Spin Bike

I haven’t gone to spin class in AGES, but I always loved it.  I quit the gym last month, but my membership expires on the 14th.  Since the boys were heading to the gym, I figured I’d tag along and create my own spin bike routine.

Here’s what I did with the accompanying song.  The whole routine took 30 minutes and left me dripping in sweat.  Oh, please don’t judge me by my song choices.

Positions:

  • Seated
  • “Running” –> hands on the top of the bars and standing up straight
  • Crouched –> hands on the drop bars, back flat, butt out over the seat.

  • SONG 1: “Can’t be Tamed” by Miley Cyrus:  2 minute warm-up at medium pace and medium resistance.  End with running intervals at medium resistance.

  • SONG 2: “Blah, Blah, Blah” by Ke$ha: Repeating intervals of seated, running, and crouched for 30 seconds each at medium pace and medium resistance.

  • SONG 3:  “Airplanes” by B.O.B.:  Long, slow seated climb at medium pace with increasing resistance until it’s very, very hard to pedal.

  • SONG 4: “Whatcha Say” by Jason Derulo: Seated sprints of 1 minute followed by a 30 second rest at high pace and medium resistance.

  • SONG 5: “Numb/Encore” by Jay-Z and Linkin Park:  Repeating intervals of seated, running, and crouched for 30 seconds each at medium pace and medium resistance.

  • SONG 6: “Decode” by Paramore:  Long, slow run at medium pace with high resistance.

  • SONG 7:  “Uprising” by Muse:  Long, slow seated climb at medium pace with increasing resistance until it’s very, very hard to pedal.

  • SONG 8: “Imma Be” by Black Eyed Peas:  Running intervals at medium resistance, end with a 1-minute cool down.

It was a GREAT workout.  The boys were still lifting when I finished, so I walked on the treadmill for 2.0 miles in 32 minutes.

Do you take spin classes?  Or prefer to cycle outside?

I love spin classes but i’m too poor to belong to a gym that has them, so i do it outside. can’t beat outdoors in the summer in colorado though, so I’m not complaining 🙂

  • Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin June 10, 2010, 3:39 pm

I’ve never taken a spinning class but really want to try! I bike outside which I love, but I’ve heard spinning gives you an awesome workout.

    • Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday June 11, 2010, 8:36 am

Spinning IS a great workout. It’s probably one of the toughest cardiovascular classes in the gym, plus it really targets your leg muscles. You can definitely feel it the next day!

  • megan June 10, 2010, 3:42 pm

i never really thought to make up my own spin routine. are the spin bikes with the rest of the equipment? at my gym they’re in their own room…i think it’s locked when there’s no spin class

    • caitlin June 10, 2010, 3:45 pm

its in a separate room but people can use it when there aren’t classes going on!

  • Freya @ Brit Chick Runs June 10, 2010, 3:43 pm

Bah, I would kill to go to a spin class! It looks like such an awesome workout – they just don’t have any within a half hour drive of me 🙁
I love your sandwich! Holy yum 🙂

  • Carolyn @ lovinlosing June 10, 2010, 3:45 pm

I’ve never been much into spinning b/c my butt always hurt too much. But since now I have bike shorts and a gel seat and am preparing my butt for a triathlon maybe I’ll take up spinning after the triathlon. 🙂

  • Jessica @ Jessica Balances June 10, 2010, 3:45 pm

Haha I have almost all of those songs on my iPod, too! I used to go to spin classes, but I haven’t been in a while. I have a love/hate relationship with them… I hate going, but once the class is over, I’m always so glad I went. I typically prefer to do workouts that I really look forward to… But that feeling after a good spin class is pretty awesome!

  • Therese June 10, 2010, 3:49 pm

I love, love, LOVE spin class although I haven’t been in a while due to the awesome weather (I’d much rather be outside). I’m always SO proud of myself when I finish a class and it’s helped my running tremendously! If I had a spin bike at home I’d probably never leave the house!

