On The Road

in All Posts

Good evening!  Currently, I am writing this in the car and on the road.  We’re driving to Columbia, South Carolina and exploring the town tomorrow morning.  Then, we’re driving to Charlotte, North Carolina.

But before we hit the road, I had to finish up another hectic day of work.  My mid-afternoon snacks included Shredded Wheat drizzled with a little real maple syrup.

Plus a handful of raisins.  I was craving fruit, but we were all out of the fresh stuff!

After work, the Husband and I drove to my parents-in-law’s house and jumped in their car for the looooong drive up north.  We stopped for dinner on the way.  One principle that I live by is "do the best you can with the situation you are given."  This totally applies to eating as well!  ESPECIALLY at a fast food joint like Wendy’s!

I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich, hold the mayo:

And a 99 cent side salad with some Balsamic Vin.

And a Coke Zero, AKA Liquid Crack.

I’m 95% sure this is the first time I’ve eaten fast food since I started blogging in July 2008!  The movie Supersize Me had a serious affect on me.  If you haven’t seen it yet, rent it!

My mother-in-law packed a load of snacks for the car trip.  I ate a True Delights bar.

And three cheesy pretzel sticks, which I couldn’t get a good photo of in a dark car for the life of me!  SO… here’s a cheesy pretzel stick mustache!

:)  Back to navigating!  Stay tuned for constant recaps of our vacay!

Edited to add: It’s 2:45 AM and we just arrived! AHH!

Hope you have a great time! Looking forward to daily recaps!!

So fun! I wish you were stopping in Charleston 😉 Have fun!

    Caitlin-

So glad to hear you made it there safely! I bet that is a super long car ride!

I agree with you as well about the fast food situation and watching Super Size me. However, sometimes like you said, you do the best with what you’ve got.

I think it just goes along with the theme of everything in moderation.

Have a blast on your trip and enjoy the cooler (for you, warm for us) weather 🙂

I don’t leave a lot of comments but I love your blog and get so many wonderful ideas from it!
I am from Cola, SC! During your visit today make sure that you check out Five Points downtown–there are some cute shops and restaurants. The Gourmet Shop is recommended by a lot of people for lunches 🙂 Also–the Vista is really pretty and has a cute vibe to it. Tons of great places to eat down there. Charlotte is great, too! The downtown area is really pretty and they have so many great neighborhoods. (I live in Greensboro, NC now so I have been to Charlotte a lot)
Have fun and good luck! 🙂

I feel the same way about fast food. We hardly ever eat it but I think if I had to choose, my pick of best “healthy” and good options would be at Chic-Fil-A. It actually tastes like real food and its suprisingly quite tasty.

    Have a great trip!

A healthy food blogger finally partakes in fast food. You are my hero, Caitlin. I used to live on Wendy’s. I think it’s good every once in awhile to do just a wee bit of fast food to mix it up. Plus, you choose super healthy.

Also, what you should do next time is… Wendy’s fries, dip into frosty shake. Awesome.

That movie Supersize Me is awesome. Looks like you made the best of the situation!

gotta love the long car rides!! (and of course the necessity of liquid crack on them…) I’ve made the trek from miami to NC before!! why does florida have to be such a long state ?!

    GLAD YOU MADE IT!!

  • Mica March 19, 2009, 5:09 am

Yay, glad you arrived safely, albeit pretty late at night!

    Have a fun day today!

I agree with Lauren – Chic-fil-a is my fast-food place of choice! And their salads are great! And their waffle fries :)!

    Have fun- drive carefully!

Fast food = my favorite part of road trips. Have fun!

  • Carolina John March 19, 2009, 5:28 am

Cool! You are going to love columbia. There are plenty of healthy places to eat (and plenty of unhealthy places too). the downtown is really safe and has a hopping nightlife. Especially tonight with the basketball tournament starting.

If you were coming through Greenville instead I would love to meet up! have fun.

Have fyn girl! Yeah, Super Size Me and his book “Don’t Eat This Book” made me never want to eat fast food again. I’m going on a trip with my in-laws soon and I’ve heard Mcdonald’s stops mentioned a few times, barf! I’m going to have to pack some snacks for sure.

  • Sarah W. March 19, 2009, 5:47 am

  • Brandi March 19, 2009, 6:31 am

glad you got there safely! I can’t wait to see what you guys do on your trip 🙂

Supersize Me changed me, too – did you watch the extra called “The Smoking Fry”? Gross!

Nick and I still use the “mcgurgles and mcsweats” when we’re feeling gross 🙂

  • Rose March 19, 2009, 6:57 am

I think you did the best with that situation – good job!

  • Run Saraaah March 19, 2009, 8:41 am

That salad looks pretty decent for 99 cents, surprising for fast food!

  • Hallie March 19, 2009, 10:12 am

That inn looks so pretty! I’ve never really been to the south, other than a few trips to Florida, which isn’t the same (right? I don’t want to offend any southerners or Floridians!). My friend married a Georgia boy, and at her wedding I decided if things ever went south (harhar) with me and the BF, I was relocating to the south and finding a sweet Southern boy with an adorable accent!

  • Joy March 19, 2009, 10:18 am

totally hear you about supersize me- so gross!! but of course once in a year is not going to do anything, sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do!
