Hey, Hey

in All Posts

I ran 7.0 MILES THIS MORNING!  My first long run of half marathon training, and the furthest I’ve run since my marathon back in October!

I pulled out all the stops to get myself motivated to run today.  I built the run up in my head for days, dressed appropriately (three layers on top, gloves, ear muffs, hat…), blasted my favorite music, and made sure I got it out of the way first thing this morning.

Does anyone else feel extremely bad-ass while running in a hoodie?

IMG_8186

The real cincher for me on this run was my favorite Eminem song, which I replayed approximately 30 times.  I played this song over and over again during the marathon and it totally pushed me through.

And yes, I literally felt like I was going to collapse at many times.  The roads are still icy and dangerous, I haven’t run in days, and 7.0 miles is an entire mile farther than I’ve ran recently.  Plus, I was running alone!  No buddies.  I’m so grown-up.  🙂

I wore my Garmin for the first time in a MONTH, so here are my splits:

  • Distance: 7.0
  • Duration: 1:13
  • Mile 1: 10:10
  • Mile 2: 10:14
  • Mile 3: 10:28
  • Mile 4: 10:24
  • Mile 5: 10:54
  • Mile 6: 10:37
  • Mile 7: 10:01

A little slower than I would’ve liked (jumping around ice patches and a few walking breaks), but I know it’s good to run your long runs at a slower pace (more time on your feet = greater endurance).  I am extremely pleased, I must say!

Pre-run breakfast featured something new.  Can you spot it?

IMG_8179

I mixed in WHEATBERRIES!   Yum.  Wheatberries are a super chewy grain that you can eat hot or cold.

IMG_8176

To make my breakfast bowl, I combined:

  • 1/4 cup (measured dry) cooked wheatberries
  • 1/4 cup raw oatmeal
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/2 cup almond milk

In a small saucepan and cooked it like I would normally prepare oatmeal.  Added some coconut and white chocolate chips on top!

IMG_8181

I love it – so chewy!

And lunch was made and consumed quickly:  A two-egg thick sandwich with an apple.  I’m actually eating this now as I wait in a tire shop to get new tires on our car.

Lunch #2 shall be eaten shortly.  🙂

What’s your power song for workouts?

  • Janene @ One Run at a Time January 13, 2011, 12:12 pm

You are such a B.A. in that pic.

    3 favorite power songs:

    1.) Firework, Katy Perry
    2.) One More, Superchick
3.) Dog Days Are Gone, Florence & The Machine (… or the Glee cast, just sayin)

    J

    • Ann @ Day by Day January 13, 2011, 12:49 pm

Dogs Day are Over is the best running song!! I totally agree with you on that – and all the other Glee songs too.

      • Janene @ One Run at a Time January 13, 2011, 1:48 pm

hehe, obviously i was singing it in my head, and my fingers couldn’t keep it straight.

glee pretty much has taken over my running playlists. who am i kidding, it’s taken over my music library completely! 😀

  • Ali @ Ali on the Run January 13, 2011, 12:13 pm

Awesome job! I can’t wait for the snow and ice to go away in NYC. My favorite pump-up songs are “Womanizer” by Britney, of course, and currently obsessed with “Coming Home” by Diddy.

  • jen @ taste life January 13, 2011, 12:14 pm

Congrats on the great run! I am not sure I have a power song.

  • Julie (A Case of the Runs) January 13, 2011, 12:14 pm

That song was playing on my run this morning, too! I LOVE Eminem for running! (BTW, he has a song called “Cinderella Man” that is very similar to “Til I Collapse).

I have LOTS of “powersongs” (I used to have a Nike+ kit, and this is what they called it), “No Love” & “Forgot About Dre” by Eminem, “Just Like Heaven” by The Cure (weird, I know), “Breathe” by Fabolous, and most Kanye West songs.

I think wheatberries need to be cooked for quite a while before softening “enough.” This is why I stopped eating them, although soaking them overnight will help them cook faster. They can also be frozen.

  • Katie (Sweet Tater) January 13, 2011, 12:14 pm

that’s my favorite superflow song too!

  • Kristy @ KristyRuns January 13, 2011, 12:15 pm

Great run! I’ll be hitting the [icy] pavement tonight! I have only listened to music a handful of times while running, but on that rare occasion when I do, Britney seems to do the trick. Also Better Than Ezra’s good. Wow. Polar opposites, but hey, whatever works. 🙂

    • Caitlin January 13, 2011, 9:43 pm

My musical taste is also polar opposite!

