The Hardest Part

in All Posts

Suddenly, I could NOT remember why I’m trying to quit coffee.  Seriously! I was standing in the kitchen this AM, and I could literally taste the creaminess of my favorite hazelnut brew on my tongue. AHHHHHH!!!  This is the hardest part of Crap Free Week, for sure!

I somehow found the strength to make English Breakfast Tea instead.  :(

And oatmeal

CIMG1680

My oatmeal contained:

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 sliced banana
  • Toppings: strawberries, coconut (counts as crap free, as it’s raw and unsweetened), and almonds

CIMG1681

It was a delicious bowl of oatmeal, and it ALMOST took my mind off the lack of coffee.

I have today off from work (YAY) so I’m actually driving to Tampa this afternoon to have lunch with Jenna and Lindsay to have lunch! I’m so excited. 🙂

Have a great day!  I’ll be back with a more engaging and fun post after lunch, I promise!

  • brandi February 6, 2009, 7:32 am

    that oatmeal looks really good.

I finally found the unsweetened coconut and I like it so much better than the sweetened! it’s so good on oatmeal.

    Have fun at lunch!

I’m not at work today, either, but not for a fun reason 🙂

  • Kailey (SnackFace) February 6, 2009, 7:33 am

Aw I’m sorry about the coffee thing. I’d be bummed too if I couldn’t drink it. I guess that’s why I’ll never give it up. You’re a stronger person than I am, obvs! Have a glorious afternoon!
Thanks for the luck on my script-memorizing. It went better than I’d expected 🙂

  • Vegan On Stage February 6, 2009, 7:35 am

that oatmeal looks amazing!! and the bowl makes it look especially beautiful!

  • Mica February 6, 2009, 7:36 am

Hahaha, this is probably really crude, but at least “Crap-free” week isn’t really “crap” free. I think that would actually be harder than giving up coffee.

I’m sorry you’re having a hard time though! Good luck, you can do it!

  • Meg February 6, 2009, 7:36 am

Enjoy your lunch and hang in there with the coffee withdrawal!

  • Beadie @ What I Ate Yesterday February 6, 2009, 7:45 am

Hang in there with the coffee.

Have you tried yerba matte? The last time I gave up coffee, that is what I drank and it really helped.

  • HangryPants February 6, 2009, 7:47 am

The creamy coffee is just around the corner!

Have fun at lunch with the ladies!

  • Bec February 6, 2009, 7:50 am

Way for sticking with the no coffee!

  • Sarah (lovINmytummy) February 6, 2009, 8:05 am

You are crazy to take a car trip anywhere without a cup of coffee. I’d be done-zo. You are a stronger woman than I.

  • Katie February 6, 2009, 8:12 am

I hear ya on the coffee withdrawal. It will get better. I was drinking 3-5 cups a day through the week and several more than that on the weekends. Per doc’s orders, I’ve been cut back to 12 oz. per day of anything other than water. It’s waaaay harder than I thought, but it’s getting easier.

    Have a fantastic lunch!

  • Lauren February 6, 2009, 8:24 am

ahhh…i was in tampa yesterday at lunch for work…too bad it wasn’t today!

  • Nancy February 6, 2009, 9:00 am

    Good morning Caitlin! 🙂

first of all, I feel your pain… I can’t imagine not having coffee in the morning- seriously at night when I fall asleep it’s what I look forward to in the morning! I really think its the taste that I enjoy.. I don’t think “I need the caffeine!” I just love the taste and smell. But KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! If this is important to you, then stay strong because you will be so proud of yourself when it’s over!

    QUESTION TIME!
So I was thinking I haven’t ran since Monday 🙁 and it’s bothering me. It really makes me sad when I don’t run- weird right? It kinda keeps my whole life in track- I eat right, feel good.. without it I feel so sloppy. I was wondering what you think… do you think the joy of running is FINISHING your planned runs and feeling like you accomplished something that makes u feel better, stronger, more confident and ALSO makes u enjoy eating more because you know your body is really using what you eat to fuel it as a “running machine” lol rather than just having it sit in your body and feel like you are piling up pounds instead of burning it for fuel? This may be weird but I just was thinking about the Psychology behind running and how it makes us feel and why it makes us feel so “complete.” I enjoy other workouts but no matter what, when I run I feel satisfied. Nothing else does it for me like running does…. any ideas? I hope I’m not annoying you with my random train of thought! I really love your blog and love your views and ideas… they seem so genuine and pure. You are very honest and that’s why I love hearing your opinions about things. I would love to hear what other runners have to say about this also… 🙂

  • balanceisbest February 6, 2009, 9:08 am

I’m so proud of you! I didn’t even give up coffee, but simply had a hard time without any diet soda yesterday.

    Have fun in Tampa!

Hang in there! You are doing amazing 🙂

    That oatmeal is so pretty!

