Better Grilled Cheese

in All Posts

We are having a very relaxing mommy-Henry day. Nothing else to do. No conference calls to attend, no freelance deadlines to juggle.  Just me and my boy.  I like it!

Here’s my favorite way to liven up a grilled cheese sammie – an apple!

Mmmm.  Sharp cheddar cheese + slices of Golden Delicious.  Perfecto.

My other favorite mix-in:  dried apricots!  I also like adding greens, tempeh, sunflower seeds… Basically, everything tastes better with cheese.  True story.

On our {wide open} agenda for today:

  • Playground time
  • Running time
  • Nutella-straight-from-the-jar time (just for mommy, of course)

Have a good one!

What do you add to your grilled cheeses?

    Hummus!

  • Michelle @ A Healthy Mrs April 2, 2013, 12:57 pm

Mmmmmmm that grilled cheese looks delicious!
I don’t usually add much to mine, but I’m a big fan of putting a few types of cheese in them — cheese makes everything better! 🙂

  • Paige @ Your Trainer Paige April 2, 2013, 1:12 pm

Apples and cheddar is such a yummy combo! I used to get this..tortilla thingy back in the day- it was like a fried tortilla, apples (sweetened,) with melted cheese on top, haha

  • Emily @ The Swallow Flies April 2, 2013, 1:19 pm

Avocado is delicious on grilled cheese. And I am SO envious of your day — I could so use a nice, relaxing, nothing-on-the-agenda day. I just have to keep telling myself that summer IS coming!

This is not related to your post at all, but my sis and bro in law are doing this race and I figured you would love to hear about it. I do see, though, there isnt one in the carolinas! Stink!

Run from zombies for real 🙂

  • Sara @ fitcupcaker April 2, 2013, 1:52 pm

apple in a grilled cheese is different. I love it!

  • Joni April 2, 2013, 1:55 pm

Actually I started adding apple because of your website. 🙂

    It is so yummy!

  • Sarah @ Yogi in Action April 2, 2013, 1:56 pm

I like to add hot sauce! But that’s because I love all things spicy, and the hot sauce adds a nice tang. Probably wouldn’t mix well with the apple though…

  • Kelly April 2, 2013, 2:05 pm

I’m a big fan of adding apples to grilled cheese, too!

And you are absolutely right, everything does taste better with cheese!

  • Laura April 2, 2013, 2:05 pm

I like to add avacado and tomato. Sometimes dipped in soup. Perfect meal!

  • Amanda April 2, 2013, 2:06 pm

This might not be unique or anything, but I do love to add lettuce, tomato, and mayo (sometimes onions) to my grilled cheese. And if it’s plain grilled cheese, I MUST add a bowl of fresh made tomato soup to go with it.

  • Aerevyn Harteis April 2, 2013, 2:13 pm

    Browned fresh sage.

  • kristin April 2, 2013, 2:18 pm

Our favorite–> sharp cheddar with sliced tomatoes on whole wheat served with salsa and guacamole on the side
For a while, this was our dinner every Thursday night! Yum!

  • Kelsey April 2, 2013, 2:28 pm

I’ve replaced grilled cheese with grilled awesome: swiss, chicken, pesto, horseradish, onions, tomatoes. It’s my version of grilled cheese and makes EVERY taste bud in my mouth sing!

  • rebecca @ blueberry smiles April 2, 2013, 2:30 pm

I haven’t had a grilled cheese in years, but your photos are making me crave them!

  • Jill @ a Girl in Progress April 2, 2013, 2:35 pm

I usually try to put some protein in with my grilled cheese. I am a meat eater, so I’ll add turkey or ham and put the whole thing on the George Foreman grill with a bunch of veggies too. I guess at that point, it’s not really a grilled CHEESE anymore and just a grilled sandwich… 🙂

  • Katie @ Talk Less, Say More April 2, 2013, 2:47 pm

Your relaxing day sounds awesome! I had a mom call to reschedule her appt the other day because she couldn’t get her kid off the swing to make it for their appt. She kept apologizing but the sun was shining for the first time in DAYS and I couldn’t blame the kid – I’d just keep swinging too! 🙂

Apples! What a great idea! I make grilled cheese about three nights a week, mainly I add roasted peppers, spinach, jam, or figs (esp. With brie!). I love reading what others add…I now have some new ideas!

