Coaching Win and DVR Fail

in All Posts

My first day back as a Girls on the Run head coach went well!  This year, the Husband is coaching with me on Thursdays only.  He wanted to coach more often but, thankfully, the clinic is really picking up and it’s just not feasible anymore.  Coach Jen will join us on Tuesdays, and Coach Kim will be with me Tuesday and Thursday.

This is GREAT because it’s so helpful to have ‘extra’ coaches (you must have at least two at all times), especially because I’ll be traveling a lot for work in the next two months.  And trust me, when you’re trying to wrangle 15 elementary schoolers, extra people are extraordinarily helpful.

Plus, I’m excited to see Jen on a regular basis… until she pops, of course.

We have four repeat girls from last season – Wahoo!  I know their names, faces, and attitudes, and they know what to expect from me.  Now I only have to learn 11 new names, faces, and attitudes, and we’ll be all set.

The other big deal of last night was this:

IMG_1240

HOW TO CHOOSE?!  Seriously.  We stared at the television, cofounded.

(After much thought, here is our game plan for our DVD fail:  Watch X-Factor live from 8 – 9 PM, watch The Office live, and watch Grey’s Anatomy live and record the second half of X-Factor.)

I’m feeling a little sore today from my harder workouts earlier in the week, but I’m going to try to stick to my plan and finish 5 miles late.  Then, I have two days off and two races this weekend!  Excitement.

Breakfast of champions (the Husband once again requested steamed greens… He loves ‘em):

Eggs, toast, and a big pile of steamy goodness.

Ready, set, WORK.

I know the feeling of the DVR fail! (How did we ever live without ’em, eh?). It helps to try searching for “all showings” of any particular show… to see if it will be airing again later in the week. Sometimes even the big networks re-run a brand-new show on a Friday evening or weekend night when they don’t have anything else to run. The only thing out of your conflicting lineup I’m DVR-ing is The Office though… I haven’t watched Grey’s in years!

As much as I love working out, I am SO excited for a day off tomo :)…happy 5-milin’!

  • Peter September 21, 2011, 10:33 am

Why don’t you get a 4 tuner box? Or rent a second one? Or use the DVR capability in your computer? Or at least contact your ex-CTO?

    xoxo

    • CaitlinHTP September 21, 2011, 10:39 am

      WHATTTTTTT. Dad, you confound me.

    • Dynamics September 21, 2011, 1:58 pm

I think this deserves more info! How the heck do you do that?

      • Peter September 21, 2011, 2:38 pm

There are cable boxes with 4 tuners built in instead of two so you can record 4 different shows at once; or rent a second box from your cable company; Windows Vista and 7 (in most versions, I believe)have dvr capability built in; (your computer may or may not need a tuner card) and Kristien replaced me as Chief Technology Officer.

        • Dynamics September 21, 2011, 4:07 pm

Oh, sorry you lost your title, but you still have the most important one of HTP Dad!!! I do not have cable, but I will definitely check out my laptop. Thanks.

        • Peter September 21, 2011, 4:21 pm

Without cable, I use a Tivo, which is only 2 tuners; a lot of people don’t realize they can get free over the air (non-cable) network stations in HD with an $80 antenna. Unless you watch a lot of SyFy, TNT, USA (guilty on all) or reality tv (cough, when I’m dead)it’s the way to go.
Laptops are tough – if it didn’t come with a tuner, it may not be possible to add. OTOH, I watch a lot of “TV” on my computer, so it’s easy to connect that to a larger screen.
Ask Caitlin – I could go on forever.

          ysa (oh,guilty

  • Jessie September 21, 2011, 10:43 am

I plan on watching Grey’s Anatomy on ABC.com thanks to their online full episodes.

  • Diana @ frontyardfoodie September 21, 2011, 10:45 am

Oh my goodness that pregnant gorgeousness is giving me baby fever.

  • Sweet and Savvy September 21, 2011, 10:45 am

Congrats on a good time with GOTR! 🙂 Your eggs look perfect! How do you get them To Have that white And yellow marbled look?

  • Wes September 21, 2011, 10:46 am

I really need to get DVR – the wife keeps bugging me about it but…hard to spend the extra money for us at least.