  • Liz @ Blog is the New Black January 13, 2011, 12:15 pm

Congrats on your long run, girl!

  • Amanda January 13, 2011, 12:16 pm

I’ve got a pretty sweet Lady Gaga Pandora station that I’ve been running with for the past few weeks. I just started eating wheatberries! I just got an amazing flour-less bread with wheatberries from Trader Joes. So good with peanut butter!

  • Karen January 13, 2011, 12:16 pm

One power song I can think of off the top of my head is “Never Comin’ Home” by Sting. Definitely boosts me during my walks/runs.

I have to figure out where to buy these wheat berries. Angela on OhSheGlows recently made a salad with them and now your oatmeal… Mmmmmm!! I love chewy grains:)

  • Madeleine @ Stepping to the Bright Side January 13, 2011, 12:16 pm

Get it giiiirl- love the hoodie, how Rocky Balboa of you! I run to Florence and the Machine’s “Dog Days are Over.” SO pumpin’

  • Michelle January 13, 2011, 12:17 pm

I ran in the snow on sat and felt so badass! 🙂 My power song is the Glee version of “Me Against the Music” and the live version of the Avett Brother’s “Colorshow.” Colorshow, in particular gets me going!

  • Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin January 13, 2011, 12:18 pm

You know I had wheatberries for breakfast today too for the first time in ages! So good.

I love SHAKE THAT w Nate Dogg featuring Eminem. Check it out!

  • Ashley January 13, 2011, 12:21 pm

My power song is actually the same one as yours lol I always switch to it when I cross finish lines in races and I feel like such a bad ass lol

  • Carolyn @ Lovin' Losing January 13, 2011, 12:22 pm

Great job on your run! I haven’t been able to motivate myself to run outside in the cold and wind, so I gave in yesterday and did an interval workout on the treamill. It made the time go by so much faster!

  • Natalia - a side of simple January 13, 2011, 12:23 pm

Annie Lennox– Walking on Broken Glass. No lie. It will get you pumped.

    Congratulations on the 7 miler!

    • Caitlin January 13, 2011, 9:44 pm

      That’s a good song!!

  • Hope January 13, 2011, 12:25 pm

Awesome run!! I’ve never had wheatberries before. They sound interesting. I think I’m going to have to pick some up!

  • Natalia@ The Health Script January 13, 2011, 12:26 pm

Stronger by Kanye, works every time!

  • Sabine @ thefruitpursuit January 13, 2011, 12:26 pm

    Yay for you Caitlin!

    Which Garmin do you use?

  • VeggieGirl January 13, 2011, 12:27 pm

My power song for workouts = “Electronic Music” by Sean Kingston

  • Kari @ Human, MD January 13, 2011, 12:30 pm

I don’t have a favorite song, but I do play a “one more song and I’ll look at my time”, or “one more song and I’ll finish my run” game… and every time I do that, “I would do anything for love” by Meatloaf comes on.

    1) I don’t really know why this song is on my iPod… but it is.

2). Is like 12 minutes long. Really, iPod? Really? 12 minutes is NOT what I had in mind when I said “one more song”.

  • gabriella @ embracement January 13, 2011, 12:31 pm

I ran 7 miles today too! On the treadmill it was tough but I didn’t stop to walk once so I was proud for running 1:13 minutes straight. Hard to think there’s a whole 10k after that for my half, but I can do it!

  • Juli D. January 13, 2011, 12:31 pm

Make Yourself by Incubus popped up on my long run last weekend and totally jazzed me up. The lyrics just fit a good, hard run.

“If I hadn’t made me, I would’ve been made somehow.
If I hadn’t assembled myself, I’d have fallen apart by now.
    . . .
You should make amends with you,
    If only for better health.
But if you really want to live,
Why not try, and make yourself?”

  • Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) January 13, 2011, 12:31 pm

Great job Caitlin! I am so glad you got out there! I don’t know that I could brave the cold at this point for even a walk!

  • Sarah @ See Sarah Graduate January 13, 2011, 12:32 pm

My power song at the moment is “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence + the Machine. Every time the chorus comes on, it pushes me to go past my limit and see what I’m really made of. 🙂

  • Kelly January 13, 2011, 12:32 pm

Awesome job! I love listening to Nelly’s new song and Secrets by One Republic

  • Corrie Anne January 13, 2011, 12:32 pm

I ran once while I was in Minnesota for Christmas break, and it was crazy different than running during decent weather. It’s better to be careful! Congratulations on getting out there, and I hope you enjoy your training. I change my music all the time. I’m a chronic song shuffler!!!