  • Clare June 10, 2010, 3:56 pm

LOVE spin class, it kicks my ass (most of the time, some teachers are lame though, so I avoid their classes). It’s annoying though that sometimes now when I hear a certain songs I have flashes to switchbacks and rolling hills. That may be a problem. Spin keeps me from having to ride in NYC, which scares the bejeezus out of me (but I don’t have a real bike so that might stop me too, huh?) Bikers yell at you. Well, at least in Central Park they do. I actually just took a spin certification class so now I just have to start teaching! Scary.

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing June 10, 2010, 4:00 pm

That sounds like a great workout!! I’d LOVE to take a spin class if I could!

  • Jessica @ How Sweet June 10, 2010, 4:02 pm

I love spinning! I am an instuctor, but haven’t taugh since January. I actually like taking it more than teaching, because I get a better workout since I’m focused.

  • Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) June 10, 2010, 4:02 pm

I have never taken a spin class, but I think it would be fun. I am not a good bike rider. I normally end up flying over the handle bars…at least when I mountain bike. Sounds like a great workout! That sandwich looks so good! Great way to nourish after a great workout!

  • Allison June 10, 2010, 4:04 pm

I would much rather do any and all exercising OUTSIDE. Treadmills, spin bikes covered in other peoples stank when I could be out enjoying the fantastic WI weather? no contest. I even run outside all winter long. I have a feeling if I lived somewhere with weather like FL I’d be signing a different tune though (heat and humidity..eeeegh!). Looks like a great ad hoc workout!

  • Dorry June 10, 2010, 4:04 pm

I’ve taken spin classes and loved being pushed by the instructor but nothing beats riding outdoors!

  • VeggieGirl June 10, 2010, 4:05 pm

I love spinning!! I have just moved to a new city so I don’t know who the good spin instructors are at my new gym. I made up a great playlist and am lucky enough to have a spin bike in my apartment gym (random – someone must love spinning in the building) so I’ve been using that. Its such a great workout. Its all about good music!

  • Raya June 10, 2010, 4:06 pm

I loooove spin class, but it always makes my butt hurt!

  • vanillavivante June 10, 2010, 4:08 pm

I remember at some point you said you wanted to incorporate more veggies into your diet, and I have to say, I’ve been admiring your veggie-ful sandwiches and lunches!! So pretty, and they sound delicious!

  • Karla June 10, 2010, 4:10 pm

I love spin classes but since I moved to upstate NY, the classes here aren’t very good 🙁 The music is SUPER boring! (Ben Folds for spinning? I think not!) Makes me want to be a spin instructor to make it more fun!

  • Kristin June 10, 2010, 4:10 pm

Hey! That’s a pretty good spin routine! I teach spinning, have you ever thought about getting certitified? I use to think I liked riding indoors better than outdoors (safer) but I’ve gotten more comfortable on the bike training for an olympic distance tri now I LOVE riding outside. I still think spinning keeps your legs in shape over the winter (if you experience winter where you live!).

  • Caroline June 10, 2010, 4:12 pm

I love your playlist, many of those songs were actually on my ipod for my run the other day! Good choices 🙂 I like spinning but I enjoy riding outside more. I NEED to get my bike tuned though, I haven’t ridden it since last summer!!

  • Karen @ Not Just Celery June 10, 2010, 4:13 pm

I love spin class! I was always scared to try it then went with a friend about a year and a half ago and got hooked! Now I go 2x a week. The instructor is the most important thing, I’m lucky to have found 2 great ones at my gym! I love instructors who push, yell, and motivate you! Music is 2nd most important – looks like you worked out to some great songs today!

  • Rachel June 10, 2010, 4:13 pm

I love spin class AND biking outside. They are both awesome and wonderful in their own ways!

  • Stephanie J June 10, 2010, 4:14 pm

I’m obsessed with spin class, particularly my class that’s offered at Gold’s Gym called RPM. It’s specifically designed and choreographed to spike and lower the heart rate and burn calories (they say an avg. of 600 per hour). It’s a beast of a workout but you can’t help but feel fantastic at the end of it. It’s also offered on that exact type of bike you pictured in your post!

  • Megan @ The Daily Sweat June 10, 2010, 4:21 pm

I use spin classes to keep in cycling shape over the winter months. But once it warms up, I get outside. Fans can’t give you the “wind in your face” feeling very well.