  • Ashley O. @ The Vegetable Life September 21, 2011, 10:47 am

I would DIE if Grey’s did not record on my DVR. I think my life would end. Seriously (Yes, I am that pathetic hahaha)

  • Sana September 21, 2011, 10:50 am

Don’t forget you can watch shows online!!!

  • Angela September 21, 2011, 10:56 am

Do you have time shift channels in the US? A lot of the bigger UK networks have a second channel that is an hour behind the main version. They usually fix my conflicts. For desperate times there is usually a random 4am repeat if you look hard enough!

    • Caitlin September 22, 2011, 9:04 am

      Noooooooooooooo! i wish we did.

  • Verna September 21, 2011, 11:04 am

Is Jen’s belly not the cutest thing ever? Aww!

  • Gina @ Running to the Kitchen September 21, 2011, 11:06 am

I’m so happy we don’t have cable anymore so I don’t have to make those choices! After the initial shock of it all, it’s kind of freeing 🙂

    • Dynamics September 21, 2011, 2:00 pm

I canceled my cable and have discovered HULU for a lot of the shows. Also, you can go to the TV station website and still see some of the episodes within a day to a week of original air date on your laptop/computer. Clicker is a new optional I have been told is very safe also.

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat September 21, 2011, 11:06 am

I love Jen’s shirt! Can’t wait to hear more about this season’s GOTR events. 🙂

  • Angela (Oh She Glows) September 21, 2011, 11:08 am

We’re facing the same tv dilemmas. We’ve been planning out what we’re going to watch each night. I think I have a couple shows each night to keep me entertained. I don’t care what people say about TV, a little bit each night is fun. 🙂
    I’m also watching X-factor tonight…hope it’s not a let down!

  • Taylor @ Crumbs Don't Count September 21, 2011, 11:16 am

I know how you feel with all these new shows! Last night Dancing with the Stars and Glee came on at the same time and I don’t have a DVR! I had to choose which one I wanted…I opted for Glee. I really need to invest in a DVR since most shows come on too late for me (like the new one that comes on after Glee called “New Girl” with the funny girl from Failure to Launch.

  • Sara @ OurDogBuffy September 21, 2011, 11:20 am

There are so many great shows in the fall lineup! We cancelled cable last year, so we’re trying to juggle activities at night with trying to catch our shows. We have Hulu as a backup (most shows are available on Hulu … but not all …) it’s been interesting. I can totally relate. It’s hard to keep up with what’s on and when!

    • Sara @ OurDogBuffy September 21, 2011, 11:21 am

cancelling cable = no DVR … just wanted to clarify! We used to live by our DVR. It was an adjustment. But saves so much $$ and we have an HD antenna and can pick up all the networks plus some local channels.

      • Dynamics September 21, 2011, 2:02 pm

Plus you get to watch all those old time sitcoms and classic movies.

        • Sara @ OurDogBuffy September 21, 2011, 2:21 pm

Yes! And we have Netflix and Hulu too 😉

        • Dynamics September 21, 2011, 4:05 pm

          Check out Clicker?

  • Carolina John September 21, 2011, 11:21 am

I don’t think Time Warner’s DVR will let you just record the second half of a show. That really is some of the most poorly designed software I have ever seen, and I earn a living by rebuilding poorly built software.

Besides, just watch Gray’s. The office jumped the shark years ago.

  • Joey September 21, 2011, 11:21 am

It makes me giggle when I read that your hubby yells his affection for steamed greens. 🙂

  • Casey @ Pocket Full of Sunshine September 21, 2011, 11:29 am

Yay for Girls on the Run. 🙂 Looking forward to reading about your season!

  • Holly @ The Runny Egg September 21, 2011, 11:31 am

We just got a DVR last week and I keep forgetting to record my shows! I didn’t know X Factor starts this week, I wanted to check that show out!

  • Kiran @ KiranTarun.com September 21, 2011, 11:35 am

It stinks to choose which show to record and otherwise. Technology is falling back. It needs to catch up with our growing demand for good tv shows 😉

  • Sara @ RunnerWife September 21, 2011, 11:46 am

I wish I had DVR! I havent been able to convince my husband yet that it is necessary to spend the extra $ each month. I think it pays for itself, but maybe I will eventually wear him down!

