Breaks

in All Posts

It’s been a normal work day for me…. writing, writing, writing.  I took a break to snack on Barney Butter and celery:

And another break to stare at the pretty flowers on my desk (which I bought myself…. yay!):

IMG_1521

And another break to inspect my feet, which are definitely starting to show all the right signs of marathon training… blisters, calluses, and chipped nail polish (wahoo!!):

And one final break to save a toy from being murdered by James:

Death by destuffing!

Lunch was fabulous:

I love Nasoya Extra Firm Tofu, which I baked after marinating in maple syrup, virgin olive oil, and pepper.  With brown rice and snowpeas on the side:

The Husband is STILL asleep at 1:00 PM.  He got home so late last night (well, actually this morning…at 5:45 AM) so I’m not surprised that he’s still snoozing.  I want him to wake up so I can broach the idea of a FUN VACATION.  I need to get out of town!

When’s the last time you went on a vacation and where did you go?

  • Jenna September 8, 2009, 10:18 am

i went to cape cod with the family!

  • Whitney@whitsgettingfit September 8, 2009, 10:18 am

Lame, but due to new work situations, my last vacay was to Boston for the summit. I am going camping+biking with the fam in a few weeks, so FUN times will be had by all on that trip.

  • jodie September 8, 2009, 10:19 am

The last vacay we went to Jamaica, fabulous and fun.

Can't wait to hear about yours.

  • Beth September 8, 2009, 10:21 am

My husband and I just got back a week or so ago from 10 days in Germany and Austria – tons of outdoor activities such as hiking and biking! Vacation is THE BEST!!

  • Juli D September 8, 2009, 10:24 am

We recently returned from a fabulous trip to Yosemite and San Francisco. A week in the Yosemite backcountry with 60 miles hiked followed by 4 days in San Francisco relaxing and being tourists. And visiting another MLB stadium and watching our home team (Tigers) beat the Oakland A's!

  • tashintraining September 8, 2009, 10:29 am

I just got back from vacation about 2 weeks ago. I spent 2 months exploring Europe with my husband. London, Paris, Madrid, barcelona, Nice, Monaco, Venice, Florence, Rome, Athens and Santorini!

  • Beth September 8, 2009, 10:30 am

Most recently, a weekend in wine country. But a few months ago, a big vacay to Kauai…heaven on earth!!

  • Britt September 8, 2009, 10:30 am

Vacations are my fav, I think I annoy my hubby with all the vacations I plan. 🙂

We did a mini-vacation to the Berkshires of MA a weekend ago. Our main summer vacation was Cape Cod in July with my in-laws (but I like them so it was good)

  • platipus329 September 8, 2009, 10:31 am

I went to Georgia in August and it was a blast. I miss those 100 degree days!

  • Priyanka September 8, 2009, 10:32 am

I went on a vacation not too long ago, this August to Maui!!!!

  • Rose September 8, 2009, 10:34 am

I feel like every weekend lately has been a vacation in some form or another. But I'd say the last "real vacation" was to Charlottesville about a year ago.

  • Jenna September 8, 2009, 10:38 am

I need to book a vacation too. We are hoping to go somewhere tropical in the spring!

I just got back from TX (mom's house), but I don't consider that a vacation I guess. But we went to Washington DC in May. That was AWESOME!

You deserve a long and wonderful vaca!

  • brandi September 8, 2009, 10:44 am

that picture of james is too cute!

last real vacation? to the beach last summer, probably. I had a blast in Honduras, but wouldn't really call it a vacation.

  • Megan @ Megzz Wins At Life September 8, 2009, 10:46 am

I need a vacation soo bad!! I am hoping to go away with my boy in November!

  • Sara September 8, 2009, 10:47 am

Boston, for the Healthy Living Summit… if that counts. Before that: Jacksonville, FL. Full review of it in one of my blog posts! Truly beautiful place.

  • BethAnn Caputo September 8, 2009, 10:50 am

I went a few places this summer…Vegas for a long weekend…they have some pretty awesome deals on flights right now and the hotel we stayed at (luxor) was 49 dollars a night..if you can stay during the week the deals are ridiculous. I had SO much fun…we really, really didn't pay for much because there are a lot of cheap places to eat and your drinks are free if you're gambling. I'm actually going again in November! So. Fun. If you can get there really, really go. I go to school on the East Coast so I took a trip to DC Gettysburg and Baltimore Inner Harbor…which was also really fun…and we also did Mystic, CT. Which was a beautiful seaport. My boyfriend and I are huge into traveling so we always try to spend our money on little trips here and there. Since you live in florida you can prob. get some amazing last minute cruise deals too. There are some fantastic prices for the bahamas and such and you could drive to the port. Good luck planning!