  • Sarah @ See Sarah Eat June 10, 2010, 4:21 pm

I loooove spin classes but it’s been several months since I’ve taken one. The gym I belong to now doesn’t have any but they do have spin bikes, so I might just have to borrow your routine next time 🙂

  • Catie June 10, 2010, 4:23 pm

I love that the first 5 songs I rocked out to on my run today!!! Haha

  • Helen June 10, 2010, 4:24 pm

Loving your choice of music, especially linkin park + jz, brilliant song. I’ve never done a spinning class and even when the bikes are free I’ve never been on one. Maybe I should try it out by doing my own training routine…..I do like cycling outside but haven’t got my own bike with me as it’s at my parents.

  • Lisa June 10, 2010, 4:24 pm

Since the Spin class at my gym is ALWAYS full, I prefer to bike outside.

  • Summer June 10, 2010, 4:25 pm

Never took a spin class. It doesn’t seem like something I would like but I never thought I would like running either! I do bike outside but I am pulling my three year old behind me who just cries or the playground. So I never get much biking in. 🙂 LOL

  • samantha June 10, 2010, 4:29 pm

Great song list! I have most of those myself. 🙂

  • Camille June 10, 2010, 4:30 pm

That sandwich looks so so so good!
I love Spinning, I haven’t gone in a few weeks due to marathon training, but it is as great a workout as you will ever find!

  • kalli@fitandfortysomething June 10, 2010, 4:30 pm

    i love spinning-it is a great workout!

  • AnneJuliet June 10, 2010, 4:33 pm

i spin every tues/thurs morning (my fav teachers) before work. During training I add a run and strength afterwards, but i pretty much always to tues/thurs mornings all year round. i love it – such an invigorating way to start the day.

of course, i prefer riding outside, but on week days, in the city, with work and after work activities, getting a spin workout in feels awesome and is a good way to break up swims, runs and strength work.

a crap teacher can make me get off the bike and walk out though.

  • Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter June 10, 2010, 4:33 pm

I’m not the most coordinated person, so inside spinning is best for me 😉

  • ActiveEggplant June 10, 2010, 4:33 pm

I absolutely love spinning! I take a class every Wed evening (wish I could do more, but the studio at the gym doesn’t quite fit my schedule). I think spinning has REALLY helped me with road cycling and even with mountain biking. It’s great because you can work on power, form, etc without having to worry about getting hit by a car (or a tree!). I think the “sprints” on the spin bike also help with my turnover in running! Definitely a GREAT addition to a workout routine if you ask me!

  • jenny in new york June 10, 2010, 4:36 pm

I prefer to cycle outside. I recently spent a lot of $$$ on a new road bike so I have to put it to good use! The problem is… it’s hard to find open road to bike on in manhattan 😉

  • Run Sarah June 10, 2010, 4:40 pm

I just tried out a spin class and loved it! I’ll have to try out your routine though, it sounds awesome!

  • sirenjess June 10, 2010, 4:42 pm

I can’t ride a bike so I take spin classes. I love taking classes because it’s the perfect cross training for running and training for a marathon. At my gym we have some pretty kick ass instructors.
    Okay, I’m judging….Miley Cyrus?

  • Tami June 10, 2010, 4:46 pm

Jamie has free spinning podcasts that will kick your butt.

  • Christie June 10, 2010, 4:51 pm

I am actually a spinning instructor! I must admit though, I haven’t rode a bike outside since I was a young kid. Odd, huh? I think your playlist sounds fun and you’re right- spinning is definitely a great workout that you’ll sweat your butt off with, even for 30 minutes!!!

    ~Christie

  • Christy June 10, 2010, 4:52 pm

I do both. I spin usually two days a week as part of my bike days and then try and get out at least once a week on the “real” bike. But I take spin from some awesome instructors so I know I get ass workout!!

  • Samantha @ Health, Happiness & Skinny Jeans June 10, 2010, 5:03 pm

I love indoor spinning!! I attend class once a week but occasionally will go and do my own routine. I think I might want to teach classes someday thats how much I love it!

  • dotsie June 10, 2010, 5:10 pm

I love both cycling outdoors and spin classes. I do the spin class when daylight savings time kicks in, in the fall months–I really dislike this time of year. I do enjoy being outdoors and the get late at 8pm-ish thing!