  • G January 13, 2011, 12:32 pm

Awesome run!!! So glad you decided to tackle the snowy roads!

  • Stephanie January 13, 2011, 12:33 pm

    “More” by Usher lately. 🙂

WTG on the 7 miler! I’m hoping to get a looong run (hah! for me anyways) this weekend!

  • chelsey @ clean eating chelsey January 13, 2011, 12:33 pm

    Great job on your run!

  • Lily's Health Pad January 13, 2011, 12:34 pm

I like the hard rock jams for inspiration. Static X-The Only and Placebo-Infared are two of my faves.

  • Sarah @ Long Legs Healthy Life January 13, 2011, 12:35 pm

    My power songs are:
    1. Around the World – Daft Punk
    2. Impossible – Kanye West (Mission Impossible 3 soundtrack)
    3. Get Back – Ludacris
    4. Have a little faith in me – John Hiatt

I have been known to sing along to these songs when I’m really pushing through

    • Kristen @ That Hoosier Girl January 13, 2011, 1:11 pm

When I want to get off the treadmill, I always play #4…and THEN call it a day 😉

  • Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday January 13, 2011, 12:36 pm

Wheatberries are awesome. I had some for morning snack. They were leftover from my whole grain wheat and barley bread.

  • Evan Thomas January 13, 2011, 12:36 pm

Great run, Caitlin! I managed to do 4 miles today, which is my long run for now.

I like P!nk’s Raise Your Glass for a good starter song. Today I listened to all of Breaking Benjamin’s Dear Agony CD, which I got last night and have played at least 5 times already.

  • Kristyn January 13, 2011, 12:37 pm

What a great question! So many! I’m into the 80s on my running playlists right now.haha. Brings me back. It’s good to be a child of the 80s, isn’t it? =) Go us.

Sweet Child Of Mine and The Warrior really push me through and give me power! I could name tons! I’m an iTunes addict. It’s bad.

Congrats on the run on your own! Rock on girl!

  • Amy* January 13, 2011, 12:38 pm

My power song is “Remember the name” by Fort Minor. I always listen to it when I feel like I want to quit and it keeps me going!*

  • Samantha @ Health, Happiness & Skinny Jeans January 13, 2011, 12:40 pm

My power song is Firework-Katy Perry. It really inspires me!!

    • Caitlin January 13, 2011, 9:45 pm

      I love that song too.

  • Stacy @ Every Little Thing January 13, 2011, 12:40 pm

Wow that bread is thick! The egg looks great though.

Any Britney can get me through a workout 🙂 Kanye does a good job too!

  • Lauri January 13, 2011, 12:42 pm

    Great run!!!

My power song for about the last year has been “I gotta Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas. It really keeps me going and it also makes me think of my 3 year old son, who loves it and knows every word so I smile thinking about him and then thinking about him motivates me more!

  • Michelle January 13, 2011, 12:42 pm

I also had a great 7-mile run this morning! It was the first time I’ve run to music ,and I have to say that the iPod is the greatest invention for running EVER. My power song this morning was “All We Know” by Paramore.

  • shelby January 13, 2011, 12:44 pm

I never run in hoodies…it drives me nuts to lose my peripheral vision. Esp if I have music on too. Way too easy for someone to sneak up from behind.

And I’m liking the new TI/Eminem song right now – That’s All She Wrote.

  • Jess@atasteofconfidence January 13, 2011, 12:45 pm

    Great job with the run!!
I love Heart of a Champion.

  • whitney January 13, 2011, 12:45 pm

Thanks so much for asking this question regarding the songs as I am always looking for new music. I tend to get tired of songs very easily. the song i am NOT tired of right now is “Firework” by Katy Perry. Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston always do the trick for me too.

  • Joanna B January 13, 2011, 12:46 pm

I think those are great times considering you haven’t had a long run in that long. The wheat berries look like barley to me, how do they taste in comparison?

Usually I run and workout without music. I lost my ipod a couple years ago and didn’t want to buy a new one, so I learned how to train without music. Now I can do either with or with out. But my favorite song to train to is
    “Feel Alive’ by Benassi Brothers.

It’s a dance music track (I used to be a big time club head) and it builds so it gets me pumped when I’m running.

