Afternoon! I had glorious plans to go on a 6.0 mile run this morning. In preparation, I fueled up with a Glo Bar:
(I figured I’d at least take an interesting picture of said Glo bar since I’ve eaten one a day for the last week or so.)
I got dressed, found my iPod and Garmin, and was walking out of my house when I realized I REALLY DO NOT HAVE TIME to be running today. I have sooo much work to do, and my anatomy final is tonight. Run will have to wait until tomorrow! Sometimes you gotta prioritize.
I came home and had a mini lunch since I was so full from the Glo bar:
I had toasted French bread with spicy cheese + a Clementine. Yum!
Part of the reason why I am behind on my workload for the day is we are having some family issues, which leads me to the first of today’s Responsible Spending Challenge Tips.
Responsible Spending Challenge Tip #1:
My grandfather is sick, and the Husband and I are concerned that he might have major medical issues around the time of our trip to London (obviously, Grandpa comes first). I spoke to my Dad this morning and he suggested we get traveler’s insurance:
It took me a while to find a plan that would cover trip cancellation or interruption in case of a medical emergency for a non-traveling family member, but eventually I did. The cost ($137 for the both of us combined) would reimburse us up to $1,800 EACH if we have to rearrange our trip.
I never used to buy insurance or protection plans, but I think sometimes it’s actually more *responsible* to shell out the money up front. Can you imagine how much it would cost us to reroute international plane tickets at the last minute?? More than $137!
Responsible Spending Challenge Tip #2:
Keep an eye on your minutes! I keep going over on my cell phone plan, and I’m THIS CLOSE to going over it again this month.
It costs me 40 cents PER MINUTE when I go over, which adds up FAST.
Responsible Spending Challenge Tip #3:
Scan your bills.
Normally, I just open bills, look at the amount due, and write the check. I started to actually READ the bills as part of my Responsible Spending Challenge and realized we are paying $11.99 for HBO – which we never actually signed up for. Oops! I called and complained.
And now… Free Stuff!
Since we’ve all been so responsible with our money lately, it’s time for some FREE STUFF!
Chobani is coming out with two new flavors, 2% Strawberry Banana and 0% Raspberry. To celebrate, the nice folks at Chobani asked me to host a little contest.

NO WAY! More chobani flavors? That is SUPER exciting! Ah! I need to try them!!! I worked at a florist for my first job. It was FABULOUS. About cell phone minutes…last month I managed to go over my texting limit by over 200, which was going to cost me more than $40. I was annoyed that they hadn’t even told me I’d gone over so I called T-mobile ready to complain but then the very nice customer service person just changed my account to retroactively give me more texts for that month. So basically I only had to pay $5 extra instead of 40, and I can change it back whenever I want. No idea if that will work with other companies, or if you’re under contract (mine expired and I just never bothered to renew it but I still kept my same ‘plan’)…but it might be worth looking into in the future if you go way over.

My first job was as a cashier at a gourmet market and garden center when I was 16. I only note that it was a gourmet market because the costumers used to buy the fanciest produce and cheeses (at least they were fancy to me at the young age of 16…now I buy such produce
. Since I would get a little nervous when my line grew too long, I memorized all the produce codes and the types of cheeses by smell and appearance (they would wrap the cheese up in fancy paper such that it looked like gold and would often not label the cheese so it was a lot easier to just know the smell). To this day I can walk into a grocery store and rattle off the produce codes and point out cheeses by name….I try to keep that on the DL and only break it out when provoked (my boyfriend finds it hilarious that I know the codes for cremini mushsrooms and bonnet peppers).
Chobani yogurt with granola is my favorite post-run recovery meal. The amount of protein in Chobani is perfect for recovery!

first job ever was as a cashier in the grocery store and it sucked–now i’m a critical care RN!
My first job was at McDonald’s. It was a small town and that was one of the only employment opportunities for high school stidents. I dreaded the weight gain that I thought would come with the free food perk(at the time I did not really care about what I put in my mouth.) Without getting into the gruesome details, I was “disappointed” in how food was made so I actually lost weight while I worked there since I no longer craved the burgers, fries, or even the shakes. It sucked! But it was a character building job, and it has taught me to respect everyone that works in food service.