  • Betsy in Pittsburgh February 6, 2009, 9:21 am

I hate coffee. I’ve never actually had a whole cup! Just a few sips that made me gag. My bf grinds beans every morning and I can’t stand the way they smell. Everyone always tells me I’m lucky for not becoming addicted to coffee… but I keep thinking I’m missing out on something really good!

  • Rose February 6, 2009, 9:40 am

    Enjoy your lunch!

Why are you giving up coffee again? I will have to re-read your old posts…

  • imadedinner February 6, 2009, 9:57 am

Good luck with the coffee withdrawl! MAN i couldn’t do that!!!

  • lilveggiepatch February 6, 2009, 10:03 am

    Have fun with the girls!

P.S. You’re going to be SO weirded out by this, but you were in my dream last night!!!

  • Ryan (chasing daylight) February 6, 2009, 10:06 am

Exciting!! I’ll be in Tampa tomorrow! Then Orlando on Sunday for the big birthday 😀

  • angelcubbie February 6, 2009, 10:27 am

You are brave Caitlin! I would die without my coffee, I gave it up once for two weeks just to prove to myself that I can and now that I feel good knowing I can I have no intention of giving it up again, lol.

I have a question for you. It’s pouring outside and I have an 11-miler scheduled for tomorrow. What would you do in this scenario. I’ve ran in light rain and even snow before before but maybe I’m being wimpy, I don’t feel like doing 11 miles in the rain (is this wimpy? lol) I also cannot see myself doing this on a treadmill as I think I would be bored to death. Have you ever done a long run on a treadmill? I was also thinking of doing a 60 minute spin class followed by a 40 min treadmill run and considering it a substitute due to the length of the workout. What do you think?

Sorry for such a long question!

  • Maggie February 6, 2009, 10:35 am

I think I really want to try my own crap free week. You’re doing great!!!

  • Healthy Body Healthy Mind February 6, 2009, 10:53 am

I think that’s awesome you are going crap free. Giving up coffee would definitely be the hardest part for me!!

  • Elizabeth (thelongweigh) February 6, 2009, 11:08 am

This crap free week food looks delicious! Good luck staying away from the coffee! You will be fine!

  • sarah February 6, 2009, 11:41 am

i think i would die without coffee. you are strong!!! that is all 🙂

  • alessa February 6, 2009, 12:15 pm

    hi caitlyn,
first.. i think you and your hubby are just adorable! i have been reading for a little while now, but have never commented.

i have been running as exercise for a number of years now, probably about 5! but have never run a race. i FINALLY signed up for one in june and i am so excited. i will be running a half marathon. i know you have run a lot of races, so i thought you would be a good person to go to in the future for tips and advice! i know i will be a little anxious come race day…

Almonds and strawberries are such a good combo!

    Have fun today 🙂

  • Trust, Hope, Believe February 6, 2009, 12:59 pm

that oatmeal looks like it could be from a food magazine!

Hope you have fun at lunch 🙂

After CFW are you going to go back to coffee?

  • Heather McD (Heather Eats Almond Butter) February 6, 2009, 1:20 pm

Can’t wait for lunch details. I give up coffee every few months, but always pick up the habit up again. Stay strong Caitlin. Hopefully, you’ll inspire me. 🙂

  • Sharon February 6, 2009, 1:45 pm

    Oh tasty oats!!!!
Hope the coffee thing turns out okay!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point February 6, 2009, 2:22 pm

karen – very interesting! i definitely get antsy if i have not been running in a while. i agree that running satifies me like no other workout. i think its because i get super sweaty after a run and i think sweat = work! 🙂 hmmm i also agree that running allows me to enjoy food more than i would if i wasn’t running. knowing i’m fueling the “machine” allows me to eat a little more or something sweeter! 🙂

i think i get a “runner’s high” from knowing i just did something physically AND mentally demanding. i also think i get grumpy without running because exercise really does release happy chemicals in your brain. so i would agree with you in many ways!

running just makes me feel strong and independent as well, which i like.

rose and trust/hope/believe- im just trying to break my dependency on coffee. i dont plan to give it up forever!! i plan to drink it again after CFW is over.

little veggie path – hahah really??? what was the dream about?

angelcubbie – hey! man, you’re really extending your running distance. i dont blame you for wanting to run in the rain. 11 miles with soaking sneakers is NOT cool. if i were you, i would push back my run until sunday. if it looks like its going to rain sunday, too, or if you just can’t do it on sunday, i would say doing a spin class + a 40 minute run on the treadill would be a really good substitute! its very admirable that you dont want to miss a long run. i personally would never ever do 11 miles on a treadmill because i would probably shoot myself of boredom. 🙂

alessa- awesome!! i welcome you in advance to the 13.1 club. feel free to email me at seebriderun@gmail.com if you have any questions. have you picked out a training plan? i like hal hidgon’s (google it).

That sounds painful. I am afraid of this happening, but I do want to weane myself off.
