Active Work

in All Posts

I’ve managed to fit in some decent activity by taking a few breaks from working.  I hate being chained to my desk!

Break #1: 20 minute stroll around the neighborhood with the doggies.  James definitely enjoyed the action!

My fat little moo cow, Maggie (she doesn’t require a leash — she’s too slow to run away):

It’s absolutely beautiful outside, but it’s not really lay-by-the-pool weather — too breezy.

After the walk, I came back home and worked some more.  When I felt I needed a second break, I busted out the Nuru Exercise Anywhere cards:

CIMG4041

This handy little deck contained work outs for every major muscle group in your body.  This is PERFECT for someone like me, who can never "remember" good strength training exercises to do.  The exercises are organized by muscle group.  And best of all, there’s no equipment required (except hand weights and a towel).  Pretty nifty!

CIMG4045

I did most of the Chest exercises, which were so challenging!

  • 10 regular push-ups
  • 10 incline push-ups
  • 10 decline push-ups
  • 5 pike-push ups (killer!)
  • Seated Reverse Fly – 3 sets of 12 repetitions with 3-lb weights

Here I am, mid-decline push-up:

It was KILLER!  Just a heads up, I’ll be giving away a deck of the Nuru Exercise Anywhere cards next week, so stay tuned for the giveaway!

After my mini-workout, it was time for lunch.  I made use of my Thai leftovers from last night.

To bulk the dish up, I added 3/4 cup cooked brown rice and steamed asparagus.

Mmm Cashew Chicken is my fav!

Back to work I go!

I wish I could take Frank out without a leash! He can’t run for a long time, but he is fast for about 5 minutes 😉 Lunch looks so yummy! It is a little breezy but totally beautiful out!

Your puppies are so cute : ) I was wondering what your tips are for refueling on long run days? Even after running a marathon and running 20-25+ miles a week for the last year and a half I’m always confused how many calories I should try and eat back on long run days and I don’t want to lose weight or hurt my metabolism (like today I burned about a 1000 cal. on my run) and how I should fit that in. How do you determine that for your long runs? Thanks!

OH MY GOSH. The doogies are so cute 🙂

The pups are too cute! I was just wondering if you avoided the rice last night because it was not brown rice? or just weren’t feeling it :o)

ashely – its simple! deteremine your weight maintenance calories (http://www.calorieking.com/tools/weight_maintenance.php). this is how much you would burn on a day you did not exercise. note: i think calorie king is a little low, so add 100 to whatever the calculator says is your maintenance. then, add the calories burned to your run + maintenance calories to figure out how much you need to eat to get enough fuel after a run. i burn about 80 calories an hour. so, if my maintenance is 1800 and i run 10 miles, then i need to eat 1800 + (80*10) = 2600 calories in that day not to lose or gain any weight. 🙂

  • Alison April 17, 2009, 4:12 pm

Cute doggies! What breed is Maggie?

  • Emily April 17, 2009, 4:22 pm

your dogs are adorable! good apartment dogs? my husband and i have talking about getting a dog and have been doing some research, but still not sure what breed to go with.

and those cards are a great tool!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point April 17, 2009, 4:37 pm

maggie is a dachshund and she is a great apartment dog. they really require minimal exercise and aren’t hyper breed. james is a mix (i think a shepherd and dachshund) and he is also very calm. he could go for more activity, but he doesn’t require it or freak out if he doesn’t have it. i love weiner dogs!! get one!! 🙂
