tfh March 13, 2009, 8:21 am

Yuck, chrondomalacia. Sounds like a wonderful yoga class, though, and congratulations for finishing the last day of shred level 1! You’re getting strong!

  • Amanda @ Fake Ginger March 13, 2009, 8:23 am

    Your puppies are so cute!

My dog loves eggs. My parents always did “Sunday eggs” for our dogs growing up because they said eggs keep their coat shiny so I try to make eggs for my Duke every once in a while.

He also loves those doggy ice cream cups. We live in Alabama so during the summer he gets them a lot.

  • choco9 March 13, 2009, 8:24 am

My cat Meowzers eats shrimp. He does a show for shrimp. It is quite hilarious.

  • Erin March 13, 2009, 8:28 am

I adore sweaty mornings! Yours sounds AWESOME.
That yogurt does look so fluffy!! Yummy!

  • Hallie March 13, 2009, 8:29 am

My pup hates vegetables! She won’t even eat one lettuce leaf. But she gets cold cuts (we hide her medicine in it), and the wayward tortilla chip or peanut that falls on the floor.

The BEST thing to do if you want some entertainment is to give a dog an near-empty jar of peanut butter. My dog goes to TOWN and manages to get the jar nearly totally clean. I collect jars from people at work just for her. She LOVES it and it’s hilarious to watch.

  • talieworld March 13, 2009, 8:30 am

    Great workouts!!

    Love the pancake breaskfast. 🙂

  • thechiclife March 13, 2009, 8:31 am

Sorry about your knees…my wrist won’t let me do yoga any more, which makes me sad, but I’m hoping I can squeeze a couple yoga workouts in now and again.

We let our dog lick our yogurt cups, too, sometimes. He also really likes peanut butter. This morning, I made PB WW Toast and he came running in before I even opened the jar…I don’t know how he knew I was opening PB! Must have been the twisting-lid sound? lol

  • dcelestine March 13, 2009, 8:32 am

Oops…forgot to add, he also really likes apples. I use one of those cutting/coring gadgets when I eat mine and when he hears that he really comes running!

  • Krista March 13, 2009, 8:43 am

I bought some OIKOS last time I was in the States and loved it! Unfortunately, while we have some Stoneyfield yougurt in Canada, Oikos is not one of them! 🙁

I have 3 kitties. One is very picky but the old guy and my kitten will eat just about anything!!! The baby especially! 🙂

  • Run Saraaah March 13, 2009, 8:45 am

My doggie loves carrots, Cheerios and popcorn…but he will eat absolutely anything!

  • Lindsay March 13, 2009, 8:51 am

I have cats and they only eat dry food but when it's their birthday time (only an estimate of when they were born – both strays) I have them split a can of wet cat food. (or recently when I was gone for 9 days and they had to deal with me being gone for so long 🙂

But in terms of human food, one of them loves mac & cheese and tortilla chips (or anything that has salt on it.) I'm also a vegetarian but eat the fake meat substitute and she'll even eat the fake sausage and fake turkey meat too! Which just says to me, no one can tell a difference!

Do you ever "cook" for your dogs? I've heard of people actually heating and making a meal for their dogs and then baking their own doggie treats too.

  • Hi! I'm Erin March 13, 2009, 8:56 am

I have today off, too, but that’s because I took it as a vacation day. I have company visiting from out of town!

Do you think plain Greek yogurt tastes too much like sour cream?

I have a on-going game with my dog to see what she will and won’t eat. Of course, I don’t give her any of the things that are toxic for dogs, but whenever I’m cooking I offer her a piece of something. So far the only things she’s not interested in are sugar snap peas and limes.

  • healthy ashley March 13, 2009, 8:57 am

I’ve been doing the shred and can’t believe how tough it is!

    Enjoy your day off 🙂

  • Haleigh March 13, 2009, 9:01 am

Mmmm.. just look at the creaminess of that yogurt! My dogs love to eat about anything! My dachshund loves to take his food from his food bowl and bring it into the living room and eat it, it’s hilarious!

  • Anonymous March 13, 2009, 9:03 am

My little doggie LOVES popcorn and carrots! Goes crazy over them actually!

