Will walk/run for Starbucks!

IMG_0404

Nicole and I spent the afternoon together because she had the day off.  Henry and I drove to her place, and we did Day 2 of the Couch to 5K plan along our old running route (Rerun #1).  It was… challenging, considering there were so many hills, and I was jogging while pushing along the stroller (I use the term ‘jogging’ extremely loosely).  I bought Nicole a coffee for pacing us.  Winking smile

Lunch at her place while she bonded with the little man.

I got a spinach salad with goat cheese, honey mustard dressing, onion, carrots, golden raisins, sunflower seeds, and sprouts.  Killer combo!

I had plans to run errands but I got sucked into reruns of Dawson’s Creek on Netflix (Rerun #2).  A nursing newborn is an excellent excuse to plow through an entire series.

You’re welcome.

I eventually realized that if the Husband came home and I was still in sweaty running clothes, with no dinner to offer up, and watching Episode 2 of Dawson’s Creek, I would be slightly embarrassed…

So I pulled myself off the couch and made this:

Stir-fried veggies (cooked a ton yesterday so all I had to do was microwave!) and a cheese and lentil (also pre-cooked, but from Trader Joe’s) sammie.

It’s almost FRIDAY!

You might want to check with your doctor on what age you can safely run/jog with a baby in a stroller. I’m not a mom so I can’t say with total authority, but I am pretty sure they recommend waiting until your baby is 6 months old.

    • Caitlin July 12, 2012, 8:51 pm

Really? Do you know why? This was seriously closer to a fast walk so I’m not too worried. But I guess I should keep it at that pace and not go faster?

      • Erin July 12, 2012, 9:12 pm

I believe that she had sim in the carseat attached to the stroller, which is fine, especially if you are on relatively smooth pavement. You have to wait until 6 months to put them directly into the stroller, as they don’t have the head/torso control to absorb the shock of the bumps. 🙂

        • Caitlin July 12, 2012, 9:19 pm

Oh good to know! Yeah, with those newborn snuggler things in the carseat, he doesn’t really move! I jogged on the side of the road instead of sidewalk cause that was too bumpy. Henry has awesome head control too! I need to make a video. He could support his head week one. <== proud momma

          • Erin July 12, 2012, 10:24 pm

Just noticed my typo…meant “him”! 🙂 Aw, go Henry! Yay for good head control! And yay for you for getting out and jogging with him!

  • Liz @ Tip Top Shape July 12, 2012, 8:49 pm

Did you know the ugly cry was unscripted?? James Van Der Beek just went with the scene and was overcome with emotion. In my opinion, that makes it about 100 times better! lol

    • Caitlin July 12, 2012, 8:56 pm

      Soooooo epic.

    • Amber K July 13, 2012, 2:40 pm

      LOL That’s awesome.

  • Erin Margaret July 12, 2012, 8:50 pm

Congrats on completing day 2 of the program! 🙂

  • Jen July 12, 2012, 8:53 pm

I want Nicole’s couch…I heart the pattern on the fabric!

    • Claire July 13, 2012, 2:27 am

It’s almost Friday is right! I am in need of a weekend and a vacation would be even better…I want the beach!

  • Sam @ Better With Sprinkles July 12, 2012, 9:08 pm

I could never get into Dawson’s Creek when I was younger…after seeing that crying face I just don’t know what to think, haha.

  • Liz O July 12, 2012, 9:14 pm

On the topic of running with baby, I’d just ask your doctor. Mine said 4/5 months because of their weak neck muscles….and we had the Bob Revolution with infant seat attachment. It’s fun to be active with your baby! Congrats on Henry and day 2 of your run/walk!!

  • Kara July 12, 2012, 9:27 pm

You pretty much want to avoid running with a newborn, especially in a non-jogging stroller, even if they are in their car seat. They stroller you’ve shown in pictures doesn’t have the shock absorption of the higher end jogging strollers and even in the car seat, most pediatricians don’t recommend running with such young babies.

Don’t take my word for it, call Henry’s doctor. Maybe he/she will make a liar of me and say OK, but I know mine sure wouldn’t.

I started running with my kid when she was 3 months, but she was huge (95% percentiles) and had strong head control. I only did that based on my doctor’s OK. It’s just not worth it to go earlier than they say.

    • Caitlin July 12, 2012, 9:41 pm

This is so good to know! I will call them tomorrow and see what they recommend. Thanks!

  • Amanda July 12, 2012, 9:33 pm

Pretty embarrassed to admit I just started watching Dawson’s Creek again the other day, I’m on like episode 5 and I don’t think I can handle just how awful it is. What was my 7th grade self thinking? I switched back over to Buffy.

  • allison July 12, 2012, 9:36 pm

holy crap that Dawson’s Creek clip is deluxe!! I could watch it a million times!

  • Katie @ Peace Love and Oats July 12, 2012, 9:41 pm

I vote when you’re nursing a newborn you can watch whatever you want and not feel embarrassed! Your prerogative!

    • Liz23 July 12, 2012, 10:04 pm

Yes I agree! No embarrassment! That’s pretty much what I did the first 2-3 months–watch tv or get on the computer while nursing away! I don’t think I had dinner ready for a while!

