While You Were Sleeping

in All Posts

It’s a fact of parenthood:  when the kid goes down for a nap, you go into overdrive (or underdrive and go back to sleep…).  The babe is napping!  You can do ANYTHING you want!

As Henry drifted off into dreamland, I debated:  Did I want to read more of my book or bake a snack?  I decided to bake.

If you’ve never made Oh She Glows 5 Ingredient No Bake Vegan Date Squares, you must!  They are SO tasty and so, so easy.  I add chia seeds + vanilla extract to the base (making it 7 ingredients, I guess…).  Honestly, I think I’m going to have to freeze the remainder of the batch or else they will be gone by tonight.

Behind the scenes:

Photography happened after naptime was over, of course.

Back to my blissful mommy alone time… His nap actually lasted much, much longer than I expected it to, so I ended up having time to both bake AND read, cementing this morning as the. most. awesome. Saturday. ever.

I am currently reading Gretchen Powell’s new young adult novel Terra, and although I want to dedicate an entire blog post to the book when I’m done, let me say that it is simply AWESOME so far.

Love dystopian novels? Me too!  Check out Six Novels About Dystopias.

Eventually, Henry woke up, and he was all smiles.  We decided to take the dogs for a walk.  This is how we walk both dogs in the winter.

Henry wears footed pajamas and a $5 consignment snow suit, and I belt my jacket around the both of us – it’s kind of ridiculous, but it works.

Baby, it’s cold outside!

What are you guys doing this lovely Saturday morning?  Recovering from the holidays?  Traveling?  Reading? Baking?  Any running going on?  My long run is tomorrow!

  • Brittnie (A Joy Renewed) December 29, 2012, 11:59 am

So true – I’m the exact same way. Once Clara is down for a nap I debate either racing around the house getting a million things done, sitting my butt on the couch and zone out, or take a nap myself. 🙂

  • Jade December 29, 2012, 12:05 pm

What carrier do you use again? My bub loves facing forward now and the Carriers we have are not cutting it anymore.

    • Caitlin December 29, 2012, 12:09 pm

I borrowed the bjorn from a friend and love it! I also h e te infantino GoGo rider. Bjorn is better!

  • Britt December 29, 2012, 12:12 pm

I want to check out a bjorn my boy prefers facing out but I’d more comfortable when he’s facing in… And Bjorne are some of the more affordable carriers IMO.. That’s a really great idea with belting the jacket over the baby ! We’re in Orlando so I’m sure you remember the winter weather in the AM and summery temps by Lunch 🙂

  • Tiffany December 29, 2012, 12:13 pm

    Hey Caitlin,

Henry is absolutely adorable 🙂 He always puts a smile on my face!

It is a rainy day where I am…I even heard thunder this morning. I ‘m planning to make soup for the family, do some reading for my legal writing class and get in a workout.

By the way, have you mentioned the winner for the chocolate giveaway?

    Have a great day!

    • Caitlin December 29, 2012, 4:34 pm

She was chosen and emailed! Sorry you didn’t win 🙁

  • Courtney December 29, 2012, 12:42 pm

Haha, I love the snow suit! So cute 😀

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin December 29, 2012, 12:42 pm

I love those no bake date squares! But every time I make them I manage to polish them off in a record amount of time. 😛

  • Lauren December 29, 2012, 12:54 pm

    LOVE those bars! Seriously good.

  • Sarah (The Simple Dietitian) December 29, 2012, 1:04 pm

I love your method of keeping everyone warm! Whatever works, right? 😀

  • Miranda @ Biting Life December 29, 2012, 1:10 pm

I recently ordered Terra, too. I’ve heard so many good things about it from other bloggers! I can’t wait to start reading it 🙂

  • Sara @ fitcupcaker December 29, 2012, 1:31 pm

Ill have to try that recipe! Today I went to the gym, now eating a paleo pumpkin walnut muffing, getting ready to go watch the UK game!