  • Melissa March 13, 2009, 9:09 am

I am going to have to agree with you on the knee thing! Mine have been…..okay…….but I can definitely tell when I overdo it!

Baylee LOVES carrots, PB, and cauliflower!

  • Jess March 13, 2009, 9:15 am

I hate when the cartiledge moves likes. Good decision on your part to take it easy!

  • angelcubbie March 13, 2009, 9:32 am

My puppy loved anything and everything that I ate, however, she gulped it down so fast I don’t think she even actually tasted anything, she just wanted it because I was eating it. lol

What happened to your heart rate moniter, are you having it replaced or fixed?

  • Anonymous March 13, 2009, 9:36 am

I thought my dog was the only crazy one who liked spinach leaves – glad to hear he is not alone 🙂 He also loves carrots and cottage cheese – he is a spoiled brat. Love your blog!

  • Shannon March 13, 2009, 9:40 am

omg you kill me. i love your dogs. my dog Libby loves carrots. 🙂

  • Sarah (lovINmytummy) March 13, 2009, 9:47 am

My pets (my girls) have light ice cream with their daddy every night.

  • simplyfabulousnow March 13, 2009, 10:16 am

Wow, loads of working out today! I bet you feel great! Amazing looking breakfast…
    Enjoy your FRIDAY!

    Leah

  • K March 13, 2009, 10:19 am

My dogs THINK they like veggies but they don’t – they scrambled to get them but then they take whatever it is I gave them and chew on it, then spit it out! Annoying!!

I feel your knee problems 🙁 Boooo!

  • aron March 13, 2009, 10:28 am

both my dogs favorite treats are ice cubes 🙂 lol so random!

It was my dog Kylie’s birthday the other night so I bought them Frosty Paws… they are little ice cream cups for dogs. They love them!

  • fitforfree March 13, 2009, 10:32 am

apple, sweet potato, and frozen mixed veggies (random, but he LOVES them, esp. when still frozen!)

awesome that you can see results in 10 days!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point March 13, 2009, 10:32 am

Lindsey – i love to cook for the dogs. i made them rice and chicken the other day 🙂

Hi! I’m Erin – I had to slowly get myself used to the taste of plain yogurt, although i dont think i’ve ever tried plain greek yogurt. i weened myself off the fake sugar sweet by adding honey to my yogurt and then slowly using less and less.

angelcubbie – its sitting in my back step and it really needs to be sent to polar for a new battery. im just lazy. and my printer is out of ink so i can’t print the receipt. 🙂

  • Lindsay March 13, 2009, 10:41 am

I like Fage Greek yogurt the best! My pups are hoovers while I cook, anything I drop is theirs. I stop then before they eat bad stuff, but I drop a lot on purpose. 🙂

  • Lisa D. March 13, 2009, 10:55 am

o no! I’m so sad you said oikos is better than chobani. I try not to buy it because it’s more expensive but maybe I’ll have to give it a try. and my dog loves most human food, but her favorite is pizza crust(you better leave her a bite when you’re eating or she gets sooooo sad!)

  • Angie (Losing It and Loving It) March 13, 2009, 11:01 am

Your breakfast looks tasty! Sounds like you got a great workout in today. I did strength/ab work today (Turbo Jam 3T workout).

As for our Basset Hound, he loves to grab whatever he can that falls to the floor. We have to be very careful as he has had tummy issues in the past but one of his favorites is edamame. Hope it’s not harmful, haven’t found anything to say though like I have found that grapes and raisins can cause renal failure. Scary and I had no clue.

  • Sarah W. March 13, 2009, 11:16 am

    too cute they like yogurt!

I don’t feed my cats any table scraps – they don’t beg for it.

My hubby gives one of our cats ice cream tho – bad hubby!

My first cat (he lived w/ my parents) would come RUNNING everytime I cracked open a banana or my dad cut into a cantelooupe – weird cat!!! he would BEGGG until you gave him banana or canteloup!

  • Trish March 13, 2009, 11:34 am

I try to limit my cat to actual cat food. She’s on a special vet mandated diet. Of course, when she sits on my lap when I am eating lunch it doesn’t stop her from trying to steal my sandwich right off of my plate! 🙂

  • lauren March 13, 2009, 11:44 am

man! I missed the giveaway. I love Oikos! that is the only greek yogurt they carry in my grocery store, so I always stock up!

