I did a little shopping this afternoon for the Healthy Living Summit.  I feel like I have a closet of clothes but nothing to wear to the conference itself! One of the trouble with working from home is that you basically live in sweatpants. πŸ™‚

Fuel for shopping:

CIMG7431

I made a Green Monster with Amazing Grass, unsweet almond breeze, a banana, and ice.  So refreshing.

Then, I tackled the mall.  I didn’t have much luck finding stuff that worked, although I did have a lot of fun looking. πŸ™‚

CIMG7459

Fail:

CIMG7452

I did have a lot of opportunities to post Operation Beautiful notes, though! πŸ™‚

CIMG7449

I ended up buying:

CIMG7463

A pretty casual shirt, St. Ives Apricot Scrub (best… thing… ever), and a poor women’s Garmin (aka a $9 watch from Target).

Somewhere, the Husband is breathing a sigh of relief and clutching our credit cards….. LOL

I came home and heated up last night’s leftovers.  I stuffed the breaded eggplant, polenta, and pasta sauce into a Flat Out wrap.

CIMG7464

Everything tastes better in wrap form, if you ask me!

CIMG7465

What do you think of the current styles out there?  I think some are nice, but (this is going to make me sound really old) the shorts are all TOO SHORT!  Remember when Bermuda shorts were all the rage?*  I miss those days.  Also, can someone please explain leggings to me?

* I have been informed that Bermuda shorts are, in fact, still cool and on sale at Old Navy. Yesssssssssss!

I agree with you about the styles right now… and as someone who teaches in a middle school, the shorts ARE too short… and leggings do not interest me at all! I think it's pretty sad when the pockets in shorts are actually longer than the shorts themselves (has anyone noticed this trend??)!! I also dislike the very baggy look for tops and dresses that's in… not too flattering!!

  • Anonymous July 22, 2009, 1:06 pm

Ugh I know! I still love bermudas. I think leggings are cute with some stuff.. And yes! The shorts are like teeny tiny. When some girls walk by in them I just wanna cover my eyes!

  • Mandy July 22, 2009, 1:07 pm

Bermuda shorts aren't cool? LOL Crap! I have three pair I just bought from Old Navy!!!

Have you tried XXI? I know it's more geared towards much younger girls… but I was in there the other day and saw a ton of stuff I'd love to have. Their prices are usually reasonable, too.

Express is having some good deals right now, too!

  • Therese July 22, 2009, 1:09 pm

hmmm I'm wearing bermuda shorts today…hope their not too out of style lol!

I'm 6' tall so EVERYTHING is too short on me!

  • Meghann July 22, 2009, 1:09 pm

haha are you copying my posing in the mirror serious kissy face? πŸ™‚

Old Navy has shorts at decent length and I just got a great pair of kacki bermudas from Target not too long ago.

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point July 22, 2009, 1:09 pm

mandy – haha I think they are cool still!! i just couldnt find any today!

  • Kara July 22, 2009, 1:12 pm

You should have gotten that green dress, it was super cute!

  • Rose July 22, 2009, 1:17 pm

I LOVED the bermuda shorts too!

  • Shannon (The Daily Balance) July 22, 2009, 1:20 pm

your wrap looks awesome! Hate the short shorts, but don't hate on the leggings! Super functional for layering!

  • Jess July 22, 2009, 1:21 pm

Bermuda shorts were popular last season, so I don't know why they aren't in the stores now…I hope I have better luck than you did (no offense!) since I'm in search of professional-casual clothes for my teacher training coming up. Oy.

I'm a HUGE fan a leggings though, as long as your top covers your arse. Love 'em! Great to run in too, haha.

  • kayevs July 22, 2009, 1:23 pm

For my job I only need scrubs. So at home I live in boys boxers all summer long πŸ™‚ So comfy. But I feel your pain…not much to wear out of the house!
    Enjoy your staycation!

  • Beth July 22, 2009, 1:24 pm

    I hate MOST current clothes!

