Tour De Orlando

in All Posts

Good morning!  So far, I’ve spent my stay-cation the best way I know how:  by getting in a GREAT workout!

I woke up at 6:30 to do a radio interview for Operation Beautiful, which was really fun.  After the interview was over, I promptly passed back out and woke up around 8:20.

The Husband and I woke up slowly while watching today’s stage of the Tour de France.  Have you been following it?  We are pretty obsessed and watch a little bit of it almost everyday.  I snacked on toast with Brazil Nut Butter (homemade) while we watched the guys crash!  Yikes.

And then I got ready for a bike ride!  How come the professional riders look so cool and I just look like a dork? 😉

I think it’s the pigtails.

We did a short ride — the Husband had to go to work — but we managed to do about 6 miles in 25 minutes.

I came home and promptly changed into running clothes.  I suspected it was going to be too hot out for a long run, and I was right — it was about 90 degrees and scorching hot!  I managed to bang out 2.0 miles before I gave up.

  • Duration:  18 minutes
  • Distance: 2.0 miles

And… then I did strength moves (can you tell I was super excited to have some free time!?):

  • 30 push-ups
  • 100 bicycle crunches
  • PT knee moves
  • 20 reverse crunches
  • 30 chest flys with 3 pound weights

Post-workout brunch:

I had two whole wheat waffles with Oikos Greek yogurt, coconut, flax, and blueberries.

To die for!

Do you like to work out on vacation (or stay-cations) or do you prefer to just lay around and relax?

I love having the luxury to work out at my own pace! I'm totally with you. Taking the time to stretch afterwards feels like zen whereas during the week I'm wondering how little stretching I can get away with.

You've got the workout in + brunch = best stay-cation combo.

Have you heard of shakeology. IT sounds like amazing grass but different ingredients. I'm interested in it but I want the blog worlds point of view.

  • runnerskitchen July 22, 2009, 8:17 am

I love having extra time to workout! Going for a run, bike ride, or walk during a vacation seems like more fun than usual 🙂

  • whitsgettingfit July 22, 2009, 8:17 am

I love working out while on vacation. You don't feel so rushed…

  • Matt July 22, 2009, 8:18 am

Lol I run everyday even if I am on vacation!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point July 22, 2009, 8:19 am

kathryn – i hadnt hear of it but i looked it up. my initial thoughts are they they say its a "meal replacement" shake, which i guess i just don't like because who the hell wants to drink a shake insead of eating real food? LOL there's only 140 calories per scoop so i'm not sure what you're suppose to mix it with to make it a meal. it does look like it has a lot of good stuff it in, but the chocolate flavor also has a bunch of less-natural ingredients and added fructose. amazing grass is literally just powdered greens. and shakeology is expensive! i think i would like to try it, but i doubt that i personally would buy it.

I love to work out on vacation. It feels like a treat not to have to rush through my workout!

  • roseyrebecca July 22, 2009, 8:20 am

This is weird but I've been considering going to my parent's house throughout the summer vacation. I go there 2 weeks a month to work at my old office job. While I'm there I sign up for two week trials to different gyms in the area. So far I like NY Sports Club the best!! (I usually go to Gold's Gym when I'm home) I love working out while I'm on "vacation" It makes me feel better about indulging a bit!!

  • Annie July 22, 2009, 8:23 am

Hi Caitlin! Congrats on the Operation Beautiful getting out there and on the radio too! I was just wondering, maybe one day you could show us all (uniformed people) how to do a reverse crunch? And actually maybe a few other ab exercises. I just dont get it!
Maybe its just me but I feel completely lost with them haha..thanks!

  • Colleen July 22, 2009, 8:24 am

Love, love, love working out on vacation – no worries about time constraints! We're taking a staycation in a few weeks too and I CAN'T WAIT!

    Lovely waffles!! 🙂

Sometimes, working out by cueing into "what do I need at this moment" fuels me…I am compiling an encouragement newlestter and have a Nourishment Question for you…what nourishes you? Answer and you can win Amazing meal….

what stinks is that for me, my workouts are more rushed on vacation than they are on any normal day. We're usually out of town and have ten billion things to do that day and even squeezing in 20 minutes isn't happening! So unfortunately, sometimes my workouts are put on the backburner for me on "vacation" (i say that word loosely because we have to go visit both sides of the family at once… we are non-stop from morning to night!)…

but so glad you got such an awesome work out in today!!

I always think that I look super-dorky riding my bike. It must be the helmet–there is no way to make those look cool. Oh well, I'd rather be dorky than a quadriplegic.

  • eatingRD July 22, 2009, 8:38 am

I like to have active stay-cations, where it's not really 'working out' per se, but more just active activities like hiking, biking, walking all over, etc. It just makes me feel great. Enjoy your break, yay!

  • Angharad July 22, 2009, 8:44 am

I LOVE having the luxury to work out if I can. It's really hard to fit in on vacation but for staycation it's a little easier since at least you're in your confort zone.
I think it's one of the best things to do on staycation since you get back to feeling physically your best while ALSO resting up – perfect!!

  • MarathonVal July 22, 2009, 8:48 am

I LOVE working out while on vacation. It gives me energy, and I enjoy eating more decadent vacation foods that much more!

I think I got it from my dad – he is obsessive about hitting the gym while on vacation too – but my husband thinks we are both crazy, he thinks vacations are supposed to be an escape from fitness 🙂

  • Therese July 22, 2009, 8:50 am

I love being able to workout when I have a day off! I feel like I have so much more energy and really enjoy it more.

I ran this morning at 6 am and it already felt too hot. I'm not sure when is the best time to run in summer Florida heat…

  • Betsy July 22, 2009, 8:51 am

We've been watching the tour every morning @ breakfast. I love it- especially Phil Liggett's voice. And I follow lance & george hincapie on twitter!

