healthy snacks (33)

Now that Henry is mobile (that baby can run FAST!), life has really changed.  But how I eat has changed the most of all.  I simply don’t have time to sit down for a nice, big meal when I’m the only parent on duty. I grab a fork and get ready to sit down and – POOF! – Henry is off, getting into trouble. So that’s where healthy snacks come in!

But here’s the thing… the ‘usual suspects’ bore me.  I like to mix up my snacks and try something different every day. It’s amazing what a little extra effort can do to a snack – taking it from ho-hum to delicious with just a sprinkle of shredded coconut or a sprinkle of a spice.  The name of the game is healthy, fast, portable, and interesting.  So, without further ado…

Here is a list of 10 of my favorite healthy {but not boring} snacks.

#1 – Watermelon, fresh basil, and cheese kebobs.  This is really tasty with feta, but it’s also great with any white cheese.  I make them ahead of time and grab a kebob or two out of the fridge when I’m feeling snacky.

healthy snacks (2)

#2 – Anne’s Peanut Butter Bars.  Remember how these bars sustained Kristien and I through the newborn stage of Henry’s life?  Yup.  I lived off these bars (and still do!).  I love that they’re no-bake and can be made in five minutes or less.

#3 – Although Anne’s bars are great, sometimes I’m craving something more savory than sweet.  I also like to make tomato and cheese kebobs.  Sharp cheddar is my favorite cheese with tomatoes!

healthy snacks (4)

Yes, everything tastes better in kebob form.  Kebob form is very useful for snacks on the go.  And we’re on the go all the time!

healthy snacks (14)

#4 – Dates stuffed with nut butter.  Almond butter is the best.  A quick sprinkle of shredded coconut makes it feel gourmet!

healthy snacks (20)

#5 – Holy Deliciousness Hummus is excellent on toast, crackers, chips – anything!  What makes my Holy Deliciousness Hummus so delicious?  Goat cheese!

#6 – I like to buy the pre-portioned ‘snack cheese’ (like string cheese, but not stringy) because there’s no cutting involved.  And they fit perfectly in Celery Boats.  Love the crunch.

healthy snacks (22)

#7 – Speaking of cheese… You’ve got to try a Warm Cheesy Pear.  Scoop out the center of a pear, put some cheddar jack cheese down, and microwave it for 45 seconds.  A sprinkle of cinnamon makes the flavors pop.  I really like snacking on things like this (and like the nut butter dates) because they feel so fancy but are quick to prepare.  Quickness is key!  If it isn’t fast, I’m not going to eat it.

healthy snacks (24)

#8 – Gotta love the old standby – Peanut Butter Toast.  I top mine with craisins, raisins, or fresh berries for something different.

healthy snacks (27)

#9 – More cheese treats!  Apple slices + cheese pieces keeps me feeling fuller, longer than a plain piece of fruit.

healthy snacks (29)

#10 – Roasted Chickpeas. I love Diana’s recipe but sometimes, if I’m not in the mood to mix a lot of spices, I just toss the chickpeas in some oil and curry powder. Bake and eat.

healthy snacks (31)

This awesome selection of healthy snacks was brought to you by Sargento’s Natural Cheese Snacks, which I’ve always eaten and loved.  Especially the string cheese.  Makes me feel like a kiddo again.

Sargento’s has a pretty fun “Build a Smart Snack” tool on their website if you are looking for other healthy snack suggestions.

In honor of healthy and delicious snacks, I’m giving away a year’s supply of cheese!  Well, I should note that a “year’s supply” is 12 coupons to buy 12 packs of Cheese Snacks, which contain 12 snacks each.  So that’s 144 pieces of cheese, roughly three snacks a week – give or take.  Personally, I can put away a heck of a lot of cheese, but let’s go ahead and say – a year’s supply of cheese!

To enter to win a year’s supply of cheese, simply leave a comment describing your favorite healthy snack.  Bonus points if it’s easy to prepare and can be eaten on the go while chasing around one active little man. Winking smile

  • Elise @ Expeditions of Elise April 18, 2013, 10:08 am

I love snacks! It’s hard to decide on a favorite, but I’d say I really like smoothies as a healthy snack: fruit, plain yogurt, soy milk and maybe some greens. That’s all I need!

  • Aishah @ Coffee, Love, Health April 18, 2013, 10:08 am

I love plain rice cakes topped with a nut butter, cinnamon, and raisins and/or dates.. so delicious! Sometimes ill put little pieces of dark chocolate on their, too, if I am feeling the need for something sweet 🙂 Thanks for all your great snack tips- love the cheese kebobs!!