But bermudas are back now! I bought two pairs recently at Old Navy. They are very flattering because they're longer but close fitting, not baggy and old lady-ish.

  • whitsgettingfit July 22, 2009, 1:26 pm

I still wear bermudas! I love 'em! American Eagle has some cute shorts that are not too short. I bought two pairs last week.

  • Gina July 22, 2009, 1:29 pm

"Somewhere, the Husband is breathing a sigh of relief and clutching our credit cards" hahahaha, this made me laugh because mine is the same way.

  • fittingbackin July 22, 2009, 1:41 pm

The shorts are SUPER short – like oh my. I'm a fan of leggings but only in the winter with mid-calf boots and shortish dresses/long shirts!

  • Anna July 22, 2009, 1:46 pm

I have nothing to wear to the summit too! I also have a closet full of stuff that I'm dissatisfied with. I haven't gone shopping in ages!

  • Stephanie July 22, 2009, 1:47 pm

They ARE too short!! One place I've found for shorts of a good length (and still somewhat "stylish")– Ann Taylor Loft. And, I think they are still having their sale where all shorts are $25!

  • roseyrebecca July 22, 2009, 1:48 pm

Today's shorts are way too short! And I hate when girls where leggings as pants! I usually wear mine under dresses or skirts.

I love shopping, even if I don't come home with anything!!

  • Eve July 22, 2009, 1:48 pm

I have such trouble finding clothing I like. And my husband sighs in relief too πŸ™‚ I tend to stick with capris and bermuda shorts in the summer. If you do it well they can look great with heels! Some people can pull of leggings, personally I can't!

  • BayleeΓ’β„’Β₯ July 22, 2009, 1:49 pm

That black white adn green dress is so cute. as a so called 'trendy' generationer (im 19), i couldnt agree more that things are too short. i have quite a few dresses that i pull up a little bit and pair with shorts or jeans instead. i think it looks classier.

i went through the leggings phase…but dont ask me why or what they were used for. they do not keep your legs warm underneath a skirt in the winter, no matter what anyone tries to tell you

  • BOBBI McCORMICK July 22, 2009, 1:49 pm

yes I am so with you I havent been shopping in a while because I dont like this whole 80's style going on!!! Yes the shorts are too short!!!

  • Meg C. July 22, 2009, 1:53 pm

looove the st ives apricot scrub!
and as far as leggings go… stick with dark colors and don't wear them as pants, and you'll be all set!

  • chandra July 22, 2009, 1:59 pm

OMG – I feel ya on the current styles, I went off in a post about ruffles last week. LOL And I agree about the shorts. I wanted to get a new pair of kakhi shorts and jean shorts for Vegas but they were all SO short I might as well just wear my hipster undies out on the street instead! It's insane.

    And I don't get leggings either… I have no style though so I can't say much. πŸ™‚

  • happygoluckyalex July 22, 2009, 1:59 pm

    sweatpants to work? Yes please!

  • Dana July 22, 2009, 2:03 pm

I get to wear scrubs to work which is just as nice!

As for current styles – the 80's are back. The neon colors…HATE IT!!!

Maybe you need to ask the Husband to buy you a Garmin for Christmas, and nothing else! Hehe.

  • eatingRD July 22, 2009, 2:05 pm

Shopping is exhausting to actually find things. It seems that when I'm looking to buy I can never find anything and then when I can't buy I usually find all the cute stuff! I know, I hate short shorts! I'm going to have to go to Old Navy asap. Not a fan of leggings, makes me look too stickly. Love the wrappage too πŸ™‚

  • Jess July 22, 2009, 2:13 pm

I look terrible in Bermuda shorts, so it's all good.

