Whoa. What a Saturday! It started off in the best of ways – MomHTP had spontaneously decided to come visit! Especially now that I have Henry, I miss my mom so much. And it was fun for her to see the little guy – he’s learned a lot of new skills since she was here last.
We woke up bright and early (not too hard with Henry in the house) and they accompanied me to the Rock and Read 5K, which benefits local libraries. A bunch of my friends ran the race, too, which I didn’t really realize was happening until I got to the start. It was a small race so it was easy to find people.
(Thanks to my buddy Brittney for a lot of these race pics!)
I was bib #26 (my favorite number), which was fun. I was pacing Cindi – it was her first race. She said her goal was not to take any walking breaks – a good 5K goal for me, too, right now, especially with such a hard and hilly course!
I was so happy for her – she did great! We didn’t walk once, even up the reaaaaally big and intimidating hills. Success!
At the finish line was my little man. Made me so happy. He was toasty warm despite the cooler temps. Nothing like a cozy car seat to do the trick.
After the race, Mom and I went antiquing… Obviously. You know how we roll. Is a weekend with my mother complete if I don’t go to the thrift store or consignment sale? No.
Turns out, Henry love antiquing. He cooed and laughed the entire time. Lots of funny things to look at.
And then…. this happened.
I always said I wasn’t a cat person, but I guess I am. Welcome to the Boyle house, grey kitty.

Wow, a cat! How are the dogs getting along with the cat? Introducing my dog to my husband’s cat was stressful; took a long while before there was peace in the house. Doing it while having a baby would have killed me!
Maggie doesn’t care (about anything). And James kind of wants to eat her but they sorted it out last night and determined who is alpha (she is). We are keeping her in our master bathroom for now though so she has some time to adjust.
That cat is so pretty! I guess you must have completely fallen for it, or did Henry talk you into it?
gorgeous kitty, so sweet, i hope she brings a lot of joy in your family
oh my goodness! You got a cat! Seriously, that is a majorly packed day. Race, Antiquing, and a Cat! Looks chilly in Charlotte
Sad I missed the race- looks like a good time! And whaaaa – you got a cat?!
Horray for kitty! I love cats and my theory on “non-cat people” is either 1) they’ve never had a cat, 2) they had a cat but it wasn’t friendly and wanted nothing to do with people or, 3) they are alergic.
Once you have a sweet, lovable, friendly cat you will forever be transformed! But be careful because cats are like potato chips, you can’t have just one!
Okay, just realized I sound like a crazy cat lady! I should stop now…
I 100% agree with you. Crazy cat lady right here…
” cats are like potato chips, you can’t have just one! ”
I totally agree! This made me laugh
Haha yes I agree too! I always say that people who think they aren’t cat people are people who haven’t been adopted by a cat yet. It’s all about perspective.
I used to really dislike cats, until one just barged into our house one day (pretty much literally). Now, I am a total believer! I also have a dog, so I figure there’s enough love for both species!
Cat person here. I have 2. =) It makes me mad when someone says that cats have no personality!! Are you kidding me!! They most certainly do. Your kit-kat is very pretty. Can’t wait to hear your story.
I totally with the original poster, Kendra. My fiance never had cats (he always grew up with dogs) until we moved in and I took two of my family’s cats with us. He’s now head over heels with them and misses them when he’s away. I’m allergic to cats too but only if they scratch or if I clean the litter box.
Caitlin, your cat is adorable!! It totally makes me want a grey one now. I keep trying to convince the fiance to get another but our condo building technically only allows one pet so we’d really be stretching it with three.
Yeahhhh!!! I love to hear when animals get great homes!! What did you name her?
Your cat is adorable! Your going to love having a cat (well I’m biased because my family has 5, yes we are crazy cat people), but they are much less high maintenance than dogs, and just as cuddly.
What kind of jeans are those? I really like the cut (not too skinny on the bottom, but still a slim leg)!
They are from express but I don’t think they carry them anymore.
Oh how fun! How do the dogs feel? Our dog and cat love one another
Aww, sounds like a great Saturday. I love Henry’s “Boyle” hat in that post-race picture — so cute! And yay for the new cat. Do you have any name ideas yet? My fiance and I adopted a cat a year ago but never could agree on a name. He remains ‘Kitty’ to this day, but now it oddly seems to suit him!