My first job was babysitting. I was quite good at it and was usually booked every weekend for a good two years before I decided to find a real job. I considered Wendy’s my first real job. Note to be a good babysitter, no matter how crazy it gets as long as the dishes are done and the house clean by the time the parents come home everything is good.

Well, my job isn’t quite ‘official’, but I absolutely love my employer and my place of work…
until my mom thought I’d appreciate a little something extra. She hired me!
MY HOUSE! I don’t have my license yet, so this job works out perfectly… I get paid to cook dinner for my family everynight! Actually, I did it free of charge
My first job was at a movie theater. I worked there for 3 years throughout high school. It wasn’t the greatest job but it sure taught me how to be responsible with money and handle people.
Oh my, my first job was when I was 17 at a local shoe store. I knew NOTHING about shoes and would often just make up stuff to tell people about shoes. A couple of times I ended up with customers who knew a lot about shoes and would call me out. I really hated that job. haha!
My first job was at a Hallmark card shop ” Hi Welcome to Hallmark, how may i help you??”
I need to be better about checking my bills, too!
My first job = counter girl at a local dry cleaner’s.

My first job was in the family business which was a bookstore! (It’s in my blood!) I learned how to count back change at this job (I think I was 14) and have always valued that because I can tell now when I get right change or not!! Cashiers today rarely count back. Hows that for saving $ too!! Great giveaway, good luck on the test! M

I worked at the parish rectory, answering the phone and sorting mail, when I was 13!

Baby sitting! Then I worked doing birthday parties at the YMCA.
I worked at Hoffman’s Playland in upstate NY. As a 14-year-old, they decided I was mature enough to run small amusement rides and be responsible for young children’s lives. One of the most stressful times of my life. I did not think I was mature enough.
My first job, aside from babysitting here and there, was as a cashier at a local, family-owned deli. I worked there the summer after my freshman year of college, and subsequent holidays after. I still go visit today (4+ years later!) to say hi to the owner!

my first job was at a waitress at nice restaurant. I still work there during the summer 8 years later!
My first job was as a bagger at a commissary in England where we were stationed. You bag all day, help people to their car, get tips. Then at the end of the day, all the baggers split the tips. I don’t know if they still do the tips that way, or if its every bagger for themselves!
I’d LOVE a case of Chobani; I can rarely afford to buy it but I love that stuff!!
My first job was at TCBY! Awesome job and I ate way too much free fro-yo!!
Awesome. A little internet embarassment is totally worth a case of Chobani. My first real job was while I was in college and I worked at Sea World in Orlando. I worked in the entertainment department as a “Sea Maid”. Sea Maids did show announcing, spoke to guests throughout the park, did animal feeding demonstrations etc. All of that was fun but the best part of the job was getting to do the Pearl Diving shows. I was a Japanese Pearl Diver. We wore white bathing suits covered up with a white wrap skirt, long sleeved top and head covering. Every half hour we recreated the ancient art of pearl diving in front of hundreds of guests. After the show guests could buy a ticket to have us dive for an oyster of their choosing, all guaranteed to contain a genuine pearl. It was the perfect summer job in Florida. When I had to prepare a resume for a project my senior year of college, I proudly put that down as my work experience. I still remember my professor looking at me over her half glasses as she read it and not even trying to hide her laughter. Even now, more than twenty years later, it occasionally comes up in conversation. Talk about your perfect ice-breaker.
My first job was as a barista in a local coffeeshop. The owners also ran a Hawaiian shirt shop so our “uniforms” were made from the leftover Hawaiian shirt print. UGLY!

I am huuuuge proponent of traveler’s insurance. It’s hard to justify shelling out the dinero for something that you might not need, but it’s SO worth it.
For my sixteenth birthday, my dad booked a trip to the Bahamas for me and six of my girlfriends. This was around all of the post-9/11 red alert craze. And, as things got worse, friends kept backing out of the trip because no one’s parents wanted them flying. Truthfully, my dad didn’t want to fly either. Luckily, he’d bought traveler’s insurance… but imagine how much he’d have lost if he hadn’t!
I think you’re making the responsible decision–and I hope your grandfather gets well!
My first job was at a toddler’s wading pool at our local community center. It was fun, but I never even got a tan!
I was 16 & got a job at Chuck E’ Cheese’s. It was fun until they made me get into the big mouse costume!

