Hotel Workout

in All Posts

Good morning!  I slept for 9 hours, and I feel so rested.  I decided to wake up earlier than the Husband and my in-laws so I could squeak in a good workout before we hit the road again.

I had a small pre-workout snack — a few pretzel chips.

I was pleasantly surprised by the hotel’s gym (we’re staying at a Hyatt).  The best part was the cardio machines — there was 4 treadmills, two ellipticals, and a bike.  The treadmills were super fancy!

It was like a spaceship!  I could plug my iPod directly into the treadmill and control the playlists and volumes through the computer screen (plus, it charged my iPod, which was great because I left it on in my bag overnight — oops).  The computer screen also showed a mountain trail or a running track.  It was pretty neat!

I ran 4.0 miles and did loads of speedwork in the process.

  • Mile 0 – Mile 1: Warm-up at 6.5 mph
  • Mile 1 – Mile 2: 400 meter speed sprints alternating between 6.5 and 7.0 mph
  • Mile 2 – Mile 3: 400 meter speed sprints alternating between 7.0 and 7.5 mph
  • Mile 3 – Mile 4: Cool-down at 6.5 mph

Here are my statistics:

  • Duration: 36 minutes (4.0 miles)
  • Calories Burned: 450 (estimate)

After my treadmill workout, I came back to our room and put in the 30 Day Shred.  We have a suite so the Husband could continue to snore while I shredded away.

I packed the DVD plus my hand weights and used a hotel towel as a mat.

Level 2 of the Shred is SOOO hard.  I was sweating my butt off!  I have to admit, after my 4.0 mile run I felt really drained.  But after the Shred, I feel invigorated!

Next up, I hit up the hotel breakfast buffet.  Whenever we stay in hotels, the Husband sleeps as long as possible and I grab him a plate of breakfast to eat when he wakes up (yea, he’s spoiled).  I was juggling my plate + his plate and I dropped a ceramic bowl in front of 20 other guests! I was so embarrassed — it completely shattered and made a huge noise.

Anyway, here’s my breakfast:

An English muffin with strawberry jam and some scrambled eggs, plus a bowl of cereal.

The cereal was 1 serving of raisin bran plus 1/2 serving of Kashi Heart to Heart plus 1/8 cup of trail mix that I brought from home.

Delish!

Time to get going.  HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY!

Props to you for getting in those two great workouts!

We have those spaceship treadmills at the university gym. They’re pretty sweet/complicated!

  • Trish March 20, 2009, 7:30 am

OMG – you’re so productive! And to think that you got so much accomplished before hubby was even awake!! 🙂 YAY for getting it all done!

  • Brandi March 20, 2009, 7:37 am

sounds like a great way to start the day!

i’ve dropped stuff in hotel buffets before – why is it always so loud?

  • Run Saraaah March 20, 2009, 7:43 am

I’ve dropped stuff at buffets too…and once I fell on some stir fry that had hit the ground! I’m so clumsy. 🙂 That treadmill looks SO high tech…wow!

I am so jealous that your hotel has better treadmills than my gym.

Way to work in those workouts.

I don’t know why, but I get so excited when they have good healthy choices at hotel breakfast buffets, I guess because its free or something.

Your hotel looks so nice!! What a fancy treadmill!! MMM hotel breakfasts are the best sometimes. Love some good old scrambled eggs!

  • Rose March 20, 2009, 9:05 am

Great job on the run, girl! I’m totally impressed that you’re working it out while on vaca. So cool.

  • RunningWithin March 20, 2009, 9:08 am

That treadmill is awesome! I sadly have never had a good experience at hotel breakfast buffets, but then again I’ve never checked out the Hyatt’s breakfast buffet. I guess you get what you pay for!

Do you keep an incline on the treadmill when you run and do speedwork? I’ve read you need a 1.5% incline to simulate outside, so I typically keep it on, but my goodness, it BURNS when I do speedwork.

  • K March 20, 2009, 10:04 am

Oh no – sorry about the bowl 🙁

    Your hotel sounds so swanky!!

  • Dori March 20, 2009, 10:12 am

I have never seen such a fancy treadmill — you’d think that my insanely expensive gym would step up and get them but nope. That looks so cool, I feel like I would run a lot more if I could use one of those! It’s an experience!

Your english muffin looks delicious, I LOVE when the very edges get burned and crispy like that.

I love breakfast buffets, I definitley went to one today on campus! A big treat for an off campus girl 🙂

Delurk moment: Care to hear a funny story about the founder of LifeFitness (as in the company that made that AWESOME treadmill you took a picture of)? Well, the founder wrote a business plan for his senior thesis (undergrad) in which he discussed bringing technology and exercise together. His reader was not a fan of the idea and (here is where I can’t remember the exact details) the told the student to either rewrite the thesis or accept a C- on it. Needless to say, the student graduated and later went on to start LifeFitness, a successful fitness company that brought together technology and exercise for a more well-rounded workout.

  • Melissa March 20, 2009, 11:02 am

    What a wonderful treadmill!

  • Jess March 20, 2009, 11:10 am

Wow that treadmill is super techy haha! Nice job getting some workouts in on your vacatioNn!

  • tfh March 20, 2009, 11:21 am

That treadmill actually tempts me, rare for treadmills! Great job fitting everything in. Ouch– dropping the bowl sounds like something I would do; don’t worry, I’m sure half the guests were were thinking the same thing!

  • Erin of Care to Eat March 20, 2009, 11:21 am

I love the workout equipment at the Hyatt! I’m so glad you’re staying there so you can stay on track you badass you!

  • jesslikesithot March 20, 2009, 12:28 pm

Caitlin!! Made your “perfect baked tofu” the other night and it turned out perfectly!!! So spicy and good, thank you!!

That hotel breakfast looks perfect, you definitely made best of the hotel food!!!

  • Anonymous March 20, 2009, 1:02 pm

Hi caitlin! Do you attribute the extra calorie burn in your run today to the sprints? I think you said you usually burn 80/mile but today was much higher! Way to go!

  • redheadedjournal March 20, 2009, 1:31 pm

Sounds like a great workout! I dropped an iced tea in the elevator at work and it went EVERYWHERE!

  • Oh She Glows March 20, 2009, 3:35 pm

hehe sounds like my hunny…Eric LOVES his sleep and will sleep until I drag him out of bed!!

Sorry about the smashed dishes…I hate when that happens!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point March 20, 2009, 5:22 pm

runningwithin- i’ve always done 0% incline, but now that you mention it, i may try an inline tomorrow morning!

tc-hahaha a perfect example of why you should never let 1 person’s opinion stop you from doing something

anon – yes, i burn 80 calorie/hour at a 10 minute/mile burn, so i figured i burned a little extra. i really need to get my HRM fixed, though.

  • ChickPea March 20, 2009, 10:39 pm

Isn’t it nice when hotel gyms are so spiffy?

I am a fan of mixing cereals too–your combo looks so tasty!
