Afternoon! We’re starting to get settled for the Eagles game. I hope they win, and its Steelers and Eagles in the Superbowl!

I set out on my long, long run around 12 PM and didn’t return for more than 2 hours!  I nearly squeezed out a half marathon distance.  In total, I ran 12.0 miles.

Before I left, I wrapped five Powerade Gel Blasts in a ziploc bag and put it my pocket.

CIMG0944

Five of the Chew Blasts have 110 calories. I always take a snack with me on runs longer than 8 or 9 miles.

After using Google Earth to map out a 6.0-mile path (I prefer out-and-back routes to loops), I set out on my 12.0-mile journey.

I started to hit the wall around Mile 9.0.  I was just sick of running!  And I had more than 3.0 miles to go.   I stopped to walk for about 30 seconds and stretched, and then I just tried to zone out to my iPod. After doing some mentally fidgeting around mile 10.0, I listened to a Lady Gaga and a Britney song and finished strong.

Here are my statistics:

  • Duration:  2 hours and 3 minutes
  • Average Heart Rate: 167 bpm
  • Maximum Heart Rate: 185
  • Calories Burned: 1,127

The rest of day is going to require a LOT of refueling, so I’ll probably eat 2 HUGE snacks before a HUGE dinner. πŸ™‚

After getting home, I had a Muscle Milk Light Smoothie with 1 scoop and 1 cup milk.

I took a shower and then Huz and I set to work making lunch.

CIMG0947

We used our new George Foreman to press a turkey, spinach, and cheddar sammie.

CIMG0949

About 1/2 cup Grape Nuts and NF plain yogurt….

Some cherries and pickles…

So, my new Asics felt great!  So much more padding than my old New Balances.  I usually get what I call "Stop/Start Pain" when I take walking breaks during my run, but not today!!

Yay!!

What’s your favorite exercise gear?  I love my running skirt… and of course, my iPod!

  • Leah January 18, 2009, 1:26 pm

Wow, 12 miles that is great!!

I love my Asics as well. I had a pair of New Balance (and don’t get me wrong I liked those too), but I love the Asics much better!!

I always have to have my Ipod with me.. unless my fiancé is running with me – then we can talk πŸ™‚

  • inmytummy January 18, 2009, 1:27 pm

Awesome! How do those Powerade things compare to the Clif gummy things? I’m the opposite of you when it comes to long runs, I prefer loops instead of out and back.

  • ttfn300 January 18, 2009, 1:29 pm

wowsa, what a run! i’m trying to muster up the movivation to trek through the snow to the gym so i can run on the treadmill… eugh.

  • Caitlin (see bride run) January 18, 2009, 1:31 pm

  • Jen January 18, 2009, 1:36 pm

I LOVE my Asics!!! Swear by them.
When you go to Google Earth, do map out a roue from home or do you drive to your starting point? Also, where on that site are you able to do that? I looked, but don’t see where to go/click to do that. Thanks!
    Congrats, newlywed!

  • VeggieGirl January 18, 2009, 1:42 pm

  • Matt January 18, 2009, 1:49 pm

awesome run! i love sundays just because it’s my long run day!

my favorite piece of running gear is my garmin, and in second place would be my black nikefit shirt (i look pretty darn good in it)!

  • Caitlin (see bride run) January 18, 2009, 1:58 pm

jen – download google earth and type your address (or the starting address) in the “go to” space in the program. use the ruler tool (change the option on the ruler tool bar to “path” and “miles” first) to outline your path. its great!

i start from my house most of the time. i only have to run along a not-pretty roadway for about 0.5 mile to get to a quiet area.

  • Lindsay January 18, 2009, 2:12 pm

What type of Asics did you go with?

Congrats on the double digits!! I'm supposed to be in marathon training for an April marathon but alas, here in northern Illinois it's been crazy cold so I haven't been able to get outside too often. And at the Y there are too many people (New Years resolution people) for me to be on the treadmill for over 30 minutes at a time. I think this will be my last try at a spring marathon. I'm sticking with fall & winter ones.

  • Olga January 18, 2009, 3:04 pm

My fave exercise gear right now has to be my new Asics sneakers! Lovveee them and of course, my lovely treadmill!

