5K Race Playlist

in All Posts

This morning, I worked on my 5K Race Playlist:

My requirement for 5K race music is that the songs have to be VERY FAST.  The first song ("Rock and Roll") is my warm-up song that I will play when I’m at the starting line.  "Decode" will kick in when the race starts.  Not counting warm-up, the entire playlist is about 25 minutes long, so I should be crossing the finish line as "Bombs Over Baghdad" concludes (hopefully).

I got really excited creating my playlist!  :)  What are your favorite running songs?

Lunch was oh-so-wholesome:

Dark red kidney beans, roasted baby yellow potatoes with EVOO and organic ketchup, and green beans.

What’s Happening in Blogland….

I am going to take a portion of what I save this month with sales and coupons and donate it to Caitlin’s  Team in Training for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I do keep my receipts, so while we are in the middle of the month, I will still be able to calculate them with those in the coming weeks. When all is said and done, I will donate a minimum of 20% of my savings to this goal!

I love making playlist before a race!! It gets me soo excited for the actual race! Good Luck tom! I am sure you will do great!!!

I think you all should tweet who passes the finish line first so we know who wins! hehe

  • Thinspired September 11, 2009, 9:27 am

Caitlin, what is your secret for roasting potatoes like that?! They look perfect. My hubs always wants roast potatoes and I can never get them crisp like that.

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point September 11, 2009, 9:30 am

Lara – I think it is the type of potato I'm using (yellow baby dutch or something like that). I can never get white potatoes to do it. I just rinse, slice, coat in EVOO and salt, and cook at 400 for about 20 minutes.

keri hilson feat lil wayne – turnin me on
    britney – circus

  • kirsten September 11, 2009, 9:34 am

I beat my goal by a minute on my last 5k in Dublin listening to Eric Prydz's Pjanoo on repeat the whole time!

  • Jenna September 11, 2009, 9:38 am

i love seeing everyone elses running playlist!
i get to hear some great new music!

  • Bricklyrknitter September 11, 2009, 9:49 am

Thanks for posting your playlist, I love getting new ideas!

My running songs tend to be more rock-ish, or have some kind of anger behind them. 🙂 Right now I have a live version of Maroon 5's "Harder to Breathe" that I love. I also love running to Queen songs!

  • Emily September 11, 2009, 9:49 am

My playlist is anything with Britney Spears..LOVE HER!!

  • Mrs. LC September 11, 2009, 9:50 am

Awesome on the vegan supplements. 🙂

I'm ashamed to admit this, being a musician and all, but I am pathetic with my playlists. I desperately need new music, esp. better workout music!!

  • Oh She Glows September 11, 2009, 9:52 am

    whohoo for vegan supplements!

  • Morgan (lifeafterbagels) September 11, 2009, 9:58 am

I really need a playlist update (I'm embarrassed to tell you that I do not know how to put songs on my ipod). Today I listened to Bif Naked during my weight training – aggressive – and perfect for pumping iron!

  • Holly September 11, 2009, 10:03 am

Aggh – Bombs Over Baghdad is probably my favorite Outkast song!! It's impossible to hear that and not want to sprint your guts out.

Of course I love Britney (who doesn't?), but I also love Kanye West, Jay-Z (Run this Town is awesome), and Coldplay. Love all kinds of music!

  • Kate September 11, 2009, 10:05 am

What a nice, simple, healthy lunch! Anything with ketchup is good in my book.

Awesome playlist, too. Maybe I'll use it when I do the Susan G. Komen 5K in a few weeks. I'm shooting for a 30 minute time, though, so I may add a song or two to your list 🙂

  • Juli D September 11, 2009, 10:06 am

Foo Fighters are by FAR the BEST band to run to. My Hero, The Pretender, Best of You, All My Life, Monkey Wrench, the list goes on and on!

  • Nicole (anotheronebitesthecrust.wordpress.com) September 11, 2009, 10:08 am

It's a really great idea to make a playlist for the race! For some reason, racing just seems so do-able when you break it up into songs like that.