  • jane March 13, 2009, 12:03 pm

my dog pretty much will only eat dog food unless there is “human food” on top. we make extra rice and quinoa, microwave boca burgers, or pour soymilk on top of his food just so he’ll eat it. let’s just say, he knows how to work his owners!

  • Kailey (SnackFace) March 13, 2009, 12:07 pm

Mmm I love oikos too! It’s been too long since I’ve had it though. The daily maggie pic helps me get through the day, I swear! My pups like carrots, broccoli stems, green beans and disgusting things they pull from the garbage cans.

  • Quinn March 13, 2009, 12:09 pm

Thumper LOVES Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, any meat product and edamame!

Good for you with those workouts today!

  • Ali March 13, 2009, 12:12 pm

Oscar (my wiener dog)loves cheese and egg whites. I give he those sometimes when I am eat/cooking with them because he is so darn cute!

  • lilveggiepatch March 13, 2009, 1:24 pm

My dog love frozen cheese cubes (don’t ask how we figured that one out!) and my cat likes all kinds of soy, but rarely milk. Strange kitty!

  • Melissa (Nibbles and Wiggles) March 13, 2009, 1:29 pm

Truthfully my pups will eat anything (except bananas). They love all sorts of fruits and veggies – this is what happens with a vegetarian for a mother 😉

  • just me March 13, 2009, 1:45 pm

i thought you weren’t supposed to feed dogs dairy products? oh well!

    my puppies love carrots…and rice!

  • Tammy March 13, 2009, 1:47 pm

I give my doggy baby carrots, 1 T of plain canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling — giving just 1 or 2 T is very good for dogs’ digestive tracts), pieces of apple, green beans and tuna juice. My kitty loves bonito flakes and tuna juice, too.

  • eatingRD March 13, 2009, 1:49 pm

Oh my goodness, we used to give our daisy doo licks of the empty yogurt jars too! Every time she heard us open one up she would come running, oh good memories. Our cats loved canteloupe too and our one cat was particulary fond of apples. She loved to bite the last of the core! Pets are just so funny and brighten our lives 🙂
I’m wanting to try a 1/2 triatholon in the future, does meghann have training tips?

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point March 13, 2009, 2:43 pm

melissa – dogs LOVE yogurt and i had a vet tell me its good for their digestion because of the natural bacteria.

eating rd – check this out: http://www.healthytippingpoint.com/2008/12/story-of-my-dq.html

haha!! this is meghann’s first tri. my advice is bring water to wash off your feet from the swim to the bike. 🙂

  • Erin of Care to Eat March 13, 2009, 9:23 pm

Yay! Nice workouts! SOrry about your knees 🙁
I don’t give my kitties treats. I’m a bad mommy! But I love on them constantly so I hope that makes up for it!

  • Wiggs (The Beholder) March 13, 2009, 10:20 pm

Your dogs are so sweet! I’m visiting my parents right now, and they give their dog (aka, my replacement) the leftover skin from their smoked salmon. He loves it. I’ve never seen a dog so crazy over something so disgusting. (I’m staying with my parents this week, so my blog has basically turned into Barkis corner).

  • eatingRD March 14, 2009, 9:58 am

Thanks for the great advice! I will keep that in mind because the swimming aspect is what I need to work on 🙂 It will still be awhile before I can really try one. I’m looking to maybe get my own road bike! But, I’m going to have to save for a long time haha

  • Candi March 14, 2009, 5:19 pm

My old dog Zero used to LOVE raw broccoli stalks — just peel them and it’s like a big green dog-bone/toothbrush! Plus it’s less wasteful because they would have totally been in the trash otherwise.

  • Miranda March 15, 2009, 11:34 am

I love your site. I am also from Orlando!!!

  • Meredith (Pursuing Balance) March 17, 2009, 8:52 am

Have you heard of Frosty Paws? They are little ice cream cups for dogs! They’re located in the ice cream section at Publix. We used to give them to our dogs on their birthdays. 🙂
