Eleven with the Ladies

Happy Sunday! :)

Last night, my late “linner” kept me pretty full until bedtime.  I snacked on a slice of whole wheat toast with Barney Butter and a banana-less Green Monster (just spinach, milk, and ice) around 9.

I went to bed EARLY because the girls and I were meeting up for an 11.0-mile training run in the morning!

Today, I tried something different in terms of fueling.  Instead of eating more calories on my run, I decided to have a higher-calorie pre-run breakfast.  I woke up at 5:15 to be sure I had enough time to digest:

IMG_1450

This is what I typically eat on a race day: banana oatmeal with nuts and brown sugar (and a coffee!).    Delish!

IMG_1452

I met the girls at a new running location.  I was pretty excited to run 11.0 miles, but even more excited for new scenery!

Eleven miles is the most any of us have run for MONTHS!

Kelly, Megan, Debbie, me. (FYI I forgot sunscreen on my legs and now I have a super hot knee sleeve tan.)

Pre-run stretching/silliness… we were all suppose to be making “funny faces” — how come I’m the only one that did!?!

It was a great run.  It’s nice to do long runs with friends.  I like to just zone out on my shorter weekday runs with my iPod, but when I’m running for nearly two hours, it’s better to chitchat about boys, work, and life.

I took a shot of goo around mile 6.0:

Clif Shots have officially won my heart over Hammer gels. I think I like them more because they are organic — the flavors are similar and the texture is the same.

And I think the bigger breakfast was a good idea, especially because there was downtime in between eating and running.  I couldn’t really do that if I was leaving from my own house for a long run, but it worked today!

Here are my statistics:

  • Duration:  1 hour, 53  minutes, 22 seconds
  • Distance: 11.01 miles
  • Mile 1: 10:25
  • Mile 2: 10:14
  • Mile 3: 10:09
  • Mile 4: 9:07
  • Mile 5: 9:11
  • Mile 6: 10:12
  • Mile 7: 10:17
  • Mile 8: 10:17
  • Mile 9: 10:45 (this felt like a real struggle)
  • Mile 10: 10:01
  • Mile 11: 10:35

Post-run cold bev:

And breakfast number two was granola, yogurt, and grapes.

I’m going back to bed….  I’m pooped.

And next week is a taper week on my schedule!  No long run… but I am doing a fun 5K race.  :)

i think thats a great idea on a higher calorie breakie before the run. What other breakfast ideas do you have for a pre long run!? I'm going to be doing my half in about 6 weeks, and i'm not sure what i should eat the morning of thats not going to be 2 filling or harsh on the stomach!?

Impressive way to start out the morning! Way to go on 11 miles, that's wonderful! How long do you typically let your breakfast digest before running? I always have troubles with timing, I either don't wait long enough and my stomach cramps up or I wait too long and find myself running out of gas during my run.

I love doing a 5K in the middle of a training plan. It's such a different feeling than a long distance run.

I really like the chocolate flavor gels. I had a Clif fruity one once and felt that the flavor stuck with me for way too long. Did you find that? I haven't had one since.

Yay congrats!! What a fabulous run :-) I always need a big breakfast before long runs because it keeps me from getting hungry during it. Works well!!

lizzy – yay for your half. i also eat a PB sammie with banana before races. i would just try experimenting with your pre-run breakfasts now so you know what works and doesnt work for you before the day of the race. #1 race rule is dont try anything new on race day!