    • Caitlin January 13, 2011, 9:45 pm

I don’t think I’ve ever had barley so I cannot tell you if it’s similar!

  • Katy (The Singing Runner) January 13, 2011, 12:46 pm

I love this song!!! I’ll be adding it to my training mix!!! Some of my favorite songs to run to are: Ravers in the UK ( I start EVERY run/race with this song!!!), Like a G6, and All I Do Is Win! 😀

    Great run! 😀

  • Tina January 13, 2011, 12:46 pm

My running playlist actually has a lot of Eminem songs, especially ones from his new albumn. Oddly enough the only time I listen to Eminem is when i’m running. My running playlist is such a random compilation of songs I have everything from System of a Down to Katy Perry. Whatever pumps me up!

  • Amy January 13, 2011, 12:47 pm

Caitlin, what kind of bread do you eat? I am considering buying a new bread machine to control the ingredients in my bread…..But I’m worried about a different kind of control. Controlling the amount of fresh bread that goes into my mouth! That being said, I live in such a rural area, I doubt I could find whatever kind of bread you eat.

    • Caitlin January 13, 2011, 9:46 pm

It’s the bakery bread… its a brand name called La Brea. I would love to own a bread maker!

  • Errign January 13, 2011, 12:47 pm

Not going to lie – I pretty much feel badass anytime I wear a hoodie with the hood up 🙂

My current fave running songs are Florence & the Machine’s Dog Days are Over & Ke$ha’s We R Who We R 🙂

    • Lisa January 13, 2011, 1:33 pm

Totally agree re: wearing a hoodie with the hood up! lol

      • Jazz January 13, 2011, 3:52 pm

You should try wearing a face mask ( I do since it’s -20) then I feel like a badass ninja!

  • Morgan @ Life After Bagels January 13, 2011, 12:50 pm

You kind of look like you’re going to beat me up!

My fave is Uprising by Muse

  • Freya January 13, 2011, 12:51 pm

Yaay congrats on the run! I did my first 10miler since my marathon a few weekends ago, and it was such a feeling of achievement 🙂
I’ve been running sans music since oct…my iPod broke! And I’ve never even heard of that Eminem song :p

  • Sarah (Sarah Learns) January 13, 2011, 12:52 pm

i ALWAYS run to a girl talk mix. i have 3 of them on my ipod, so i mix them up. plus, since the mixes are so long, two short runs = 1 mix, so i don’t recycle them THAT often.

  • Allison @ Happy Tales January 13, 2011, 12:55 pm

I’m about to head out on a longer-ish run… been pent up for days now! Glad to hear it’s not *too* bad out there… hoping to do at least 7, too! Hopefully the ice has melted by now?

One song that ALWAYS pumps me up is Kanye’s “Stronger” (the better, faster, strong one…from like 3 years ago). Get’s me every time!

  • JenRD January 13, 2011, 12:59 pm

That oat medley looks good! Trader Joe’s actually has this great multi-grain oatmeal–I forget what’s in it, but there are all sorts of fun grains. Makes it more interesting that ordinary oats!
Oh, and I can sympathize on the tree-bark teeth-breaking Kashi bars. I have switced to Gnu high fiber bars, which are delicoius, soft and chewy! Made with flax seeds, dried fruits and nuts (not oaty). http://www.gnufoods.com/ Between my hus and I, we joined the “Fiber of the Month” club for 30% discounts (we are so cool!).

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat January 13, 2011, 1:05 pm

Wooohoooo! Congrats Caitlin! I love wheatberries too.. if only they didn’t take so long to cook! Right now, my power-running songs are Firework by Katy Perry and Raise Your Glass by Pink, both are the Liam Keegan remixes. SO good!

  • Katherine: Unemployed January 13, 2011, 1:06 pm

I ran my farthest in a long time this morning too! (I had to do it on the dreadmill though)

  • Elizabeth@The Sweet Life January 13, 2011, 1:08 pm

Oh my goodness you look totally different in that hoodie and with that don’t-mess-with-me expression!

  • Kristen @ That Hoosier Girl January 13, 2011, 1:09 pm

Congrats on the run! I went to do an easy 3 miles and it turned out to be the hardest 3 miles I think I’ve done in 2 months! Not sure what wasn’t working today. Oh well…you’ll have days like that! I’m adding that song to my playlist…maybe it’ll help the last 5 minutes seem less painful next time 🙂

  • Carly (Swim, Run, Om) January 13, 2011, 1:14 pm

That’s funny you said that about hoodies … one of my Christmas gifts is this adorable pink, fluffy bathrobe which has a hoodie on it. I pop that hoodie up and walk around my apartment complex with Bowser. And yes, we are bad ass!!

