Pumpkin Seeker

I have been stalking the supermarket for the return of Libby’s pumpkin (it’s seasonal).  But nothing yet!  Labor Day is around the corner! Summer is OVER!  Where is the pumpkin!?

IMG_1390

Organic pumpkin is not the same as the Libby’s brand, unfortunately.

Is pumpkin available where you live yet?  Last December, I bought a case of pumpkin and made it part way through spring on my stash!

Non-pumpkiny afternoon snack:

IMG_1369

Melon and cashews!  A summer snack.  :)

Post-work, the Husband took me to his clinic for an acupuncture treatment.  It was very relaxing.  I also had cupping done on my back because my lower back has been aching with all my fast running.

IMG_1380

He’s officially treating patients now, which is so exciting!

The completed waiting room (I can’t take credit for this; my mother-in-law designed it… she has a good eye!):

After all that Chinese medicine, I was craving some Asian-inspired stir fry for dinner.

Perfect Baked tofu, brown rice, and steamed broccoli with soy sauce.

More House Hunters is on the agenda!  :)

I wish my bf could give me treatment of some sort. He’s an attorney so I guess I’m all set if I get in trouble…. I’d rather have a back rub.

Haven’t checked, but I swear they carry pumpkin year round here. Maybe it’s a New England thing? I mean, clearly we need to have pumpkin, apple cider, and maple syrup available at all times to live up here…

No pumpkin here in the midwest! The Kroger people probably think I’m stalking aisle 3 :)

I remember there was a pumpkin shortage last year due to drought, so maybe the shortage continues? I looked a few months ago and couldn’t find pumpkin, but have been meaning to look this week. Hope we can find it!

Ugh, I can’t find pumpkin! I didn’t buy any last year because I bought pumpkins from a farm and roasted them (and froze it). I ate it too fast! So, I am really ready to get my hands on some! I will be stocking up too!

I think our stores must carry it year round because I bought some a few weeks ago. But they only had one row of it so I’m assuming they just carry a small amount until fall is in full force.

I just bought 2 cans of the same organic pumpkin that’s in your picture! I like Libby’s too, I’m not that picky :-) I decided that my strategy is going to be to pick up 2-4 cans every week at the store so I have a good supply for the winter months! I’m so addicted to pumpkin overnight oats, and of course I need some to make pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin pancakes… basically pumpkin everything :-)

i really enjoy the 365 brand pumpkin from whole foods, but i hear what youre saying about libbys. so amazing. i recently incorporated pumpkin into my traditional breakfast ‘souffle’. usually i do 1 egg + 1 tbs peanut butter + 1 tbs flax seed. all mixed up in a ramekin and microwaved for 2 min. its my staple. but ohh i started adding a couple spoonfuls of pumpkin. topped with maple syrup and cinnamon. its pumpkin pie for breakfast!!

I’m confused…. can you explain why you use canned pumpkin (especially Libby’s brand) instead of fresh pumpkin? I’m in New Zealand (originally from the UK) and don’t think I’ve seen it canned here, although it’s available fresh all year round. What do you think I should add/ do to fresh pumpkin to approximate the canned stuff?

    • Naomi
      September 1, 2010 | 1:42 am

Hi Carin, I’m in Australia so it’s sort of the same. I think the canned stuff is sort of more concentrated and just easier to use as you don’t have to cook it and blend it. I have a US Foods store not too far from me so I have bought it there before but I’ve never seen it anywhere else. If you cook and mash / blend it it’ll be the same.

On to the pumpkin topic, my local Wholefoods carry the organic pumpkin that you showed on the picture. I haven’t had Libby’s brand yet…so I must find this brand. Is it going to be sold at health food stores or any supermarket like Ralph’s, Vons and etc?

I honestly don’t recall ever being unable to buy it in the summer anywhere I lived, and we moved to many states growing up. So I can’t help you on this one. I haven’t had canned pumpkin in over a year. The store that carries Libbys in Dublin kept being let down by their stockists in the US. I had 2 cans left last year and my neighbour who is from Florida was having cravings , so I handed over my last can.

I’m still searching for pumpkin, too. I definitely agree, organic pumpkin from WH is just NOT the same! Hopefully we get a hold of it soon, or there will be issues :)

With the shortage, I haven’t been able to find pumpkin at the stores. I even checked last week. My only source has been the occasional purchase from the organic/green dog shop. Yep. They actually ordered a bunch when they heard about the shortage. It’s just pure pumpkin puree so it’s not like I’m eating dog food. (Still weird, though, I admit.)

I have been hording three cans since last year and I found those on clearance at Target of all places. I had been searching high and low and when I found them, I literally jumped up and down. My husband thought I had lost my mind.

This year, I am going too raid the store and by what I need as soon as I find it so I don’t have to worry about it anymore!

    Crazy, right?

    Well, you know the deal.

At my grocery store, there has been a sign up about the pumpkin shortage since last winter, and they haven’t had one can yet! However, there is another smaller grocery store in town that always has canned pumpkin on the shelves. Not sure why that is.

I have pumpkin stocked up. Not Libby’s though…and I’m not sure if it’s in the stores always – it’s in the baking aisle for me…which I tend to frequent ;)

I’ve been searching out pumpkin too and can’t find it. So disappointing. I love my pumpkin flavor and will need it for fall.

I recently started acupuncture treatments for my allergies. I haven’t been doing it long enough to know if it is working, but I am excited to give it a chance.

I actually grew my own pumpkins this year. I have about 15 of them. I can’t wait to can them (in chunks, puree is unsafe) and use them all winter long!

If you send me your address I would be happy to send you a few cans!

The pumpkin stays here all throughout the year. And I actually have a can in my pantry right now! What’s funny is that I never really think about it because I know I can have some any time I want!

Haha…thats pretty funny, I like the organic pumpkin! I have the same one in your picutre. I just keep buying them and buying them at the store so I noticed yesterday I have 3 cans in my pantry. I like the libby’s too but I felt like the organic one tasted more like fresh pumpkin which I roasted for the first time last year and was a HUGE hit with my family. I can get pumpkin all year round at my HEB (organic or Libby’s) but I still see September as the start of pumpkin season! Mmmm, pumpkin spice lattes…..

I feed my animals a raw diet, & pumpkin is an important component of it. Last yr I had to practically buy out the store. It’s only available seasonally here, too (NY) — we moved here from TX, where it was always available yr round, so that was very surprising to me.

I’ve been on the lookout too, almost out

Funny you should mention the pumpkin hunt – I am planning on starting mine tonight! It’s September, I’m allowed to switch to my fall-cravings foods even if it is 93 degrees out, right?!?