  • Vicki December 29, 2012, 2:14 pm

It’s super snowy up north so I already have half a bottle of wine under my belt, and am getting ready to start on my second batch of cookies! Plan on doing some reading later. Currently reading “Fit from Within”, by Victoria Moran, which was a Christmas gift 🙂

  • Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed December 29, 2012, 2:21 pm

He gets cuter every post! It’s snowing hard here, but I think we may still be headed out to another family Christmas celebration. Hopefully the roads don’t suck!

  • Cecilia December 29, 2012, 2:42 pm

Congrats on your Women’s Running mention! Thank you for the book suggestion! I loved the Hunger Games and just haven’t found anything I like since then 🙁

  • Kris @ tryingtotri December 29, 2012, 2:44 pm

If you like Dystopian novels, try America 2014 by Dawn Blair. Published in 2004, it was set only 10 years in the future, but the possibilities were frightening!

I loved The Handmaid’s Tale, and the Hunger Games books too.

Those date bars look yummy… must try them!

  • Stephanie December 29, 2012, 2:59 pm

OMG-yes! Why, why, why am I so obsessed with dystopian stories?!

  • Alli December 29, 2012, 3:31 pm

Amen to that! It’s especially nice when you can do everything you planned 🙂
Good luck with your long run! I’m training for my first full and did 15 miles this morning. I fin myself reading your training run posts to encourage me 🙂

  • Sarah December 29, 2012, 5:13 pm

Weather.com says that right now, Charlotte is 50 degrees and where I live near Buffalo, NY is 26 degrees, which isn’t all that cold to me. And we have almost a foot-and-a-half of new snow that has fallen over the past few days…I take my dogs out for walks on my property, and shovel, etc., and tonight we’re going out for a date night. I find kind of funny that you’re saying it’s so OMGCOLD, frankly.

    • Caitlin December 29, 2012, 7:24 pm

I’m from Miami 🙂 anything under 60 is freezing!!!

      • Alli December 30, 2012, 1:42 am

From phx here. Totally agree!!! ^^^^^

  • Molly @ RDexposed December 29, 2012, 5:18 pm

7 miles in 25* running! Enjoy your long run.

  • Janie Kaiser December 29, 2012, 5:44 pm

I think my plans just changed, and I will be making these this evening….

  • Jeanelle @ Glocal Girl December 29, 2012, 5:52 pm

I just started a Dystopian novel which got glowing reviews but it is so complex I am having a hard time visualizing the plot and characters. Could be because I am still in holiday mode though and just looking for an easy read.

It’s called The Windup Girl, maybe you’d really like it!!

  • Elisabeth December 29, 2012, 6:32 pm

Thanks for the book idea! I read Gretchen’s blog sometimes, but haven’t recently – I had no idea she’d published a book. I loved The Hunger Games series & some other dystopian novels, so I’m looking forward to reading his one (FYI – to anyone who’d like to read on Nook or Kindle – it’s only $4.99 right now 🙂 ).

  • Angela December 29, 2012, 6:55 pm

Lovely pics! So glad the squares turned out for you and that you had a nice morning to relax. 🙂

  • Sam @ Better With Sprinkles December 29, 2012, 6:59 pm

I ran errands all morning and then went to a baby shower for my cousin…I’m definitely looking forward to having a relaxing day tomorrow!

  • Natalie @ Free Range Human December 29, 2012, 7:41 pm

Just got home from a week away. Let recovering commence!

  • Gretchen December 29, 2012, 8:11 pm

I am just so THRILLED that you are liking the book so far, Caitlin! (And honored that you spent some of your precious mommy alone time reading it!) That picture of Henry under the table, btw… I die of the cute.

  • Katie @ Talk Less, Say More December 29, 2012, 8:32 pm

Look at that smiley little baby!! 🙂

  • Deanna December 30, 2012, 8:06 am

    Is Gretchen’s book self-published?

  • nicki December 30, 2012, 8:39 am

Just downloaded terra and I’m loving it so far. A book you may love is Blood Red Road by Moira Young, excellent YA dystopian book. Thanks for the book review

  • Amber K December 31, 2012, 11:06 pm

Ooh, I love those bars! I made them for a potluck once and they were gone in seconds.