  • Mary June 10, 2010, 5:15 pm

I really prefer biking outside but there is nothing like a good spin class to leave me drenched in sweat and feeling like a rock star when I’m done 🙂

ps. your song choices are epic.

  • Natalie @ Keep It Sassy June 10, 2010, 5:20 pm

I haven’t gotten up the nerve to take a spin class yet, but hopefully soon! The classes at my gym just look so intimidating, but I’ve heard it’s a lot of fun and a good challenge. Maybe I need to try this work out on my own first?

  • Heather (runningwithsass.com) June 10, 2010, 5:28 pm

good job on the workout. Some of your songs are too funny!

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) June 10, 2010, 5:29 pm

ooooh I love spin classes! But I will always love being outisde on my bike more 🙂

  • Rebecca @ How the Cookie's Crumble June 10, 2010, 5:35 pm

neither. spin class bores me and i just stare at the clock the whole time wondering when it will be done. i would like to get into cycling outside but have yet to start. i only have a mountain bike and think i would like a road bike, but i think i should probably make sure i like cycling before i invest the money! 🙂

  • Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine June 10, 2010, 5:41 pm

Last summer I got super into spinning, but I haven’t taken a class since!! Reading your playlist and the pace for each song really makes me miss it though…maybe I’ll take a class sometime soon!

  • Ashley M. [at] (never home)maker June 10, 2010, 5:46 pm

Hahah. I love it. “Don’t judge me by my song choices.” I’m the SAME WAY! I am kind of a music snob. But slap me on a bike or treadmill, and I’m Miley Cyrus and Jonas Brothers all the way. We got a spinning bike for home earlier in the spring. Haven’t been on it much yet because the weather has been so nice. But when it’s super hot out, I can’t wait to rock out to my guilty pleasures, too. <3

  • Sara June 10, 2010, 5:46 pm

Wow that looks so good. Wish I could get into the spinning thing. Maybe I will ahve to take a class sometime!

  • Amanda @ Eat to Live, Live to Run June 10, 2010, 5:51 pm

I love spinning, but I get bored with it if I do it too frequently. I think I’d love the freedom of cycling outdoors better if I wasn’t so darn scared that I’m gonna fall. My bike has been in the shop for going on 3 weeks now, so unfortunately I haven’t had any time to work on getting more comfortable since I fell a few weeks ago.

  • Jenny June 10, 2010, 6:01 pm

    Those are all great songs!

  • Courtney @ The Tasty Balance June 10, 2010, 6:16 pm

I love spin class! One of my all-time fave workouts!

  • Kelly @ Healthy Living With Kelly June 10, 2010, 6:18 pm

I prefer my bike on my trainer in my house! haha!

  • Amber K @ sparkpeople June 10, 2010, 6:19 pm

I tried to spin once and lasted about two minutes. My tailbone sticks out and it was hurting SOOO bad! Even with padded shorts, I don’t know how it can be done!

I don’t judge song choices. I listen to completely random music when I work out. Usually songs with cheesy or awful lyrics, but with amazing beats.

  • Vaala June 10, 2010, 6:23 pm

I go to spin class during the week and I’m on my bike in the weekends. I’d so prefer to always be on my bike but I’m a mountain biker and I can’t just head out for a blat round the forest before work so spin it is. Plus class is good for building muscles for those hills…

  • Krystina June 10, 2010, 6:33 pm

I’ve never taken a spin class but I LOVE using the bike at the gym. I do sitting/crouching intervals on the hills setting and end up dripping in sweat by the end of my work out.

  • Julia June 10, 2010, 7:09 pm

I love solo spin sesh’s! I feel like I get a lot more bang for my buck when i do; and I can make it as hard as I want! Awesome, Caitlin!

  • Kelli June 10, 2010, 7:18 pm

I made your almond butter sauce tonight and LOVED it!! It was perfect and quick!!

  • Sarah (Enjoying One Meal at a Time) June 10, 2010, 7:20 pm

Spin classes are nice for a intense sweat, and it’s also nice not to worry about traffic or planing a route out. But I love biking outdoors! It’s such a good way to see new places and have fun.