  • F. Plvan January 13, 2011, 1:19 pm

This is what you need for those icy/snowy runs: http://www.skyrunner.com/screwshoe.htm. It really works! I live in Syracuse, NY, and we have snow/ice from November to April–and I run 4-5 days a week in all conditions.

      Brothers from a different mother!

  • Amanda January 13, 2011, 1:33 pm

I love this question! I’m always looking for new power songs to push me harder and I can’t wait to go search for a few of these people mentioned!
I’m a rock girl and my favourite running song is Down with the Sickness by Disturbed…it has a really great beat to run to!

Ps. Good job on the run! I ran 5 miles this morning and played it at least 5 times! Yay!

  • emily January 13, 2011, 1:40 pm

The best running song I’ve found (hands down) is “My Dick” by Dirt Nasty. It’s hilarious and the beat is perfect for getting me to crank up the pace.

  • ashleigh January 13, 2011, 1:49 pm

    Congrats on the 7 miles!

My favorite running song is How Far We’ve Come by Matchbox 20… it pushes me and always reminds me how far I’ve come 🙂

  • Jenna@frombostonwithlove.com January 13, 2011, 1:49 pm

Anything N’Sync or Backstreet Boys helps me kick it into high gear 😉 I’m not embarrassed to admit it!!

  • AllieNic @Frisky Lemon January 13, 2011, 1:54 pm

D.O.A by Jay-Z is pretty high on my workout playlist these days! I can totally visualize myself being awesome at working out when I hear it!

  • Cyndi @ Weightless Life January 13, 2011, 2:01 pm

My power song right now is Raise Your Glass by Pink, or Dog Days are Over by Florence and the Machine.

  • Kelly January 13, 2011, 2:02 pm

I really love anything fast by Paramore, especially their more recent album.

I don’t feel bad ass when I run in a hoody, I just feel like I have no peripheral vision. 😉

    • Caitlin January 13, 2011, 9:47 pm

      I love Paramoure too!

  • Cat January 13, 2011, 2:03 pm

Running slower also means less impact and force on your body, so in theory it can prevent injury.

  • Jenn @ LiveWellFitNow January 13, 2011, 2:05 pm

I am obsessed, still obsessed with One by Swedish House Mafia. Sich an awesome song!

  • Kara January 13, 2011, 2:07 pm

Linkin Park “Bleed it Out” can power me up any hill.

I can never run in a hoodie, it always falls off. It must be because I’m running so fast 🙂

  • Amanda @ JustAmandaJ January 13, 2011, 2:08 pm

You do totally look bad-ass 😛 When I did run, gonna get into it again after I pop out the kiddo, I loved catchy pop songs with a fast beat. My guilty pleasure is Lady Gaga currently though, I still love Bad Romance even if it is over a year old now!

    • Jennie January 13, 2011, 9:48 pm

I love that song too! 🙂

  • Kacy January 13, 2011, 2:18 pm

I salute you for running in icy weather. I am just too much of a wuss to do so.

  • Mindy Knows January 13, 2011, 2:19 pm

I’m so envious of your long run! I’ve been stuck in an office all day 🙁 My power-me-through songs include John Cougar Mellencamp’s “Hurt So Good” and Britney Spears’ “Sronger.” Check them out!

  • Kate (What Kate is Cooking) January 13, 2011, 2:20 pm

‘Jump that Rock’ by Scooter vs. Status Quo. I put it on all of my racing playlists!

  • Baking 'n' Books January 13, 2011, 2:21 pm

Congrats! That’s huge! I think that the white-choco-chips and coconut make for the perfect seasonal winter combo.

  • Salah (My Healthiest LIfestyle) January 13, 2011, 2:24 pm

YAY for the 7 miles!!! I don’t think I would go run in the icy weather lol

  • Meryl January 13, 2011, 2:26 pm

You should get “yaktracks” for snow and ice. They are rubber with metal coils that slip over the sole of your shoe. I trail run with those on snow and ice and they are great. Cheap too 🙂

  • Caitlin January 13, 2011, 2:32 pm

Till I collapse is also my favorite power song!!! I LOOOVE it, it’s great for lifting too! I also adore “heart of a champion” by nelly and “my time” by fabulous

    Congrats on your run!