  • Ashley September 21, 2011, 11:48 am

I’m so impressed with your husbands love of steamed greens! I wish I could get my hubby to like them. It’s a work in progress. 🙂

  • Yolie @ Practising Wellness September 21, 2011, 11:54 am

Hehehe…the age old dliemma. Or rather the new come-woth-technology dilemma 😉 what. to. record.
my and my boyfriend share a house with two other guys, and they always have clashing recordings. I don’t record anything anymore, lol! I gave up a loooong time ago 😛
That breakfast looks so nice- and how awesome that the Husband loves steamed greens…proper rad. Smart man, lol! 😉 Have a great workday! xyx

  • Paige @ Running Around Normal September 21, 2011, 11:55 am

Yay for the GOTR excitement! Sounds like you’re going to be one busy woman though! Good thing that book is almost dunzo, right? 🙂

  • Moni'sMeals September 21, 2011, 11:59 am

Welcome back to GOTR, so exciting! (you can tell by the pics!)

  • deva @ deva by definition September 21, 2011, 11:59 am

I don’t watch a lot of the traditional prime-time TV shows, so our DVR is full of shows like Pawn Stars, and Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations. I do plan to set my DVR to record Grey’s, though, just in case!

  • Amy September 21, 2011, 12:05 pm

Tonight is my fourth night coaching GOTR (as an assistant) — LOVE IT and the girls. I’m having so much fun!!!

    • Caitlin September 22, 2011, 9:04 am

Thank you so much for volunteering with GOTR!

  • Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife September 21, 2011, 12:13 pm

I love that he loves steamed greens, that is SO cool!

My sister goes to GOTR and loves it! YAH 🙂

  • katie @ KatieDid September 21, 2011, 12:19 pm

haha TV dilemmas! We don’t have cable, and I’m sort of glad to not have to even consider which shows to watch when. My roommates and I usually will just pick a movie to watch when we have time and otherwise I stick to blog reading for my entertainment 🙂

  • Beth B. September 21, 2011, 12:33 pm

Can you add your “recipe” for steaming your greens in your Recipe section? I know it may be obvious for some people, but I’d like to know; i have a bunch of Kale in my fridge right now, from the Farmer’s Market and I’d love to cook it up!!

  • Evan Thomas September 21, 2011, 12:38 pm

The Office will be on Hulu, and Grey’s Anatomy will be on ABC.com, if any of that helps.

  • Jennifer September 21, 2011, 12:49 pm

They need an “unlimited choices” DVR. I know they can do it, I wonder if it’s more to do with storage space (I’m totally technically challenged). I’ve had to resort to hulu on occasion because of this same dilemma. Sigh, such problems we have! 😉

  • Amber K September 21, 2011, 12:56 pm

My husband and I have to rearrange our DVR every week! There are sooo many conflicts this season! Luckily we watch a lot of stuff on the upper channels which replay their shows a lot. So we just have to figure out what’s messed up (wed/thurs nights are PACKED) and fix it. It’s a giant pain, but so many new shows showed up and so many favorites came back!

I think we’ll leave our couch sometime in May… 😉

  • Maryea {Happy Healthy Mama} September 21, 2011, 1:11 pm

I would be so happy if my husband requested steamed greens ever. How nice. 🙂

  • Leanne (Bride to Mrs.) September 21, 2011, 1:29 pm

There’s too much great tv on. This weekend I’m going to sit down and sort out what shows that (although ill miss) I can live without. It gets to be too much… and just as your tv-diet showed, less tv = more productivity!

  • Nicole@ Singdancerunlive September 21, 2011, 1:39 pm

Do you have Uverse by you? You can record 4 shows at once! It’s my new favorite item for Fall! And its comparable in price to other cable companies. Plus, you can record in one room and watch in another. (Comcast never did that for me).

  • lindsAy September 21, 2011, 1:48 pm

how do you steam your greens? i think i would like to eat those but i would probably mess them up…

and it’s so hard to choose things to DVR sometimes! at least some of the stuff on cable re-airs a million times…but that doesn’t really help you. hope it works out! 😉

  • Hillary September 21, 2011, 2:00 pm

The people on the morning radio show that I listen to were discussing the exact same DVR conundrum this morning. Yup. I said conundrum.

