Play and Work

in All Posts

Today was all about play and work.  And more work.  Smile

The play part was the best part, of course!  It was our first lesson for the new season of Girls on the Run.  GOTR is an after-school program for third to fifth grade girls that encourages character development through running.  Our team consists of 15 girls, and we meet twice a week for ten weeks.  At the end of season, we run (or walk or shimmy-shake or skip) a community-wide 5K with about 3,000 other local participants.

The Husband and I love coaching.  We actually have twelve returning girls this season, some from the fall and some from last year.  It was fun to see everyone’s face again.

We have two co-coaches this year, too!  Our Charlotte friends Catherine and Katy are joining the team.

The work parts of the day consisted of writing (yay!), bookkeeping (boo!), and cleaning the house for MomHTP’s arrival.  I don’t do intense ‘special’ cleans for anyone but my mom – I like to keep a (relatively) tidy house anyway.  But MomHTP has this crazy ability to spot dust from 10 feet away.  She never says anything to me, but I spot her discreetly wiping it down later.  I love it; it always makes me laugh.  But I do try to stay one step ahead of her when she comes for a visit!

Dear Cleaning Fairies, why haven’t you come to my house yet?  I’m waaaaiting for you.

Eats, Eats, Eats

Dinner was a yummy mix of brown rice, steamed kale, baked tofu, and corn salsa.

An apple for a snack…

And ice cream as my post-mopping reward.  Bribery works.

And now, I’m surveying my clean house and munching on toast.  Life is good.

What were the best work and play parts of your day?

    • CaitlinHTP February 24, 2012, 12:17 pm

  • Katie @ Peace Love & Oats February 23, 2012, 9:29 pm

Hahaha I’d clean if I got ice cream afterwards! I actually did clean a bit today, my kitchen counters and my bathroom. I HATE cleaning the bathroom.

  • Emily @ The Swallow Flies February 23, 2012, 9:30 pm

Best work: I love almost every minute of my “job” working with 14-year-olds. Best play: I spent the evening with friends from my non-profit agency. Great day!

  • Kelley February 23, 2012, 9:30 pm

Have fun with your mom! Your bump is so cute!

  • Katie February 23, 2012, 9:30 pm

I giggled when I saw a photo of you barefoot, pregnant, in the kitchen.

    🙂

    Love it

    • Clare February 23, 2012, 9:58 pm

I was going to say that too! Hilarious 🙂

      • CaitlinHTP February 24, 2012, 12:18 pm

LOL i didnt even realize how funny that pic was until you said that.

  • Catalina @ Cake with Love February 23, 2012, 9:31 pm

I didn’t really play a lot, I had a lot of meetings today, but if reading blogs and commenting counts as playing during work then I can say that I played a little bit! You look really good in green! My mom is very neat and clean, so I inherited from her to clean always my house, she can also spot dust from 10feet away! I like how you incorporate kale in your eats, I should do it more often! Have a nice evening!

  • Megan February 23, 2012, 9:33 pm

When you steam your kale, how do you steam it? I love, love, love kale – but I always just saute or bake (kale chips) it. I need to switch it up.

  • Christine @ BookishlyB February 23, 2012, 9:33 pm

Best work- powering through a yearbook “crisis” with my students (I’m the adviser).

Best Home- Probably the ice cream I ate when I got home. Either that or changing into sweats.

    I sound pathetic 🙂

    • CaitlinHTP February 24, 2012, 12:19 pm

      Or awesome!

  • Jen February 23, 2012, 9:35 pm
    • CaitlinHTP February 24, 2012, 12:20 pm

I LOVE IT. I want to eat that.

  • Marissa C February 23, 2012, 9:37 pm

    Such a cute pregnant lady!

  • Sana February 23, 2012, 9:38 pm

    Hahah I <3 your mom.

  • Ashley February 23, 2012, 9:46 pm

Today I worked until 5- then had a networking event that was WAY more like play. 🙂

  • CheezyK February 23, 2012, 10:01 pm

Best work = finally knocking some overdue things off the ‘to do’ list.
Best play = in three hours it’s home time and it’s Friday(finally !!), so best play is still to come.

  • Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) February 23, 2012, 10:08 pm

My best part of work was coaching people. The best part of home was watching a movie with my guys! Oh and could you send the cleaning fairies this way when you see them? They have been missing a lot of work here!

  • Caroline February 23, 2012, 10:20 pm

I clean up before my Mom arrives too 🙂

  • Emily February 23, 2012, 10:34 pm

I have to say, I felt glorious when I finally finished outlining the history chapter I was studying today – it’s such a tedious task, and I normally count down the pages, but the time seemed to fly by today! Perhaps the fact that I was sitting out on the porch on a 75º day had something to do with it. 🙂
As for play, I had two lovely successes in the kitchen today – Jessica of How Sweet’s Banana Bread Cake and Everything Fontina Biscuits. I’m trying to use up the last of my dairy products and eggs before Lent (I’m Russian Orthodox Christian, and we basically go vegan for Lent!), and both recipes were fantastic ways to do so.

