It’s early for me to post my lunch, but seeing as my work computer is currently engaged in anti-virus activity (I have the Vundo virus… I feel so dirty), I figured I might as well post!

Lunch was very delicious.  I’m glad I’ve rediscovered veggie burgers — so quick and so easy (I buy the MorningStar brand).

Although you can’t really tell from the ‘front’ of the wrap…

there’s a veggie burger inside!

Portion Control for the Real World

After posting about my new obsession with crushing a granola bar up in my yogurt, I thought I’d start sharing my other Portion Control for the Real World tips.  My biggest struggle on my weight loss journey was understanding portion control.  I thought portion control was only an issue if you were eating a burger, shake, and fries.  But, after a while I realized that a calorie is a calorie is a calorie, and I needed to pay attention to all my portions.

My Portion Control for the Real World tips don’t involve a scale…  I don’t know about you, but weighing food every time I want to eat something seems like a total chore.

So, here is my trick for portion controlling cheese, one of my FAVORITE foods:

CIMG3662

I buy blocks of cheese because it’s way cheaper than buying slices.  But, it’s really easy to overdo it on the cheese blocks.  Whenever I open a new block, I measure the length of the block and divide that by the number of servings.

CIMG3660

This block of cheese was 5.5 inches long and contains 8 servings.  Using a permanent marker, I mark off 0.70-inch increments on the wrapper.  Whenever I want a serving, I simply cut through the plastic wrap along the designated mark. Tada!

Now, that is portion control I can live with!

That’s a good tip! I’m all about measuring cups for portion control — I stick a half-cup scoop right in the cereal container, and then I just use that to scoop out my serving in the morning (sometimes one scoop, sometimes two, depending what else I’m eating). I also found these cool serving spoons that are conveniently also measuring cups — half and one cup. So you can scoop soup or chilli or whatever right out of the pot and know how much you’ve taken, without having to ‘eyeball’ it.

great idea for the cheese! it is so hard to judge a serving on a block of cheese.

I do that when I bake any type of bread – make a tiny slit on one side to mark the “middle” so I can actually get the servings I want out of the loaf.

that’s a great tip Caitlin, I’m always eyeballing the cheese as I’m shredding and no doubt eating more portions than I planned on.

Random Question – is there a reason you never take classes such as kickboxing or spinning? I prefer classes to working out alone and just wanted to know your (And others!) opinions. Thanks!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point April 8, 2009, 10:19 am

caitlin – i take spinning classes once every month or so. its just hard to fit it in with my work schedule. i tried kickboxing once but it wasn’t my thing. 🙂 i do love yoga class though!

By the way, love the rehearsal dinner pics. I had filet mignon at mine too – although, I’m not sure I even got a pic of it either!

  • ChickPea April 8, 2009, 9:24 pm

Great idea for portion control on the cheese!

I do something similar for pasta. As soon as I bring it home, I divide into 8 servings, so that I have pre-portioned pasta ready to boil!
