Rock and Read 5K Race Recap (and More)

by Caitlin on November 4, 2012

Whoa.  What a Saturday!  It started off in the best of ways – MomHTP had spontaneously decided to come visit!  Especially now that I have Henry, I miss my mom so much.  And it was fun for her to see the little guy – he’s learned a lot of new skills since she was here last.

We woke up bright and early (not too hard with Henry in the house) and they accompanied me to the Rock and Read 5K, which benefits local libraries.  A bunch of my friends ran the race, too, which I didn’t really realize was happening until I got to the start.  It was a small race so it was easy to find people.

(Thanks to my buddy Brittney for a lot of these race pics!)

I was bib #26 (my favorite number), which was fun.  I was pacing Cindi – it was her first race.  She said her goal was not to take any walking breaks – a good 5K goal for me, too, right now, especially with such a hard and hilly course!

I was so happy for her – she did great!  We didn’t walk once, even up the reaaaaally big and intimidating hills.  Success!

At the finish line was my little man.  Made me so happy.  He was toasty warm despite the cooler temps.  Nothing like a cozy car seat to do the trick.

After the race, Mom and I went antiquing… Obviously.  You know how we roll.  Is a weekend with my mother complete if I don’t go to the thrift store or consignment sale?  No.

Turns out, Henry love antiquing.   He cooed and laughed the entire time.  Lots of funny things to look at.

And then…. this happened.

I always said I wasn’t a cat person, but I guess I am.  Welcome to the Boyle house, grey kitty.

Wow, a cat! How are the dogs getting along with the cat? Introducing my dog to my husband’s cat was stressful; took a long while before there was peace in the house. Doing it while having a baby would have killed me!

Maggie doesn’t care (about anything). And James kind of wants to eat her but they sorted it out last night and determined who is alpha (she is). We are keeping her in our master bathroom for now though so she has some time to adjust.

That cat is so pretty! I guess you must have completely fallen for it, or did Henry talk you into it? ;)

Sad I missed the race- looks like a good time! And whaaaa – you got a cat?!

Kendra @ My Full-Thyme Life November 4, 2012 at 7:51 am

Horray for kitty! I love cats and my theory on “non-cat people” is either 1) they’ve never had a cat, 2) they had a cat but it wasn’t friendly and wanted nothing to do with people or, 3) they are alergic.

Once you have a sweet, lovable, friendly cat you will forever be transformed! But be careful because cats are like potato chips, you can’t have just one! ;)

Okay, just realized I sound like a crazy cat lady! I should stop now…

Reply

KatieTX November 4, 2012 at 11:31 am

I 100% agree with you. Crazy cat lady right here…

” cats are like potato chips, you can’t have just one! ”

I totally agree! This made me laugh :)

Reply

Vicki November 4, 2012 at 4:42 pm

Haha yes I agree too! I always say that people who think they aren’t cat people are people who haven’t been adopted by a cat yet. It’s all about perspective.

Julie (A Case of the Runs) November 4, 2012 at 6:24 pm

I used to really dislike cats, until one just barged into our house one day (pretty much literally). Now, I am a total believer! I also have a dog, so I figure there’s enough love for both species!

Reenie November 4, 2012 at 8:35 pm

Cat person here. I have 2. =) It makes me mad when someone says that cats have no personality!! Are you kidding me!! They most certainly do. Your kit-kat is very pretty. Can’t wait to hear your story.

Dominique November 5, 2012 at 1:19 am

I totally with the original poster, Kendra. My fiance never had cats (he always grew up with dogs) until we moved in and I took two of my family’s cats with us. He’s now head over heels with them and misses them when he’s away. I’m allergic to cats too but only if they scratch or if I clean the litter box.

Caitlin, your cat is adorable!! It totally makes me want a grey one now. I keep trying to convince the fiance to get another but our condo building technically only allows one pet so we’d really be stretching it with three.

Kim November 4, 2012 at 7:51 am

Yeahhhh!!! I love to hear when animals get great homes!! What did you name her?

Reply

Lea @ Greens and Coffee Beans November 4, 2012 at 8:19 am

Your cat is adorable! Your going to love having a cat (well I’m biased because my family has 5, yes we are crazy cat people), but they are much less high maintenance than dogs, and just as cuddly.

What kind of jeans are those? I really like the cut (not too skinny on the bottom, but still a slim leg)!

They are from express but I don’t think they carry them anymore.

Aww, sounds like a great Saturday. I love Henry’s “Boyle” hat in that post-race picture — so cute! And yay for the new cat. Do you have any name ideas yet? My fiance and I adopted a cat a year ago but never could agree on a name. He remains ‘Kitty’ to this day, but now it oddly seems to suit him!

Also, somewhat belatedly, I just wanted to thank you for having such an awesome blog! I’ve been reading for about two years now, but never commented before your NYC Marathon post. (I tend not to be much of a commenter on blogs in general, but that post hit close to home for me.)

Anyway, as someone who’s been trying to find a “tipping point” for healthy living, I just wanted to say that your blog has been really helpful and motivating. Thanks again! =)

Trina November 4, 2012 at 11:54 am

Our cat is “Kitty” too, but mostly because he was my old roommate’s cat and she gave him a really dumb name. I ended up with him and he’s always been Kitty.

You asked on twitter for a cat name with the family tradition of the name having to be a famous English person — how about Lady Catherine (or Cat-ie) for Lady Catherine of Wuthering Heights? (Ok, I watched the movie when I read your tweet.. :-) )

Congrats on the cat (and thank you for giving her a home!)

Visits from your mama just take on a whole new meaning when you have kids! I used to clean my house really well before my mom visited but now I look at her visits as a time when I can get the house clean while she entertains my toddler!

We have a grey kitty that looks so much like yours that my daughter yelled “Max!” when she peeked up at this post over my shoulder.

I HATED cats…until I got one. Now I love both dogs and cats though I only have a cat. I feel bad for her being alone so much because I’m always working but she hates other cats so I can’t get another one. I want to get a dog once my new job settles down and I have more time for it. Even though I’ve been waffling back and forth, I’ve been leaning more and more towards getting one. :) It’s so funny how cats will take over the house and “teach” the dogs how to behave around them.

I think Nigella or Pippa would be suitable names ;)

Your kitty looks just like my brother’s kitty!!! Like you name it after something British, when living in North Carolina, my brother named his pets after Boston sports teams, so his name is Sox (after the Red Sox). Love Pippa as a name though….very cute :)

Reply

Penny November 4, 2012 at 3:58 pm

I know you were wanting Brit names- my husband named our kitties Bubble and Squeak! I have no idea what the reference is, nor do a lot of people, but he sure does!