GotR looks like SO much fun. I actually looked into volunteering this season, but unfortunately, the practices at my local elementary school don’t fit in with my schedule. I’d love to make it happen someday though – it seems like it would be so rewarding.

    • Kelli February 24, 2012, 11:51 am

I thought Lent started on Wednesday. Do different denominations begin their observation on different dates? Also, what is the reason that Russian Orthadox members go vegan for Lent? Not trying to be critical, but I am very curious & interested. I live in an area where there aren’t many Russian Orthadox churches (if any) so I’m completely unfamiliar.
Enjoy your treats before you begin Lent!

    • CaitlinHTP February 24, 2012, 12:20 pm

How Sweet has the best recipes!

  • Alex @ Raw Recovery February 23, 2012, 11:03 pm

Best work parts was getting a few more pages done on my thesis and attending a lecture about materialism in contemporary Chinese art. My best play parts of the day were letting myself sleep in, making a delicious smoothie in my vitamix, going to yoga, and writing my 100th blog post.

I don’t clean for anyone except my mom either…and sometimes I don’t even clean for her…woops. She likes cleaning so I don’t deprive her of that joy when she visits 🙂

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) February 23, 2012, 11:08 pm

    my mum is the same!!!

  • Kristin February 23, 2012, 11:37 pm

My mom is the same way! Last time she visited, she bleached my coffee pot!

  • Jen February 24, 2012, 12:01 am

If the cleaning fairies ever do show up, can you PLEASE send them to my place next? 🙂

Hope you have a wonderful time with your Mommy! I’ll bet she is getting SOOO excited about Baby HTP!!!

  • Sophie @ threetimesf February 24, 2012, 2:47 am

So excited to read about GOTR again!

  • Kim February 24, 2012, 6:38 am

Nothing shows daughterly love more than dusting. My mom is the only one I’ll dust for, ha.

  • Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon February 24, 2012, 7:34 am

Can’t wait to see what this season of Girls on the Run brings!! It sounds like such a great program–I definitely want to try to get involved after I graduate this spring!!

  • Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed February 24, 2012, 8:02 am

Yesterday I got to go on my first run with my new Garmin!!!! So that was fun… but my run kicked my butt, so it was also work haha.

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin February 24, 2012, 8:09 am

My mom is the same way!!! The second she walks into the house, she notices if something is dirty or out of place… it’s freaky!

  • allpointswhole February 24, 2012, 8:50 am

Love your belly…and Girls on the Run…

  • JennB@BeMe February 24, 2012, 8:52 am

My best work parts were learning new recovery based models for therapy and my best play part was watching old episodes of Felicity on Netflix and eating Raisinets!

  • CJ @ http://healthy-happy-whole.com February 24, 2012, 9:24 am

I have to clean for my mom too. ANy sort of clutter or dust and she thinks the house is falling to pieces. it is actually pretty darn stressful if you ask me! hope you enjoy your time with her 🙂

  • Kaitlyn February 24, 2012, 10:05 am

I made it on the treadmill for a consistant 6 miles at a mid tempo pace of 9.0 mph. This is unheard of for me because I can only do speed workouts on the treadmill because I get so bored. And I had a lovely talk with my advisor and I hit the books/computer for a huge much needed thesis writing sesh.

    • CaitlinHTP February 24, 2012, 12:21 pm

That is awesome, girl. Way to go!

  • Ashley February 24, 2012, 10:27 am

That baby bump is so cute!

  • Ashley O. @ The Vegetable Life February 24, 2012, 10:54 am

Oh my goodness, you bribe yourself to get chores done too?! Haha it works (almost) everytime for me! Last night I got ice cream if I emptied the dishwasher and folded a load of laundry… you bet your butt that I got that ice cream 🙂

  • Kelli February 24, 2012, 11:42 am

I am pregnant & have a bad cold so the drag part of my day was feeling like I couldn’t breathe (can’t take any effective cold meds…& didn’t use the netti pot yesterday morning even though I knew it would catch up to me!)The best part was meeting a dear friend for dinner & catching alllll up! It was a wonderful ending to my day.

    • CaitlinHTP February 24, 2012, 12:24 pm

Aw I hope you feel better. Having a cold while preggers is the worst.

  • Emily February 24, 2012, 11:56 am

I love that about MomHTP. My mum is the same. If anyone else attempted to clean in my house I’d be offended, but she’s allowed.

  • faith February 24, 2012, 12:31 pm

Man, what I would give to catch my mom cleaning my house! Let’s just say I am cleaner than she is. 😉

  • Amber K February 24, 2012, 2:42 pm

Work : Paying bills, no fun.

But play will come tonight : dancing!

  • Katie @ Talk Less, Say More February 24, 2012, 11:06 pm

I’d mop for a bowl of ice cream!! 😉

  • Eliza February 28, 2012, 5:43 pm

Your mum sounds awesome and funny 🙂 A few weeks ago I was house sitting for a friend and my mum came over to visit and when I was making coffee, she got a broom and started sweeping the lady’s front yard. I found this strange haha.

I love your bump, how cute