Also, somewhat belatedly, I just wanted to thank you for having such an awesome blog! I’ve been reading for about two years now, but never commented before your NYC Marathon post. (I tend not to be much of a commenter on blogs in general, but that post hit close to home for me.)
Anyway, as someone who’s been trying to find a “tipping point” for healthy living, I just wanted to say that your blog has been really helpful and motivating. Thanks again! =)
Our cat is “Kitty” too, but mostly because he was my old roommate’s cat and she gave him a really dumb name. I ended up with him and he’s always been Kitty.
We have 2 kitties and they are extremely entertaining
congrats!
You asked on twitter for a cat name with the family tradition of the name having to be a famous English person — how about Lady Catherine (or Cat-ie) for Lady Catherine of Wuthering Heights? (Ok, I watched the movie when I read your tweet..
)
Congrats on the cat (and thank you for giving her a home!)
Awwww… seeing the grey kitty made me smile.
Visits from your mama just take on a whole new meaning when you have kids! I used to clean my house really well before my mom visited but now I look at her visits as a time when I can get the house clean while she entertains my toddler!
We have a grey kitty that looks so much like yours that my daughter yelled “Max!” when she peeked up at this post over my shoulder.
Yay!!!! I love kitties.:)
Awwww I am so happy for that lucky kitty and Henryy!!!!!
Yay for 5k’s and kitties! Congratulations on both. We have 2 dogs that aren’t cat fans but I so wish they were so we could add to our fur family.
Had so much fun running with you! Thank you so much for keeping me going & for staying with me! xoxo
Cliff Hanger Ending of a blog post!! I can’t wait to learn more about the newest member of the Boyle house!
Congrats on the newest addition to the family! Welcome, KittyHTP! We have 4 kitties and a dog and they really make a house a home. Trust me, you’ll become a cat person. They adopt you, not the other way around.
I HATED cats…until I got one. Now I love both dogs and cats though I only have a cat. I feel bad for her being alone so much because I’m always working but she hates other cats so I can’t get another one. I want to get a dog once my new job settles down and I have more time for it. Even though I’ve been waffling back and forth, I’ve been leaning more and more towards getting one.
It’s so funny how cats will take over the house and “teach” the dogs how to behave around them.
Ahh! Yay! Congratulations, being a cat mama is great!
You got a cat!?!?!? Hahahaha I guess one more pet wouldn’t hurt! Can’t wait to hear more about it! And Henry looks so cute in the photo at the end of your race!
Yay! What a cute cat! You can tell he was just begging for you to take him home
Awww! It’ll be funny to see how your dogs react!
Sounds like a fabulous day! And hooray for supporting local libraries (I’m a reference librarian). Congrats on super cute grey kitteh
You adopted a kitty?!!!! Love cats
Congratulations! Can’t wait to hear more! Have fun with your mom!
Awww, I’m so happy to brought that kitty home! I’ve been lucky to always have great cats growing up, so I am definitely a cat person. They can be awesome pets. I hope everyone adjusts quickly!
Aww that kitty is so adorable! Your run sounds so fun:) Love your blog!
Congratulations on your new addition!
Yeah for kitties! I have 2 plus 3 strays that we feed. Dogs and cats are awesome in their own ways, you love it.
Pretty kitty! Grey ones are my favorite
Aw I could never have a cat since my boyfriend is insanely allergic. Only pups for us !
Ahhhhhh! Cats are the best, seriously!
awwww, you got a kitteh!
You got a kitty! So happy for you! What’s her name?
What is her name? I love our cats. She’ll make a nice edition. Is she indoor/outdoor, or just indoor?
YAY, how exciting, both the 5k and the kitty! He is so pretty. Can’t wait to read more about him.
Congratulations on the new member of your family! Can’t wait to see what the pups think about it
I saw your tweet about naming the new kitty… how about Paula Radcliffe?
Love it!
What a fun day! I say go with a character from Downton
(Cora? Violet?)
Oh goodness that cat is beautiful, I have two cats of my own, I hope he is wonderful for you :]
Aw! What a cute cat!
Kitty!! There are cats that are social, awesome, and love dogs..I can’t wait to hear more about her.
Beautiful kitty! Congratulations! Cats are wonderful family members!
What a wonderful weekend! I can’t wait to meet this new cat…and hear the story. I was never a cat person but feel in love with a boy and then his cat. I can’t tell you how much fun she was and what a hoot. She had so much personality and had me laughing all the day (except when she was trying to break into my purse)! Congrats on your race. YOu are one fit Mama!