  • cookinfanatic September 8, 2009, 10:52 am

On a 3 night Bahamas cruise out of Orlando just 2 weekends ago w/ my boyfriend for our 1 year anniversary 🙂 So fun!!!

  • recipesforcreativity September 8, 2009, 11:00 am

I'm going on vacation TOMORROW! To the beach and Charleston, yay! I usually take a few shortish trips a year, plus a longer one, because I LOVE to see new places! The year I went to the Keys, California, The Hamptons, for a fun day in a water park over in Tennessee (Dollywood Splash Country, you should have gone when you visited your mom!), and I guess that's it! I love to get out of the house:) Good luck waking up the hubby.

  • Kate September 8, 2009, 11:09 am

Oooh that tofu looks perfectly cooked. Mine always turns out mushy. Do you freeze it first? That's my next technique to try.

We just took a long weekend trip to Blue Hill, Maine (ohmigod gorgeous sunsets!), but it was with a friend's family so it wasn't exactly a relaxing or romantic time. Vacations with "just the two of you" are SO important!

  • Mellissa September 8, 2009, 11:09 am

Last vacation was to Italy in June for our wedding/honeymoon. The next trip is planned for Thanksgiving- just not sure where yet.

I highly recommend going on multiple trips a year, even if they are small. It really helps me to have something on the calendar to look forward to.

  • Nicci@NiftyEats September 8, 2009, 11:09 am

A fun vacay sounds great. I just discussed the idea of taking a cruise with my boyfriend the other day. My last vacation was a road trip from TX to AZ to see our Texas Rangers play, during their Spring Training, it was an awesome week!

  • Thinspired September 8, 2009, 11:17 am

Hell yes for buying yourself flowers. That is awesome, lady.

  • Sarah September 8, 2009, 11:37 am

I seriously need to get that cubed tofu! Is it already pressed and everything?

  • Tiffany September 8, 2009, 11:39 am

My last vacation, although great, was too short. The boyfriend and I drove from Northern Arizona to Crested Butte Colorado. It was breathtakingly beautiful. Three days simply was not enough.

  • Gina September 8, 2009, 11:41 am

I think the last time I slept until 1PM was when we were jet lagged from Hawaii two years ago.
Last year we went on a cruise around the Mexican Riviera during October. It was nice to get away from the colder weather.

  • K from ksgoodeats September 8, 2009, 11:41 am

Those flowers are gorgeous!! Kudos to you for buying them for yourself – who needs a man to that?! That is how every single dog toy is 5 minutes after we bring them home. If there's a squeaker in it, it has a lifespan of about 3 minutes!

  • Julia September 8, 2009, 11:45 am

its been wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too long since a vacation. 2.5 years ago I went to Vegas. Someone come and whisk me away!!! 🙂

  • Taylor September 8, 2009, 11:53 am

I love buying myself flowers!! They're an expensive treat, but always make me smile 🙂

And you rock those marathon feet! I was always proud of my runner's feet 😉

I've been on a bunch of short mini-vacays this summer (like 2-3 days little trips). But before that, the first BIG vacation I went on was probably 2 summers ago to Europe with my sister and my grandparents. Such an awesome experience.

  • Exa September 8, 2009, 11:58 am

My dog Holland always does that to toys–but then again, he's 115 pounds!
My last real vacation was in June. I went to Turkey with my boyfriend and my family for my cousin's wedding. It was an amazing cultural, intellectual, and foodie experience!

  • Sheri September 8, 2009, 12:02 pm

Actually it was this long weekend. We went for 3 days to the mountains in Fernie B.C. The weather was not spectacular but we spent it together as a family and it was fun just to hangout together.

But I still have to fun trips planned for the Fall and I cannot wait!

  • Marisa (Trim The Fat) September 8, 2009, 12:07 pm

Yay for vacation!! I haven't been anywhere exotic lately, just mainly the Jersey shore – we're big beach bums! But, one of my fave place is Bermuda and it'a a quick flight, too!

  • shawna September 8, 2009, 12:22 pm

We just went to Provincetown, MA a few weeks back. Had the most beautiful weather!

  • Allison September 8, 2009, 12:33 pm

I just got back from a camping trip at Kings Canyon National Park. We had a blast — it was so nice to get out of town for the long weekend.

  • SuperDots September 8, 2009, 12:35 pm

My last vacation was in Gulf Shores, AL

This Thanksgiving I'm going to Florida-yay!

  • Beth @ CrossBorderCravings September 8, 2009, 12:45 pm

My last vacation was to England for my cousin's wedding and it was FABULOUS. Nothing can beat total relaxation and family time :O). Hope you guys plan something fun soon!

