Five People

in All Posts

Happy Friday!  Bring on the weekend.

I recently read an article about Jim Rohn, a motivational speaker who urges people to think carefully about who they spend their time with.

‘You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.’ Jim Rohn

It makes sense – people either drag you down or lift you up.  This got me thinking about the five people that I spend the most time with physically.  I spend most of my time with Henry, Kristien, my dad, my brother-in-law Nick, and Nicole.  If you count phone and e-mail interaction, I spend a lot of time with my BFFs Sarah and Lauren and my mom, too.  I guess this is one of the reasons that I like blogs so much – you can ‘surround’ yourself with good people via the Internet.

If you count furbabies, I spend more time with Maggie and James than my own husband.  Maggie is definitely dragging me down in terms of general intelligence but lifting me up in regards to overall awesomeness. Winking smile

Life lesson from dear old Maggie:  Confidence is key.  If you ever feel out of place, simply act like you’re supposed to be there and others will automatically accept you.  Sit in that chair like it was made for your bottom.

Hahahaha, Maggie absolutely cracks me up! Poor thing lives such a tough life 😉

  • Kristin August 24, 2012, 9:40 am

I feel obligated to admit that I have never had a dog and don’t really like pets in general, but your pictures of Maggie are adorable and today’s “life lesson” from Maggie made me laugh out loud. It’s so true! I also agree about spending time with good people. For me, it’s my boyfriend, parents, and sisters. That puts me right at 5!

  • Whitney August 24, 2012, 9:46 am

Who do I spend most of my time with or who do I WANT to spend most of my time with? I have an office job so my co-workers probably win that award (boo), but I’ll pretend that work doesn’t count and say that my husband, sister, mom, dad & pets are my five! 🙂

umm, love that Maggie just takes over Henry’s things. So presh! 🙂

    • Beth August 24, 2012, 10:44 am

I think my coworkers shouldn’t count. My friends do, especially the ones I talk with CONSTANTLY on GroupMe.

  • Katie @ Peace Love & Oats August 24, 2012, 9:51 am

I surround myself with my family and a LOT of bloggers, and a couple old good friends. Bloggers really are awesome 🙂

  • Dori August 24, 2012, 9:52 am

Maggie is hilarious in that chair!!!! Such a funny pup.

  • Shephalli August 24, 2012, 9:55 am

I love the pic! So cute 🙂

  • Colleen August 24, 2012, 9:56 am

I am not counting co-workers because they ate so negative that I tend to keep to myself. So my top 5 are: hubby, oldest son, youngest son, daughter, me, and my dog and cat.

  • Kendra @ My Full-Thyme Life August 24, 2012, 10:13 am

I see most people aren’t including co-workers. I agree! It’s too depressing when you think of how much time you actually spend with them instead of your loved ones. :-/ My preferred list is hubby, my sweet baby boy, my fur babies, my parents (counting them as one), and my mother-in-law.

Oh, Maggie! That chair WAS made for you! 😉

  • Claire @ Live and Love to Eat August 24, 2012, 10:22 am

Maggie’s life lesson might be the best thing I’ve read all week. 🙂

  • Lisa August 24, 2012, 10:24 am

That doggie is just too funny.

  • Rebecca @ Blueberry Smiles August 24, 2012, 10:26 am

Interesting to think about and it makes so much sense. I spend the most time with my boyfriend, sister, parents, best friend and my co-workers (just during worktime, but i feel like im there soooo much). I guess bloggers too if you count the amount of time I’m reading blogs!

I do get really affected by the people I’m with…a few years ago I had awful roommates and it dragged me down so much. When I finally left that situation (I stayed much longer than I should have because my rent was so low), I felt so much better and it was an automatic lift of happiness and confidence.

  • Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction August 24, 2012, 10:31 am

I spend a lot of time with my family and my dog! Love them to death 🙂

  • Ashley August 24, 2012, 10:32 am

I spend the most time with my boyfriend and middle sister, who both happen to be my roommates. My little sister just moved into the same apartment complex that we live in, and she’s only 2 buildings away, so I spent a bunch of time with her. We each have a dog, so there’s 3 dogs. It’s a happy little group:)

It is interesting to think about- and I agree- I love blogs because you can surround yourself with such good and positive people! 🙂

  • Michelle @ Eat Move Balance August 24, 2012, 10:32 am

Great quote! I really like that–makes you think twice about who you choose to surround yourself with. I’m glad that those “5” are people that make me happy, are supportive and motivate me to be my best.

  • Alex @ Healthy Life Happy Wife August 24, 2012, 10:32 am

It is so true that you are affected by who you are with! My husband definitely makes me calmer, my friends make me more outgoing & my puppy helps me to not take myself too seriously. & yea, the puppy needs to be included! I’m with her more than anyone else!!

  • Cara August 24, 2012, 10:34 am

such an adorable photo!! I am 6 months preg- and have a pomeranian- I can totally picture this scene in our house in a few months! lol

  • Samantha Angela August 24, 2012, 10:34 am

Aww, I love Maggie’s confidence. She’s such a cute dog.

  • Kattrina August 24, 2012, 10:37 am

That is such a great quote! I spend the most time with my hubs, my bus friend (we commute 1.5 hours each way to work – although she just got a new job close to home so her last day on the bus was yesterday – boo), my co-worker, my BFF from college, and my sister. They are all great people. I wish I could spend more time with my hubs. My baby boy is due in two weeks so I guess I am replacing my bus friend with my baby (which is a great swap!) and since I have three months of maternity leave I won’t be commuting and I won’t be at work. However, when I return to work I’ll wish I could spend more time with my hubs AND my baby. Such is life!