  • Carly @ Life in Training April 2, 2013, 2:58 pm

We had playground time today too. Love Spring!

My mum used to make me apricot jam and cheddar sandwiches for school lunch when I was 6 or 7 years old. I *loathed* them. Now, they sound delicious to me!!

  • Alexa April 2, 2013, 3:16 pm

Do you have a favorite sandwich press? I need one to make gluten free grilled cheeses taste even better. And Agreed on the apple!

  • Ashley April 2, 2013, 3:22 pm

I love a good spinach and mozarella grilled cheese or the classic grilled cheese with tomato. I recently discovered a food truck in LA that just makes grilled cheese and I plan on just following it around town for the rest of my life.

  • Amanda K. April 2, 2013, 3:40 pm

    avocado!! it’s soooo good.
i also like to add bacon and tomato, but at that point i don’t think it qualifies as a grilled cheese anymore 🙂

  • Tara April 2, 2013, 4:45 pm

I love eating tomatoes in my grilled cheese. A side of tomato basil soup never sounds bad either!

  • Erin @ The Elliptical Chronicles April 2, 2013, 4:51 pm

Avocado and sundried tomato are two grilled cheese additions I’ve had before and thought they were delicious!

    Enjoy your relaxing day!

  • floey April 2, 2013, 5:24 pm

have a wonderful day!! i loved spending one on one time with my mom when i was young

  • Jelena@FabLifePhD April 2, 2013, 5:59 pm

    Tuna spread for sure!
But speaking about apples, I love to add them in anything.
Apparently, Germans are great fans of apple sauce and they got me hooked quite fast

  • Amanda Perry @ Sistas of Strength April 2, 2013, 8:29 pm

I try to keep my Tuesdays like that (my husband and I own a gym so our situations are somewhat similar with work). It’s usually just me and my son and I love love love it! 🙂

  • Angela April 2, 2013, 9:16 pm

Yum!! That looks so delicious! I love it with some bacon too…but I know you’re not a bacon eater. 🙂

  • Christine @ BookishlyB April 2, 2013, 9:22 pm

My husband loves hot sauce or even jalapenos. Personally, I like to keep it traditional- some tomato if I’m feeling bold.

  • Catherine April 2, 2013, 9:29 pm

I eat grilled cheese at least once a week. It’s a staple in this home. I love mine with extra cheese, baby spinach, and a side of creamy soup. Mmmm. Have you tried giving Henry some grilled cheese? It was a huge hit with my (very picky) 9-month-old!

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) April 2, 2013, 11:09 pm

I love adding pear or apple to my grilled cheese. They are especially good with Gruyere cheese 🙂

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin April 3, 2013, 6:54 am

I love adding apples to my grilled cheese too! Especially with some fig jam spread on it.

  • Marty April 3, 2013, 7:38 am

I add tomatoes, thinly sliced, fresh basil leaves, and a mix of cheddar and plain old American cheese (melts great).

  • Ashlee@HisnHers April 3, 2013, 10:25 am

I always see the apple/cheese combo but haven’t tried it yet. I LOVE sweet & salty so I know it would be delicious! Mmm

  • Elizabeth @ Positive Change April 3, 2013, 10:41 am

Just like you I love adding apple slices as well!! So yummy!

  • Ja @Ja on the RUN April 3, 2013, 11:01 am

I love grilled cheese sandwich! hmmmm! 🙂

  • Kris April 3, 2013, 12:16 pm

I have a recipe that adds a layer of pureed white beans to increase the protein. I think it was in an article about making food more nutritious for kids.

  • Nicole @ Fruit 'N' Fitness April 3, 2013, 12:56 pm

This grilled cheese combo sounds great!

  • Alaina April 4, 2013, 1:07 pm

Just a question what bread are you using?

    • Caitlin April 4, 2013, 1:49 pm

      Udi
