9 Things on 9/9/09

in All Posts

Good afternoon!  My mid-morning snack involved polishing off this bag of Stacy’s Pita Chips.

And lunch was a simple sweet potato, kidney bean, and quinoa combo:

The quinoa was toasted.  I just rinse it, add about 1 teaspoon of EVOO and some salt, spread out on a cookie sheet, and toast at 375 for 18 minutes or so:

Crunchy!

It's already 9/10 here but yesterday some of the things I was loving: an open water ocean pool to swim laps in, being able to "see" my hubs boat go out to sea so I have closure that he's really gone and email from the boat so we at least have some communication, my two boys!

Another stellar quinoa idea! I have yet to try your quinoa that you baked to top yogurt with and I now have to add this one to my list. I am all about this wonder grain and want to try it in as many different forms as possible! Great post!

  • Taylor September 9, 2009, 2:16 pm

Aww what a wonderful list!! I'm going to have to think about my 9 things, and I may also do a post on it 🙂 Linking back to the original of course!

  • hookedup September 9, 2009, 3:30 pm

I am a bit of a math geek so I have spent a ridiculous amount of time thinking about this, every number that is divisible by 9 will add back to 9. Consective multiples of 9 reduce the unit and increase the ten by 1; 9, 18, 27.
9 is one of my fave numbers because there are so many unique properties that other numbers don't.

  • Jess September 9, 2009, 3:46 pm

I've been on a quinoa kick lately so I tried out your recipe for toasted quinoa tonight. Delicious! The flavor reminded me of Chex Mix.

I'm also loving my job, although I am working wayyyyy too much, but it's a pleasure!

  • shawna September 10, 2009, 7:08 am

    Hi Caitlin –

I have a quick question for you. I see that you've listed Organic Dairy as a good thing. Do you choose organic dairy based on the no-antibiotic/no-hormone issue? I ask because I thought I had been doing the right thing choosing organic/free range meats and eggs, but then I read your post about becoming vegetarian and learned that these animals are not necessarily being treated any more humanely than the non-organic. I did some more research and found the same was true for organic dairy animals. This isn't a sneaky question or anything; rather, I'd just like to get your opinion on it since you opened my eyes a bit more to the actual treatment of organic animals.

    Thanks!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point September 10, 2009, 7:14 am

shawna – well, i choose organic dairy for many reasons. yes, the animals are not necessarily treated better, but they are sometimes (organic valley is a good brand treatment-wise, horizon is NOT. horizon is muy evil.). also, i am vegetarian for more reasons than just animal rights. organic farming is better for the environment and pays the farmers a more livable wage.

i do enjoy knowing i am drinking/eating dairy that does not contain antibotics, but i think the environmental issues are more important for me (fewer cehmicals being dumped into the ground etc).

i admire the fact that you do your research!!!

  • shawna September 10, 2009, 7:42 am

Thanks for your response, Caitlin! I agree about the environmental factors of supporting organic foods, and it's one of the reasons I've continued my switch to organic, even after learning about the animal treatment. I'm finding it tough to find a happy medium, though.

Very, very interesting about Horizon. I had no idea! Will have to read more about it.
