GOOD MORNING! It’s time for a heart-thumping 5K race through the Inner Harbor.
I don’t think any of the girls in my room got a good night sleep, and I’ll admit that I tried to blow off the 5K race… but Anne P dragged me out of bed.
The weather this morning was GLORIOUS, so it was totally worth getting my booty out of bed.
Before we left, I had a banana, which I snagged from Gracie’s bag.
And then we met about 90 other walkers and runners downstairs in the conference room.
New Balance is sponsoring parts of the event, and they gave everyone free shoes according to their walk/run needs. In the end, I decided not to wear new shoes because I knew we were going to run a very, very speedy 5K. But I’m excited to test them out for a shorter workout soon!
The 5K went around the boardwalk area in Baltimore. I tried to stay at the front of the pack, but BOY – those girls can run FAST!
We ended up finishing the 5K in about 24:00 minutes. Our first mile was about 7:30, our second was 8:30, and we finished up around 7:15ish.
Weeeeeee!
I’m off to the conference… There is a breakfast buffet of OATMEAL and I can’t wait to ATTACK it!
Check out the agenda in this post. Fit Bloggin’ looks like it’s going to be PACKED with good information for fitness-minded folk and bloggers alike.
At what pace can you still chat at? I can talk myself silly at a 10:00/mile, but I could barely breathe during the 5K today! The other ladies could easily chat, though! So I just listened.

Waaay awesome time!! That’s fast!
I’ve only ever ran alone, so I have no idea what my talking pace is..but I know when I’m at 7.30 pace, I don’t think I could talk! Have an amazing time
Wicked fast run! I have never run with people but I don’t think I could do a 24 minute 5K anyway, talking or not talking. Have fun!
I seriously doubt I could have talked during that race! I can easily chat at the 10:00 minute mile pace, too, but I don’t know where my cut off is. Glad you enjoyed yourself!
Have fun at the conference, it looks amazing. Congrats on the speedy 5K! I can rarely talk during races but chat all the time on training runs!
Sometimes when my cousin and I do them together, she makes me tell stories when she starts to get tired. I think the fastest we ran while doing that was a little over 26.5 minutes? It started getting rough at the end!
Caitlin, off topic here, but given your great work with Operation Beautiful I wanted to recommend some movies to you. They might be interesting for you when you do presentations (I used to use clips from them a lot when I gave presentations on violence against women, and the media pressure on women to look a certain way is very connected to a culture that condones violence against women). Mediaed.org is a production company that makes a lot of great films, so check out their site is a good place to start. Killing Us Softly is probably the most applicable to your work, and I’m pretty sure you can watch all or part of it on youtube. I’d also really recommend Generation M, which explores the misogyny in our culture through the media and violence against women.
Just thought you’d be interested, and I love spreading the word
Can’t wait to hear about the conference!
Looks like so much fun! Great job on the run. I don’t think I could part with my Brooks for even a short run either
Good luck with your presentation today!
I can chat at 8:30 I suppose.
My your breakfast buffet–get all the oats you can grab!
Your pictures of the Inner Harbor are making me homesick!
Wow, that’s a great run. good job guys!
I can usually chat around 7:30 pace or so.
Have fun today!
Whew!! That’s fast!! Good thing you didn’t wear your new shoes. I wouldn’t be able to mutter a single word at that speed!
That’s a fast time! I can chat at about the same pace, 10 min./mile
OH wow that is FAST!!! I’ve never ran with anyone before so I never attempted to talk but my fastest pace was between 8:30-9:00 min mile… so I have a feeling I would’ve been dying with those ladies!
What an awesome run!! Glad you’re having fun
Ha! I wish I could chat while I run! I’m concentrating too much on my breathing (asthma shoutout – Hey-ay!) and even as slow as I’m going – there is no talking.
HOLY FAST! I can talk at a 9 min pace. Way to go in 24 minutes! Have fun today!!
Go Baltimore!!!! hehe love the pics…I just ran that route yesterday
wish i could start running!! xxx
I think that is super-fast… Wow! Forget being able to talk during it, I would have been crawling by the end.
Hope you have a great day!
Wow that’s a fast run! I can’t talk below 10 minute miles either. I’m just trying to breathe.
I love the Inner Harbor Area! So pretty! Nice 5k time!
looks like a gorgeous race, what a fabo way to start the weekend!