Wait…working in sweatpants is trouble!? πŸ˜‰

  • NYgirl@heart July 22, 2009, 2:13 pm

I just had this conversation on Saturday when I was getting my hair cut. I was flipping through Style magazine and thinking how gross the new trend is. It's an 80s-early 90s style that is frumpy and unattractive. Beyonce is gorgeous but every pic I saw of her made her look disheveled and so unattractive. I DON'T LIKE IT!!
    Wow..I feel old too…sigh….

  • Kim July 22, 2009, 2:16 pm

Shorts are way too short now! OMG!

I don't get the leggings thing either.

Love my bermuda shorts that I have from Old Navy! They rock!!

  • Spotty Prep July 22, 2009, 2:19 pm

St.Ives Apricot Scrub is the best stuff ever! Have you tried Ann Taylor Loft? They still have bermudas up here and I buy all my work clothes there. They have awesome sales πŸ™‚

  • Kelly (Beneath It All) July 22, 2009, 2:22 pm

I heard you on the radio this morning!!!! I was coming home from the gym and changed the station and there you were! Wow! That is sooo awesome. πŸ™‚

  • Tyler July 22, 2009, 2:25 pm

legging are only good for running, in my opinion! and i don't really think very short shorts are in, except for 12 year old girls. that being said, i still wear my short shorts from american eagle i got in high school sometimes…but i prefer skirts and dresses in the summer πŸ™‚

  • K from ksgoodeats July 22, 2009, 2:33 pm

I love your poor woman's Garmin – I have one of those, too! Sorry about the shopping failures. I usually get my nicer clothes at Express, Macy's (they have so many sales – $12 for a pair of jeans once), and H&M.

  • Niki July 22, 2009, 2:40 pm

I agree…so many of the shorts out now are either "Mom shorts" or wayyyy too short. I don't like picking shorts out of my butt, thankyouverymuch.

  • Kaolee Hoyle July 22, 2009, 3:10 pm

Bermudas always look so good on other people…(sigh)

  • Anonymous July 22, 2009, 3:22 pm

The St. Ives Aprircot scrub is not so great for your skin, just an FYI. The abrasive substance in it, isn't good for our delicate faces.

  • Mel @ She Runs Brooklyn July 22, 2009, 3:29 pm

Your OpBu (new slang?) note gave me the chills.

It really does work haha πŸ™‚

  • lilveggiepatch July 22, 2009, 3:31 pm

St. Ives used to be my favorite until I discovered Say Yes! to Carrots… they make a great scrub with smaller grains so they can't get stuck in your pores. They still exfoliate all the icky away, though!

  • The Shabby Princess July 22, 2009, 3:35 pm

I LOOOOOVE Bermuda shorts!! I don't like showin' off all my leggie legs–I'm proud of what running has done for my legs, but, not that proud–plus, I feel so exposed. (does this feeling come with age? Because like 5-6 years ago I was all about the short shorts!) Bermudas are my favorite!

Where did you get that cute shirt you bought? I love it!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point July 22, 2009, 4:24 pm

anon – it works for me πŸ™‚

    shabby – its from target!

  • Lauren July 22, 2009, 4:56 pm

I feel that everytime I go to the mall with a mission of finding something particular, I fail misserably. I think the best outfits usually come when we aren't looking, don't need it, or can't afford it! Ugh, hate that!

I never understood the whole leggin under a short dress phase. (Is that even still out there?) I'm pretty sure that one died off fast.

So glad you are enjoying your stay-cation.

  • Melissa's Journey July 22, 2009, 4:59 pm

Can I ask what you do with the St Ives scrub? Is it for your body or face?? I'm always looking for new items like that πŸ™‚

I hear ya – I feel like I have NOOOO cute clothes for the summit! I'm taking a different route though and borrowing from friends πŸ™‚ My hubby is also very thankful!

  • Amy July 22, 2009, 5:20 pm

Give Kohls a shot as well if you have one around. I got super cute denim bermuda shorts (those are near knee length, right?). They were super cheap too!