  • Kathleen June 10, 2010, 7:32 pm

this workout looks awesome and I can’t wait to find a stat bike to try it! I personally have every single one of those songs (minus Jason Derulo and plus Justin Bieber so I think I less major points) on my MP3 player so no judgment here. I like your taste in music 🙂

have u listened to the new Eclipse soundtrack? I downloaded it last night and adore it, especially the fist few songs through Florence and the Machine!!!

  • Katherine June 10, 2010, 7:36 pm

I don’t get how to stand on the bike. Everyone else makes it look smooth but I make it look like a three-year-old cheerleading (or a toddler because I inevitably fall over at some point)

do you have your own spin shoes?

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat June 10, 2010, 7:38 pm

I teach spin, so I guess I have to say that’s my preference! This might change though if I had a decent bike – I’ve never really done any hardcore outdoor biking, although it’s on my bucket list to get into it!
Your lunch looks delicious – so simple, but the photos are gorgeous! 🙂

  • lisa June 10, 2010, 7:41 pm

I’ve never tried a spin class, but I love riding my bike outside, especially on rail trails. I’ve always been hesitant on the road or in the woods, and I love the flat and paved rail trails I’ve been on.

  • Eliza June 10, 2010, 7:55 pm

I definitely prefer biking outdoors. I find it a lot more entertaining than spinning. That said, I do enjoy an occasional spin class when its rainy or cold out. Sometimes it is nice to get in some hard core intervals. Biking outside is acutally a lot different than spinning!

  • Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) June 10, 2010, 8:09 pm

I’ve actually never taken a spin class! I would never sub it for all of my biking, since I love the outdoors. But I think it would make for a fun workout now and then. 😀

  • Vicky June 10, 2010, 8:10 pm

I love spinning. I live in NY and go to http://www.flywheelsports.com for my workout. It is amazing, they post your stats online… estimated calories burned, distance, torq, etc. I tried other spinning studios… but this does it for me. Plus they do arm weights. I bike when I can outside…

  • Wendy June 10, 2010, 8:24 pm

For about two years, I took spin classes regularly enough to invest in clip shoes and padded shorts. But I recently invested in a road bike and I’m LOVING cycling outdoors.

P.S. I like your song choices. No judging here. 😉

  • Kelly June 10, 2010, 8:44 pm

Spin class used to be my thing. I went 3 days a week on days that I wasn’t running. After pushing too much I landed myself on the bench with a bad knee and hip injury. Now spinning feels awful on my knees! Thankful I’m back to running and I have a road bike 🙂

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin June 10, 2010, 8:47 pm

I’ve never taken a spin class. The soaking wet and red faced people walking out of the spin room at my gym has sort of scared me off! 😛

  • Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ June 10, 2010, 8:48 pm

I have a spinning bike at home and love working out on it set to music. If the music is fast then that means top speed if it’s slow that means a hill. It always keeps my body guessing and keeps each workout different. I’m always dripping with sweat, best workout.

  • Brynne June 10, 2010, 9:08 pm

I love spinning! That looks like a great workout, thanks Caitlin!

  • Alicia at Poise in Parma June 10, 2010, 9:18 pm

I see nothing wrong with that playlist! In fact, I might be borrowing it!

I’ve always wanted to try spinning, but I sprained my tailbone back in 2005 and it still gives me issues. I have to alter a lot of pilates poses because of it. I’m afraid 45 minutes on a bike seat might kill me!

  • Kellie June 10, 2010, 9:29 pm

I like to spin, I just have not been in awhile. It is such great cross training that I need to incorporate it more.

  • Emily Eats and Exercises June 10, 2010, 9:41 pm

I prefer outside, but I do a fair amount of spinning as well. I think what I really like about spinning though is someone else telling me what to do – I’m not sure I could be as motivated on my own as you were (even with a great playlist like that!)

  • Nora@LifeLifeEatRight June 10, 2010, 9:44 pm

I have taken spin classes a few times…and couldn’t move for days! It is such a great work out!

  • Wei-Wei June 10, 2010, 9:54 pm

I never knew what spinning was until I went to a gym and checked it out… It seems craaaaazy! My legs hurt just thinking about it. I always thought it was some fancypants new-equipment exercise; don’t ask me why, but I was picturing an exercise ball with an edge around the middle that you can stand on and it spins and you have to do something intense to stay on it.