    • Liza January 14, 2011, 12:48 pm

Heart of a Champion is my FAVE running song! I always play it when I begin and end my run. Love it.

  • Kristina @ life as kristina January 13, 2011, 2:36 pm

My power song is “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” by The Darkness.

These are great for running in ice/snow:

  • Erica January 13, 2011, 2:38 pm

7 miles must be a pretty popular distance today…that’s what I did, too! Except mine was on the treadmill, boo. I have been solely on the TM since mid-November because of hunting season and freezing temps, now snow. I’m just not a fan of the cold. I’m SO ready for some warm weather so I can hit the pavement again.

Ha – I had the same breakfast! Wish I could have had eggs… I still haven’t worked up the courage for a grocery store trip. 🙂

    Congrats on the run!

My power song: Spider Bait’s version of Black Betty.

  • emilyr January 13, 2011, 2:41 pm
  • Camille January 13, 2011, 2:41 pm

Your run sounds exactly like mine from last weekend. I also went 7 miles, the farthest I have gone since my marathon in October too, also due to an IT Band injury. Doesn’t it feel amazing!?

  • Charlie January 13, 2011, 2:43 pm

“Mercy” by Duffy is my #1 power song :).

  • Jamie @ Food in Real Life January 13, 2011, 2:46 pm

I really needed to read this! I’m planning to start my training (for a fake race) next week and that includes a 6 or 7 mile long run. It’s been so long and I’m a bit scared of the ice too. Thanks for the motivation to get my butt out there! I love Eminem to power through too. Lose Yourself is a good one!

    • Caitlin January 13, 2011, 9:48 pm

You can do it, just go slow!

  • carlee January 13, 2011, 2:49 pm

    Your a G!

  • Lana January 13, 2011, 2:51 pm

    Congrats on the 7-miler!!!

I want to try wheat berries so bad!! I looked in our store the other day and they didn’t have them 🙁 Guess that means a trip to whole foods!

I love running to the slum dog millionaire soundtrack. Most of the songs have an upbeat tempo and are super motivating! Check it out!

  • Mary @ Bites and Bliss January 13, 2011, 2:55 pm

Congrats on the run!!! And yeah, I totally feel bad ass when running in (or ever wearing) a hoodie!! haha

  • Beth @ DiningAndDishing January 13, 2011, 2:56 pm

I love Darude’s Sandstorm. And Til I Collapse is another favorite :).

    • Raya January 13, 2011, 3:07 pm

I have nightmares about Darude’s Sandstorm. It reminds me of freshmen year of college! 🙂

  • Amber K January 13, 2011, 3:05 pm

Taio Cruz – Dynamite, can’t get enough of it!

  • Raya January 13, 2011, 3:06 pm

Christina Aguilera’s “Fighter”, or T.I. “No Matter What” <—I listened to that T.I. song like 6 times during my half in October!

  • ashley January 13, 2011, 3:10 pm

haha…that song is total deja vu to college days when i used to POUND-IT-OUT around campus to that song….hitting left, left, left, right, left at the beginning with them….i was such a dumb ass badass…haha….i think i used to move to B.O.B. by outkast during that time too…yes!

  • Jennifer @ Frost Bites January 13, 2011, 3:21 pm

This is what I played over and over again during my first half-marathon last November.

At the moment, “We no speak Americano” by Yolanda B Cool – AMAZING!

Congrats on your run. I don’t think I have ever run 7 miles lol!

  • Jenna @ Eating Green, Staying Lean January 13, 2011, 3:29 pm

Congrats on the run! It must feel good to accomplish a 7 miler on your own…in the aftermath of the snow storm! And that egg sandwich is to die for…er, maybe I’m also just super hungry 🙂

  • Cindy Robinson January 13, 2011, 3:30 pm

Glad you got your groove back! All the while being bad ass in a hoodie 😉 Til I Collapse hits the spot everytime.

    • Cindy Robinson January 13, 2011, 4:16 pm

Justin Timberlake gets me going. Summer Love has a good beat!

  • Little Bookworm January 13, 2011, 3:31 pm

    Congrats on the run! 🙂

  • Katharine January 13, 2011, 3:32 pm

Raise your Glass–I play it over and over (and sing along)

  • Amanda January 13, 2011, 3:44 pm

You’re a gansta along with me. I sport the hooded sweatshirt with the hood over the baseball cap – underneath the ski jacket and scarf. It keeps me warm, dry, and endlessly amused… People don’t recognize me until I take off the layers.