  • traveleatlove September 8, 2009, 1:03 pm

We got home from San Francisco and wine country this morning at 7:45. . . so tired! I am already looking forward to our next vacation though!

  • stefe1202 September 8, 2009, 1:33 pm

Your puppy is so cute. Mine did the same to his favorite so I had to play doctor and sew it back up. Last vacation I had was to Aruba in April for our honeymoon and it was great!

  • Caroilne September 8, 2009, 2:02 pm

My last BIG vacation was St. John with my boyfriend. We camped by the beach and it was unbelievably gorgeous. I would recommend it to anyone that wants a cheap beach vacation but you have to be cool with staying in a tent. At least they provide all the camping gear!

  • angieinatlanta September 8, 2009, 2:20 pm

Aw, I love that you buy yourself flowers; I think it's such an empowering statement of self-love!

My last big vacation was last spring. My BF and I went to Cabo and lived it up, Mexico-style, and I loved every minute!

  • Sam September 8, 2009, 2:21 pm

Living on a tropical island is somewhat of a vacation. 🙂 The husband's last vacation was without me, their boat ported in Singapore and in South Korea. Our last trip together was 2 1/2 weeks in Europe in 08 (Germany, Switzerland, Italy). We hope to go with our kids to Yap for Christmas for a diving vacation.

  • Lindsay September 8, 2009, 2:25 pm

The last *trip* I took was a huge wedding weekend shacked up in a cute hotel with a bunch of friends. The last *vacation* I took was over two years ago when Hubby took me to Grand Cayman to propose…one day we'll do our honeymoon!

  • Jenn Eats Nutritiously Now September 8, 2009, 3:16 pm

That is so funny that you buy yourself flowers. I wish someone would send me some lol!

  • Liz @ in the skinny September 8, 2009, 3:25 pm

I like your marathon feet! I finally felt like a true marathoner when my pinkie toenail fell off. Can we say BAD shoes?

  • Jessica September 8, 2009, 3:32 pm

This summer was spent traveling to weddings, weddings, and more weddings! It's been ages since we've spent time alone together on a weekend. We work in politics, and we're gearing up for the November elections so there's no vacation in sight! We do have a very fun Florida vacation planned for after the election though 🙂

i just went to vegas! definitely, go on a vaca. its the best, no matter where you go.

  • Jolene - EverydayFoodie September 8, 2009, 4:37 pm

I took my husband to Vegas for our 5 year anniversary in July!! I completely surprised him with the trip, and only told him the week before we were leaving!

  • Jess September 8, 2009, 5:53 pm

Going to Orlando or WPB to see my besties are my only "away trips" right now. The last real vacation I went on was June of 2008 right after I graduated college when a 4 of my best gf's and I plus one fabulous puppy packed a station wagon to the brim and stayed in an amazing mountain home in N.C. Seriously one of my favorite trips and I still talk about it like it happened last week!

  • Mom September 8, 2009, 5:56 pm

You have motivated me to the point that my daily fast walking has lead me to say YES to a 9 hour round trip hike up the highest mountain in the Eastern USA!! I'm scared to death. Check out Mt. Laconte TN online. WOW what a view – and the cabins are so 1800 – no electricity no showers.
At least we get to sleep off some of the pain before going down. Prayers will be accepted.

  • Lizzy September 8, 2009, 6:45 pm

    pretty flowers!

I haven't had the opportunity to vaca at all lately, so hopefully you get out and so do i! What are your plans in mind?

  • Angie (Losing It and Loving It) September 8, 2009, 8:05 pm

Pretty flowers and yummy looking meal. I wish I could make my tofu look like that. Mine always gets so chewy. How long do you bake tofu?

As for vacation, our last one was Jamaica in Dec. 08 and we are heading back for the 3rd time in a row this Dec. Only 3 months to go, I can't wait! We stay at Couples Swept Away (Couples.com), an all-inclusive resort. All couples should experience this place. AMAZING!

  • April September 8, 2009, 8:27 pm

I did my first half marathon this summer and my feet got tore up! My poor toenails 🙁

We went to Playa del Carmen earlier this year (totally rocked) and went to Colorado this summer. Colorado rocks!

  • BroccoliHut September 8, 2009, 8:49 pm

I saw your Tweet today about having tofu baking in the oven…I knew it was going to be something good!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point September 9, 2009, 3:38 am

the tofu is not pre-pressed but its not necessary to press it because of the large surface area of the cubes (well, thats my theory).

    angie – 30 minutes at 375

  • Ali September 9, 2009, 8:15 am

The flowers are pretty! I went to Maine this past weekend, it was fun ans relaxing!