  • Sarah W. July 22, 2009, 5:29 pm

what store did you try those dresses on at? that burnt orange one looked promising – too bad it failed πŸ™

  • Anonymous July 22, 2009, 5:32 pm

I read your blog everyday! Where did you get your new shirt?? Sooo cute!!!
    Thanks so much

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point July 22, 2009, 5:33 pm

melissa – check this out: http://www.healthytippingpoint.com/2009/04/project-glow.html i use it on my face and back.

sarah – at the limited! cute on the hanger, not on my bod. LOL.

anon – thanks πŸ™‚ i got the shirt at target.

  • Stacey July 22, 2009, 5:49 pm

The first dress is so cute! And I know what you mean about the living in sweat pants thing, being a nanny and all. I basically wear gym clothes every single day. One time a wore a skirt and the kids said: Why are you all dressed up? Bwhahaha.

And yes, everything IS better in a wrap, hehe.

  • Kathy (Moving Beyond Perfection) July 22, 2009, 5:52 pm

haha I totally agree all the shorts are too short! They are just not flattering and look kind of skanky- I don't know why they are still "in"! I thought we outgrew that phase when the bermuda shorts became popular. I did manage to find 2 really nice, conservative pairs of shorts this summer though (previously I ONLY owned skirts, LOL) — one was from GAP, and one from Banana Republic! Both were on sale at the time! πŸ™‚

  • Niki July 22, 2009, 5:59 pm

I definitely think the shorts are too short now! I stick to mostly summer skirts and dresses! I am more of a classic look girl and don't really get too trendy!

  • Amanda @ Fake Ginger July 22, 2009, 6:04 pm

That green and black dress looks great on you. The shape is super flattering!

And I have to agree about the short shorts. Ugh, I didn't even wear them that short when I was a teenager!

  • HangryPants July 22, 2009, 8:17 pm

Funny. I posted about how I hate the pregnancy style dress, but you didn't seem to run into that problem.

  • Jessica July 22, 2009, 8:31 pm

Ha. I'm really bad because I wear leggings under short shorts. But to be fair it's because I bike to work at night and it's too cold for just shorts and too warm for pants (plus all my pants get caught in the chain if they aren't skin-tight).

But I am by no means the paragon of fashion. I just wear whatever I want because I don't care what people think and I work mostly by myself anyway.

I have a couple pairs of bermuda shorts and like them best.

  • Oxidaisy July 23, 2009, 12:02 am

I don't know about the styles in Florida right now, because i'm from another country.

But here everybody has a solution for the tiny skirts and leggings: combine them! During summer you can combine a legging that is not all the way to your ankle but still covers up your knees at least, with a mini skirt/short/dress and ballerinas/slippers/sandals.

  • redhead75 July 23, 2009, 4:55 am

Shorts are seriously too short. Shirts are too long and I use to wear leggings….like 20 years ago! It was cool to wear the lace ones under skirt BUT I will NEVER wear them again and i'm sad to see they are back LOL!

I'm so glad you posted this because I thought it was just me getting old.

  • Katie July 23, 2009, 5:03 am

I'm ALL about the Bremuda shorts!

  • Amy July 23, 2009, 5:39 am

Short shorts DO NOT work for me. AT ALL. Even though I'm 5'9 I have pretty short, muscular legs… the shorts just look HORRIBLE on me.

I'm also not a huge fan of the current 'puffy' tops. They are so baggy, they don't really emphasize the right parts.

Hmm.. maybe i just watch too much "What not to Wear" lol

  • Maddy July 23, 2009, 10:05 am

i love that first dress! where's it from?

and ps- the shorts ARE too short. I'm 20 and feel like such a grandma cause I look like a hooch in the shorts I try on haha

  • seesaraheat July 23, 2009, 12:51 pm

I'm a big fan of bermuda shorts myself πŸ˜‰

  • Anonymous July 24, 2009, 12:13 am

Leggings… they're great for hanging around the house. I'm a typical apple shape so for me they accentuate my most toned body part. I pull mine under my heels to make my legs look longer ! x