That is a super quick run! I would have done the same and listened in on the conversations around me trying not to die!! LOL
An oatmeal buffet sounds so interesting! I could totally go overboard so easily there, though.
I can’t talk while running, I have a few times, but I have no clue how fast I was going.
I can barely talk at all!
Free shoes sound sweet:)
That is a great time for your 5k! Congrats!
Free shoes?! Good deal! Nice race!
Omg, the banana picture. Am I the only one?
@Sarah..no you aren’t I thought it was pretty funny!
Way to go! I’m not a chatter while I run but I think I could chat around a 10 minute pace or so. I’d rather just breathe and keep running. But I know building up to where you can easily have a conversation while running is ideal. Maybe one day.
Congrats on your time – that is so fast!!
Your photos of the inner harbor are making me smile. My grandparents lived in the Annapolis area until I turned 18, and DC and Baltimore are homey to me – I haven’t been since I was sixteen and miss the Maryland/DC area so much!
You know I have always been amazed how you mention how you catch up with your friends when you run with them, and how people manage to film race videos- me, I’m trying to keep all my oxygen for my poor, struggling muscles! Did your breathing get better as you progressed with your running? I wouldn’t feel even the slightest bit awkward (if you did!), about the other ladies pace being a little faster than yours- remember: the tortoise, not the hare won the race! Favourite mantra of mine
Enjoy the conference…
I’m not a bigger chatter while I run, but I think I can chat at about a 10:30 minute mile.
I couldn’t chat either. Running a marathon is hard enough. Good job on the time!
Awesome 5K! I can usually carry on a conversation as long as I am around 7:30/pace. Anything faster than that and I tend to not be as chatty! haha!
Nice! Way to go on the run! That looks like so much fun:)
woo hoo for 24 minute 5k! you guys rocked it
have a fabulous rest of your day! cant wait to hear more!
Wow–so fast!
Re: Running while chatting–On my training runs for my past half marathon, I kept hearing that I was supposed to run at a conversational pace. So, I was out running–alone, in the dark–and I say out loud to myself: “Is this conversational? Yep it is!” and then I looked over and saw a group of people watching me to talk to myself. Nice!
I know I can be conversational down to about 9:20 but beyond that, no way!
Haha! That’s a funny story. That is totally something I would do.
Awesome! Major congrats on the super speedy 5K! That is a rocking time!!
An oatmeal breakfast buffet? Totally jealous.
The 5k looks like it was a blast! Speedy, short runs can be so much fun and makes a nice change from longer races.
hahaha…talking and running? doesn’t really happen. although back in the day i could chat and run at about an 8 minute mile
You’re so lucky to have people to run with where you can chat and pace each other. Group running is so good for you! Plus, I never know how fast or slow to start out and end up with an array of splits!
How did you originally meet your running buddies? Do you think you’re friends with people only because they like to run? (I don’t mean this in an invasive or offensive way!)
The run this morning was awesome. I loved the harbor views!
I’m with ya on being able to chat at a 10 minute mile pace. When I’m doing 8 minute miles I might be able to talk but my words are about 5 seconds apart. haha.
how fun! what a rgeat event…..and race! i am probably like you 10 min ok but more than that and i can’t talk
Oh. Wow. My last 5k was 34:00. I see I’m a tad slower than many of you. But that’s ok, I’m a running novice. I’ll get there!
I usually don’t use the word “jealous” but I’m serious jealous of free New Balance shoes! I’m in desperate need of new kicks!
I can still chat at 9:30′s but any faster and I’m just along for the ride, hangin’ on!
Wow, great job girl, that’s mighty fast. I can chat at anything above a 9:00 pace, but below that and I have to concentrate too much! Hope you continue to enjoy yourself
COngrats!!! You’re awesome- just one race after another!
Who won?
That’s gorgeous weather to go run in! So glad the sun is finally out
Wow! That’s fast! Sounds like a great weekend thus far!
You guys were super speedy! I can talk at a 12 minute mile….ha! Anything under that and I make my running partner talk and I give short answers.
Aw, everything looks like SO much fun! What a fantastic weekend. Oozing jealousy but can’t deny that I’m happy to be in New Zealand anyway.
I can chat at about a 12 min mile…anything lower than 12 is tough to talk, but can run a 9 min mile on my best days. I’m not quite at the speed of some of you ladies, but intened on working to it in time.
looks like a ton of fun!
