Spices Inc Giveaway

in All Posts

This is embarrassing to admit, but the cinnamon in my pantry is approximately 3 years old.  I know this because it’s an off-brand from the grocery store next to my old job in Pittsburgh.  So when Spices Inc offered to send me some new spices, I jumped at the chance.

IMG_6173

I received Chill Country Chili Powder, Nutmeg Powder, Organic Saigon Cinnamon, and Madras Curry.

I love cooking with spices, but cinnamon is definitely my favorite spice.  Combined with brown sugar, it’s a perfect oatmeal topper!

IMG_6181

Nom, nom, nom.

IMG_6182

My oatmeal contained:

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup vanilla almond breeze
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 sliced banana
  • Toppings: Organic Saigon Cinnamon, brown sugar, and almonds

IMG_6184

I could DEFINITELY taste the difference in the new Organic Saigon Cinnamon compared to my old cinnamon.  It was so rich and flavorful.  I want to eat it by the spoonful!

You can win a spice set from Spice Inc, too!  To enter, simply comment with your favorite spice and why.  I’ll select the winner on Wednesday morning.

It’s a rainy, dreary day in Florida.  Hopefully the weather will clear up at quitting time so I can go on a bike ride!  Time to get my work done.

I actually first heard of using nutmeg in cream dishes when I had fettucine alfredo at Hemingway’s in Pittsburgh (I went to Pitt for one year-my first year-of college!!! I lived in Holland Hall in a QUAD (yep, 4 people, one big room) and it definitely had it’s moments, but overall it was such a fun time!!!). Anyways, all my spices are “old-ish” too so new, fresh ones would be SO AWESOME!!! 🙂

I just learned last night the difference between a herb and a spice! A herb is a plant that is valued for it’s scent or flavor and used with food. A spice is a seed, dried fruit, bark or another part of plant that is used with food. So technically, half of the “spices” sold by Spice Inc are actually herbs! My favorite “spice” has to be Dill though, closely followed by Rosemary. I also love cinnamon too! I eat it in my oatmeal every morning!

  • Kirsten January 25, 2010, 9:41 am

cinnamon is my favorite because it can go on so many things. I like it on apples the best.

  • Heather January 25, 2010, 11:11 am

I’m torn between cinnamon and cumin. Both are warming spices and cinnamon is more versatile as it can be used in sweet AND savory, but cumin smells so good and makes me think of Indian and Mexican food = my favorites!

(Sidenote: it’s good that they do organic cinnamon! That’s the one spice I’ve been buying organic because I read about bugs being in the cinnamon sticks when they get ground up, and now I get all grossed out! Luckily, Whole Foods brand is pretty cheap.)

  • Lauren @ Eater not a runner January 25, 2010, 11:12 am

I agree with cinnamon, makes every breakfast better!

  • Guen January 25, 2010, 11:12 am

In my house we use garlic powder like a regular condiment. Even if something may already have fresh chopped garlic in it, we may still throw on a dash of garlic powder. It goes on pizza, in soup, on pasta, in sauces…just about anything where it wouldn’t be gross. We go through it faster than the salt shaker.

  • Megan January 25, 2010, 11:12 am

I love spicy things so throwing in a dash of cayenne pepper is always good! Currently loving sea salt too – especially on edamame-nom! Great giveaway-who can’t uses spices?!

Definitely cinnamon. I swear I go through the equivalent of a jar a week!

  • Jessica Lee January 25, 2010, 11:25 am

My favorite spice is VANILLA. Not a lot of people use “vanilla” as a spice but I LOVE it. I always top off my coffee at Starbucks with it, I put it in cereals, on bread, oats, etc.

My favorite savory spice is probably paprika. It adds a nice kick and you can PUT IT ON ANYTHING: fish, veggies, chicken, soups…seriously EVERYTHING! Smoked paprika is even better, gives it a nice BBQ smokiness flavor.

  • Bec January 25, 2010, 11:25 am

Cinnamon and curry are my favorite for sure but not together obviously!

  • janetha January 25, 2010, 11:26 am

Recently I’ve been LOVING Herbs de Provence. I’ve been roasting a lot because of the winter months and they taste good on everything from meats (pork, chicken, fish) to veggies (potatoes, squashes, broccoli!) and I love to add it to homemade or canned soups. I even mixed some in my tuna salad the other day. And it may be more than one spice, but its the combined flavors from being jarred together that make them delicious 🙂

  • Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) January 25, 2010, 11:38 am

There’s a store next door to my gym that ONLY sells spices. And, yet, I buy mine at the grocery store and some of them are years old. I don’t know if I could pick a favorite, though! I use a lot of cumin and a lot of rosemary…but not at the same time!

Lately my favorite spice has been thyme…I love adding it to soups and other savory dishes!

  • Melissa January 25, 2010, 12:00 pm

Cinnamon is my favorite too! I used to think it was kind of a treat, and then I read an article a few years ago about how cinnamon gets a bad rap due to its association with sugar. Now that I know about its health benefits I use it in everything! I’ve been doing a lot of reading about its benefits for arthritis, as I was diagnosed at 23, and will probably have to go off my medication soon since I’m hoping to get pregnant. Hoping cinnamon will help do the trick for at least 9 months!

  • Jesse January 25, 2010, 12:01 pm

I have only recently become a spice connoisseur but oh man, they can really just make a regular old dish divine. For staples: salt pepper crushed red pepper cumin and cinnamon.

But the best one ever is this black lava sea salt I bought in Sarasota! It literally melts in your mouth.

  • Bridget January 25, 2010, 12:01 pm

So not that you will, but please DON’T eat the cinnamon buy the spoonful 🙂 I’ve seen a youtube vidoe of that and it’s NOT fun.

Chili is also a great way to replace salt, as it has a strong taste. If you don’t overdo it, it will make everything taste better. • Meaghen January 25, 2010, 2:39 pm

My favourite spice is proabbly cinnamon, but I’m kind of picky about the foods I use it in. When I use it though, I douse the food in it!