  • Natalie April 18, 2013, 10:08 am

ricotta cheese, tomato, and a drizzle of oil on a whole wheat cracker or piece of bread. SO good and SO quick. The tomato sticks right into the ricotta so the snack doesn’t fall apart!

  • Samantha April 18, 2013, 10:11 am

My favorite is cheese and crackers!

  • Ashley April 18, 2013, 10:11 am

I feel like I go through phases where I’m obsessed with a snack and then 3 weeks later I HAVE to have something different! One of my favorites is having hard-boiled eggs hand, always peeling the shells ahead of time to save time during the snackage. 🙂 I like a greek yogurt with a hard-boiled egg, tons of protein. I also love a smashed hard-boiled egg mixed with avocado on a piece of toast. I love snacks. 🙂

  • Melissa April 18, 2013, 10:12 am

I love mini sweet peppers halved & stuffed with hummus with green olives sliced on top. Thanks.

  • Stephanie April 18, 2013, 10:22 am

    I love hummus with cucumbers.

  • Kelly April 18, 2013, 10:22 am

Awesome!! I love to make a “snack plate” — it also feels gourmet! I use different items depending on what I have on hand… but it ALWAYS includes cheese (good for calcium and protein), nuts (almonds usually), a veggie (cut up celery, cukes, sliced tomatoes, etc with salt and pepper!), maybe a “dip” of some sort (hummus, guac, etc.), and sometimes olives or a pickle spear. I get loads of nutrients and different textures and it couldn’t be quicker!!

  • Katie April 18, 2013, 10:22 am

  • Grace April 18, 2013, 10:26 am

All this talk of cheese and snacks is making me hungry! One of my favorite snacks is an heirloom tomato salad. The more colorful the better. So a few small chopped heirloom tomatoes, a sargento mozzarella stick chopped into bite sized pieces, a splash of extra virgin olive oil, splash of balsamic vinegar and a bit of sea salt. DELISH!

    • Amanda April 18, 2013, 9:34 pm

I make this salad too but also add fresh basil! It’s fabulous.

  • Claire @ Live and Love to Eat April 18, 2013, 10:26 am

  • Christina April 18, 2013, 10:31 am

These are great… for really simple snacks I buy the bag of crudites (has brocooli califlower and carrots) from TJs, usually eat it with hummus. But your ideas are much neater!
Brie melted on pears with a little balsamic is amazing too.

For a savory snack, I toast one Arnold’s whole wheat sandwich thin and spread a laughing cow light Swiss cheese wedge on top with two slices of smoked hickory tofurkey. It is a very flavorful, non messy, open faced sandwich for only 130 calories. For a sweet snack, I like a handful of trail mix.

  • Sarah C April 18, 2013, 10:45 am

I’m a cheese and crackers type of girl. I love pre-packaged cheese pieces, it is so easy to grab and go. I eat it with a big wasa-type cracker.

Not as portable, but we have started making afternoon smoothies. My toddler is boycotting fruits and veggies in their natural form, so I put everything in my blender cup for smoothies – spinach, carrots, banana, greek yogurt and some unsweetened cranberry juice. Sometimes I add some ground flaxseed for added fiber. It’s about 150 calories and it keeps us full for several hours. Instead of cocktail hour, we have smoothie hour!

  • Rebecca April 18, 2013, 10:45 am

I love homemade spiced pita chips: take whole wheat pita and cut it up into triangles. Combine a bit of olive oil with cumin, coriander, garlic powder, chili powder, salt and pepper in a big bowl, then toss the pita triangles in the oil until coated. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes or until crunchy. (You may want to give them a toss mid cooking.) These are delicious plain or with hummus.

Ashley from My Food N Fitness Diaries turned me on to this easy snack – banana, spoonful of peanut butter, and a little handful on chocolate chips. Heat in the microwave for like 20 seconds. It is sooo good, great for a sweet craving, and it is sooo filling even for a pregnant woman!

I used to have crackers with it, but in the attempt to rein in my carb intake, I’ve scratched the crackers and just gobble up the cheese and tomatoes. It is a great on-the-go snack because I typically have the tomatoes cut up ahead of time. YUM!

But I always have a low-fat cheese stick after work before the gym – so it would be amazing to win this!

  • Erin April 18, 2013, 11:17 am

  • Stephanie April 18, 2013, 11:25 am

Love some veggies, cheese, and hummus!