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat August 24, 2012, 10:39 am

Oh my goodness, SO true! I remember reading this elsewhere and really thinking about it. I am lucky that I spend most of my time with some very positive people, and I think this definitely affects my mood and mannerisms. On days when I feel less than great, often I can link it to being in environments or around people that are negative or emotionally taxing. Have a great Friday Caitlin!

  • Annette@FitnessPerks August 24, 2012, 10:42 am

This is SO true!! I surround myself with awesome people–and I feel that! 😉

  • Katie @ Talk Less, Say More August 24, 2012, 10:44 am

I spend most of my time with my roommate. She’s one of my best friends and my coworker. It is no wonder we are so similar…

  • Christine @ BookishlyB August 24, 2012, 10:55 am

I spend the most time with my husband and a few close friends, but since I’m a high school teacher I do spend 7 hours a day with teenagers. I think, most days, this is actually a good thing- it helps me keep a sense of humor, optimism and adventure. I do think their tendencies to procrastinate have been a little contagious, though,

  • Laura August 24, 2012, 11:01 am

Great post!!! I was laughing out loud yet still soaking in the good advice. Thanks 🙂

  • Jen@HealthyFoodandFamily August 24, 2012, 11:10 am

    Hahaha, maggie is awesome!!
I spend more time with my 4 year old than anyone else in the family 🙂

  • ash August 24, 2012, 11:19 am

Love maggie! I also have a daschund, their mannerisms crack me up!

    • Caitlin August 24, 2012, 12:03 pm

      they are funny pups

  • Tara August 24, 2012, 11:25 am

Maggie’s pic is awesome! Totally made me laugh!

I spend the most time with my husband, son and our furbaby, Rufus the BT (officially our oldest child, but acts like the youngest! ;)). Our extended families live out-of-state, but we’re fortunate to have some awesome friends we try to hang-out with as much as possible too. However, at the end of the day it’s usually just us and I’m okay with that. We all love each other like crazy and think each other are pretty cool peeps (and dog) to hang out with!

  • Hillary August 24, 2012, 11:33 am

I think that’s a really interesting point. A few years ago, I realized how much other people’s negativity (or positivity!) affects me. I’ve tried very hard since then to surround myself with positive people—it’s not always possible, but it makes a huge difference in pretty much every area of my life when I do!

  • Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed August 24, 2012, 11:35 am

I don’t think I have a 5… I have so many friends and things I’m involved with! I guess if I had to pick I’d say my boyfriend, my bff at work, my mom, my cheerleaders and fellow coaches (a lot more than 5!), and my pup! I have so many friends that I see once a week, once every other week, once a month, etc… that I think I’m a reflection of all of them. It’s nice to have such a large pool of positivity surrounding me!

  • Alexandra August 24, 2012, 11:45 am

Love the quote and Maggie! She makes me want to have a dachshund. For real.

  • Beks August 24, 2012, 11:48 am

I hang mostly with my parents, since I live with them, and since my friends are mostly spead all over the country, I spend the rest of my time with my fur babies and coworkers.

Also, Maggie, much like her life lesson, is awesome. 🙂

  • Natasha August 24, 2012, 12:11 pm

I definitely spend the most time with my furkids (3dogs, 3 cats) being that I work from home with them here! Aside from that my hubby, mom, my SIL, and my MIL, FIL. Lucky for me they are all pretty positive great people!

Love the shots of Maggie in Henry’s seat. ADORABLE!

  • brooke @ sweats & sweets August 24, 2012, 12:27 pm

The Maggie pictures crack me up every time! I spend most of my time with my husband and thats it. I’m not working a lot so I haven’t seen a coworker in 2 1/2 weeks. I’m either alone all day or with my husband at night. I need a fur baby ASAP.

  • Laura August 24, 2012, 12:37 pm

I am so obsessed with all Maggie photo; she needs to make daily appearances on your blog. 🙂 I love seeing her in Henry’s seat. She looks so comfortable! Also loved seeing her share that pillow thing with Henry the other day.

  • Sophie@ Threetimesf August 24, 2012, 12:41 pm

    I like that theory 🙂

  • Sam August 24, 2012, 1:09 pm

I definitely spend more time with my co-workers than my friends and family, but I work with a pretty great bunch of people, so I’m ok with that :). I get as much love and support from some of them than I do my out-of-work friends.

  • Sam @ Better With Sprinkles August 24, 2012, 1:31 pm

I’m not going to lie, seeing Maggie’s cuteness kind of makes me hope my future puppy is a little bit on the dumb side. It’s just so freakin’ cute.

  • Corrie Anne August 24, 2012, 2:14 pm

I LOVE MAGGIE’S LIFE LESSON!! That’s hilarious. And actually true!!! One of our dogs is a little lower on the intelligence scale as well, but he’s hilarious. And my dog Pippa is gentle beauty. Haha. I spend the most time with my husband… and after that? gym people? i don’t know. I’m not working right now and don’t know a lot of people in the area.

  • Amber K August 24, 2012, 2:17 pm

I spend the majority of my time with my husband, best friend and her four kids. Those are just the people I see the most often! I averaged their ages and that makes me 13 years old 😉

  • Allison August 24, 2012, 3:35 pm

I love Maggie and your sense of humor. Thanks for the much needed laugh today. xoxo

    • Caitlin August 24, 2012, 10:05 pm

Also, whenever you talk about Maggie it makes me laugh out loud. Thanks for that! 🙂

  • Jennifer August 24, 2012, 10:57 pm

Those five people HORRIFY me. I really need to quit my job! (I’m a fan of my boyfriend and mom and sister, though).