  • Sarah @ The Strength of Faith January 13, 2011, 3:44 pm

My dad is a music teacher, so he has a CD with John Williams overtures on them, including all of his Olympic theme songs. I always thought the Olympic Fanfare and Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbHw8DBCXQ8) was a good one to keep me going.

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg January 13, 2011, 3:44 pm

You really can’t beat the Rocky song for power 🙂

    Great job on the run!!

  • Heather January 13, 2011, 3:47 pm

Lately it’s been Black and Yellow by Wiz Khalifa

  • Meesh January 13, 2011, 3:55 pm

I lover runaway baby by bruno mars. and anything by florence and the machine. I’m getting so many great song ideas from these comments! and congrats on your run!

  • Alayna @ Thyme Bombe January 13, 2011, 3:58 pm

Still haven’t tried wheatberries. I love running to Florence and the Machine and Katy Perry.

  • Emily January 13, 2011, 3:59 pm

great job finishing your long run, especially in the cold weather and icy conditions. i bet it is a rough transition from sunny FL!

  • foodandfarm January 13, 2011, 4:01 pm

“Run like hell” by pink floyd!

  • Sarah @ EatRunGarden January 13, 2011, 4:11 pm

Yaay on your 7 miles, running in the snow is really hard especially when people don’t shovel their sidewalks, make sure you are careful and look out for ice.

  • claire! January 13, 2011, 4:21 pm

OMG I listen to that song, too! But more recently, the Black Eyed Peas “The Time” song is a GREAT running song – the end part is especially motivating!

  • monicanelsonfitness January 13, 2011, 4:22 pm

Go Caitlin! That is awesome, 7 is a good number too.:)
I agree, that “Til I Callapse” gets us all through. 🙂

  • debs January 13, 2011, 4:23 pm

I hate to admit this – i really do, but I find Bon Jovi the best to get my going for exercise. I don’t even like Bon Jovi.

I have to agree with Imma Be – Black Eyed Peas too (I hope this reinstates some level of cool?)

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) January 13, 2011, 4:29 pm

Great work on the wrun! I actually have an old Blink 182 song on my IPOD that pumps me up!

  • Lacey @ Lake Life January 13, 2011, 4:31 pm

I love that Eminem song. One of my faves is “What you Waiting for?” by Gwen Stefani…as long as I can get past being called a “stupid ho” lol.

    • Lili January 13, 2011, 4:57 pm

Love Gwen!! I had to listen to this song right now!

  • Mary January 13, 2011, 4:33 pm

out of curiousity, why don’t you tweet links to your HTP posts?

    • Caitlin January 13, 2011, 9:49 pm

Sometimes I do! Would you prefer it if I did it regularly? I wonder if people find that annoying…

  • Liz @ Tip Top Shape January 13, 2011, 4:38 pm

I love “Don’t Stop Believin'”. Basically because it is so inspirational. And I am a total Gleek 😀

  • Marie-Journey to Body Zen January 13, 2011, 5:06 pm

    Congrats on the run! 🙂

  • Lindsay Perrone (goodiesgalore) January 13, 2011, 5:34 pm

Eggs in a public store? You got balls girl.

  • katie January 13, 2011, 5:36 pm

I’m right there with several other commenters: LOVE “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence + the Machine. Also worked really hard to track down “Sexy Boots,” the U2 song that was remixed by a Parisian DJ/Band called Justice (I believe). Heard it in the muzak at Express one day, then heard it on Jenna’s blog as part of a video post…I CANNOT GET ENOUGH OF IT! My 3rd go-to song…”Forget You” (Cee-Lo Green).

  • Lauren @ Clean Eats in the Dirty South January 13, 2011, 5:41 pm

    Awesome splits 🙂
My power song at the moment is “Glorious” by Muse. I’m in a Muse phrase right now and I’m listening to them on repeat alllll day long. My roommate probably wants to throttle me.

  • Johanna B January 13, 2011, 5:54 pm

You just ran a greater distance than I’ve ever walked at one time. Way to go Caitlin!!!!!

  • Ashley @ Thefitacademic January 13, 2011, 6:02 pm

how rude to eat a stinky egg sandwich in public where you force others to smell it! ; ) (it’s hard to come across in print, but I’m being totally light-hearted here!)

  • Sana January 13, 2011, 6:06 pm

Git it girlll! That is a strong run!