  • Deva July 22, 2009, 8:52 am

I love to workout when I'm on vacation, just to keep me in some sort of routine, it's part of my normal routine, so why should that change? 🙂

  • Eve July 22, 2009, 9:00 am

I love working out on vacations. Whether it's getting in a hard core workout or doing a ton of walking in a new place.

  • Jessica July 22, 2009, 9:02 am

    Caitlin,
I ran across (no pun intended!) your blog through Operation Beautiful.
    You are very inspirational!
Good luck with everything and keep up the great work!

  • Amanda July 22, 2009, 9:11 am

I'm with you! Extra time = extra exercising, whether that's longer walks or more yoga and pilates classes. My favorite is when I can do back-to-back classes.

  • Niki July 22, 2009, 9:15 am

Definitely love working out on my staycations! The rest of the day I ususally sit around and relax.

  • Rachel July 22, 2009, 9:15 am

I used to be of the philosophy that vacations were for relaxing only (and, um, overeating) but now that I've started trying to get at least mini-workouts into vacations, I find I enjoy them a lot more because I have more energy!

  • Rose July 22, 2009, 9:18 am

I like a mix of both! I actually prefer to work out on vacation because I actually feel like I have time for it and don't have to squeeze anything in, you know?

  • Paige@ Running Around Normal July 22, 2009, 9:34 am

Tour de Orlando hehe too cute. Glad you're enjoying your time off!

  • Runeatrepeat July 22, 2009, 9:44 am

    Have a great stay-cation!!!

  • Carolina John July 22, 2009, 9:46 am

nice! i think the pro's look better thanks to all of those sponsor stickers on their helmets. that is all.

actually, you are much prettier than most of the guys in the tour de france anyway. some of the european riders are very effeminate though.

  • Bec July 22, 2009, 10:29 am

great brick workout! I always feel like a dork in my cycling stuff too@

  • randomlymikey July 22, 2009, 10:34 am

i love to work out on vacations! you workout sounds awesome and those waffles….drool….

  • Emily (A Nutritionist Eats) July 22, 2009, 10:50 am

I do like to work out on vacations but if I'm around family it usually turns into walks, etc. Low-key. Which is fine with me 🙂

  • seesaraheat July 22, 2009, 11:16 am

I love to work out on vacations, especially if the hotel I'm at has a nice gym or if I'm somewhere that I want to explore a lot through walking 🙂 And the added benefit is when you get back home (or staycation is over) you feel great that you kept it up!

  • just me July 22, 2009, 11:39 am

you did a 100 bicycle crunches?!?!?! good god woman! i only wish my abs were that strong…jealous.

  • nicoleishappy July 22, 2009, 11:42 am

I Love staycations and working out when i want and how long i want without any deadlines or such. your brunch sounds great.i love waffels.

  • Kathy (Moving Beyond Perfection) July 22, 2009, 11:43 am

I love to work out during vacation! It's just such a luxury to have extra time to do so and not feel stressed out or panicked about everything that needs to get done. Plus, I always love to indulge more during vacations too so it makes me feel good about my body!

  • Erin July 22, 2009, 11:49 am

I've recently started to enjoy working out on vacations. Makes it less of a glut-fest than my normal practice of vacationing. 😉

  • Beth @ CrossBorderCravings July 22, 2009, 11:50 am

Great question! If it's a longer vacation I like to keep on working out so I can enjoy all the good eats and feel good! If it's a short, weekend style trip I get my workouts in during the week so at the weekend I can just relax…. :O)

  • Ada July 22, 2009, 11:53 am

It looks like you got a great workout! I enjoy working out, so on vacation I specifically seek out exercise. I usually find vacation a fun time to explore new workout options, though, such as water skiing or surfing.

  • Sarah W. July 22, 2009, 11:55 am

historically on vacations I always laid around and relaxed which usually meant I ate more than normal and came back 7lbs heavier (the only exception being the 10 days I spent in Belgium/Paris/Amsterdam with my family – I ate alot and walked alot and it balanced out!)

but this year is my year to change and while we're at nagshead, NC for a week w/ hubby's family I fully intend to get at least 3 runs in and 3 body weight strength workouts (found some 7min routines online) along with abs daily or every other day – must.stick.to.my.goal!

  • The Shabby Princess July 22, 2009, 12:10 pm

Hmm, to workout on vacation/staycation or not… I think it depends. I had a staycation a few weeks ago and told myself I would work out like normal, but, my body was soooo tired that I really didn't do too much working out. I justified thay my body needed the rest–and I was right. I felt 110% better the next week and pounded out some amazing runs. It all just depends.

I think if you're on vacation, and out of town or something, that makes it fun to try and get a workout it–running in a new neighborhood, hiking, or taking a local yoga class I think make it easy to be active, but, sometimes, it's nice to just rest and enjoy.

Glad you're enjoying some time off! You deserve it.

All your work outs look fun! Nice waffles!

  • Amie July 22, 2009, 12:44 pm

    Your waffles look so good!

I like to workout on vacation bc I don't feel pressed for time, or like I have to hurry through anything. I can take my time and enjoy doing what I'm doing.

  • Susan July 22, 2009, 1:45 pm

Of course I've been obsessively following the Tour!!! I have the cartoon live feed from the Tour website open on my work window in the mornings 🙂 My faves are pretty much out of the running, but at this point I'll just be happy if Contador doesn't win. He's a douche. I'm pretty happy about the Schleck brothers performances today 🙂

  • redhead75 July 23, 2009, 5:04 am

I do workout on vacation but not as long and obsessively. If I miss it oh well. I don't lift heavy weights on vacation just do fun cardio.