My favorite is vanilla ice cream, the fudge from their ice cream cakes, along with the chocolate crunch in the cake, topped with whipped cream…no wonder I put on about 10 pounds! It was so gooood though!

Great tips also – thanks!
My first job was working on my grandparents’ Christmas tree farm! I’m pretty sure I’m one of only like 10 people my age who can firmly tell you the difference between a scotch pine and a douglas fir. Grandma and Grandpa would stock up on Arby’s 5-for-5 sandwiches during the summer and freeze them, and then all of us got to eat those during “lunch breaks.” My grandparents now rent out that land, but it was definitely the best job ever…Although, I am kinda jealous of Cindy’s $200 bonuses! First time commenter here….the lure of a case of Chobani has forced me out of my quiet blog-stalking. My first job was the best thing ever for a lazy teenager. It was actually pretty sweet! Especially once I realized you could moisten the envelopes with a sponge instead of licking every one and risking paper cuts!

As someone that has worked in insurance for the past 4+ years I’ve seen so many instances where had the customer bought this kind of coverage or that kind they would not have problems to deal with. You’ll always need the insurance when you don’t have it..but when you do have it..you’ll never need it (in a lot cases!!). Great move for you and the husband!

When I was 14 I wanted to start working for my uncles at an ice cream shop on the boardwalk. I quit after two days….because the second day, one of MY customers got angry at me, had a cursing screaming fight with the girl i was working with, threw the ice cream in her face, and my coworker got arrested. The registers didn’t work for the rest of the night so I was going to next store just to get money for my line of other customers. LOL. I wanted to die.

The hours were convenient, it was close to home, and the pay was good for a 14-year-old. But, man, did I hate many aspects of that job!
My first job was doing data entry for a national temp agency. Part of my job involved entering information about the employees working in different states who had criminal records. It definitely made an otherwise dull summer job fun!

My first job was working at a well-known local bakery. I was 14, going into high school and needed some cash, so my uncle hooked me up with this job. IT SUCKED. I had to sip strawberries in chocolate and slice strawberries all day. I only worked weekends but dreaded every second of it. One time I spilled a bowl of melted chocolate down the front of my shirt, pants and head. I was trying to put it back up in the warmer. It was horrible.

It was a fun job, but incredibly hard and time consuming. I started down that full time career path not long ago before realizing I want it was a hobby, not a life! It only took 8 years to figure that out (I’m 21)!

Well, I, too, worked at a grocery store. But I was not so lucky as to start as a cashier. I had to be a bagger first. Which is fine… except baggers do A LOT more than bag. I had to clean bathrooms (ick!) and I was the only girl bagger during my time so I ALWAYS had to clean on my shifts. I also got to clean up spills and of course… push carts!
However, pushing carts was only so cool because the area where the store was is sorta really shady. So I always got sent out with “body guards” ie. boy baggers or if it was dark out, the store’s security guys. I once got approached by a freaky dude and I proceeded to BOOK it inside. And from that moment on, no girl was allowed outside after dark and we had to be escorted to our cars.

Caught too many times painting my own creations ( we were only allowed to do that off the clock, but it was always so slow!)! I loved it because it was mainly geared towards kids so I got to basically paint and babysit, as well as hear a lot of funny things from the kids, my favorite being this gem:
Girl#1: I’m God! I’m God! I’m Gooooooooood!
Girl #2: (annoyed) I’m going to hit you with this ceramic pumpkin!!!
Girl#1: You can’t kill God with a ceramic pumpkin!

My first job was as a hostess of a Chinese restaurant. It was in a touristy area of town. When a customer entered from the front door with a quizzical look on their face, before they said anything, I’d say, “No, we don’t have a buffet.” When a customer came to me from the inside of the restaurant with a quizzical look on their face, before they said anything, I’d say, “The bathroom is behind you towards the right.” 10 out of 10 times I had the right answer to their unspoken question

But I also had to be cashier, help women find breast milk pumps and clean up scattered boxes of candy land. The worst was on Geoffrey the Giraffe’s birthday, in October. I had to fill in one shift and be Geoffrey. Every hour on the hour, I had to lead a march of children and employees in a circle around the store while they played toy instruments, and the loudspeaker played happy birthday. Also, small children pulled on my tail all day. It was worth it though, I guess, because I earned enough to buy my first car.