I like running to Girl Talk!

  • Deva (Voracious Vorilee) September 11, 2009, 10:19 am

I love the playlist. I have certain songs on my iPod that I love to listen to when I'm running or lifting or rowing or.. well, you get the idea :-). I should really just put them all into a playlist or three!

  • Kristen September 11, 2009, 10:20 am

Bombs over Baghdad is the BEST running song! That is on my 5K playlist as well. Another great one is "Misery Business" by Paramore. Great fast track to finish out your run. Good luck!

  • Allison September 11, 2009, 10:21 am

I've gotten into downloading podcasts from indiesouprunner.com. The songs are always upbeat, and I am introduced to new artists. I still love the songs from all the 80s movies to motivate me also (think Flashdance or Breakfast Club)!

  • Laura@FindingAHealthyBalance September 11, 2009, 10:30 am

Great play list, I wish I couuld work on mine…….my computer got a nasty virus at home a month back and I haven't been able to change any songs on my iPod since! =(

  • Amanda September 11, 2009, 10:37 am

Love "Bombs over Baghdad"! So funny how diff. a 5k playlist is from a half-marathon one .. much faster!

Some of my fav running songs:
Higher Ground – Red Hot Chili Peppers
    Shake it – Metro Station
Somebody told me – The Killers
    Radio Nowhere – Bruce

    Have fun tomorrow!!

  • Lainie September 11, 2009, 10:38 am

Your potatoes look perfect! How do you do that? Mine never turn out looking that good…

I'm the same as you – I have to have FAST songs on my playlist. Yours looks great!

  • Lauren September 11, 2009, 10:46 am

Great play list. Encore/Numb is on my playlist right now too! That always gets me so pumped mid race!

I just download Flo Rider "Spin me Round" which I am loving! Such a fun and upbeat song to run to.

GOod luck tomorrow, you will totally rock!! 🙂

  • Black Kitten September 11, 2009, 10:47 am

    Good luck!!!

  • Jenna September 11, 2009, 10:50 am

I forgot about the song 'Bombs over Baghdad', what a great running song!

Britney always gets me moving when I am running 🙂

Delicious looking lunch. Oh so simple, but filling.

  • Katherine September 11, 2009, 10:52 am

Kidney beans are my favourite!!! I used to hate them in chili but I think it was because they were a poor quality kidney bean – I love the Eden's organic or soaking and cooking myself 🙂

  • skinnyrunner September 11, 2009, 10:54 am

i love to run to paramore. and lady gaga. fast songs are always easier to run to it seems

  • Matt September 11, 2009, 11:03 am

Right now I like the song "Let it Rock". It really gets me pumped up!

  • Tyler September 11, 2009, 11:06 am

I LOVE Pump It by the Black Eyed Peas and the Mortal Kombat theme song. Both get me moving!

  • brandi September 11, 2009, 11:09 am

    nice playlist!

i have an mp3 player, but I quit using it since I usually run with my husband so I've never ever made a playlist!

  • Ali September 11, 2009, 11:19 am

    Lunch looks great.

My favorite running songs are: Fighter by Christina, Shipping off to Boston by The Dropkick Murphys, and anything by Brittany!

  • Nicci@NiftyEats September 11, 2009, 11:26 am

great playlists, i need to start on one for my 5k training!

  • Tami September 11, 2009, 12:01 pm

no music for me while i run

  • Lizzy September 11, 2009, 12:04 pm

Thats so funny that you posted your playlist for your 5k this weekend, cause while i was out running this afternoon i was thinking about all the songs i need to put on my ipod for my half in october! your list looks awesome! i agree with them all having to be fast tempos!

  • Lauren September 11, 2009, 12:53 pm

It's funny you posted about music today because I just found out this morning that ipods and headphones are prohibited at my half marathon in October. I'm the type of runner who depends on her tunes to keep her chugging along, and now I'm very nervous to run. Does anyone have any suggestions as to running sans-music? Thanks!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point September 11, 2009, 12:56 pm

lauren- they have to say that for every race for insurance purposes, but no one actually enforces it. trust me. you can wear your ipod!