  • Amanda April 18, 2013, 11:25 am

We also have a near 11 month old on the go and here’s our favorite quick snack of the moment: combine sunflower seeds, almonds, raisins, coconut flakes and voila! We add things as we have them such as pumpkin seeds, etc. Totally do the PB dates in our house too. I think I must have seen it on your blog before? I also pre-make our own pita chips for hummus and kale chips for when we’re feeling snack-y for chips! Pita chips are so easy with Ezekiel pitas because they come apart easily and can olive oil, salt and thyme them before popping in oven and slicing.

  • Stephanie April 18, 2013, 11:26 am

    apples and peanut butter!

  • Kristin @ Celebrate The Goodness April 18, 2013, 11:26 am

I’m a fan of hard boiled eggs and vegan jerky for savory snacks. One of my faves is quick trail mix – whatever dried fruit and nuts are around, plus coconut flakes and mini chocolate chips for pizzazz. A banana with on-the-go packets of nut butters are also great – I especially like Dark Chocolate Dreams 🙂
Yes, there is a chocolate theme here. It’s almost as good as cheese!

    Sunbutter on mini pretzels!

  • Carrie L April 18, 2013, 11:33 am

  • Chrissy April 18, 2013, 11:34 am

Microwave popcorn, does that count as healthy? It’s definitely easy to prepare. 🙂

  • molly @ heart, sole & cereal April 18, 2013, 11:34 am

i would love to win a year’s supply of sargento! so many of their snacks are my favorite for on the go – i love cheese sticks with fruit!

  • Jen F April 18, 2013, 11:36 am

As others have said, I’m also a big fan of “ants on a log” – you can use any nut butter on top of your celery (or even cream cheese), and you can mix up the “ants” by using raisins, craisins, any fresh berry, or other dried fruit.

Also, I love “caprese skewers” – mozzarella cheese, basil, cherry/grape tomatoes (usually works best if cut in half) all on a skewer (or you can call them kabobs if you want 😉 ) drizzled with balsamic.

And thanks (to everyone) for all of the new snack ideas!

  • Susanne April 18, 2013, 11:39 am

  • Alexis April 18, 2013, 11:44 am

I’m a huge fan of “ants on a log” — celery, peanut butter with raisins sprinkled on top. I sort of feel like I’m five years old, but it’s a truly underrated snack (and this coming from someone who doesn’t like raisins!)

Other winning combos include toast/peanut butter/banana slices/cinnamon sprinkle; apple and cheddar cheese and greek yogurt with oats/nuts stirred in. I’m sort of a snacker 😐

  • LaurenG April 18, 2013, 11:44 am

Almonds, dried fruit and cheese is my favorite snack.

  • Amy April 18, 2013, 12:07 pm

These all look great- can’t wait to try a few! I love to make trailmix with whatever i have on hand for an easy snack, or sometimes I’ll make it by just mixing things from the bulk bins at Central Market or WF. I also love carrots! I chop a bunch at the beginning of the week and snack on them all day at work. Would love some cheese- thanks for hosting this 🙂

  • Nina April 18, 2013, 2:42 pm

I’m trying to not snack right now, so all I try to grab now are the blueberries that are in season. I used to “snack” on whole meals, so it’s a learning curve for me.

  • Nicole April 18, 2013, 3:08 pm

Banana dogs! It grew out of the need to use up hotdog buns that “someone” wasn’t eating. Toast a bun (or not), smear with (crunchy) almond butter, add a banana (no need to slice), and voila! Easy snack or breakfast. Sprinkle on coconut, chia seeds, or cacao nibs if you’re feeling fancy. Or even drizzle on some honey.

  • Andrea April 18, 2013, 3:09 pm

  • Mikella April 18, 2013, 3:12 pm

Pretty much every single day when I go to work, I take plain yogurt (or cottage cheese) and a variety of mix-ins based on whatever I can dig up in my pantry/fridge. I got the idea because I used to get McD’s yogurt parfaits occasionally when I stopped for coffee, so I decided to save money by (f/m)aking my own.

Some of the add-ins that are common: nuts, dry cereal, clementine wedges, apple, grapes, hard-boiled egg (only in cottage cheese, never tried in yogurt), frozen fruit….I think that is all I have tried so far. My favorite combo is a flavored dry cereal and apples in greek yogurt.

  • Ashlee@HisnHers April 18, 2013, 3:15 pm

  • Shannon April 18, 2013, 3:50 pm

Ooh looks yummy! Does Sargento’s have an organic line? If I eat animal products I prefer organic (and if pastured is available, even better!) I am just scared of the antibiotics, growth hormones, etc., but it’s so hard to be mindful about what you’re putting into your body without going crazy.