  • Cat @Breakfast to Bed September 21, 2011, 2:19 pm

my dvr cut off GLEE last night. MY LIFE WAS RUINED FOR 3 MINUTES.

  • Ellie@fitforthesoul September 21, 2011, 2:22 pm

Wowww Jenn is looking great and healthy! And still very fit 😀 I love how there’s the two footprints right on her belly–such a cute shirt.

  • kathleen @ the daily crumb September 21, 2011, 2:27 pm

i feel like SUCH a loser, but have had to basically chart out my tv schedule to make sure everything gets watched or recorded. maybe that says something about my priorities…

  • Whitney September 21, 2011, 2:33 pm

Our DVR is in full swing right now! The best thing the husband and I did last week was getting dvr on both of the tvs!! 🙂

  • Amanda @ AmandaRunsNY September 21, 2011, 2:34 pm

i love the idea of steamed greens with breakfast. I’m going to try that next time I make breakfast!

  • Ari @ Ari's Menu September 21, 2011, 2:42 pm

I am so skeptical of The X Factor. I feel like Simon left American Idol to do the same thing and I don’t get it? But then the girl on the commercial singing was actually good and I never feel like the people on American Idol are very good (maybe I’m a snob? haha), so I decided to give it a shot. I am SO excited for Grey’s!!!

    • Caitlin September 22, 2011, 9:06 am

I liked it last night! It was good.

  • Hope @ With A Side Of Hope September 21, 2011, 2:46 pm

I couldn’t live without my dvr! I don’t know what would I do without it. I have been DVRing like crazy! It’s so hard because so many shows are on at the same time. I don’t know what to watch live and what to dvr. I’m going to try watching X-Factor tonight. I hope it’s good! 🙂

    • Jen September 21, 2011, 3:10 pm

I’m like that on Wednesday…The Middle, Survivor and America’s Next Top Model comes on.

Oh God – I’m pathetic. I need to quit TV.

  • Jen September 21, 2011, 3:00 pm

You are talking about Thursday night right? And not tonight? Which is wednesday…or is it? I’m SO bad for “flicking” between channels.. it actually gives me extreme anxiety. I should get a dvr.

  • Mary September 21, 2011, 3:08 pm

I just noticed your little side bar pictures on the right! I love ’em!!

So glad you’ve got extra coaches for GOTR, I feel like three is a good number to have all the time anyway… that way you can give all the girls the attention they need 🙂

    • Caitlin September 22, 2011, 9:06 am

      Thanks!!!

  • Jessica @ Jess Go Bananas September 21, 2011, 3:45 pm

  • Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats September 21, 2011, 4:43 pm

Yay! 🙂 I bet having some extra hands at GOTR is awesome!

  • Katie @ Peace Love and Oats September 21, 2011, 6:00 pm

  • Emily @ Perfection Isn't Happy September 21, 2011, 10:30 pm

Jen’s shirt is so cute..and she looks really good for being that far along (I’m guessing she’s pretty far along,at least). Does she still run??

    • Caitlin September 21, 2011, 10:34 pm

She’s running 12 miles or so a week STILL! 3rd trimester!

  • Lexi @ A Spoonful of Sunshine September 22, 2011, 3:56 pm

    Eggs + greens = perfections !

  • Amanda s. September 25, 2011, 9:11 am

Looks like you have Brighthouse. Just want to let you know that Brighthouse does have two channels (if I remember correctly) that helped us solved the DVR dilemma. They are called HD Showcase or Primetime On-demand. They are on demand channels that house most major networks’ TV shows. My boyfriend and I don’t DVR The Office or Survivor anymore. Helps us tons on freeing up DVR. Check them out and see which show that you normally watch are on there. One warning – sometimes a show won’t show up for 24 hours after it’s original airtime. But it’s still always there!! Let me know what you think.

  • Sophie @ threetimesf September 25, 2011, 11:42 am

I am so excited that it is The X Factor time of year, and I am even more excited that Gary Barlow is a judge on the UK series this year – Mmmmmm 😉