Ohhhh, sweet Kitty!
AWWWWWW! Congrats on the new kitteh!! I love love love dogs and when we live somewhere where we’re allowed, I’m sure we will. For now we’ve got our 18 y/o Snowcat that I’ve had since I was 12 and in 6th grade (I’ll be 31 next month). ^-^ She’s still going strong! Super-cat I tell ya.
What do the dogs think?? What did you name him/her?? So adorable.
Ahhhh you got a kitty! I love gray cats. Their fur is like velvet! Are you going to do a separate post on the kitty adoption decision process?
Yup!
Your kitty looks almost exactly like my kitty! This makes me so happy for some reason! Congratulations on the new family member!
Cute cat! It seems like an odd choice considering how busy/overwhelmed you keep saying you are. Curious why you decided now was the right time, given your schedules and having a new baby?
The husband is on cat duty
Do you adopt the cat or bought it in a pet shop ? I think it was on your list of “100 dreams” to adopt an animal, no ?
Adopt! I would never buy a cat from a pet shop.
Cool !
Yay, a kitty! Looks like a sweetheart!
Adorable kitty…pets bring wonderful things to childhood, I think. We’ve got three children, two dogs, a hamster, a lizard and 8 fish. They’re lots of work, but so worth it!
I think Nigella or Pippa would be suitable names
Her name is (currently) pippa!
Eeeek! My cat’s name is Pippa, we also adopted her from the local animal welfare
Keep iiiit, it’s a super kitty name!
Soo jealous you got a kitty!! I have been looking into getting a puppy and can hardly wait to have some animal love in my apartment.
Wow–what a surprise. Congratulations on your new family member.
My husband and I adopted a dog. We would adopt a cat, too, but I’m allergic.
I look forward to hearing more about the kitty!
You should name her ’26′! I didn’t know that was your favorite number. It’s so funny that your fav and Kerf’s is the same! I can’t remember – is your birthday the 26th?
Yes
I have been wanting a kitten!! I am usually a dog person but have realized it is going to be awhile before I am living somewhere that allows puppies and have enough money for one. I have been looking for an orange tabby one…so cute! Congrats.
Your kitty looks just like my brother’s kitty!!! Like you name it after something British, when living in North Carolina, my brother named his pets after Boston sports teams, so his name is Sox (after the Red Sox). Love Pippa as a name though….very cute
I know you were wanting Brit names- my husband named our kitties Bubble and Squeak! I have no idea what the reference is, nor do a lot of people, but he sure does!
Cute! It’s a name for food here. I want to say mash potato and onion… Something like that!
ha i thought it was a nickname for penis and balls. i will have to ask the husband about this.
I was going to suggest the name Claire. I love people names for animals! But then again I always come up with 100 crazy nicknames for my pets!
haha claire is our future daughter name
Bubble and squeak is a mash potato & cabbage dish
Yay! You got a cat! I have three cats and one dog. I always say my one-eyed cat wanted to get a dog. lol it is kinda true because he likes to play rough, and well now that we have a dog they are completely in love!
Awww congrats on your kitty!!! What a cutie.
I’ve been saying that Im going to adopt a dog for the past several months, but I’m unsure how our crazy cat would react. I hope your transition goes smoothly!
You adopted a kitty?!!
Good for you!!
Been there…. and then… oops…
And that was 11 years ago and our little Felix has been with us ever since, he’s a wonderful pet… more of a dog than a cat, he plays with our dogs all the time, he’s got spunk that one
And excellent race accomplishment! You should be really proud of yourself Mama!
Horray for a nice morning 5k!
How are the dogs reacting to the cat around the house?
Congrats on the kitty! I can’t wait to hear the story, the name, everything. And I love that you adopt rescues
. Rescue kitties are the best kitties!
Yay for a kitty! Our one dog doesn’t pay attention to our cats. Our other one loves the cats. We only had her when we got our first kitten and she was OBSESSED with the kitten. Licked it constantly and wanted to be with it. She loves cats
(But they do both enjoy chasing the cats for fun, ha.)
Did you break a race rule (I think it’s your race rule) to not wear a shirt advertising for a race bigger than the race you’re running? (i.e., marathon vs. 5K!)
Haha yes!!! I felt like such a douche canoe when I got there and realized what had happened.