  • Amanda April 18, 2013, 3:59 pm

No lie, my go to snack is string cheese!!

  • Alissa April 18, 2013, 4:04 pm

Apologies for all the exclamation points; I’m just jazzed about snack time! 🙂

My favorite healthy snack is probably a handful of cashews! I also like air-popped popcorn 🙂

  • bonnie April 18, 2013, 4:17 pm

I’m surprised… I would have expected you to choose organic dairy rather than sarrgento.. especially after all your comments after Food, Inc and all. As a vegetarian and the wife of a holistic doctor, I would have thought you would purchase organic cheeses as the cows at conventional farms may not be slaughtered but they’re almost certainly suffering. I’m curious, do you purchase organic eggs?

    • Franny April 19, 2013, 8:51 am

so weird, I responded to this yesterday but it must have gotten lost in the internet! What I was saying is that because her husband did not attend a medical school and also does not have a doctorate degree, he is not a doctor. I find it misleading to call him that. I’m started medical school this fall and believe me that I’ll be very protective of that doctor title in 4 years after all of the training and 300k of medical school debt!

  • rebecca April 18, 2013, 4:19 pm

  • Cassie April 20, 2013, 1:56 am

I came up with this after reading Anderson Cooper’s book, Dispatches from the Edge. He mentions that he used to keep canned tuna on hand, because it lasts a long time and is very nutritious. I started keeping a pouch in my bag or at work. Now, I don’t have to worry about unstable governments collapsing around me, but being prepared never hurt anyone! I find this is an easy snack to whip up and scarf down when I’m rushing from work to class.

Take one packet of tuna (in the pouch, not a can). Add a bit of olive oil. Sprinkle in your favorite seasoning. I use a rosemary blend, because I looooove rosemary. Mix with a fork, and eat! You can spread it on toast or something, but I generally will have it by itself, if I don’t have time to actually eat a “meal-meal” before class or while working on a big project.

Oh, and I mix it in the pouch, too. You can use a bowl, but the pouch is just easier, I think. It can be added to a salad to create a filling meal, too.

  • Ilene April 20, 2013, 2:23 am

I just stick everything in my purse when I am out and running around and don’t want to get pulled into eating an unhealthy snack. Convenient and tasty!

Usually I wrap mine up like a burrito and pair it with some berries! It keeps me full for hours and is almost more of a “mini meal” than a snack! 🙂

  • Angela April 20, 2013, 6:58 pm

I’ve got three little ones and I gotta say my favorite snack is a quick bowl of cereal. However, if I’m on the go chasing, or driving, or headed to the playground I love to slice up fruit (specifically apples) and hunks of cheddar and throw them into tupperware together for easy snacking that I can quickly throw the lid and finish later, cause really, who gets to eat and ENTIRE apple without bring interrupted? :)))

My easy peezy snack on the go to make for my kids are a homemade batch of hummus and cut veggies and boiled eggs and olives with it. The color and the smooth taste with the crunch of the veggies make them dive into it!

  • Krysta April 22, 2013, 2:16 am

    Definitely banana and almond butter!

  • Laura April 22, 2013, 2:36 am

I LOVE Sargento Cheese (especially the Vermont Cheddar which we can no longer get locally), so I really hope I win :).

An old standby is crackers and Laughing Cow Cheese (another love), or crackers and nut butter (sunflower is my current fave). I recently tried making “paleo popcorn” (cauliflower tossed with soaked cashiews/water blended together with sea salt and then dehydrated), but didn’t cook the cauliflower in my oven long enough (it still tasted good though!). Soaked cashews themselves are an amazing snack, lightly salted. I love Kale chips but I want to try (again!) to make my own, they’re so expensive. Wraps make good snacks, too.

  • Laura April 22, 2013, 2:38 am

Also, and this is going to sound bizarre, but I took some lentils I’d made (confetti cooked in a slow cooker with No-Chicken broth–I think by Imagine foods) and added pickles and mustard. It ended up tasting like chili-dog chili, and was such a weirdly delicious, satisfying snack. I need to go to bed before I go make some 🙂

  • Jenn April 22, 2013, 3:42 am

This comment will probably get lost among the comments of people entering the contest. But, just wanted to say that I am disappointed in your new blogging schedule and content. The posts read like things you wrote weeks in advance and just happended to post one day –i.e., have no relevance to whats current or happening at the moment. I respect your decision to blog less but based on the content of what you have been posting since that decision, I don’t think I will be reading much longer.