  • Julia September 11, 2009, 1:56 pm

I don't run with music anymore; I find it to be more calming, and helps me focus during races, but I do like to listen to Lady Gaga to get pumped up! and some flo rida 🙂

  • Every Gym's Nightmare September 11, 2009, 2:01 pm

thats so cool about your family's store!

and great playlist. i seriously need tp update my ipod

  • Courtney September 11, 2009, 2:19 pm

Wow, I usually have like 10 songs that are approx 3:30 each for a 5k!!! You are a speed machine!
Good luck at the race this weekend, can't wait for the full report!
    Adventures in Tri-ing

  • The Shabby Princess September 11, 2009, 2:27 pm

I finish my races to "Bombs Over Baghdad" too! It's a great final push. Good luck tomorrow!

  • Annamarina (Running Tails) September 11, 2009, 2:33 pm

Good thing you didn't try the Jillian Michael's workout today! I did it a few weeks ago 3 days before a 10 mile run, and I was still sore on the day of my run! She is very hardcore…although so are you so you probably would be fine 🙂 It is a great workout, so you should definitely try it sometime! Good luck in your 5K tomorrow!

  • Shannon September 11, 2009, 2:49 pm

I MUST listen to these songs whenever I run:

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger – Daft Punk
One More Time – Daft Punk (esp. toward the end!)
    Electric Feel – MGMT
    Jai Ho – Pussycat Dolls

and of course some Britney thrown in for good measure 🙂 Good luck and have FUN tomorrow!

  • Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) September 11, 2009, 3:17 pm

I love running to Imogen Heap. I don't do speedwork usually so it works for me 🙂

  • Caroline September 11, 2009, 3:47 pm

Lately I have been listening to "Run This Town" by Jay Z (feat Rihanna and Kanye) and "Knock you down" by Keri Hilson. I pretty much get pumped any time rap or hip hop comes on but there are certainly runs when I like Ingrid Michelson or Imogen Heap or even Radiohead. Good luck in your race!

  • Heather5000 September 11, 2009, 3:47 pm

Caitlin, I have almost all of those on my 5K list…. and just added the new Mary J song "The One"… the beat is perfect and goes with all of the other ones you have on your list. Also try… "Lose My Breath" by Destiny's Child… It's great for the 2.5 mile slight slow down 🙂

  • i like September 11, 2009, 4:03 pm

I swear this is my lunch today…haha, I make a pound of beans every Sunday so my bf and I have them for the week and then I pretty much pack us beans, veggies and quinoa in some mix or form for lunch every day. 🙂

  • thedallasceliac September 11, 2009, 4:07 pm

    I love Gary Glitter!

One of my favorite running songs is "Hey Ya" by Outkast.

  • Simply Life September 11, 2009, 4:39 pm

Wow, looks like a healthy and delicious lunch! My husband and I are training for a marathon right now and it's so fun to be getting closer to the actual race date!

  • Meganerd September 11, 2009, 5:46 pm

LOL Bombs over baghdad! love it!!

  • Adriane September 11, 2009, 9:10 pm

I am a total rock & roll girl, so I usually have a random mix of rock bands, although I do throw in some Outkast now and then. Good luck on your race tomorrow!

  • Courtney September 11, 2009, 9:22 pm

I love your 5k playlist! Way to prep yourself! Can't wait to hear all about it!

  • Stephanie September 12, 2009, 8:07 am

LOVE the Jay-z/Linkin Park songs!! They are great for motivation!! I think it's funny that you have Gary Glitter in your iPod…I thought I was the only one! haha

  • Stephanie September 12, 2009, 8:10 am

oh and Thinspired, it is the type of potato. Baby yellow and red potato are the best at roasting! 🙂 I do my red potatoes quartered at 450 covered with tin foil for the first 20 mins and uncovered the last 20. they come out perfect everytime.