  • faith January 13, 2011, 6:46 pm

Eminem is hands down my favorite running music, and the only time I ever listen to him! I also must admit I like to wail along to Stronger by Britany at the end of a run. 🙂

  • Jessica January 13, 2011, 6:47 pm

You have done a lot for me in the last year and a half of reading and cooking and just realizing I am BEAUTIFUL…

but…you have EXPANDED my music listening skills…and that i am much grateful

    • Caitlin January 13, 2011, 9:49 pm

hahah yea! do you like my emo music recommendations on Twitter?!

      • Jessica January 14, 2011, 7:39 am

not on Twitter…dont know much about it….

  • eatingRD January 13, 2011, 6:53 pm

Love listening to hip hop or rap for workouts!! Luda is a favorite. Although I usually want to start dancing! Congrats on your run!

  • Ann @ Turbo Teacher January 13, 2011, 6:56 pm

I also LOVE LOVE LOVE Til’ I Collapse! Another great one is “Remember the Name” by Fort Minor!! 🙂

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin January 13, 2011, 7:15 pm

Congrats on the awesome run! The Black Eyed Peas’ new song “The Time” is a great pump-me-up song! It came on at the gym today and motivated me to zoom through my last mile!

  • Souther Sober Girl Runs January 13, 2011, 7:21 pm

Gold dust by Goldfrapp!! It is siiiiick good.

  • Cassie @ A Very Busy Mind January 13, 2011, 7:24 pm

You know, people can say what they want about Eminem, but I say he’s a lyrical genius.

I love hip hop and hard alternative rock for workouts. There are MANY times I wish I could keep working out (I gym before work, so I’m on a time crunch) even when I’m exhausted, just because I don’t want the music to end!

  • Lauren January 13, 2011, 7:29 pm

Til I Collapse is on EVERY one of my running playlists. It’s my go-to song for running!

  • Kaitlin With Honey January 13, 2011, 7:30 pm

    That’s my kind of sandwich!

I’ve actually never heard this song before and am listening now. It’s a perfect running song!

  • Ashley January 13, 2011, 8:21 pm

I love michael jackson, katy perry, eminem, and taylor swift for running ispiration.

  • LauraJayne January 13, 2011, 9:22 pm

I had to motivate myself today – and I only ran a mile. But I hopped on the treadmill and did it, finished it, and moved on to machines.
I don’t have a “song,” I have an audiobook! I listen to the second Hunger Games book and can only listen to it while running – for extra motivation!

    • Caitlin January 13, 2011, 9:50 pm

      Congrats on your mile!

  • amanda January 13, 2011, 9:23 pm

I love “Bleed it out” linkin park and “blood on my hands” the used

  • Sarah-Mae @ eat, run, knit January 13, 2011, 10:15 pm

I got a pretty slow going 6.2mi run in this afternoon as well! Likewise, this was my longest run since my October marathon!

  • caitie January 13, 2011, 10:27 pm

my 5 yr old cousin that i nannyed for, she liked the song “stuck like glue” by sugarland so i downloaded it and for some reason i am absolutely obsessed with it right now and repeat it soo many times during my runs. the chorus is so fun to run to!

  • Emily January 13, 2011, 11:28 pm

I always start every race with Paramore, Misery Business.

Great way to set a pace, since I recently read that if you push harder as you first start out on your run, your endurance lasts longer during the ending miles! Cool!

  • natalie @ http://healthybalancingact.blogspot.com/ January 14, 2011, 1:25 am

till i collapse is the song i play to pump myself up too,the lyrics just keep me going

  • maria @ Chasing the Now January 14, 2011, 1:28 am

    Excellent run! Congrats!

I did 12 minutes this morning, which was amazing in my view since I’m coming off an injury! My power song is Eminem “Not Afraid.”

  • Marika January 14, 2011, 4:53 am

“Bulletproof” by La Roux always makes me pick up the pace when it comes on my iPod :-). Along with pretty much anything by Lady Gaga!

  • Melodie January 14, 2011, 7:02 am

I used to run to that song!!! lol I LOVE it!! And when he says, left, right, left, right, left… I would get so motivated… DORK!! 🙂

Have you posted or do you post your training schedule? I am running my first 1/2 on April 30th and I am in between 2 schedules that I found on line. I am interested to see what plan you are following!

  • Ali @ Ali Runs January 18, 2011, 9:46 pm

I LOVE that song!! It is one of the most inspirational songs I have found to run with. Makes me feel so much stronger!

  • Sharon Koch January 19, 2011, 5:18 am