Dang, 12 miles, that’s awesome. Nice work! Glad to hear the new shoes did you well.

I love my iPod when I exercise. It definitely helps you focus on other things besides the physical pain!

Wow, fabulous run!!! I love my iPod!

  • teacherwoman January 18, 2009, 3:29 pm

Glad to hear the asics are treating you well. Nice job on that 12-miler.

Favorite running gear? Must be my ipod. I do a lot of running on my own and it’s just nice company. I get lost in the music!

  • kristi January 18, 2009, 3:58 pm

Caitlin you are amazing girl! 12 miles….wow!

By the way, I always wondered how you all mapped out your runs so thanks so much for mentioning Google Earth. I just downloaded it a little bit ago and am playing around on it right now. It is so cool!

Whoa whoa whoa … way to just count the Ravens out! Game’s not over yet … Ravens could be there, Pitt could be out.

  • Caitlin (see bride run) January 18, 2009, 6:14 pm

renee – haha well it was the match up i was HOPING for because I’m from Pittsburgh. BUT, the eagles sucked, so we’re out! but i still must say… goooo steelers! πŸ™‚

  • Lee January 18, 2009, 6:26 pm

I don’t know if it’s the same, but gmap-pedometer.com is a good tool for mapping runs, as is mapmyrun.com.

  • Chris January 18, 2009, 7:32 pm

Congrats on the long run – 12 is a great distance!

My favorite gear for running is my watch and my cell phone/iPod. I don’t always listen to music, but if I don’t know the mile marks for my runs (out and backs, or loops usually) I keep them on my phone/iPod to check my pace. My brain LOVES doing splits when I’m running!

When you start getting bored as you’re running, try mixing it up in your brain. I like to make lists (to-do’s, things I’m thankful for, favorite cookies/ice cream flavors), pick off things in the distance, or call my friends or mom and dad to talk to. It takes a little skill to talk on the phone when you’re running, but it’s fun!

  • chasedaylight January 18, 2009, 7:42 pm

Wow, fantastic run!!! Glad your Asics served you well during it πŸ™‚

My favorite is my iPod/Nike+ combination!

  • Amanda January 18, 2009, 8:01 pm

Woo hoo … VERY impressive run! Must feel good knocking out that distance, especially looking ahead to the half πŸ™‚

So glad you like the Asics … I wouldn’t wear another brand since I’ve worn them!

My fav running accessories have to be my ipod, my Polar HRM, and my Nike running shorts. They are the really lightweight ones with the built in underwear and little pocket for my keys. Totally perfect!!

  • Victoria January 18, 2009, 8:45 pm

I absolutely cannot run without my iPod. It’s sad actually.

Great job making it through that run!

  • talesofexpansion January 18, 2009, 9:10 pm

mmm, that sandwich looks so perfectly crispy!

i’m an asics girl, too — and my other favorite exercise gear is my new polar heart rate monitor. i’m loving getting instant stats on my workouts!

  • Sarah W. January 19, 2009, 8:28 am

    yay for that long run!

where can I buy those powerade chews or clif shot bloks? I was at wegmans this weekend and thought I might find them near the energy bars but I couldn’t find them πŸ™ any ideas?

I love my ipod! I ran for 1hour and 6 mins this weekend (5.5miles) a PERSONAL RECORD!!

  • Caitlin (see bride run) January 19, 2009, 8:51 am

sarah w – congrats on your long run! i would try a place like sports authority or dick’s for the shot bloks. i’ve seem them there loads of time.

  • d.a.r. January 19, 2009, 5:07 pm

I just found your blog and absolutely LOVE it. How do you like the Chew Blasts???

  • Caitlin (see bride run) January 19, 2009, 7:20 pm

i thought the chew blast were good, but i prefer taking gummy beans with me… they are a lot cheaper and just as good (and full of sugar, which is what i’m looking for 10 miles into a run)!! πŸ™‚

  • Anonymous January 20, 2009, 5:06 pm

what HR monitor do you use and how do you figure out the calories burned?

  • Caitlin (see bride run) January 20, 2009, 7:27 pm

hey anon – i have a polar f4 heart rate monitor. you input your age, sex, and weight info and then it calculates your calories burned.