  • luv what you do July 12, 2012, 10:08 pm

I want to make the Will Run for Starbucks Tshirt. Do you know where to buy them? Looks like a fantastic day!

  • Ali July 12, 2012, 10:10 pm

You can’t run with that stroller, let alone with a newborn in the stroller.

    See here http://www.babyjogger.com/city_mini_sngl_dtl.aspx

    “Stroller not intended for jogging”

    • K July 12, 2012, 10:22 pm

I was just about to comment the same thing. Although made by “baby jogger,” the city mini is not meant for jogging or running.

  • Lee July 12, 2012, 10:17 pm

Have you seen Six Feet Under? I recommend that for your next Netflix series rental if you haven’t.

  • Leah July 12, 2012, 10:32 pm

Good job on day 2 of your couch to 5K! I am curious to know about what your doc says in regards to running with a newborn, I am hoping to be able to run with my lil one when he/she is born (at an indoor track), I had thought it was fine in the proper stroller.

    • Caitlin July 12, 2012, 10:35 pm

Thanks 🙂 Now I’m really curious too because there’s a lot of different feedback online. A lot of it depends on the surface type, speed, etc. I think a jog the way that I am currently jogging – it is seriously essentially fast walking – is probably okay for older babies certain on certain surfaces, like an indoor track. The concern is with bumpin their little noggins around when you’re on sidewalks and stuff (which I wasn’t on today anyway, I’m not totally clueless! LOL). I’ll let you know what they say when I call them, but I have a feeling there is a range of ideas of what is acceptable. For true running, it definitely seems like the baby should be older.

      • Jessica July 13, 2012, 8:32 am

Yeah, I asked my doctor since I’m a runner as well, and she said absolutely no running of any kind with the baby until at least 4 months old! She said it was because of the weakness of their neck (not bumping their head); you can do some bad damage. Most jogging strollers say not until 8 months.

        • Jessica July 13, 2012, 8:33 am

I forgot to add: 4 months for a slow easy run, 6-8 months for regular running pace.

  • Molly @RDexposed July 12, 2012, 10:42 pm

I forced myself through the first few seasons. I just wanted the Joey and pacey episodes. I kept waiting for the original song for the intro but it never comes. Why??
And have you noticed how many Katie Holmes touches her face/head?

  • Kate July 12, 2012, 11:31 pm

Shower or clean off and get out of your sports bra right after you workout. Finally after my third round of mastitis, I figured it out. Sweaty wet nursing breasts can equal disaster. Exact same thing was happening to my running friend who was also nursing.

    • Caitlin July 13, 2012, 10:02 am

EWWWWWWWWW! Thanks for the heads up

  • Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed July 13, 2012, 7:47 am

I wasn’t allowed to watch Dawson’s Creek when it was in it’s prime… apparently it was too racy hehe.

Congrats on day 2, you rock 😀

  • Laura July 13, 2012, 8:22 am

My manager at work said their pediatrician wouldn’t let him run with their baby in the stroller until they were about 4 months old…something with their head and neck. The pediatrician held their kids up and kind of shook them a tiny bit to see what their heads did and until they supported themselves or something he didn’t have clearance to run with them. Not knocking what you’re doing though…did your doctor advise you differently and say you could run right away? Just curious

  • Liza July 13, 2012, 9:17 am

The picture of Dawson crying reminded me that I saw this hilarious “90s problems” story online the other day. There are like 15 different ones… It’ll make you crack up!!

  • Kinley @ Better Off Barefoot July 13, 2012, 9:17 am

Oh, Dawson! My sister and I are working through the series on Netflix and we call that freeze frame you have his “Ugly Cry.” We still can’t figure out how he had any friends. The dude was a total GEEK! His clothes + his tendency for making everything extremely dramatic would have made him such a pain to be around in real life 😉 Happy Friday!

  • Sally July 13, 2012, 9:31 am

My friends and I who read your blog love Nicole… and her blog too!

    • Caitlin July 13, 2012, 10:01 am

      She is awesome!

  • Kailey July 13, 2012, 9:37 am

I am SO excited that Dawson’s Creek is now on Netflix = I’ve never seen the show but I don’t have to worry about finding all the seasons on DVD 😀

  • Jessica July 13, 2012, 5:27 pm

Re: the running stroller, my per said 5 months…i think it is for the same reason you aren’t supposed to shake a baby…dunno. Either way, great job w c25k! you go girl! I love that brand of swaddles. they have done the best job for me and are the most user friendly! I STILL swaddle my baby for naps even (he is 3 months)- it is like his cue to sleep too as well as the security it provides them. He also loves napping in the fisher price rock and play- i would DEFinitely rec this- it is GREAT, cheap, portable, and babies LOVE the cocoon/security it provides 😉 if henry responds well to the swaddle i feel he would like this for napping even some night time sleep as well… just a thought.

  • Megan July 16, 2012, 1:38 pm

Omg! I just spent the weekend watching Dawson’s Creek on Netflix ! And I watched that episode and all I could think of was how hideous Dawson’s crying face is. I’m team Pacey all the way. LOL

  • Lexi @ You, Me, & A World to See July 18, 2012, 2:26 pm

Cheese + lentils sound like a match made in heaven!