My mind works in mysterious ways. Little did I know that spinning was just biking… I don’t do much of either but I’d like biking outside because I love biking in nature! 🙂

    Wei-Wei

  • Sydney June 10, 2010, 10:30 pm

I envy you for your ability to do spin classes. I’m one of those people who just get so frustrated when they’re not actually GOING anywhere while doing all that work. I can’t do treadmills either!

By the way your photos are absolutely beautiful… I have never seen such gorgeous perfect tomato slices!

  • Miranda @ MirandasJeans June 10, 2010, 10:32 pm

I love spin class but the instructor has to be right. The music has to be right. I’ve had a great couple of instructors and then because of my work schedule I had to change classes. The instructor now is quiet, does’t yell enouragements to us during the drills and his music is mellow – Norah Jones – are you effing kidding me Norah Jones in a spin class camon! Seriously. So right now I don’t go to spin class but am learning to love riding my mountain bike for longish rides.

  • Mary @ What's Cookin' with Mary June 10, 2010, 10:35 pm

I def prefer to work out/ cycle outside, but have always wanted to try a spin class. I’m a wimp! I need a buddy 😉

  • Faith @ lovelyascharged June 10, 2010, 11:04 pm

That soundtrack sounds Kick-ASS! Except for Muse, though. For some reason, they irritate the hell out of me! Never tried a spinning class, but I’d love to!

  • Cynthia (It All Changes) June 10, 2010, 11:30 pm

I’m afraid my butt would hurt to much to take spin so I go outdoors on my mountain bike.

  • Tara @ Food for Fuel June 11, 2010, 7:26 am

I love your playlist choice!! Pretty much all of those songs are on one of my workout mixes—whatever makes the time pass, right??

  • Chase @ The Chase Project June 11, 2010, 8:44 am

I teach spin and have my own at home spin bike and wouldn’t want it any other way!

  • Ashley June 11, 2010, 9:17 am

I LOVE spinning. I’ve been spinning for 4 years now. I go 3 times a week at 5:30AM. It is a great workout and jump starts the day in a great way!

  • Sarah June 11, 2010, 9:45 am

I attended one spin class and LOVED it. I don’t have a gym membership right now (all I do is yoga- that’s expensive enough for me!). But I would welcome a chance to take more classes.

  • Marissa June 11, 2010, 9:48 am

I love biking! I can go so much longer than I can with running, so I always feel like I get a better workout. I’m always dripping by the end! I use a recumbent bike (we bought it for my obese father… I’m pretty sure he’s only used it maybe 5 times max in the past 3 years.)

  • jessica June 11, 2010, 9:52 am

I absolutely love spin classes. I suffered an over use knee injury from running a few years ago and no longer run so I have taken up spinning since. I have the shoes that clip in the spin bike and it makes such a difference. I spin about 3 times a week and it’s still a challenge everytime!

  • Erika June 11, 2010, 11:53 am

I haven’t taken a spin class for a couple of years but I always enjoyed them. My teachers were tough!

  • Logan June 11, 2010, 5:06 pm

I love the workout I get from spinning but hate being in a stuffy, humid, dark spinning room sitting inches away from the person next to me. I only will go to the classes where the teacher actually turns on the fans in the room otherwise my face is extremely hot and red for hours after. I don’t understand how anyone can walk out after a class with no sweat on them.

thanks for sharing your workout! I don’t have a class offered at my gym and I really missed spinning. I couldn’t remember all that we did in class, but this was helpful to get a good base and get back into it on my own.

I don’t like anything organized..I do my own thing. I belonged to a gym and they kicked me off the spin bike because there wasn’t a “spin class” in session..so I left and quit the gym. I am an experienced cyclist but sometimes I don’t want to be on the raod for whatever reason so I bought a spin bike. I listen to music on my iphone and make up my own “intervals”..I like it and it is a lot easier to get ready..don’t need to be alert for traffic etc. Besides I hated the gym geeks!

I used to have a membership to LA fitness before I left for college and looooved it. Their spin classes are awesome! I have to admit I kind of miss those classes!
